Brucellosis
Case Report
a 45M goat herder in Malaysia develops 3 weeks of fevers, lethargy, night sweats and headache
history revealed he drank unpasteurised milk from said goats, which he also sold to consumers
blood cultures were negative and he tested negative for more common tropical diseases such as malaria, dengue, typhus and lepto
eventually he tested positive for brucella serology, unfortunately about 80 people also developed brucellosis from drinking milk from his farm, and a few lab staff also picked it up from handling their blood samples
consider this differential in PUO
Tumblr media
Microbiology
causative organism: Brucella melitensis
gram negative coccobacillus, facultative intracellular
hardy bacteria that can survive prolonged periods in meat/dairy products unless pasteurised/cooked as well as dust & surfaces
picked up in the intestinal submucosa on ingestion and transported by macropahges to lymphoid tissue
it then has the possibility of spreading haematogenously in the liver, spleen, joints etc. causing systemic or localized infection
Transmission
zoonoses (animal associated)
in particular: feral pigs, so hunters are often at increased risk (due to handling the carcasses), but also cattle, sheep, goat and dogs
outbreaks often associated with consumption of unpasteurized milk from infected animals
Tumblr media
Epidemiology
global and notifiable disease in most countries
endemic to Mediterraena, South America and the indian subcontinent
in Australia - largely QLD and NT, but now NSW
Increased risk groups (i.e. what to ask on history and what clues on history to consider for brucellosis)
regular contact with animals (herders, abbatoir workers, vets - there are case reports of lab workers who pick up brucellosis etc)
people who ingest unpasteurized dairy/milk, or the undercooked meat of infected animals
History
first described by another European white man, Dr. George Cleghorn, British Army Surgeon in minorca in 1751 on the island of Malta following the Crimean war
Tumblr media
it was named for another British white man, Sir David Bruce who led a commission into a fever outbreak among the army in Malta before they found the organism causing the disease (Sir Themistocles Zammit identified that goats transmit it in milk)
Sir bruce also discovered that trypanosoma brucei (also named for him) was the microbe responsible for animal trypanosomiasis/sleeping sickness. incidentally, he was born in Melbourne Australia
trivia with the Crimean war - was ironically a war fought between Russia and the UK + it's Western Allies and the empire that preceded Turkey (Ottoman)
Today the Crimean war is more well known for producing Florence Nightingale, founder of modern nursing and yay, finally a woman in random medical history that hardly is related to brucellosis.
Clinical features
PUO - cyclical fevers, fatigue, headache, insomnia, myalgias/arthralgias, weight loss, anorexia (fairly non specific, but also systemic)
incubation times can be long, which can be deceptive, reportedly up to 50 yrs from first exposure
otherwise, most cases it ranges from 3 days to several week, on average, expect 2-4
sometimes: hepatosplenomegaly
critical on history to clarify travel/living situation or contacts and consumption of unpasteurised dairy or undercooked meat
localized disease also possible, depending on organs involved
up to 40% will report peripheral arthritis, sacroillitis and spondylititis (kinda sounds like ank spa), at worst can cause osteomyelitis and septic arthritis
endocraditis is a rare but serious complication, with a 5% mortality rate, outside of this it's rarely fatal
if the lungs are affected, cough and SOB can occur but hte CXR will be lcear
GBS has been reported to occur following infection
hepatic abscess and granulmoa in a few
also possible: epididymoorchitis and skin manifestations like erythema nodosum
ocular changes like uveitis, cataracts etc.
it really feels rheum flavoured.
Investigations
Tumblr media
hints on basic bloods - neutropaenia and anaemia, thromobcytopaenia in the case of hepatosplenomegaly or ITP
raised ESR and CRP, ALP and LDH
elevated LFTs in hepatomegaly
but diagnosis: blood cultures --> can take weeks as slow growing (due to aerosol transmission, must be handled in a biohazard hood as with the case report)
key really: serology is the most commonly used tool
PCR can also be used, including 16S
tissue also an option depending on organ affected
Management:
atypical cover: azith and doxy
several weeks of treatment usually - i.e. if uncomplicated, doxy for 6 weeks (however relapses are common on monotherapy, up to 40%), often rifampicin 600 mg daily for 6/52 is also added or gentamicin
where doxy can't be used, bactrim is the alternative
Tumblr media

Synopsis:
The Creation Association, starting off as just a simple research lab in the 70s by two dreamers, Sylvester Clemensen & Marc-Antoine Mélançon, began to expand out to Campuses. Dawn of the new century, Sylvester froze his head to be revived by future generations, his name going down in history as the Association expands outward for other countries. The Association has cured diseases, ailments, and disability, and now that the human body has been perfected in their eyes, they wish to expand their research…and see what they can do to modify it. Mari Uno is a college student lost in life and not knowing where to go. Caught in a crossroads, she has a chance encounter with a curious girl who teaches her about SCCA West Campus, a place where she can go to find community, learn, and grow into a better person, thought Mari only knows what lies on the surface.

