the second I’m done exams I’m starting a silly little modern au where the lannister kiddos are happy and (mostly) get along
This is due to much therapy, modern education regarding hey! Maybe don’t fuck your siblings! and Hey! People sadly die in childbirth, not the babies fault! so they’re dysfunctional but would die for each other and go to brunch to complain about tywin
think umbrella academy except without superpowers

ASOS; Steel and Snow: 12 TYRION II (pages 161-172)
Tyrion visits Varys to arrange a date with Shae, then sics Bronn on a bard.
-
The eunuch was humming tunelessly to himself as he came through the door, dressed in flowing robes of peach-colored silk and smelling of lemons.
lemon(s) = 🥛
also I have just had the best mental image of Modern Day AU Varys as a Drag Queen. Probably runs a club with all the best gossip.
"I am full of surprises. Are you cross with me for abandoning you after the battle?" "It made me think of you as one of my family."
Ha! that is both a sick burn, and also really sad.
... damn. Maegor: 3 x Grand Maesters by Axe Aegon II: 1 x Grand Maester by Dragon Digestion
That "maesters wrecked the Targaryens actually" theory sounding more and more likely. Look at all this extra motive.
Bronn had turned up all he could on Ser mandon, but no doubt Varys knew a great deal more... should he choose to share it. "The man seems to have been quite friendless," Tyrion said carefully. "Sadly," said Varys, "oh, sadly. You might find some kin if you turned over enough stones back in the Vale, but here... Lord Arryn brought him to King's Landing and Robert gave him his white cloak, but neither loved him much, I fear. (...) Ser Barristan was once heard to say he had no friend but his sword and no life but duty... but you know, I do not think Selmy meant it altogether as praise.-"
OOOHHHH!!!! I just had a conspiracy theory.
Cersei didn't hire Moore to kill Tyrion, Moore was taking a chance to kill who he believed was responsible for Jon Arryn's death after getting news from the Vale from on old friend who still lives there re: the very rigged Trial and Lysa's (very loud and false) claims. Moore was taking the first opportunity for vengeance that he thought he could get away with.
What do you think? Feasible? Too much crack?
One day, I am going to come up with a conspiracy theory that contains so much pure crack, the cops will break down the door for a drug bust.
But also, given how this series uses perceptions and assumptions, even if we're in some one's POV, we don't always get the full story, but it is the best way to be sure someone actually did something for realsies.
... You know, I'm actually kind of surprised they let Lollys keep the foetus (or are forcing her to keep the foetus) to term. You'd think, given how they treat bastards and such, that they'd remove 'such a stain' before it became a problem.
(Or at the very least they wouldn't force a young woman who's been violated to carry a baby she never asked for. But then again this series does not care very much for the female members of the cast. The kind ongoing of trauma and dysphoria that is probably giving her, whether it looks that way or not in her current mental state...)
"To guard the king's life, you surrender your own. You give up your lands and titles, give up hope of marriage, children..." "House Tyrell continues through my brothers," Ser Loras said. "It is not necessary, for a third son to wed, or breed." "Not necessary, but some find it pleasant. What of love?" "When the sun has set, no candle can replace it."
D&D suck at their job = 🥛
I'm sorry, but can we just take a moment and appreciate the depth of Loras' grief? Like, I have no trouble believing Book!Loras loved Renly for real. Truly, honestly loved him first and foremost before he saw him as a pawn to get at the throne.
Show!Loras and Renly? I forgot they even fucked.
Loras being gay in the show felt like a background joke. "LoL, Sansa has a crush on a gay boy," or "LOL, Cersei is getting married to the gay boy."
Even between Loras and Renly, in the show, the first time we really saw them together, Loras was talking Renly into vying for the crown and Robert wasn't even dead yet. It was manipulation and titillation. Were they in love or was Loras just using him? Who knows, but after Renly died no one really cared, and I forgot they fucked, forgot Loras was even gay until it was shoved back in my face like a poor tasting joke.
