I am curious, what were your thoughts about like Winter King or first opening? Or like about overall more mature stuff than in og adventure time

So now that I'm doing a huge rewatch of the OG Adventure Time, I will say I adore both in their own ways.

It was really cool seeing the more mature stuff in Fionna and Cake, sort of like the show 'grew up' with the audience, you know? And do NOT get me started on how much my heart was destroyed by Simons entire plight through.

See I never managed to finish the first show, mostly just got distracted, but on my rewatch I can tell I at least got through six seasons. I like how spaced out the original show is, and it makes the really sad shit with like the Ice King hit like a ton of bricks when it happens. It really feels like you're watching all these wacky people live their lives, and occasionally the horror of the Mushroom War reminds you of its effect, through Marceline, and the Ice King, and every character who was forced to live through it. I don't know, it's really nice!

Okay I'm gonna ramble so I'm putting a read more!

I was wondering if on a rewatch I'd get frustrated the way later seasons of Steven Universe made me get frustrated, but it never felt like that at all. It's just been... fun. It's just Finn and Jake on adventures, occasionally having to set down their fun and recognize the horror of things around them, and it's just. DAMN it's just done so well.

I just got to the episode where Finn meets Prismo and makes the wish, and accidentally ends up wielding the power of the crown, and all it did was break my heart. Like I was sitting there, and for a split second I was like 'wow that crown corrupted him really fast!' and then I remembered.... he was like 13 when he got the crown. He was still a child, and when Simon got the crown, he was what, in his 40s? He was just a kid, and couldn't possibly be able to handle or combat the crowns power. It just punched me in the gut.

So I very much enjoy how spaced out and silly the original Adventure Time is, because its such a unique world I love seeing more of it, and I feel like it makes the heavy scenes hit so much harder. With Fionna and Cake, I love how tight the story is and how structured things are. They're both SUCH good shows, with different ways of writing and different vibes and I adore them equally at this point.

ALSO THE WINTER KING, holy shit don't get me started, but I will rant about this mofo

Firstly, I fucking LOVE the Winter King, and I'm really sad we didn't get more of him. I do wonder if the fact that Fionna's universe wasn't 'canon' during all the universe hopping, that if somehow the multiverse will reverse some things and 'repair' the damage. I'm not even saying that because I want to see the Winter King again, it just absolutely sounds like something that could happen in Adventure Time. Hell, look how they made Fionna and Cake just-- real! Thanks Prismo you're a cool guy.

But in terms of the Winter King as a character, and in terms of his universe? I want SO much more detail. Where is Finn, where is Jake? Marceline either left the Winter King or got killed, so I'm curious there too. The juxtaposition of genuine confidence and whimsy, and the mans incapacity to feel remorse or even real deep sadness (him saying 'Oh! The dead one?' when Simon asked about Betty was... holy shit) he was just an EXTREMELY interesting character, and I so badly want to see more of him.

Also dude was just funny. The fact he straight up admitted he thought about kissing his alternative universe self was so fucking funny, and plays heavily into his narcissistic behavior and tendencies.

On TOP of that, the idea of how he ended up cursing Bubblegum specifically would be so interesting. I read online people assuming when the Ice King did his spell, it was more like "I want Princess Bubblegum to love me, so I'll do a spell so she can understand what I'm feeling and then she'll marry me!" but then the 'understand what I'm feeling' is actually just... "Hey, I feel absolute madness, here, take it off my hands!' and might have just been a huge accident. We certainly can't trust Winter King's words about it.

I don't know. He was so fascinating, and the way he put feelers out to see if Simon would feel the way he does (Specifically talking about making an Ice Betty, then realizing Simon was disturbed so he shrugged it off with a laugh, being like 'no thats immoral obviously haha') and the fact that he was so cautious and smart about avoiding telling Simon how he conquered the crown? Like he would be glad to help and teach Simon how to keep his sanity AND his power... but obviously would have never spoken his secret the more he realized Simon would morally object to it.

I dunno. This character was in the show for 20 minutes and he was so fucking interesting I almost feel robbed. I hope maybe we can get some Adventure Time comics about the guy at the VERY least!

So I watched Fiona And Cake and I'm hooked...

