DP x DC: The Most Dangerous Card Game
Ok so Danny has essentially claimed earth as his. And he is fully aware that there are constant threats to the planet. Now he can’t stop a threat that originates on earth (that’s something he’ll leave to the Justice league) but he can do something about outside threats. Doing some research on ancient spells, rituals, and artifacts, he cast a world wide barrier on the planet to protect it from hostile threats so they cannot enter. This will prevent another Pariah Dark incident. However, barriers like this come at a price. You see, there are two ways to make a barrier. Either make one powered up by your own energy and power (which would be constantly draining) or set up a barrier with rules. The way magic works is that nothing can be absolutely indestructible. It must have a weakness. The most powerful barriers weren’t the ones reinforced with layer after layer of protective charms and buffed up with power. Those could eventually be destroyed either by being overpowered, wearing them down, or by cutting off the original power source. No, the most powerful barriers were the ones with a deliberate weakness. A barrier indestructible except for one spot. A cage that can only be opened from the outside. Or that can only be passed with a key or by solving a riddle. So Danny chooses this type of barrier and does the necessary ritual and pours in enough power to make it. And he adds his condition for anyone to enter.
Now the Justice league? Find out about the barrier when Trigon attempts to attack, they were preparing after he threatened what he would do once he got to earth. How he would destroy them. The Justice league tried to take the fight to him first but were utterly destroyed, so they retreated home to tend to their injuries, and fortify earth for one. Last. Stand. Only when Trigon makes his big entrance…he’s stopped.
The Justice league watch in awe as this thin see-through barrier with beautiful green swirls and speckled white lights like stars apears blocking Trigon and his army’s advance. The barrier looks so thin and fragile yet no matter how hard the warlord hits, none of his attacks can get through and neither can he damage said barrier. That’s when Constantine and Zatanna recognizes what this barrier is. Something only a powerful entity could create. For a moment, the league is filled with hope that Trigon can’t get through yet Constantine also explains that it’s not impenetrable. And clearly Trigon knows this too for he calls out a challenge.
And that’s when, in a flash of light, a tiny glowing teenager appears. He looked absolutly minuscule compared to Trigon and yet practically glowed with power (this isn’t a King Danny AU though).
And that is when the conditions for passing the barrier are revealed. And the Justice realize that the only thing stopping Trigon and his army from decimating earth. The only way he can get through….is by beating this glowing teenager in a card game.
Not just any card game though. The most convoluted game Sam, Danny, and Tucker invented themselves. It’s like the infinite realms version of magic the gathering, combined with Pokémon, and chess. And Danny is the master. So sit down Trigon and let’s play.
(The most intense card game of the Justice league’s life).
After Danny wins, this happens a few more times with outer word beings and possibly even demons attempting to invade earth, yet none have been able to beat the mysterious teenager in a card game. Constantine might even take a crack at it and try to figure out how to play. He’s really bad though. Every time this happens, the Justice league worry that this might be the time the teenager looses. Yet every time, he wins (even if only barely).
Meanwhile, Danny, Sam, and Tucker have gotten addicted to the game and play it almost daily. Some teachers might seem them playing the game are are like ‘awww how cute’ not realizing this game is literally saving the world. Jazz is just happy they aren’t spending as much time on their screens playing Doomed.

OKAY who wants to hear about why i think nimona challenges amatonormativity? you do! 🫵
one of the main ways this is accomplished is through ballister and ambrosius’s relationship. it’s arguable that it doesn’t necessarily fit the traditional model of romance - not only are they a queer interracial couple, and not only is their relationship ambiguous in the book, but there are certain instances, especially in the movie, that subvert traditional ideas of romance and friendship.
one instance that really stands out to me is when the director asks ambrosius what’s on his mind and he goes on his imagined rant about how arm-chopping isn’t a love language - you know the one. when he mentions ballister, he refers to him as “the man i love, my best friend.” and not just one or the other, but both! the man i love, and my best friend. he places equal emphasis on both the romantic and platonic aspects of the relationship, valuing ballister in both a romantic context and a platonic context without treating either one as more important than the other.