Book!verse though? I can believe those two were in love, I can believe Loras is grieving that loss so quietly because he can't say what he's lost, what he feels, he can't express the depth of it and he has to listen to everyone around him belittle that affection and connection, and oh my gosh that poor boy.
A woman sidled into the light; plump, soft, matronly, with a round pink moon of a face and heavy dark curls. Tyrion recoiled. "Is something amiss?" she asked. Varys, he realized with annoyance.
Drag Queen!Varys is canon. Pry it from my cold dead hands. Just cross-dressing, I know, shhhh, let me have this.
"He's gone," Shae said. Tyrion turned to look. It was true. the eunuch had vanished, shirts and all. The hidden doors are here somewhere, they have to be.
You wanna bet they're under the giant stone slab of a bed? You know, that thing that our attention was directed to the last time he was talking about hidden doors?
(also, it made me think of that scene from the animated Secret Garden, with the secret door under the window seat when they were talking about it earlier, but it probably slides like that giant coffin door from... oh gish, what's the movie... it's going to come to me right as I'm drifting off to sleep. It's like an entire trope to be fair, "giant stone altar/coffin is actually a sliding door" so I'm probably thinking of several movies.)
Her cunt gave him a little squeeze, and he started to stiffen again inside her.
'cunt' = 🥛
... you know, the longer Shae talks about Lollys, the more I prefer Show!Shae to Book!Shae, just for the fact that the show version has some level of empathy for other people. I understand it's probably a coping mechanism for some kind of hidden backstory trauma (no one in this series is without), but damn the way book!Shae treats sexual assault is icky AF.
Then he made a round of the walls, tapping on each in turn, searching for the hidden door. Shae sat with her legs drawn up and her arms wrapped around them, watching him. Finally she said, "They're under the bed. the secret steps." He looked at her, incredulous. "The bed? the bed is solid ston. It weighs half a ton." "There's a place where Varys pushes, and it floats right up. I asked him how, and he said it was magic." "Yes." Tyrion had to grin. "A counterweight spell."
Ha-ha! I was right... about the location. Not the door type, though. The magic in this series is so low key or background I tend to forget it's a thing.
This does explain how he got out of the room without being heard. half-ton stones are not quietly moved, even if they have mechanisms to help them.
!! Alayaya made it back to her mother's brothel! Phew, I was low key worried something had happened to her on the walk back. you know, after she was whipped and kicked out the Keep naked?
"There is a singer who calls himself Symon Silver Tongue," Tyrion said wearily, pushing his guilt aside. "He plays for Lady Tanda's daughter sometimes. "What of him?" Kill him, he might had said, but damn the man had done nothing but sing a few songs.
You'd think Bards would do better in life, what with being a Charisma class, but no, no one likes Bards here.
And fill Shae's head with thoughts of doves and dancing bears.
... well now I have "Once Upon a December" from Anastasia (1997) stuck in my head.
Dancing Bears Painted Wings Things I almost remember. And a song someone sings Once upon a December.

Armor - Oberyn Martell x Reader x Ellaria Sand - Part 4
Tumblr media
Author’s Note: Sorry I’m getting this out so late, but It’s time for our girl Ellaria! I love her so much, but I don’t feel super confident with writing her. It might take me a while to find her voice, be patient with me guys lol. Anyways, hope you enjoy and as always, feedback is welcome!
Word Count: 4.0k
Warnings: crude language, mentions of sex
At this point, you weren’t even shooting to challenge or better yourself. You hit every target without fail, you weren’t even paying attention as you did so. Shooting helped you think, allowing you time to process your thoughts, you had a hard time doing so while being still. Well...sometimes it was hard sitting still in general.
“I always feel sorry for the unfortunate man that crosses one of your arrows.” Tyrion’s voice rang from behind you. You turned and gave a small smile before walking away a bit to retrieve said arrows.
“I’m surprised no one here has crossed them yet.” You joked, forcefully taking out the arrows from their targets and gathering them into your sling. “Was there something you needed?”
“Yes.” He replied, but still seemed hesitant to tell you.