First episode:

I love how it started with all the colors and how it felt! The voice acting was spot on and it felt surreal with the pastel theme.

"I don't wanna go to work......" Relatable... Especially since my school will start soon...

The way Cake is acting really true actually! Minus the ice... Also when cats ears and nose are cold that means they are healthy! If their hot then that means the cat is sick.

I honestly did not know Fionna's job was a thing....

When I saw Marshall Lee I screamed. I live for his DESIGN! And his personality.

Love Fern's hair. That's all I have to say.

I missed Simon so much!

I don't like how he's basically a human attraction to the citizens. I just don't feel comfortable with that cause of anxiety and I don't like getting asked questions in general.

I personally think that kid should've just left Simon alone and not talk about his past to HIS ENTIRE FAMILY!

I do think what's interesting about the trauma of Simon is that he's so traumatized from his past as the "Ice King" to the point he can't look at ice without freaking out. It's like soldiers who have been in wars and are so traumatized by loud sounds to the point they just at times attack.

I like Finn's new design! It matches well with now personality.

And I like how TV (One of Jake's kids) is with him.

So wait Jake's DEAD!?

Blindfolded into a forest... What could go wrong?

I really love the forest layout cause of colorful and bright it is! It blends in with the vibe it's going for.

I was at first like "Woah there's blood!" When Jake killed the fish but then it made sense cause Adventure Time came out year's ago and they now they're audience has grown since then so it makes sense.

I would love to hear more stories from before Simon was the Ice King.

More things that I noticed about Simon when he was fighting the bear thing is that he's not a fighter, he's not violent, he's just trying to fit in the best he can but even he can't cause of how people keep reminding him about his past as the Ice King.

I know what Finn did was irresponsible cause he just blindfolded Simon and led him into a forest but let me explain. He's lost Jake. And when Jake dies he was probably and most likely devastated since he lost the only person he was mostly close to a that was like a brother to him. That's his way of coping with stuff! But he doesn't know alot about Simon so he tried to do the one thing that helped HIM! He tried.

I was so HAPPY to see Marceline and Bubblegum again!

I find it very funny that Bubblegum's skin sticks to the tattoo gun.

Love Marceline's new hair cut as well.

I just Simon to be happy with his wife! Is that to much to ask!?😭

Also I think I catched a Steven universe reference when Cake came out Simon's hair.

This episode was heavy and full of emotion to unpack and I think I like that!

Early production deep-dive - Part 2: The new Nicktoon   

It wasn’t until October 2001, during a dinner with Nickelodeon’s executives Albie Hetch and Kevin Kay, that he would pitch the idea for Danny Phantom and end up with a deal for the pilot on the spot:

“Butch Hartman: To top it off they said, "Hey, got any other ideas?" Whoa. This was a big moment. I had Danny Phantom in my head, but I wasn't really prepared to talk about it and I had no idea they were gonna ask me this. What do I do?? Well, I did the obvious - I held my breath and dove in. So, with really nothing more than the cool name I'd thought up, and a few drawings (which I didn't even have with me, I had to describe them!) plus a few other character ideas - best friends, parents, etc. I told them about the show in about 30 seconds. There was a pause and then Albie - the big boss - said, "Can you have the pilot episode done by March?" That was it. It was sold just like that in a restaurant in October, 2001. Butch once again contacted Boyle and Marmel, who were also part of the Fairly OddParents crew at the time, and together they worked on the pilot until January 2002, when Nickelodeon executive Margie Cohn, and Kevin Kay informed him that Nick was asking for 6 episodes now:

“Butch Hartman: This was huge news! Now we were officially making a series! This means we had to stop everything and regroup. We were making Danny into a series now and we really had to be aware of the progression of the characters and the expansion of Danny's world. So work commenced on building the Danny Phantom universe: Amity Park. Fenton Works. His friends, his family, what specific powers he had, etc. (Keep in mind, we were still making Fairly Oddparents at the same!) Everyone involved was awesome. We brought on character designers Shannon Tindell and Steve Silver. They pretty much came up with all the main character designers except for Danny. That was mostly me, then Steven Silver jumped in and we finalized it together. Then Shannon left and character designer Ben Balestreri was brought in. He really helped move things along, too. (S1E1) Steven Universe: Revolutionizing LGBTQ Representation in Cartoons

