Please stop trying to educate me about real disabilities I was just talking about popular fanon in fanfiction that I find illogical. I wasn't trying to say that disabled people shouldn't have cool jobs, I was trying to say that fanfictional Prowl fainting every time he gets very surprised puts his subordinates lives at risk.

It's about the way the trope is handled in fanfics not about real world and people pls

One thing about the majority of Cass using ASL takes that I don't enjoy (besides the obvious) is that people often remove ASL from the context of American Deaf culture. ASLis a part of the American Deaf identity and a lot of signs are intrinsically tied to Deaf history. Hearing people have historically tried to eradicate ASL for Deaf people (see the Milan Conference) while praising hearing people for learning it (see 'baby ASL' and linguistic appropriation). Deaf people aren't a monolith, but a lot of Deaf people (and CODAs) do not recommend hearing people teaching ASL and recommend learning from Deaf people (here's an 'okay if it's the last option' opinion).

Learning ASL entails learning about and participating in Deaf culture, but I rarely see fanon Cass doing any of that. It raises questions such as who taught Cass ASL? One of the hearing Batfam members? This is problematic because they do have the resources to get a Deaf teacher, so if they didn't it's weird (speaking of - the Batfam should also have learned ASL from Deaf people). Secondly, it shows a lack of care when hearing people write fanfics but put no research into ASL or why it matters to Deaf people. So much of the motivation behind ASL!Cass is for disability representation, but is it really representation if you're removing ASL from a Deaf context and slapping it onto a character that a) isn't d/Deaf and whose disability makes all languages hard and b) is completely isolated from the people she's taking the language from?

If you're writing Cass using ASL, don't forget that ASL isn't just a signpost of disability to use in fiction, it's a highly valued and culturally important language to real life people. Regardless of whether Cass 'can' use ASL according to canon, this is a language belonging to a real-life marginalised group that deserves more respect than being used in a surface-level way for fics or the punchline of a headcanon. ALSO, Cass should NOT be giving out sign names unless it's an AU!!!