“Tyrion?” You asked warily.
“You’re not going to like it. Oberyn is here again, but this time he brings his paramour, the Sand woman. But she insists on leaving the prince and I to our devices. However...Oberyn does not feel comfortable having her roam the palace alone. He asked if you might be able to accompany her?”
Bull fucking shit.
You were not stupid. Ellaria seemed like a capable woman who could more than defend herself. No, this was too deliberate, too planned. Ellaria wanted to get you alone. How convenient that she didn’t want to step on Oberyn and Tyrion’s toes when she was nearly attached to Oberyn at the hip the last time you saw the two of them together.
“I was paid to guard you, not the prince’s paramour.” You grumbled, but truthfully? After your talk with Oberyn, you were curious about the captivating Ellaria Sand. Equally as beautiful as her lover, and equally as passionate. If anything, you may be able to learn a bit more information about the guests from Dorne, and even more so, how to convince the prince not to kill the Lannisters.
“Fine. But next time Bronn gets babysitting duty.” You huffed. If you made it easy for Tyrion he might get suspicious.
It wasn’t as if you thought the prince’s lover was incredibly beautiful.
No, he wouldn’t guess that.
Right?
“They both asked for you specifically, but I will try to convince them next time.” Tyrion said, almost as a joke. “Tell me, why are they so taken with you? First Oberyn visits the palace only to converse with you, next Ellaria asks for you to keep her company.” Tyrion eyed you suspiciously. He was far too clever for his own good, and while it amused you most of the time, it was also extremely annoying.
“Now, are you going to tell me what really happened in that brothel?”
You punched Tyrion hard in the arm.
“Ow!!! You just punched me!! How dare you!! I ought to arrest you for treason!” Tyrion whined dramatically, but none of his words scared you.
“I didn’t sleep with either of them if that’s what you’re implying, you fucking bastard.” You spat. Tyrion often teased you, but this was a new low for him. “What I told you was true, I did as I was told.”
Tyrion was still holding his arm and wincing as he processed your words. “Oh come now, you must have done something for them to like you so much. Even I didn’t like you the first time I met you.” He teased.
“Fuck off.” You grumbled, holding back your urge to shove him. You knew Tyrion and you knew he would find out one way or another. And if he and Oberyn were going to meet today, Tyrion was sure to ask him about it. You’d rather tell him yourself than have him hear it from Oberyn. Only the gods knew what sort of version he’d give. “I gave them the girls, but they just weren’t as interested in them. They were...They were interested in me.” You tried to say as nonchalantly as you could, trying to keep your voice steady.
To say Tyrion was shocked was an understatement. “Really?” He asked, clearly amused.
This was not going to go well for you.
“And what did you say to that? A handsome prince and his beautiful woman want to fuck you, and you just said no?”
You punched him in the arm again, causing him to wince once more. “You she-devil! Will you please stop hitting me, you vile, terrifyingly strong woman!”
“Stop making jokes about this!! This is serious Tyrion!! They insulted me. I am a skilled assassin, known throughout Westeros and all they wanted to do was fuck me, thought I was another girl for purchase. And to make matters worse, I don’t think their feelings have changed on the matter.” You huffed, plopping down into the grass. You knew you would have to get back up soon, both of you couldn’t leave the Dornish waiting, but you wanted nothing more than to lie there forever and forget your troubles.
Tyrion softened and pulled you up into a sitting position to look at him as he sat across from you. “Is that why Oberyn visited you yesterday?”
You sighed but nodded. “We...have a better understanding now. They know why I was angry and they are smart enough to not press it any further, but they don’t hide their desire. I’m watching both him and Ellaria. I still don’t trust them. I think they want to use me to get to you and the rest of your family. It won’t work.” You promised confidently. Even Oberyn’s pretty words could not break you, and you planned on keeping it that way.
Tyrion looked sad and you could not, for the life of you, understand why. Surely keeping your guard was a good thing? Surely the fact that you were starting to get a hold of this little game was something he should be proud of. So why did he look so remorseful?