Hey there, I’m Mia, and welcome to the first entry of my blog! All of my posts are going to follow a similar structure, with the first half being about the show I’m covering, with a summary, what I enjoyed about it, and all that good stuff. The second half would explain what effect it had on the greater cartoon landscape, or what it represents in the industry. Today I’m going to be talking about a cartoon that’s very close to my heart: Steven Universe. The show first aired in May 2013 on Cartoon Network and ran for 5 seasons, a movie, and a single-season epilogue series. It’s about this kid named Steven, a half-human half-alien hybrid, who’s being raised by three ancient alien warriors named Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl (as you can see in the intro). Together they fight monsters and protect the earth from danger. These aliens are called gems, and every member of their species is based off a different kind of gemstone, from physical, chemical, and spiritual standpoints (which I think is REALLY cool, by the way). Over time, Steven Universe’s focus goes from wacky adventures to exploring deeper themes, such as grief, toxic relationships, depression, and living up to other people's expectations. The show has been praised for its absolutely stunning animation, incredible songs, and the way they developed their characters. It also has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, if you care about that kinda thing. 

Now let me tell you, I absolutely LOVED this show as a kid! I watched every episode as it came out, I drew fanart (see the picture below… Also ignore how bad it is. I drew it when I was like 13, okay?), I made my own gem-inspired characters, and it really impacted my view on the world. A major part of the show is its message of treating others with kindness and acceptance, which I try to live by to this day. 

Now then, how did it revolutionize queer representation, do you ask? Well, a majority of the characters on this show are part of the LGBTQ community. Stevonnie is a nonbinary character, the first out of many to appear on the show. Pearl is in love (though it’s unrequited) with Rose Quartz, Steven’s late gem mother. Every gem character on the show, in fact, are feminine-presenting agender beings. And Garnet, the most important character for this section, is actually two characters: Ruby and Sapphire, who were so in love that they vowed to fuse together and live as one for eternity (super adorable by the way oh my goodness). All of these characters were probably my first time seeing prominent non-cishet characters on TV, and the same thing can be said for a lot of people around my age at the time. It wasn’t easy for the show to do this, however. The most explicitly queer characters, Ruby and Sapphire, had to be censored in many non-North-American countries, with kisses cut out and some languages using masculine pronouns to refer to the more butch of the two, Ruby.

Despite all this pushback, Rebecca Sugar (the creator of the show) and their crew worked hard to make sure their characters were allowed to be who they really were on-screen. All this came to a climax during the 2018 episode “Reunited”, where Ruby and Sapphire have an entire on-screen wedding ceremony to celebrate their love. This was a HUGE deal at the time, and even countries where equal marriage was banned HAD to air the episode, due to about a million other plot-essential things happening during the second half. I vividly remember staying up until midnight JUST to watch the episode as it was released online, as I was extremely invested in the pairing.

Being able to have a queer wedding episode was no easy feat, and the Steven Universe crew had to fight hard with the network executives for them to allow it, but in the end, it was all worth it. After SU was able to break boundaries for queer representation in cartoons, other shows came along and were able to have out and proud LGBT characters as well! Adventure Time, which Rebecca Sugar started working on before moving to their own show, featured a kiss between two of its lead female characters: Princess Bubblegum and Marceline. The Owl House had the Disney Channel’s first openly bisexual protagonist AND first nonbinary character, Viewers were able to see a beautiful relationship blossom between Luz Noceda (the main character) and Amity Blight, her girlfriend, and Raine Whispers, who uses they/them pronouns has to be one of my favourite characters in the entire series!

Though this representation doesn’t only mean a lot to the world of animated television, it also means a lot to ME. I’m nonbinary and queer, and my family isn’t the most accepting of people who share my identities, so it meant the world to little 13-year-old Mia, who was ashamed of who they were, being able to see characters who were just like them! Those characters, as unimportant as the casual viewer might find them to be, allowed me to see parts of myself represented for the very first time. People like me were able to exist and be themselves, unapologetically, and it inspired me to do the same, many years later.