Ishaq description: Born and raised to a wealthy family in Karachi Pakistan, the Didar family became one of the first investors in the Creation Association when the organization opened for public funding in the late 90s. At that point and time, this was but a rising organization, with their theories not yet being proven. The Didar family took a chance that these dreamers could heal their young blind son. The Creation Association, for whom Ishaq can credit to his regaining of sight, had free campuses situated in Europe, with free tuition. Ishaq would make his way to the SCCA school of Medicine, London, studying with the intention of applying to work there afterward. Ishaq would use his body for his own experiments, as his body was already used to being used as an object for scientific use. He gave himself new eyes, switching out monthly, recreating everything that lead to him gaining sight until the knowledge of the process became second nature. One of the eccentric ones, he covered his body with these eyes, finding out how to create new neural pathways from scratch. Ishaq's mastering of his craft gained him praise worldwide, and they created an entirely new division for him, the Ocular division of the Creation Association.

Being the golden child of the family, she excelled in school, but never having interest in the people around her. Turn of the century, Heike has hit 40 and doesn't know what to do with her life. While her job is very well paying, on top of being married into a wealthy family, Heike couldn't help but feel unfulfilled by life. Her new calling came when she heard about the opportunities opening in America with the Creation Association. Heike immediately excelled, with her own personal research helping her in this new field. She became head of the Body Modification division, a more secretive section of the Creation Association. While most of SCCA focused on fixing what they viewed wrong with the human body, Heike got to finally have free reign to add on to the human body…sort of. The SCCA did have some restrictions, which Heike found bothersome.

Toyhouse | Character Hub | Unvale Serxio description: Born in Vigo, with his family moving him to Madrid to study, Serxio was always the brightest in his classroom. Though quite unpopular, with students making fun of his pale and bony appearance, he vowed that everyone would regret how they treated him, that he would excel past any and all students, then he would finally gain the recognition he deserves. This recognition never came. Serxio saw the opportunity to climb up some social ladder. When SCCA opened it's first campus in Europe, that being Milan, he decided that this is where he would gain his recognition, as the SCCA was quickly beginning to become popular. Serxio would gain his doctorate and then quickly rise up the ranks to lead the Campus in Marseilles. Serxio has gained minor praise for turning SCCA Campus Marseilles into "The best of SCCA Campuses in Europe," though this glowing praise is mostly coming from Serxio himself. A scandal would break out in Serxio's misuse of Association funds.

Ordering specific test in Uveitis – Avoiding a scattershot approach
--------
Ordering specific investigations in uveitis involves a systematic approach to identify the underlying cause and guide appropriate treatment, with the initial evaluation typically including a comprehensive eye examination, detailed medical history, and assessment of symptoms, carefully analysing risk factors and clues to diagnosis.
This short discouraging the blunderbuss approach to ordering tests and taking into account both sensitivity (how well the presence of a disease is predicted by a test) and specificity (how well the absence of a disease is predicted by a test), targeting a golden ratio of minimal amount of tests for maximum amount of data (The analogous blunderbuss was a a 17th- century large-bored gun firing balls or slugs which scattered projectiles in a broad range but lacked subtlety and precision).
Specific investigations may be ordered based on the clinical presentation and suspected aetiology of uveitis. Common tests include blood work to assess for infectious or autoimmune diseases, such as full blood count (FBC/CBC), inflammatory markers such as erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), organ profile (LFT, U+E), Chest X-ray to look for TB or Sarcoidosis, Syphillis.
Other tests depend on the outcome of targeted history and examination, and include Serum ACE, Toxoplasma and Toxocara antibodies, HLA-A29, ANCA, ANA, Mantoux Test, Interferon Gamma Release Assay, Fundus Fluorescein Angiography, Indocyanine Green Angiography, Electrophysiology, CT Chest, CT Abdo/Pelvis, MRI Brain, Lumbar Puncture for CSF Studies, Conjunctival biopsies, Anterior chamber tap,  Biopsy of vitreous/choroid - In infectious uveitis cases, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing of ocular fluids or serological tests for specific pathogens may be necessary
Sometimes doing routine immunological tests doesn’t really help as there are often weak positive anti-nuclear and other antibodies found in Uveitis which are not really interpretable, so
Tailor Those Investigations!
Featuring Pirates of the Caribbean’s Marty, Guardians of the Galaxy’s Mantis, Shawshank Redemption’s Warden Samuel Norton, the lab scene from Jurassic Park’s Isla Nublar, and the classic Knightmare CITV series (1987-1994) "Ooh, nasty!"

It's inevitable that somewhere along the way they will obtain scrapes or break down. Axelrad M, Tosh M. Stacking up the leading 50 optical retailers. Walmart is today the third leading provider of optical products in the United States. Your optical method can inform you how much your NHS optical coupon is worth. Glues used for repairing the frames of glasses are not the like the ones utilized by youngsters for their arts as well as crafts tasks.
If you shed your specific fabric you can also make use of an additional microfiber towel. If you're using Felix Gray glasses or other glasses with anti-glare finishing the top priority is to prevent your glasses from ever before obtaining scratched. If you have any kind of more queries you can figure out just how to call us below. If your purchase was online you can find our full returns policy is outlined in the Legal Policy area.