“We better get going. Don’t want Oberyn stabbing another Lannister while he waits for us.” Tyrion joked half-heartedly.
You eyed him suspiciously. He knew that you knew something was up with him, but he wasn’t going to relent. You decided to drop it. After all, you were keeping royalty waiting.
But before you could re-enter the palace, Tyrion grabbed your wrist. Your head snapped back to him at the sudden gesture. “Don’t let them in too much, but don’t dismiss them as an ally. They may be useful to us...and you need friends.”
This sort of sentiment didn’t suit either of you, but especially not Tyrion. You were confused by his words. “I have friends. I have Bronn, and Shae, and-“
“That’s different.” Tyrion cut off. “I hired you and we all became friends in the process. These people may want to befriend you just because they like you. I’m not telling you to bare your heart to them, I’m telling you to be open-minded.” He clarified. You weren’t used to seeing Tyrion so...serious, at least in this regard. He let go of your wrist and composed himself as if nothing happened.
You didn’t really know what to say to all of that, so you did the same and followed behind Tyrion into the palace.
“Prince Oberyn, Lady Ellaria, welcome to King’s Landing.” Tyrion smiled softly before giving a small bow.
The Dornish returned the favor. Both of them were once again adorned in the colors of their homeland. Warm tones of yellows, golds, and oranges draping loosely against their toned frames.
But when their heads came up from the small bow, both pairs of eyes settled on you.
“It is good to see you again, little hawk.” Ellaria cooed.
If her voice wasn’t so soft you might have been angry. You were not little.
“The pleasure is all mine, my lady.” You replied with ease, keeping your cool.
“As much as I would love to enjoy your company once more, I’m afraid Lord Tyrion and I have business to discuss.” Oberyn said sadly, but gave you a small smile anyways.
“Keep Lady Ellaria company. Shouldn’t be long.” Tyrion instructed, but his eyes still bore into yours. Remember what I said.
“Give me a tour?” Ellaria brought you back to the present, her mischievous eyes dancing over you. You had a feeling this was not just going to be a tour.
“Of course, Lady Ellaria.”
The Dornish woman cackled with laughter, as if to prove a point. “I am no lady. Ellaria is fine. I am not wed to Oberyn, therefore I have no royal status”
You quirked an eyebrow at her response. “Not married? But you two are so...close.” And the fact that they stayed together when they both preferred having several lovers was certainly saying something as well.
“We are wed in everything except name.” Ellaria explained. Oddly enough, it made sense. Dedicated to each other, but also able to seek pleasure with others. They could be attracted to several people, but love was another matter entirely. It went deeper than just fucking around. They were each other’s person.
You tried not to think about how easily you understood that.
“Oberyn is the love of my life. I love him, and he loves me, completely. There are no barriers with us. We take what gives us pleasure as long as it benefits both of us.” Ellaria smiled to herself. It was easy to see how much she loved him and vice versa.
What an incredible thing to know someone so completely.
“However,” she began, “Life in our homeland calls to us. Oberyn and I wish to see more of our children. We have seen enough of Westeros to last us a lifetime. We want to...settle down, to only leave Dorne on matters of business.” Ellaria explained. It seemed hard to imagine the two living a domestic life. They were so bold and free, and they possessed the power to go anywhere, do anything.
But you remembered your talk with Oberyn and about his eight daughters. So much was uncertain about the prince, but his love for his family was unquestionable. He was willing to kill Tywin Lannister, the most powerful man in all of Westeros because he believed him to be involved with his sister's murder. No one could fake that level of love and dedication. If you loved someone that much, you imagined you’d stay in one place for them too.
“Oberyn and I still love each other, very much, but we sometimes wonder if there is one another person who may join us. Someone more constant. Oberyn and I have been with each other for so long. To know someone else as well as we know each other could make things interesting.”
You really didn’t like that she was staring at you so intently.
Or maybe you did, and that was the problem.
“There are many people who I’m sure would be honored to receive the affections of Dornish royalty.” You replied easily, trying to draw the attention away from you.