With Season 10 finished, here are five Death Battles MUs I'd like to see

I don't think it is surprising to anyone who follows me that I'm a fan of the Rooster Teeth acquired series Death Battle. It's probably my big guilty pleasure series, and I've talked multiple times before about Death Battle MUs that I've wanted to see, but this time, I'm taking this a bit more seriously.

So, what are the likelihoods of any of these match-ups making full episodes? Probably not very, but it's not like they're not possible to do. I'm going to make it so not all of these picks have obscure characters, but I will have a couple more obscure characters on here.

Also to make things more clean, I will be disqualifying any match-ups that have been part of my Disney Duels Polls, so these are five of the many match-ups I would like to see Death Battle tackle.

#5. Lister & Rimmer vs Grif & Simmons (Red Dwarf vs Red vs Blue)

This one is at the bottom of the list because, I've already talked to death about this one, straight up even writing my own battle between these guys, which you can read here if you're interested.

This is a really good idea though because Grif and Lister are both underachieving, slobby, kind of in a position they really don't want to be in, and Rimmer and Simmons are both uptight, arrogant, rule-following, pseudo-human smeg heads. I think this would be a really fun battle between them both, and it's about time Red vs Blue got an episode with an opponent from a different franchise.

#4. Odo vs Shane Gooseman (Star Trek: Deep Space 9 vs Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers)

Okay, I'll be honest, I know next to nothing about The Galaxy Rangers, that was not something that aired on Teletoon Retro when I was a kid, in fact I really struggled to find a good MU for Odo, so this is more of my Dad's suggestion.

Can you believe that ten seasons have gone by, and not a single Star Trek MU? No, Kirk, Spock, Picard, Q, Sisko, Bashir, Garrak, Odo, Dax, not a single MU, well I think season 11 should have one, and while I'm gonna bet they'll probably have Captain Kirk, I can hope that they make this duel between the shapeshifters of space.

#3. Cybersix vs Jack (Cybersix vs BioShock)

Okay, this one would just be awesome. These two are genetically engineered who ultimately rebel against their creators. Oh this one would be so good, I wanted to write this as a battle, but I just... never felt like it. Writing is weird, don't take it up as a hobby.

I think this would be good too because BioShock could really use an MU, it is a franchise that is fading into irrelevancy a little, which sucks because the first game was so good, but I think it still has some interest that this battle could be done. Hey, if people can still be asking for Cole MacGrath vs Alex Mercer or Travis Touchdown vs Jack Cayman, I don't see why I can't ask for this one.

#2. Katara vs Lapis Lazuli (Avatar vs Steven Universe)

Straight up, Steven Universe needs another MU, and the Crystal Gems are so full of potential for match-ups, like Garnet vs The Meta, Jasper vs Luke Cage, Pearl vs Undyne (Though I'd personally prefer Pearl vs Zuko), and one I've been hoping for for ages, Katara vs Lapis Lazuli.

Two absurdly powerful water-benders pushing each other to their limits, this one would be so good. Plus. correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think they've done a full on Aquamancer themed match-up, I think the closest may be Aquaman vs SpongeBob? But that was a joke... and kinda sucked.

Anyway, number 1!

#1. Lief vs Bilbo Baggins (Deltora Quest vs Lord of the Rings)

This is the Match-up I've been wanting since season one... Okay well more specifically I was asking for Lief vs Frodo, but my brother is more of a Tolkien fan than I am and he told me that Lief vs Bilbo was a better idea, so I'll go with that one.

However, the characters don't matter too much, because the real battle I'm curious about is between the Belt of Deltora and the One Ring.

Okay, bear with me, The Belt of Deltora is a magical belt, it can only be worn by the true king and it has several gemstones on each piece, gem has a magical ability, like the Topaz which can strengthen a clean ones mind, and the Lapis Lazuli that protects from evil.

I want to know if the Belt of Deltora can protect Lief from the One Ring, and if Bilbo could use the ring's corruption to his advantage.

I was a big Deltora Quest fan in middle school, I even found the anime adaptation on YouTube, so I really want more people to get into the series and pull it from obscurity, because I really want people to talk about this with.

Anyway, these were five Death Battle Match-ups I'm itching to see, here's hoping they eventually happen.