Tumblr media
The greatest grievance I have regarding this item is the UV light, which, I assume, is not solid enough. You can adjust the nose pads to ensure that they keep the glasses frame in the best place.
What Triggers Eye Discomfort?
youtube
In fact, you can locate a lot of the products that you need in your house. Eyeglassescan break or bend when you bring them without a case, lay them on the table or accidentally drop them.
Looking For A Reduced Vision Help To Combat Vision Loss? Take The Irisvision Trial.
Yet be very cautious, due to the fact that even a tiny change of the nose pads will certainly change the fit dramatically. If you have actually acquired glasses online, before you begin your glasses fit modification, make sure you recognize exactly what it is you intend to accomplish. Both most common goals are to tighten frames while keeping the optical facility of the lens directly before your students, as well as to make using the glasses feel a lot more comfortable on your face. There are https://top-specs.co.uk/frame-and-lens-range/ of frame products, memory plastic frames as well as cable frames. It calls for treatment as well as persistence, and we warn that you must be very mindful.
Obtain a superglue that, other than being excellent at bonding plastics, can additionally stick together porcelains, wood, paper items, and also also steel. The glues also deal with non-porous materials like plastics, metal, and others.
Now, you require to readjust your eyeglasses frame so that it will always be properly positioned. If you need to wear glasses to compensate for your poor vision after that you recognize exactly how tough it is when your frames obtain accidentally damaged.
Unlike regular college glue, superglues dry and collection completely in secs. You seriously require to locate the most effective glue for glasses frames so you can do the repairs yourself. Even simply getting your spectacles frames skillfully repaired will set you back fairly a great deal of money.
Nonetheless, as soon as used and also cured, this stuff will certainly not be damaged and will certainly not give. It is due to the fact that because situation, you just require to wash the surface area with some soap as well as water and you are fine. It is not such as a superglue, which bonds to the skin and takes permanently to eliminate.
Widening the nose pads goes down the glasses lower down on your nose. Bringing the nose pads more detailed with each other elevates the glasses up on your nose.
Do not go back and also forth with your old glasses, also if your old set is extra comfortable. The switching will only make it harder for you to adapt to your new specs, and that will make the procedure take longer.
In a blind (or low-visibility) test, they operate nearly the same as brand-new. The hinge offers really little play and also they fold up perfectly for storage. The new joint is a tiny, attractive brass joint sold for usage on precious jewelry boxes or various other little wooden crafts. The bundle included two joints and also small brad nails, which will be conserved for later tasks. The brand is National with a component # V1810, Size 5/8" x 2-3/4".
Second, I utilized a basic BIC design lighter to heat the tip of the pliers' jaws. Nose pads are held together by tiny screws, usually like the ones from thetemple hinges. Think it or otherwise, toothpaste is effective in removing scrapes. You can fixsmall scratcheswithout needing to go to the facility.
Common Eye Disorders.
Silicone nose pads are more durable and also comfortable, and also protect against the glasses from slipping out of area. The majority of people that wear them don't typically require to recognize the components of glasses by name. But if you're ordering a new set or have issues with your existing glasses, recognizing the temples from the nose pads will certainly be valuable. As well as it's not a poor idea to know the feature of each different component of your glasses in instance they break and you require replacement parts. Glasses and also Sunglass Nosepads commonly deteriorate with time and also require to be replaced with a fresh set in order to maintain the comfort and also appropriate adjustment of an eyeglass frame.
If your acquisition was made in shop just return it to the store you bought from who will have the ability to assistance. If you experience lightheadedness or nausea or vomiting when wearing your brand-new glasses, it's likely that you're likewise dealing with deepness assumption concerns.
Tumblr media
Review the section above to find out exactly how to tighten plastic frames or metal frames. You can additionally make a very mild change of the pad arm, the tiny metal little bits that hold the nose pad.
You will certainly have a difficult time sticking things with bigger surface areas with each other using superglue due to the fact that there is very little air between part to promote the treating procedure. Your glasses will certainly not be the only thing in your house that will certainly need fixings, specifically if there are young kids around.
I located that as soon as dried, this adhesive comes to be completely waterproof and also heat-resistant. This brings about so many various applications not simply repairing broken glasses frames.
Most of the times you will not need to fit spectacles, but if you do, you can take them to a local optical store for a suitable. Look into these quick suggestions to readjust your spectacles frames. If you have wire frames, your glasses will have nose pads. These can be readjusted with an easy pinch or tug of the fingertips.
Can the optic nerve heal itself?
Damage to the optic nerve is irreversible because the cable of nerve fibers doesn't have the capacity to regenerate, or heal itself, when damage occurs. This is why glaucoma is an incurable disease at this point, and why early detection is so important.
This has actually lowered the amount of in-office customization which suggests that less as well as fewer opticians are performing these tasks.
As laid out in various other blog posts on this site, a giving optician might be called for to finish official education as well as training depending upon the state in which they function.
This is generally done to enhance office efficiency and also rise economic efficiency.
Those who appreciate dealing with individuals are motivated to find out more about the laws in their state and also start trying to find prospective job chances.
States that have no opticianry demands normally permit employers to train their opticians nonetheless they choose.
Several optical stores are now outsourcing lens modification orders to specialized labs.