and even moments such as the first “i love you” and the kiss manage to subvert tradition. both of these things are generally seen as a pretty big deal, especially in fiction - if the characters are kissing or saying “i love you,” it’s usually a moment in which everything changes. a line is drawn, dividing the story into after and now. sometimes it’s dramatic and climactic, with fireworks and a swell of music, but even when it isn’t it’s still seen as a turning point of sorts. now it’s official, now it’s real. but this isn’t the case in nimona. both moments are certainly significant - they do a good job of showcasing the character development and where ballister and ambrosius are on their respective journeys, and are certainly important in terms of representation - but neither one follows the path that most fictional romance does.
another way in which nimona challenges amatonormativity would be the emphasis on friendship! in the tavern scene (in the movie) when ambrosius suggests killing nimona, ballister disagrees and says “she’s my friend.” ambrosius replies with “aren’t i more than that?”, implying he’s more important than a friend - thus upholding amatonormative ideas. ballister becomes angry at that and leaves - challenging this idea and prioritizing his platonic relationship with nimona over his romantic one with ambrosius, as nimona is the one he wants to defend.
additionally, a big part of this scene is the way ballister deliberately rejects institute values while ambrosius unintentionally upholds them. and because the story challenges homophobia and transphobia (and other forms of bigotry) through the lens of the institute, it would make sense for it to challenge amatonormativity too! it’s something that’s become incredibly normalized, to the point that lots of people don’t even know it exists, and this is reminiscent of the institute brainwashing, especially when it comes to ambrosius - he’s been manipulated his whole life and probably genuinely doesn’t understand the level to which he’s internalized institute beliefs.
ballister prioritizes nimona many times, actually. when he tells ambrosius she’s “smart, kind, and quite sophisticated,” when he’s overjoyed to see her again at the end, when he refuses to kill her and saves her instead. over and over, he proves how much he cares about her, even when this involves directly going against what ambrosius wants - which, of course, is really what the institute wants. a core tenant of amatonormativity is the false notion that romantic relationships are more important or valuable than other types of relationships, but ballister actively goes against this!
to conclude, as a story that at its core is about identity and challenging societal beliefs, nimona defies expectations and traditional ideas of what it should or shouldn’t be. it’s possible that amatonormativity wasn’t what the creators had in mind, but the story still manages to challenge it with grace and elegance. just like its main character, nimona refuses to conform to what others want it to be.

What?? Why on Earth would they bloodlet Machete when he's already anemic?
Anemia wasn't discovered until 1852, so his physicians have no idea. He's just moody and achy and visibly unwell and bloodletting happens to be the cure-for-all fix at the time.
I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say it was one of the most used treatments in western medicine from ancient Greece to 19th century (and even earlier than that in Egypt, for example). There weren't many ailments that a little bit of breathing a vein wouldn't alleviate, supposedly. This whole concept is based on humoral theory which is a fascinating cornerstone of medical history and also completely unfounded nonsense, look it up if you haven't, it's interesting. People believed that blood didn't circulate through the body, it was created, used up and then the bad blood would stagnate in the extremities. Having too much blood would disturb your humoral balance and create illnesses so removing it was beneficial to your wellbeing. Even completely healthy people would sometimes go get themselves bled a bit just to be sure.
You kind of need blood for your body to function so this treatment was completely pointless at best and life threatening at worst. If you were sick to begin with it would only weaken you further (and expose you to potential infections, which in the absence of antibiotics, wasn't great). The only viable use for it would have to be rare blood disorders where your body produces too many red blood cells, like polycythemia vera, essentially the polar opposite of anemia.

something something It's very interesting to me how Aperture is consistently a sort of mirror to the Combine Citadel. Two buildings built by entirely different hands, one not even of earthly origin, yet both fulfilling the same purpose - dehumanize, control, conceal.
Both facilities treat humans as a resource. As some kind of cargo to be stored as efficiently as possible, later to be processed and discarded. They both cram people picked off the streets into tiny boxes where they're then preserved for god knows how long, denied even the dignity of death.
They both shift restlessly, uncaring for who or what their many writhing arms may crush
They build themselves out of themselves, countless corridors and chasms built seemingly for no one to ever traverse. The buildings feel as if they weren't even built with humans in mind, sparse catwalks scattered about as a mere afterthought.
Even the people who are meant to be in control are barely accounted for. Offices feel like either the bare minimum, or a strange alien approximation of an environment a human could work within. In neither cases were they built for comfort. Only for utility.
