100% Jim & Archie were trying to get Olu to bring Zheng into the polycule except Olu had no idea he was even in a polycule to begin with

so much of the post s2 reaction from some izzy fans has been incredibly mask-off but i think by far one of the most blatant moments has been seeing all the ppl who think the season should’ve ended with izzy being made captain. aside from how in s1 his main textual arc was that he craves leadership and yet is incredibly ill-suited for it (source: those goddamn alex sherman DMs from last year) and how in s2 his arc has nothing to do with desiring leadership or being a capable leader. aside from that. there are multiple other people who DO have arcs or at least characterizations that would be better suited to being captain, such as:

frenchie, who is actually canonically made captain at the end of the show

oluwande, who was voted captain by the crew in episode 9 of last season

zheng, who has experience captaining an entire fleet of pirate ships

and i’m gonna come out of left field with this one but how about spanish jackie, who knows how to run a business and how to lead a group of 20 people with no problem. her management style might have to change a bit if she’s in charge of the revenge instead of her 20 husbands but ffs there’s still more to support having her as a captain than izzy

and i just gotta wonder 🤔 what does izzy have that these four characters don’t that makes some fans think izzy would somehow be a better captain??? 🤔🤔 rlly makes you think 🤔🤔🤔

I noticed there’s simultaneously both more and less historical accuracy this season. The real Blackbeard did shoot Izzy in the leg, there are a lot more historical figures like Ned Low, Mary Read, Anne Bonny and Zheng Yi Sao, and Stede Bonnet did make prisoners walk the plank.

Izzy hands also sings a song from the 1940s, Ned Low uses the word lolz, and technically Zheng wasn’t born until 1775.

I love it.

So I know none of us look for historical realism in OFMD, but one of Zheng Yi Sao's lines had me thinkin' so I hope you all will indulge me in a bit of speculation!

At one point, Zheng Yi Sao says to Stede that she's dated guys on wanted posters, and that they're hot but ultimately not worth all the trouble.

In real life, Zheng Yi Sao was married to Zheng Yi, a very very famous Chinese pirate who undoubtedly would have graced more than a few wanted posters (that's what Zheng Yi Sao means, actually, it literally means "wife of Zheng Yi"). She took over the ships and crews under his command after his death.

The interesting thing here is that Zheng Yi's death was very mysterious. He supposedly fell overboard during a storm, but accounts of this are wildly varied in the details and also sketchy as hell. There was massive speculation both at the time and today that Zheng Yi Sao killed him.

Zheng Yi Sao's line about having dated the hot guys on wanted posters really makes me wonder - are we going to come back to that? Is Zheng Yi the hot guy she dated, and perhaps ultimately killed because he was a hot mess (or even just because she knew she could get better use out of his fleet than he ever did)?

heyyyyyy uh since zheng is trying to take over the caribbean too now. dyou think maybe the reason she saved stede and his crew from jackie and then took them on as crew is bc she wanted to get blackbeard to work with (for) her and she figured stede would be good leverage (since stede's apparently been waxing poetic abt his beloved edward at her soup kiosk every day). like dyou think she was going to use stede as a hostage ("join me or i'll kill him")?? or maybe as a bartering chip ("join me and i'll give him to you so you can kill exact your revenge")??