Press pads internal if your glasses slide and also exterior if your glasses rest uncomfortably high or explore your nose. If you have plastic frames, you can bend the temple arms in or bent on aid change the means your glasses sit on your nose.
In most cases, the more you use your glasses, the quicker you'll get used to them. I wish I would certainly understood about this a year ago when my toddler tore my glasses apart. I liked your home heating the pliers suggestions as well as not heating up the plastic directly. All I considered while reviewing this is how much it should have drawn to do without glasses on. As a fellow four-eye I've bodged a number of fixes in time.
Who can diagnose eye problems?
Health professionals who are qualified to diagnose and treat eye diseases are optometrists and ophthalmologist. Ophthalmologists complete 4 years of medical school and perform 4 years of residency training.
Tumblr media
What Is Glue For Glasses Frames.
Additionally, when it concerns the strength of their bonds, superglues are organizations in advance of regular ones. The very best glues for eyeglass repair show off the fact that they can hold numerous extra pounds of dead weight. Although using this item to fix damaged eyeglass frames can be a bit tricky since you require to mix it extensively before you can use it.
Most of polyvinyl chloride PVC nose pads are made of a soft firm plastic material that gives comfortable assistance of spectacles frames over the facial nasal area. As with all nose pads fabricated from any kind of material, nose pads need to be appropriately changed to make sure that the nosepads fit flush against the skin, otherwise the weight of the glasses frame might leave pressure impressions on the skin.
To do that, first stand in front of a mirror as well as look straight ahead, neither up neither down. Put on your glasses and also place the center of the lenses directly before your eyes. This reveals you the put on your nose that you want the glasses frames on your face.
Nose Pads Keep Glasses Comfortable.
Eyeglass frames have temple arms, holy place corners, nose-bridge as well as nose-pads and also they are all designed for modification. Glasses are created to be gotten used to fit if required, to fit most any kind of face framework. When you ask a neighborhood optical specialist to adjust glasses for you, it is called a fitting.
Can an optometrist diagnose glaucoma?
All optometrists, no matter their level of licensure, are expected to diagnose the condition or at least to recognize that a problem exists and refer the patient to another practitioner. It is in the area of the diagnosis that most referrals by optometrists to ophthalmologists related to glaucoma occur.
Tumblr media
try it out was split at one end to allow for the insertion of a lens, as well as the split was closed by a piece of copper cable. The frames were very light, yet the stress in the rivet would certainly have loosened in time making them not able to remain on the nose. Paintings illustrating such frames day from as very early as 1392 CE. Superglues are usually utilized to affix tiny pieces, like damaged eyeglass frames, scale design parts, and take care of broken ceramics, damaged dentures, and so on.
You simply require to be more cautious with your glasses later. If your glasses frame does not have nose pads, you only need to change the holy place tips in order to accomplish your goal. The nose item on plastic frames is made to fit many nose bridges. find a job might be the tiniest noticeable components of eyeglasses, yet they guarantee a comfortable fit while holding the glasses in place.
Replacement nose pads used in fundamental spectacles repair are available at moderate cost as well as maintain your glasses sanitary and comfortable no matter. The earliest kind of eyewear for which any type of historical record exists originates from the middle of the 15th century.
By obtaining a good superglue to make use of on your broken frames, you are conserving a lot of cash, which you can utilize on more vital points. This item provided by the brand is the best glue to deal with glasses. It has a gel-like uniformity so when you position a grain on one part of the eyeglass frame, it will not run. Either way, it is essential to make certain that the optical center of the glasses lenses remains straight before your eyes.
If you make huge changes, or frequent changes, the arms will damage or the weld to the glasses frame will damage. Glasses frequently glide down the nose bridge for different factors. The very best method to stop glasses from gliding down your nose is to flex the rear of the holy places tighter around your ears.
youtube
Visual Skill Examination.
You require to repair your eyeglass frames as soon as you can and also the very best means to do so is by utilizing extremely adhesive. These are the scenarios that necessitate using superglue. It is since these products can make fast and also simple work of damaged eyeglass frames. You just require to use the superglue on the components that need to be reattached and after that press them back with each other.
Frequently, a nose pad or nose pads likewise get removed from an eyewear frame and also need changing. Nonetheless, with the help of the purchasing guide and recommendations stated over, your opportunities of obtaining the best very adhesive for plastic spectacles frames will considerably boost.
The issue I have with UV cured glue to fix glasses frames similar to this one is that you need to make sure that it is totally revealed to the light. Although the bond toughness of this adhesive for steel glasses frames is not that solid, it is enough for most glass fixing requirements.
What does OD mean after a doctors name?
An optometrist receives a doctor of optometry (OD) degree after completing four years of optometry school, preceded by three years or more years of college.
I Have A Handicap Can Lenscrafters Accommodate Me?
Nose pads are connected to nose pad arms, which are welded to the spectacles frame. You need to make just tiny fit adjustments to the nose pad arms.
Can You Place Lenses In The Frames I Bought At An Additional Shop?