Ooh!! Okay so I was in honor choir t-three times? Two maybe? The first time I was in Junior high we had to audition to get chosen. Then we took a bus back to the school or theatre they had us practice in and we performed at a big named theater in our area 😄 the second was basically the same thing but without the audition. And I THINK I had a third one in there somewhere but I can’t remember.

I don’t have very many successes in life but I am in my city’s time capsule so 😎

This one used to be easy to answer COUGH PALAYE ROYALE COUGH. 😒 actually it still kinda is. I really love MCR and Set it Off. Epecially SIO. I LOVE Cody Carson’s voice. 44: My favorite TV Show

Last but not easiest! I can’t say I have one 😭 I like a lot of shows but I don’t have any one favorite I could turn on and just unwind. I know a lot of people love like the office, use it as background noise, and can quote it easily. I don’t have that kind of love or relationship with anything in particular. Back in the past I GUESS it would have been Adventure time or Steven universe but as of now I’ve come to this knife fight empty handed. 🤔 that said I’m SO excited for Umbrella Academy to drop the final season. Oh also I feel like I have to mention that I love Fruits Basket with all my heart 🩷♥️🩷♥️🩷

the sheer idea of living with two ghosts in a home is so warming, in a way of that they’re comfortable with you and you’re comfortable with them. imagine how long it has been since someone welcomed them just as they did, but everyone left the next day; so it was almost alien when reader moved in.

thrilling, really. with the small bookshelf in one of your rooms, tommy idly knocks on your door and shuffled in holding a book. just a small, “can you read this for me?” because it has been so long since he had read a book.

or wilbur watching you from the top floor through a window, a frown gracing his lips because he wants to help you garden. he wants to touch the dirt, feel the sun against his face again. so when your hands cup his jaw, he becomes stunned for a moment just because you remind him of the sun.

he envies your friends and anyone who gets to interact with you outside; becoming rather sour whenever you tell him someone is picking you up. idk if you ever watched steven universe but i feel like both boys would have something similar to blue diamond.

if one starts crying, you feel your eyes become glossy and tears start falling. you could feel yourself become heavy, as if the whole world came crashing down.

imagine making them new foods that they never had back in their time. the curious glint in their eyes when watching you move around the kitchen, and soon, one plate turned into three.

wilbur cleaning the house when you’re not home because the first time you came back exhausted and he watched you tiredly clean; his heart shattered. since then, he made it a mission to clean while you’re own. the smile on your face is always worth it. he’s sad that he cannot go with you on your adventures but knowing you’re not moving anytime soon is enough.

They’re so thrilled when you don’t run out of the house, screaming bloody murder. Like- your actually talking to them and giving them a chance. Hell- that’s more than enough.

Every night before tommy sleeps (yes ghost can sleep in this au bc I feel bad-), he’s always asking you to read him a story before he goes to bed. It’s comforting. He was super young when he passed too, so its kinda like he gets to finish his childhood.

I think the Steven sides of the triangle are easier to make happen, because Steven wears his heart on his sleeve (see: gushing over Layla after knowing her for 5 minutes), and is willing to put in the effort to drag the emotions out of somebody more closed-off (see: the entire Duat). So he can take the emotional initiative with both Marc and Jake.

Marc is more closed-off and withdrawn, with this persistent underlying feeling of "I don't deserve nice things, I don't get to ask for things I want, I shouldn't even think about wanting things." (Layla definitely also took a lot of emotional initiative, or they wouldn't have ended up together in the first place.)

And Jake -- okay, his MCU scenes are tiny and his comicverse characterization is wildly inconsistent, but here's the version I write, based on "cherry-picking only the character notes I like and mashing them all together."

Jake is willing to be open and sociable about surface-level things, but his underlying hang-up is "I can't talk about things that are really important to me, those are vulnerabilities, and if I'm too obvious about them, they'll be used against me."

So Marc's first instinct when he finds out about Jake is "oh no, this must be someone scary and dangerous and monstrous, because I know how bad I am, and if I couldn't handle knowing about him before, how much worse must he be?"

Which just reinforces Jake's existing approach of "showing any weakness or soft spots is a bad idea, and Marc in particular doesn't like or trust me at all, so why would I risk being vulnerable in front of him?"