Aperture as both a company and a facility shows that humanity, under the right conditions, would have come a little too close to becoming a perfect mirror image of the Combine. If things hadn't gone wrong, it's safe to say humanity was on track for exactly that. Black Mesa wanted to exploit Xen, just like the Combine wanted to exploit Earth. Hell, while those two were at it, Aperture was too busy exploiting itself, and doing a damn good job at it. Both Aperture and the Universal Union are systems where literally no one was benefitting from the status quo, because they were too busy slaving away maintaining it. The Combine is just what Humanity would have become if it wasn't stopped at the very first hurdle. Flesh and machine, living and functional - both turned synonymous.

More rise!leo x fem reader, nsfw
This is a targeted attack. cw: choking? Uhh... Edging... losing control?
---
Leo is shining with sweat. Squirming. Pulling against the ropes until they creak. Trying to lift his hips, to push his length further into your mouth. You can tell he's getting close again by the way his breath hitches, but the way his markings start to flicker.
Not yet, though. Not yet.
When you pull off of him, his hips try to chase you. Restrained as he is, he can't manage more than a pathetic rut into open air. His entire body shudders as his head falls back in frustration.
"Please," he begs with a groan. You can tell he's starting to get really, really frustrated. "Please, please."
You sit back on your calves, admiring the way the ropes criss-cross over his arms, his plastron, his legs. The way he's splayed open for you, his swollen cock leaking and twitching as he strains against his bindings. You tilt your head, pretending to think about your answer. Then you reach into the bedside drawer and pull out a ball gag before strapping it onto his face.
The glare Leo sends you makes you shiver, but you just smile and keep your eyes on his as you dip your head back down to take him in your mouth once more. Almost immediately, the anger on his face turns into something else, something wounded and pleading. You know exactly how to swirl your tongue, exactly how to suck on the head of his cock, to have him on the edge in less than a minute. When you pull away, again, his growl, even muffled like it is by the gag, makes the air thrum around you.
The dark glare returns, and you see sparks running up and down his arms as his eyes flash. Something about his severe expression makes you want to push a little further, even if you might regret it later.
"If you really want it," you coo up at him, "come and take it."
His eyes go completely white. Before you can fully process the spike of fear that strikes through your chest, he's flexing hard against the ropes. The snap of them breaking rings sharply in your ears, and suddenly you're on your back with one large hand around your throat. Leo uses his free hand to rip the gag from his mouth and toss it to the side. He leans down, his face hovering inches from your own, and tightens his grip on your throat until you choke, until you instinctively hold onto his wrist with both hands.
Your head pounds in time with your heartbeat, and his steady, rumbling growls mix with the rushing of blood in your ears. You claw weakly at his arm, and the longer he chokes you the more your eyes start to flutter, the more your thoughts grow hazy and slow. Finally, he eases his grip, and you suck in a desperate breath. His face stays inches from your own, his eyes still white as he watches you shake beneath him.
"Stay still," he seethes. When you nod, wide eyed and still wheezing, the hand on your neck disappears. In the next second, he yanks your shorts and underwear down in one rough motion. His hands grip the underside of your thighs and push your legs up and apart, and when his dick spears into you with no warning, a loud, broken moan punches out of you.
His markings light up again as he starts to move. You were already soaked from edging him for so long, but the wild look in his eyes as he watches himself pump in and out of you has you growing slicker around him. You can feel the vibrations of his constant growling in your core.
God. Fuck.
He moves both hands from your thighs to your breasts and pinches your nipples hard. When you arch up and cry out, his mouth comes down to sink his teeth into your still-tender neck.
It's all you can do to stay still as he wrecks your fucking world. Somehow, despite how many times you've brought him to the edge tonight, he makes you come twice before he finally does with a growl that makes your entire body vibrate.
His teeth release your neck, and there's a long moment where he just lays on top of you and breathes hard into your skin. When he pushes himself up and stares down at you, his eyes are no longer white and the glow of his markings has faded.
“You actually made me lose it, hermosa,” he croaks with a smirk. “Damn.”
You can't really find it in you to respond. Your tongue feels heavy in your mouth.
“Don't worry.” The smirk turns sharp, and your pulse quickens again at the mischievous look in his eyes. “I'm not done with you yet.”
-
Hours later you'll be able to appreciate the irony of your punishment being overstimulation. You can't find it in yourself to regret a single thing.