It is a primitive pince-nez whose frames were made from items of either metacarpal bone from the forelimb of a bull or from big pieces of antler. The two items were each paddle-shaped and also were joined by an iron rivet which offered the stress over the nose and also permitted the lenses to be folded up together. The objective of the 3 openings at the location where the deal with connects to the joint doubts, though they may have been made use of for pinhole vision, a principle which was recognized from old times.

ok, we get it, cats can’t be vegan; but why not?
By now, you’ve probably heard people on this website saying that cats are obligate carnivores. That’s true! You have probably also have heard people say this loudly and self-righteously, without offering additional detail. What does it really mean, in nutritional practice, for an animal to be an obligate carnivore? What, specifically, does meat have that cats need? Is there really a bunch of people out there trying to put their cats on vegan diets? Is it actually that bad? This post was written for you, my intellectually curious friend.
Cats have a higher dietary requirement for protein:
Cats (and I presume carnivores in general) convert protein into glucose and use it for energy at a relatively high rate. That’s a last ditch strategy for humans; if we’re starving, we’ll start using protein for energy, but most of the time we use carbohydrates, because it’s a more efficient process. Cats don’t have that option, because their natural diet (small rodents, birds, reptiles, and even bugs, with occasional nibbling on foliage) is very low-carb, so their metabolisms work differently. The minimum protein requirement in the cat is about 26%, compared to a minimum of 18% for dogs, which are better adapted to digest carbohydrates, and a minimum of 10% for humans, which are true omnivores. If they do not hit this minimum, cats will start catabolizing their own muscles to meet their energy requirements. Their maximum protein intake while hunting can be as high as 62%!
Can this higher protein requirement be met with plant-based protein? Yes, but it’s difficult. Hydrolyzed protein diets are therapeutic pet foods for animals with food allergies. The protein macromolecules are broken down into peptides or even amino acids, which are actually too small for the immune system to recognize them as a threat. The protein for HP diets can be sourced from anything, and soybeans are often used. These diets are not truly vegetarian, as they usually include animal fats for better palatability, and may also use hydrolyzed protein sourced from animal products in order to hit their minimums. Vegan cat food manufacturers don’t have this option, so they have to add ingredients like yeast and/or molasses to get cats interested, and their protein percentages are often on the low side, which is not ideal.
Cats can’t synthesize arachidonic acid from linoleic acid:
Arachidonic acid is a fatty acid found primarily in animal tissue. Most herbivores and omnivores can make it in their bodies using linoleic acid, which they get from plants. (Vegetable oils are a good source of linoleic acid for humans!) Cats don’t have the enzyme required to do this, so for them arachidonic acid is an essential nutrient, which means they have to get it from their diet. For a vegetarian cat food, chicken eggs would be a great source, but sourcing vegan arachidonic acid is more complicated.
Can you get arachidonic acid from non-animal sources? Maybe! Fungus in the genus Mortierella have been found to produce arachidonic acid. Theoretically you could farm this fungus and use it in cat food, although I have no idea if anyone is doing this right now. I don’t think its a cost-effective process yet, but someone somewhere is probably working on it. There are also some potential algae/seaweed sources, and those are definitely ingredients found in some pet foods, although I’m not sure if we have well-established science on how bioavailable plant sources of arachidonic acid are to carnivores- sometimes if you’re using a weird ingredient as a nutrient source you have to add more of it than usual, because it might be less efficiently digested/utilized.
Cats can’t synthesize vitamin A from carotenes:
Vitamin A is another essential nutrient for cats. When people say that eating carrots is good for your eyes, they’re referring to the fact that the orange color of carrots comes from carotene, and our bodies break carotene down into retinol, a form of vitamin A, which is vital for ocular health and function. Just like with linoleic acid and arachidonic acid, cats cannot convert carotenes to retinol; they rely on their prey to do it for them. Butter, cheese and eggs are all potential sources of vitamin A, so we still might be able to make a vegetarian cat food if we use dairy.
Can you get Vitamin A from non-animal sources? Maybe! Please note that many plants listed as a “source of vitamin A” are really a source of carotenes, and not suitable for cats. But synthetic retinoids exist! (They’re used topically for acne, I guess, IDK anything about human medicine.) So I bet someone out there is making a synthetic vitamin A supplement, and I bet a cat food manufacturer could buy it. I also bet it would be significantly more expensive than just putting chicken liver in cat food.
Cats can’t synthesize niacin from tryptophan:
Are you getting the picture here? Carnivores just aren’t equipped to make certain nutrients. Why bother, when you can get it so easily from your prey? Herbivores can make tryptophan and niacin from seeds, nuts, and legumes, and if they don’t have enough niacin, they can just synthesize it directly from the tryptophan. Carnivores can’t, and using eggs won’t save us this time, sadly.
Can you get niacin from non-animal sources? Probably! Peas, rice, and potatoes all have some amount of niacin, and all those ingredients are present in cat foods on the market today. So perhaps there’s still hope? The question here is whether cats can use plant sources of niacin efficiently enough to meet their daily requirements, which is not something I can tell you. But I’m sure there’s synthetic sources of these supplements as well.