I figure they would soften up toward each other once the whole system spends some time adventuring together...but then they get caught in a standoff where both of them think "okay, that guy's not so bad, maybe I even care about him...but he's obviously still got his walls up against me, so I'm gonna be cool and keep my distance and not make this weird."

So to make the good ship actually sail, you need some outside force to break the standoff! Or else they'll keep spinning around in that infinite loop forever.

Personal favorite approach is for Steven to break the loop. He did the feelings-wrangling for each of these idiots individually -- he can bloody well roll up his sleeves and tackle both at the same time, if that's what it takes!

(...This is the approach I'm taking in the Cover of Knight universe, and, well, we're 100K+ words in, and Jake+Marc are still only at the point of "we can let ourselves show affection toward each other IF Steven's in the middle to act as a buffer." It's totally possible they're headed towards "okay, sure, technically we're having full-on hot headspace sex with each other -- but only because Steven thinks it's hot to watch, and we think it's hot to indulge him -- it's not like we like each other or anything.")

Spark is really talented. Like REALLY talented. They can pick up concepts very easily and do not need to study to do well in school. Sadly because of that they cannot put in any effort into anything ever and need to take every single shortcut they can to success.

I'll be honest I barely have voice headcanons for my characters in general, at most I think Spark has a sort of annoying, nasal voice, perhaps they sound kinda like Shelby Rabara as Peridot in Steven Universe

In terms of like, irl media Spark would like, I think they'd be a fan of battle shounen anime, and I think they'd be an Adventure Time fan just due to Marceline and Princess Bubblegum, but I don't think they have a set in stone favorite tbh they give me "I like 50 different things and I can't gauge how they compare against each other" vibes

Oh Spark is a heavy sleeper, they sleep late and wake up late and need 6 billion alarms to MAYBE wake up on time. They sleep on their right side, and use as little covering as possible because they don't really like feeling Textures on them (which is part of why they wear very revealing clothing, though that's also due to being a show-off lol)

Name: My name is perfectly clear to grasp, it's Dan..and I am one of Nathan's alter-ego.

Species: Were-Aykroyd. It's a well known fact there's lots of me.

Age: N/A. I am practically ageless, so I don't have to worry about people asking me about m age, age is but a number to me.

Personality: I am a complex creature, sometimes I can be your best friend if you treat me right but if you don't I can be your worst nightmare, I am socially awkward and adorkable but extremely savy when it comes to horror, I was a character actor at the Mystic Museum Camp Horror attraction and as such played the character of a video store clerk, that in turn helped make me skilled at being a killer when I play a villain. Favorite Anime: Pokemon, Yu Gi Oh, Star Wars: Visions, Akira, Vampire Hunter D, Jojo's Bizarre Advneture, Devilman Crybaby, Digimon, Castlevania. I got into Jojo thanks to Nathan explaining how the vampires in that universe worked and how the Stands work so I made myself a counterpart.

Family: Elwood Blues, Ellis Fielding, Tom Everett, Passenger (Twilight Zone the movie), Julius Jenson, Dr Keats, Captain Milligan, Ray Stantz, Ray Zalinski, Darren 'Mother' Roscow, Harry Sultenfuss, Austin Milbarge, J.P Valkenheiser, Vic Zeck, Yortuk Festrunk, Roman Craig, Sgt Tree, Grocer, Steven Mils, Louis Winthorpe III (Carl Featherbottom was very honored by Louis dressing as him that one time). Vic has the most beautiful eyes, he's the one with the hypnosis powers and the one who taught me.

Enemy: Vic Frohmyer. Not only is that Christmas obsessed jerk a control freak when it comes to Christmas but also he really wants to get his hands on that cursed screen-play that Eucalyptus has, mainly because he knows it's the secret to the 'Aykroyd-verse' so to speak but also because whoever reads it is turned into a Were-Aykroyd (of course he'd want that to make a Dark Were-Aykroyd army nonetheless), hence why it's my job to make sure it's safe in the hands of the right forces.

Tidbit: Despite being akin to werecreature lore, my kind borrows aspects from vampire movies and vampire lore too and also ghosts and demons. And the transformations aren't full moon trigger based either which is a common stereotype of werecreature transformation, true Nathan turns into me sometimes at night but he also transforms into me when it's dark in general, or sometimes when I feel like helping him. I aim to help him, I aim to be a hero and look up to crimefighters.