“Not so many as we might have thought.” Ellaria teased before linking her arm with yours. How she had managed to do that so easily was beyond you. You looked around and were relieved to see that no one was around, but you were still on guard. Spies were everywhere in this palace. But when you thought about it, there was no way the queen could use this against you. She may tease you about it, sure, but she could not hurt Ellaria and start a war just because she didn’t like you.
So while you hated feeling your heart in your chest...this was safe.
“Don’t look so frightened.” Ellaria chided. “You are simply escorting me, yes?”
You eyed her disbelievingly. That was not all that was going on here, and you couldn't help but notice her choice of words. “I think we have different ideas on what makes a person an escort.”
Ellaria hummed and smirked. “Very different ideas.” She flirted.
You narrowed your eyes in warning and she got the hint...sort of. “I like a person in armor. Oberyn has dashing leather brown armor, but I very seldom see women with such attire, a shame really. It’s flattering in a different sort of way.”
You rolled your eyes. “My armor is not for appearances. It keeps me safe.”
“Safe and beautiful can coexist.” She smirked. “I know it was not your intention for the armor to be beautiful, but it is.” Ellaria used her other hand to trace the ornate design. There wasn’t much additional detail, just your crest, an arrow intertwined with a feather on your shoulder pieces. It was subtle enough for someone to notice at such close proximity, but otherwise, the crest was for you and no one else. You didn’t need people to know your crest, you kept it as a reminder of who you were.
“Your armor is a piece of you. I don’t pretend to understand what it is to be you, but I do understand what it is to be a woman. Not many women can say they are feared warriors or assassins, you’ve earned the stories they say about you, you’ve earned your reputation. You have every reason to wear it with pride.” Ellaria smiled at you before...seven hells was she cuddling into your arm????
You were glad Tyrion and Bronn were nowhere in sight.
But as quickly as she did it, she resumed her previous position, simply perched on your arm, as if nothing had happened.
“And it suits you because it does not hide your pretty face.”
You were sure the compliment was only meant to make you more flustered. “If you wish to catch me off guard, Ellaria, you will have to try much harder than that.” You snipped.
The striking woman chuckled and her laugh, her true laugh, was the sweetest noise in all the realms. Joy and life were in that laugh. Warmth. That was the feeling. You almost didn’t recognize it. It had been so long since you had felt anything close to it. It settled in your chest and forced you just...feel.
And you couldn’t run away from it, not with her arm locked around yours. You wondered if that had been her game all along.
“Do not tempt me, Silver Hawk. You forget that I stood before you in a brothel. I could very easily arrange for you to meet us there again.”
“No.” You replied before you could even stop yourself. Your mind reeled, trying to recover, to say anything that could give you at least some of your dignity back. “I only go where Tyrion tells me to. Otherwise, I am at his side or within reach.”
“And what if I ask Tyrion to just...have you visit a while?” She teased.
You rolled your eyes.
“Then I will acquiesce, but that doesn’t mean I have to do what you tell me.”
“Hmmm...We’ll just have to convince you then.”
You snorted. “It would be amusing to see you both try. I am paid to assist Tyrion, but even then some of his demands do not go without question. If I truly didn’t want to do something he asked of me there is not a man alive who could make me do it.”
Ellaria’s eyes darkened as she looked at you.
You didn’t know it, but she could have taken you right there on the palace floor.
“You are a fearsome thing to behold, do you know that?” Ellaria laughed. “Believe me when I say I would not do anything to push you away, not when I am enjoying your company so much. I believe my prince spoke to you of friendship, yes?”
“He did indeed.”
“That is what we both want. But at least let me compliment you. A pretty face as yours deserves at least that.” Ellaria grinned.
You sighed, but her deep brown eyes were impossible to deny.
“Only when we’re alone. I don’t need Tyrion or Bronn giving me any trouble over it.” You grumbled.
“Deal.” Ellaria agreed.