Cats have a higher dietary requirement for taurine:
Taurine is an amino sulfonic acid, which is basically just a fancy amino acid. It’s found in most animal tissues and is very important for all sorts of body functions. They put it in energy drinks for some reason, although again, humans can synthesize it just fine. Taurine deficiencies in animals can lead to blindness and heart disease (and deficiencies in vitamin A and niacin are no picnic either). Cats need more of it than dogs do, which is why you can’t just feed cats dog food.
Can you get taurine from non-animal sources? Yes! Most of the taurine we get these days is in fact synthesized in a lab. Apparently its more cost-effective to do that than to source it from animal products.
Theoretically, if you managed to make a vegan cat food with appropriate levels of protein, arachidonic acid, vitamin A, niacin, and taurine, would that work? ...I can’t really say.
Nutrition is complicated. What works on paper doesn’t necessarily work in the body, and the only way you learn that is through trial and error. Personally, even as a vegetarian myself, I wouldn’t risk it. Nutritionally perfect, universally palatable vegan cat food would be an impressive feat of culinary engineering, but there’s so much risk involved. I’d want to see a lot more research than we currently have, with a lot more real-world feeding trials of vegan food.
Yes, there are vegan pet foods available today! Not a lot, because the pet food market has been unreasonably obsessed with high-protein MEAT MEAT MEAT diets for years now, but there’s a few. Looking at Wysong’s vegan formula, I see that its been formulated to meet the established nutritional minimums for both cats and dogs. Protein, 26%. Supplemented with vitamin A, niacin, and taurine, although they’re not legally required to tell me how much they use or where it comes from. I believe they are relying on kelp for the arachidonic acid. Theoretically, it might work. I want it to work. Would I trust it? Absolutely not.
Look: if you feel strongly enough about veganism that you want your cat on a vegan diet, here’s what you do. Make an appointment with a board-certified veterinary nutritionist. Bring them a bag of the food you’re planning to use. They’re probably going to contact the company to get the typical nutrient analysis (which is more specific than the guaranteed analysis on the bag), cross reference that information with everything they know about cat nutrition (which is a LOT more than I know) and maybe even have a sample of the food sent to an independent feed analysis lab. If you do all of that that, and start a vegan diet trial under veterinary supervision, with the full intention of pulling the cat off of the trial if they show clinical signs of any nutritional deficiency...go for it.
edit: @weredrakka pointed out that sometimes synthetic versions of a molecule turn out not to work the exact same way that the natural version does, which I neglected to explicitly state because 1. I was sort of taking it for granted, and 2. chemistry is waaay above my paygrade. anyway, that’s part of why I’m hesitant!

Weird science: NASA's twins study reveals the strange effects of spaceflight on the body
Astronaut Scott Kelly made history in 2016 when he became the first American to spend 12 consecutive months in space after an epic 340-day stint on the International Space Station.
During his time in orbit, Kelly also took part in a groundbreaking study that involved his twin brother and fellow astronaut Mark, back on Earth. The brothers provided blood, saliva and urine samples, underwent ultrasounds and bone scans, got flu shots and more, all in the name of science.
NASA has now published the results of the study, which involved 10 research teams, in the journal Science.
Probably the strangest finding concerned telomeres, which are the protective ends of chromosomes. Those tips gradually shorten as we get older, and are thought to be linked to age-related diseases including some cancers.
n space, however, Scott Kelly's telomeres got longer. "We were surprised," said Colorado State University telomere expert Susan Bailey. She can't explain it although it doesn't mean Kelly got younger. Back on Earth, his telomeres mostly returned to preflight average although he did have more short telomeres than before.
In a statement, NASA explained that, because telomeres are important for cellular genomic stability, more studies on them are planned for future one-year missions.
In another finding, scientists noted that, while Kelly's DNA wasn't mutated in space the activity of many of his genes — how they switch on and off — did change, especially in the last half of the voyage, which ended in March 2016.
“While in space, researchers observed changes in the expression of Scott’s genes, with the majority returning to normal after six months on Earth,” explained NASA in its statement. “However, a small percentage of genes related to the immune system and DNA repair did not return to baseline after his return to Earth.”
Scientists also identified key genes that can be targeted for monitoring the health of future astronauts.
Crucially, researchers discovered that a flu vaccine administered to Scott in space worked the same as one administered to Mark on Earth, a finding that could be crucial for long space journeys. “A fully functioning immune system during long-duration space missions is critical to protecting astronaut health from opportunistic microbes in the spacecraft environment,” explained NASA.
NASA’s goal is to send a manned mission to Mars by 2035, prompting extensive research ahead of an epic roundtrip journey that could take two and a half years.
Radiation also poses a major challenge for Mars missions, along with the durability of astronauts’ bodies and minds.
Scott Kelly did experience some chromosomal instability during his year on the orbiting space lab that might reflect radiation exposure in space, according to the NASA study. He also performed better on cognitive tests in space but slowed down after his return, possibly as more things competed for his attention.
Similar to nearly 40 percent of all astronauts, the former U.S. Navy pilot experienced changes in the structure of his eye and thickening of his retina in space, which may be symptoms of "spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome." The changes may the result of fluids shifting in the absence of gravity, scientists say.
Also, like other astronauts, Kelly experienced a temporary height gain in space.