Favorite Hobby: I love to perform and sing, i've been told i've got quite the voice.

Favorite video game: Mortal Kombat X, Resident Evil: Village (If the cadou mold could be contained somehow and I could use it in combination with some of my Aykroydian DNA it would make me more effective), Dead by Daylight (I have a variant of myself who is a killer in that universe as does Nathan). While it would make sense for me to be a survivor due to my knowledge of horror tropes, I feel killer suits me more in that universe.

Jasmine: Do you have a movie or book you loved but will never watch/read again?

Tbh, I don’t think so? I love rewatching/rereading things I liked the first time around, because I always pick up on things I didn’t before, and I feel like I gain a better appreciation for it. Same with music – if I really like a certain album (or even if I didn’t, but I felt like there was something I was missing; I’ve done this multiple times with The Beatles’ White Album), I’ll listen again and try to pick out a song or something I hadn’t paid much attention to before, to see if I can get something new out of it.

I think maybe like. The closest thing I can think of is Adventure Time? I was one of those kids who wasn’t allowed to watch Cartoon Network etc (PBS gang babey), so while my friend, my partner, and I were living together last year, we went through and watched a bunch of shows that either they’d seen growing up, or been meaning to see. Adventure Time was one of them, and it was a great show, don’t get me wrong. I still rewatch certain episodes every now and then. But I can’t imagine doing a full chronological order, episode-by-episode rewatch, just because it’s so long, only plot-driven in certain parts, and has like. Roughly a season and a half that’s just kind of a drag. On the other hand, I’d definitely like to give Gravity Falls a rewatch, and don’t kill me that friend and I are rewatching Steven Universe, and tbh viewing it for a second time is a blast :]

Oh and as far as reading goes!! I have a couple books still on my to-read list, but when I’m done, I’m definitely planning on rereading Leslie Silko’s Ceremony. It’s a fantastic book, but I read it while I was in absolute hell mode finishing my final year of undergrad, so I wasn’t able to give it the time and appreciation I think it deserved. Would also like to reread Doctor Faustus and some Shakespeare plays (especially Twelfth Night) sometime soon :D

Cartoon Network Hotel Review

WHAT TIME IS IT????

If you don’t find yourself screaming this when you get here, even just in your head, then you’re in the wrong place.

But after a nice drive through Amish Country, the Cartoon Network Hotel is nice and visible right outside of Dutch Wonderland. Coming in, you see images of some of your favorite characters, right before Finn and Jake welcome you at the front.

Granted, it looks like I came off season- with fall and school just starting, Dutch Wonderland is only open on the weekends, and the hotel wasn’t exactly packed from what I can see. Which made for a good time for the indoor pool to be under renovation, so I sadly didn’t get to check that out. But hey, the outdoor pool was running just fine, although it was mostly empty, just myself and a family.

I didn’t take any pictures of the pool, since I didn’t have my phone (but a couple of Ice King’s penguins are playing life guard duty, alongside a pretty cute girl), but I did snap a photo of the Powerpuff sprinklers! They look pretty cool, right?

But that’s jumping ahead. Anyway, as mentioned, today it didn’t seem so busy, so despite arriving a couple of hours before 4 PM check-in, I was able to get a room right away. It must have been busy enough that I didn’t get the Gumball room I asked for, but instead I got my second choice, Steven Universe.

But I mean, look at this. I can’t complain. I was just thinking that I wanted the SU room instead, anyway.

The rooms are themed to one of six shows/franchises, the other four being Powerpuff Girls, Ben 10, Adventure Time and We Bare Bears. The former two seem to be primarily inspired by their recent series however, not their classics, so your mileage will vary there. I asked a receptionist which show tends to be the most popular choice, and she says that it rotates. Apparently PPG does get picked often by those who grew up with it, which makes sense, although those aren’t my Powerpuff Girls.