“Ellaria.” A familiar voice called from behind you. On instinct you pulled away from her, even though you were sure the Dornish prince did not mind. What you were worried about was the hand of the king that trailed behind him. You hoped he hadn’t seen you with Ellaria draped all over you.
“My prince.” Ellaria greeted, returning to her favorite place, at her lover’s side. “She is nice company when she’s not so defensive.”
“You should see her when she’s drunk.” Tyrion chipped in. “That’s the only time she seems to like me.”
Somehow you managed to glare at both of them.
“Oh stop now, just a bit of fun. The prince and I were actually just speaking fondly of you.” Tyrion had that familiar, mischievous glint in his eye that made your heart palpitate faster in your chest.
“Oh really?” You were not amused. Now the prince was the object of your glares. What did he tell Tyrion? Did he betray you? Tyrion knew the prince and his lover were enamored with you, but Oberyn didn’t know that Tyrion knew. Not to mention you told Tyrion nothing about your little threats you gave upon meeting them both. If he told Tyrion, you would never hear the end of it, and you would be even more on guard around the prince than you usually were.
“We were discussing the idea of a tournament.” Tyrion proposed. “The king is fond of...violent delights and your skill with a bow would most certainly amuse him. I made a bet against the prince here that you would beat any challenger.”
“I intend on losing.” Oberyn laughed. “That is why I did not bet a lot.”
“Still,” Tyrion smirked, “I would very much like to be in possession of more money that I have to do nothing for, so I was wondering if you could help me.”
How Tyrion thought he would be able to convince you so easily and propose this idea for his own benefit was beyond you.
“And what do I get from this?” You weren't one for showing off your skill. There was some sort of advantage to people underestimating you, you could always take them by surprise. But by now your reputation probably ruined any chance of surprising anyone. Not to mention you could change your mind if money or something of value were involved.
“The adoration of the king, the hand of the king, and the high society of Westeros.”
You snorted. “Forget it.”
“Fine! You can have the winnings too.” Tyrion huffed. “You rob me of my own winnings from my own bet. You wound me, my dear.”
“You’ll get over it.”
Both Oberyn and Ellaria laughed.
“Do you two always act like this?” Ellaria asked.
“Unfortunately her skill comes with a mouth and an attitude. She sometimes succeeds in making me question if that is worth the protection she provides.”
“If my protection wasn’t worth it, I would still be in the North right now.”
“Hmmm...yes sometimes I wish you still were.”
You gave Tyrion a playful nudge. “Don’t listen to him. He’d miss me.”
“I can tell.” Oberyn grinned. For a second you forgot all about keeping your guard up around the Dornish visitors. Tyrion always brought that out of you, the real, unguarded version of you. You supposed you could allow yourself some fun, just this once.
“This is so exciting! I’ve been dying to see the Silver Hawk in action.” Ellaria grinned something mischievous. In any other circumstance, it might have made you nervous, but the chance to actually get some shooting in was actually exciting.
Definitely didn’t have anything to do with showing off in front of Oberyn and Ellaria.
Definitely not.
“I hope to live up to your expectations, Ellaria.” You smiled, just a little.
“I’m sure you will exceed them.” She winked
Tyrion glanced between you and the Dornish. “It seems like she already has.”
If looks could kill, Tyrion would have dropped dead under the heat of your glare.
“She has been more than obligating in making us feel welcome here.” Your eyes widened at Oberyn, but you quickly concealed your shock. He hadn’t told Tyrion about your threats and less than warm welcome. But why? Why would he lose the opportunity to get back at you for insulting a prince, a prince who was an honored guest nonetheless? “You have a very loyal friend at your side, Lord Tyrion. You’re very lucky to have such friendship.”
Neither you nor Tyrion knew what to say to that. At least for a moment. Tyrion eventually had a response to everything.
“I choose my friends and allies well.”
No one could deny the double meaning in that. It was an offer to them more than it was a compliment to you.
“You do indeed.” Oberyn agreed.
Two more pieces to Tyrion’s game.