Scott Kelly described his historic year in space during an interview with Fox News last year. “I was surprised at how long a year is – it’s a really, really long time,” he said.
“It’s a crazy ride, coming back into Earth in a capsule,” Scott explained. “It’s like the wildest ride you will ever have in your life – it’s kind of like going over Niagara Falls in a barrel, but while you’re on fire. As soon as you realize you’re not going to die … [it’s] the most fun you’ll ever have in your life.”

Does It Matter (If We’ve Gone Too Far?)
You were trying to recover your notes when they saw you. A jade wandering in from outside had shouted, pointed at you and called for backup.
The escape route was too far away. So you’d spun cataracts in their eyes and locked yourself in the zombie cage, grateful for its tinted glass.
Pressed against its wall as the blue creature you once contained here was, you ponder your options. These trolls were discussing a hit on the new head matron. A hit on the cerulean scientist who threatened their traditions. Bribery of officials to catch any jades trying to escape their duty and to punish them.
Imperial treason wouldn’t matter so much if you weren’t under its nose. You would gladly walk away, the affairs of jades meaningless as ever. The Empire doesn’t need you to do its culling.
“Where’d they go?”
“FUCK, I can’t see!”
“Language!”
“That labcoat fucker did something to my eyes! I can’t see ANYTHING!”
“Shut up! We’ll never find them if you keep wailing.”
“Let me rip out YOUR oculars and see how you deal with it - “
You have time to think, at least. None of them were expecting you to be here. At least they haven’t tampered with your lab too much, though one did make the mistake of getting too close to the indigobirds. Even with the sound dampeners in their cage, this variety also has flashing eyes capable of stunning a troll who looks at them too long. You have protective goggles for that very reason.
You walked by the unconscious jade after distracting the other pair of guards with a rash. They might be the lucky one soon.
They’re not far from you, but from the sound of pounding footsteps they’ve expected you to try to flee and will waste time searching while you plan.
You’ve had worse odds, you’re sure, but escape from here without culling anyone seems grimly unlikely.
What are the consequences for culling a cavern jade? You don’t know, but you doubt any leniency is granted to lowbloods for it. You won’t pretend you feel sorry about the idea; they are plotting treason. But treason not aimed at you is not your business, and it’s always foolish to get involved.
Yon wonder what are the consequences when jades are already in short supply. You can make anything look like an accident - fool any psi detector, machine or troll - but what gap will they leave behind?
What grubs’ futures would you be affecting, without matrons to care for them? What of their young acolytes left behind, their mother grub?
It’s no time for sentiment. Yet this is different from your other culls.
You breathe deeply, listening to the arguing, staring at the dark stone ceiling you know so well. It isn’t a time for anger either, or to curse their foolishness.
You long ago mastered the trick of suppressing your psi light, and you do it now, redirecting the sparks along the base of your horns, under your hair. The power in your blood wells up in you, building with every second until you reach out with it and find - feel - a place for it to go, a lattice of muscle, blood and nerves, full of foreign bacteria and viruses, an environment in of itself.
When you kill a troll, you don’t only kill the person. You wipe out every form of life except the rot that will feed on them. The flora and fauna that calls their body home.
Bodies are worlds, and you were hatched to cull them effortlessly.
A tiny node of psi burrows into the nearest jade, the one arguing with the one you blinded. It slips into their non-hued blood cells, and in less than half a minute, has transformed them into a plague that ravaged Alternia long ago and still dwells in its wet parts, in the slums and the forgotten sewers no troll cares about.
Tuberculosis.
With a stronger push, a wave of your hand as if conducting a symphony, the disease accelerates. It bursts cells, calls the immune system in, and you hear the telltale sound of a troll coughing up blood.
You close your eyes, your hands moving as if playing an instrument only you can see, directing the sprays of cells and microscopic units in the air, in the blood. Some of them will flee, but they won’t get far. Even the ones outside your range will soon be infected with a disease that will kill them in hours.
All you need to do is wait.
--
Two hours later, when the coughs have died off, you unlock the cage and slip out. Most of them won’t be dead yet, so you have your surgical mask on. you have your zombie and sandstorm gear on as well, to hide your horns. It’s not likely any of them will live to tell tales of you, but you haven’t stayed alive this long by underestimating ghostspeakers, and psychics who can see through the dead’s eyes.
The psihunters will barely find any trace of psi, and they won’t find the original body you put it into. You’re decomposing it where it lies, breaking it down back to its most basic parts. Then you’ll wash it away with your cleaning acid.
You’re already working on taking everything essential with you, and destroying the rest. The caverns can’t know who you were, who you worked for. They may piece it together via records, given time, but you’ll be asking the QPIN bookkeepers to wipe out any trace of this place from the ledgers.
You stroke an indigobird’s head, feeding it seeds to quiet the animal and put it in its transport cage before you take it with you. The still-unconscious jade by the cages is the only one unaffected by the disease, safe at your will.
They lie, dead or dying, across the cavern floor. There was no noise of their ship leaving, so you must have stricken them all in time.
Walking over to the side of the now empty bird cages, you see this troll is aged, old enough to show more gray than black in her long hair, likely why she’s still unconscious.