So, some things of note- there are four exclusive channels to the Hotel. Gumball and Teen Titans Go get their own 24/7 channels, which seems redundant since they’re basically all CN shows anyway. But they also have a FanFavs channel, which shows various episodes from various series, and New Shows, which I’m not sure if it shows currently unaired episodes or not. I couldn’t get that one active for long, but I did see part of a Victor & Valentino episode. I did have FanFavs on a bit as background noise, and they seem to mostly show:

It seems like they mostly rotate from those shows, but I’d like to believe there’s more. Griz is on the cover bar for it when you connect to wifi, and you’d think they’d also show at least the 2016 PPG show as well, as that’s all over the resort.

They also do showings of cartoons in the kitchen at 3 and 9 PM, as the kitchen is closed during those times. My flight was very early, so I missed the 9 showing, as well as the Summer Camp Island-inspired bonfire that happened before, but I caught the 3 o’clock cartoons. They played episodes of Craig of the Creek, Total Dramarama, Teen Titans Go, and Gumball. Pretty cool, although these are basically the only four shows the channel plays anyway, The intro they use for the screenings shows clips from classic Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, and Scooby-Doo cartoons, but none of those were shown today. Maybe they’ll throw one in at another time? Probably not Scooby... or maybe just a movie, since they apparently play movies as well sometimes.

I didn’t stick around for most of the TDR cartoon though, as I was participating in the Craig of the Creek scavenger hunt. They hunt various CN characters around the lobby vicinity, and you try to find them in the right spot.

This is what you get if you win- a COTC pin and a Hershey bar. But hey, you can’t argue with results, and this is about it for Craig merch.

The gift shop almost exclusively focuses on the six shows with featured rooms, and a lot of merch isn’t exclusive. I did get a couple of things though.

The beach towel is based on the designs you see all over the hotel and has a couple of series not otherwise represented in terms of merch, like OK KO, Summer Camp Island, and the aforementioned COTC. Oh, and Clarence! Almost missed him in the bottom.

I got the stickers because there are more COTC characters, and again, the designs are nice. The SU pin was cool, and if there was a similar one for AT or Gumball, I would have got that as well. And I got the Anais keychain because Gumball merch is strangely rare despite its popularity, especially for her. There were also some pencils, notebooks, a couple of T-shirts and a hoodie. I almost got some pencils.

There’s also an arcade and an activity center, but those do seem mostly for kids, plus you have to pay for most of the crafts. I think the coloring is free at least, and there are a couple of nods to classic shows I found that I’ll share on another post.

Just as there are some nods to classics around the place, primarily the elevator and kitchen, but the people who want to see Dexter and Johnny and the Eds aren’t the target audience for this resort. Which is unfortunate, but the thing is, besides the fact that we’re getting old and today’s kids need their own shows, Cartoon Network has become a big deal internationally over the past decade, moreso than during their supposed heyday in the late 90′s-early 00′s. The six shows featured aren’t just picked for being the most popular, they’re all big draws overseas. We Bare Bears sells a LOT of merch in Asia and parts of Europe, even if it doesn’t seem that big of a draw stateside. Hopefully they can make this a tourist spot.

That said, I do hope that they consistently update things in the years to come. Part of the problem with the Nickelodeon Hotel over in Orlando was how stuck it was in the mid-2000′s. Sure, SpongeBob has remained a big draw over the years since, but when I visited the place around 2010 (didn’t stay, but took a tour), it was apparent that if your kids weren’t big fans of Rugrats or Jimmy Neutron, and they probably weren’t around that place until its last days, there wasn’t much reason to stay over.

I do think that Craig deserves his own themed room, and it may be time to swap out Powerpuff for it. Let’s admit that the 2016 reboot was a failure and move on. Or maybe just double down and replace the reboot designs with their classic look.

But hey, my final thoughts on the Cartoon Network Hotel? I had a lot of fun, and got the best sleep I had in ages. I’m not sure if I’d go again, though. At least unless it changes things up a little. Part of the thing is that this is really for the kids who love today’s new shows. And I do really love three of the six shows heavily featured here- four if you count the original Powerpuff. But I’m just not the right age for this place.

If you love any of these shows and/or Cartoon Network’s brand as a whole, I recommend checking this place out, but only if you’re near the area. Don’t make it a pilgrimage. Unless you have enough friends to make grouping up on the Steven Universe Dream Suite worth it.

That said, look at these Bear macrons. So damn cute, and tasty, too!