“You both are welcome to peruse the palace as you please, though I’m afraid I must steal away our Hawk. Please make yourselves welcome and do not hesitate to bother any of the servants should you need something.” Tyrion offered respectfully, ever the host to his new allies.
“Your hospitality is most appreciated, Lord Tyrion.” Both men have a small, respectful bow.
“We hope to see you soon.” Oberyn once again kissed your knuckles softly.
Tyrion had to do everything not to chuckle. That didn’t stop a stupid grin from forming on his face.
When the couple was out of earshot, you pointed a finger at Tyrion. “If I hear a single word about any of that I will be using you as target practice for the tournament.” You huffed.
Tyrion smirked. "Come now, my dear, having two incredibly attractive people want you like cats in heat is nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about."
You huffed and stormed away. If Tyrion actually did need you, you would punish him by making him wait until tomorrow for whatever it was.
Curse them. Curse them with their stupid charm, their incessant flirtations, their dumb, pretty faces, their kind words, their alluring charisma...
What the hell were they doing to you?
————————— Cersei waited patiently in her room. She had neglected a few royal duties all for this. Her nails tapped on the table, then quickly stopped when she heard the door to her chamber open.
“Well?” She asked sharply.
The blond-haired boy failed to control his nerves under the queen regent’s gaze. “The Silver Hawk has captured the interest of Prince Oberyn and his paramour Ellaria Sand. The assassin has not outwardly verbalized her affection towards the Dornish, but she was seen in the courtyard on Lady Ellaria’s arm.”
Cersei took a moment to consider this. You never showed any outward affection towards anyone except her brother, and she couldn’t do anything about that, not while her brother was being protected under Tywin. But she could do something to you. You were only under the protection of Tyrion, which meant very little to her. Her father she had to obey, her brother she did not.
“Keep track of her. They don’t call her the Silver Hawk for nothing. She has a sharp eye, make sure you stay out of sight while you spy on her. If she finds you, you run. If I find out she spotted you, you will be executed. Do I make myself clear?” Cersei asked, having no concern for the man who was her own blood, her cousin.
“Y-yes, my lady.” The boy gulped before taking his cue to leave.
The queen stirred about in her chamber, her thoughts were only composed of how best to take revenge on you.

You know with how often people bring up Sansa going to Cersei as some ultimate betrayal of the Starks, you’d think they’d remember that Ned went to Cersei too. And it wouldn’t matter if Sansa told Cersei they were leaving because she wouldn’t have known anything about Ned discovering the incest without him literally telling her what he knew and giving her time to hatch her own plan. It’s Ned’s mercy that dooms him and it’s much more narratively satisfying than it would be if it was all Sansa’s fault than if Ned has literally no influence over his own story. Ned also puts his own men into the city watch, leaving his personal guard very small. Ned has much more influence than his 11 year old daughter.
Oh, and when Ned first tells Sansa and Arya that they’ll leaving KL, Sansa says this, “I’ll be good, you’ll see, just let me stay and I promise to be as fine and noble and courteous as the queen.” Ned literally knows that Sansa idolizes the queen and says literally not one word to her about Cersei not being trustworthy. Sansa is an 11 year old girl who’s upset about leaving a place she liked with tons of things she’d always dreamed of, so she goes to someone she thinks will let her stay. Ned never once warns her against Cersei the way her warns Arya even though he knows that she thinks the queen is perfect.
Once she had loved Prince Joffrey with all her heart, and admired and trusted his mother, the queen. They had repaid that love and trust with her father's head.
Sansa didn’t go to Cersei out of some devious need to betray her father or to see him hurt.  It was an act of rebellion - an 11-year-old child seeking the help of a trusted authority figure because she doesn’t understand what her father is doing - because as it’s been pointed out,  Ned failed to properly communicate with Sansa just truly how dangerous their situation was.   I’ve seen people argue that he did when he told Sansa that he wanted her and Arya back for their safety-  but looking back at the chapter (Sansa III) he says nothing to Sansa about his mistrust of Cersei Lannister, thus the explanation he gives is in fact INSUFFICIENT.  And I’m sure someone will counter this by saying “well, he was her parent. She should have just obeyed, explanation or no.”  And I’m sorry, but I don’t agree, and it’s because of this -
Sansa must wed Joffrey, that is clear now, we must give them no grounds to suspect our devotion.