Gently, you leave a small sample container beside her, cracked open as if it fell by accident. Hopefully that’s what they’ll think; this elderly troll’s grasp slipped as she handled something she wasn’t meant to. Hopefully, they don’t punish her too badly.
You check outside the cave as the dying wheeze and hack, but more and more quiet as you pick your way among them. Some pluck at your pants, but this is your zombie gear; it was designed to resist the claws and fangs of the undead, and the feeble touches of the dying do nothing but ripple its reinforced fabric.
Hopefully you don’t make any rainbowdrinkers. Still, you’ll be long gone by the time they revive, if there are any.
As you nearly reach the entrance of the cavern with your equipment and animals, a foot grabs at your ankle.
It’s the troll you gave cataracts, their eyes so pale with them as to almost resemble a ghost’s. Jade blood has dribbled down their mouth, and their limbs shake, but their face creases with hatred.
“You...”
You shake your foot free and crush their windpipe precisely with your heel.
As you climb out, breathing the fresh air deeply through your mask even if it’s not safe yet to take off your gear.
There’s no one you can tell. Everyone’s made culls, but no one you’ve ever heard off has killed so many cavern jades at once. You doubt Hap Ret would care; you have no idea what ID would think. Your mouth twists in a grim smile at the irony of the situation.
You don’t need his approval, but a shallow part of you craves to see his reaction to this.
With a shake of your horns you reorient yourself. This wasn’t a matter of pride, of posturing. It was survival, nothing more.
If you liked using your psi - reveled in the power even as you acknowledged the echoes this action would no doubt have - then who will ever know?
The sun is rising, its warmth slowly spreading across the land. You take the controls and raise your ship up as its power thrums, the metal shining in the sun.
The cavern fades behind you.
You don’t look back.

This is the Cyclotron at UC Davis. We were there in 2017 and I took this photo. The operator (who can remain nameless) had Jimi Hendrix blasting away. It was like a scene out of a 1960 Sci-fi flick. Insanely cool. - Current applications include: - Studying the effects of radiation on electronics used in space missions. Private industry, NASA and the Naval Research Laboratory are among those who use CNL’s facilities to test the effects of radiation exposure on electronic equipment destined for deployment in spacecraft. The cyclotron’s tunability at lower energy levels is ideal for simulating a range of radiation environments encountered in space. - Treatment of ocular melanoma. Since 1994, more than 1,600 patients have been treated at CNL for ocular melanoma, a rare cancer of the eye. The low energy, high quality and stable proton beam produced by our cyclotron is ideally suited for the treatment of this disease. The ocular melanoma program at CNL is administered through UCSF’s Radiation Oncology department. - Nuclear physics. The cyclotron was designed as a highly sensitive and tunable nuclear physics research tool. - Current uses include: Testing critical components of particle detectors in CERN’s Large Hadron Collidor (UC Davis High Energy Physics group); Nuclear nonproliferation research and detection development (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory); - The cyclotron’s newly-developed spallation neutron beam line is being used to develop detectors to look for dark matter (UC Davis researchers and students); Training in experimental methods for nuclear physics (UC Davis students); Development of high specific activity 119-Te/119-Sb as a chelated radioisotope for use in targeted radiotherapy (Los Alamos National Laboratory). - UC Davis promotes Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and the Crocker Nuclear Lab cultivates a work environment where all individuals can feel welcome, respected, supported and valued. - NASA was there the week before we were. - So if you ever want to shoot a spitball at a target that is 30 million miles away, and you need somebody who can help you calculate that trajectory and velocity, we know a guy. - #protonbeamaccelerator https://instagr.am/p/CgQxT2_rADO/

Tidbits about Yo.
Dr. Yo has a scar in his chest, where he was shot with an arrow while he was on the field commanding. He would’ve bled out if Texas and Gavial did not save him. Somehow, despite almost losing his life, he became less fearful of being on the field. “I’ve fought in wars before. I would be disrespecting those fighting on the front lines if I just sat back and watched from the side.”
Prior to finding himself on Terra, Yo served in a special ops police force and then served as an officer in a military division. He’s extremely comfortable with using firearms and bladed weapons as a result.
He was engaged when he was younger, but it ended very, very poorly. However, he’s okay with talking about it.
Dr. Yo has terrible eyesight. Some operators from the medical department recommended that he receive ocular treatment or implants, but he refused. He jokes that “glasses make me look cuter anyways”, but he’s more afraid of losing eyesight and never being able to look at Texas again.
Much to Dr. Kal’tsit’s chagrin, Yo refuses to uphold the proper dress code expected of the Doctor. He will wear the coat, but underneath it, he wears everyday streetwear. Yo finds formality stifling and finds it not very conducive to a personable relationship with others. “I don’t want people to talk to me just because I’m the Doctor. I want people to talk to me because of me.”
Besides being a tactician, Yo practices medicine, but because Oripathy is not a disease he’s ever encountered on Earth, he spends a lot of time learning from Kal’tsit, Shining, Nightingale, and members of Rhine Lab regarding its etiology, pathophysiology, and treatment. He likes to lighten the grim mood of the medical ward with dumb jokes. “Trust me, this treatment is gonna ROCK. Get it, rock?”