Sansa had every right to a proper explanation given that her father betrothed her to Joffrey with the intention of using it as a cover to investigate the Lannisters for murder.  If Arya who wasn’t in the position that Sansa was as the betrothed to the future king deserved honesty, then so did Sansa.    Also, because as it’s been raised before as to why Sansa continued to trust Cersei after the Trident- it’s been pointed out before that despite everything that happened, nothing happened to Sansa and Joff’s betrothal.  From Sansa’s perspective, she was still excepted to marry into this family.  Consequentially, it is no wonder she ended up romanticising the Lannisters again, rather than face the horrible truth about who they really are.  It’s why she insists Joff is nothing like his father, that “old drunken king” even though there are several parallels between Joffrey’s behaviour at the Trident and Robert’s at the tourney feast.  Such actions don’t paint her as stupid. They reveal her as human - after all, how many of us have lied to ourselves?  Sansa isn’t alone in this.  Ned lies to himself about Robert- taking a while to truly accept that his friend has changed. Tyrion lies to himself about Shae. Both were also much older than Sansa, who was a child.
Furthermore, if Sansa going to Cersei was truly so instrumental in Ned dying then you would think the show’s decision to cut it out would have some sort of effect.  Except it doesn’t really.  Ned still goes to Cersei (who is already planning her own shit) Littlefinger still betrays Ned, Janos Slynt also betrays Ned, Ned still sends much of his guard away causing him to be more vulnerable.  It’s almost like Sansa going to Cersei had little to no impact at all, other than her becoming captive and Arya going on the run. If you want to blame her for the death of the Stark household then fine as it was just meant to be them and the girls going home,  but again I can go back to Ned and ask why the hell didn’t he appoint guards for his daughters, given how dangerous he thought KL was, to prevent such a situation.  Because if your daughter is telling you how much she admires the queen (the woman you distrust) then that may be a clue you need to keep an eye on her.  Also regarding Ned- he was actually planning on staying in Kingslanding.  He wanted the girls back in WF, but he said nothing about himself. So hypothetically let's just say the girls did get sent away, certain factors will still exist.  Robert will still die, Littlefinger will see betray him, Renly a possible ally, will still be gone.  Joffrey will still go mad at Ned declaring him a bastard, and Cersei will still arrest him for treason.  In the books, Ned falsely confesses to treason in order to protect Sansa (paralleling his decision to lying about Jons parentage in order to protect him)  However even without Sansa’s life being in jeopardy, the outcome IMO would still have been the same.  One,  Varys obviously has his own agenda and I could very easily see him persuade Ned to confess in order to prevent his son Robb from going to war-
"Robb is only a boy," Ned said, aghast.
If Ned falsely confesses to treason in order to protect Sansa who is “no more than a child”, then it is very easy to see him do the same for Robb to protect him from having to go to war, that he saw only as “a boy”.  I always found that interesting he would say that, given that this is the same man who tells his wife their three year old son “won’t be three forever”.  And yet here faced with the prospect of his other son going to war, Ned is horrified.  It’s probably all coming back to him - how he also went to war  for the first time when he was not much older than Robb. Neds chapters showcase the trauma that he suffered because of it, which furthers my belief that he would try to prevent Robb from experiencing that.   Thus Ned still “confesses”, and he still dies.  Because nothing has been done to remove the fact that Joffrey is wildly unpredictable that doesn’t listen to his counsellors (theres a reason why Tommen is regarded as more controllable) or the fact that it has been strongly implied that LF might have had some influence on Joffrey suddenly changing script-
His queen mother stood beside him in a black mourning gown slashed with crimson, a veil of black diamonds in her hair. Arya recognized the Hound, wearing a snowy white cloak over his dark grey armor, with four of the Kingsguard around him. She saw Varys the eunuch gliding among the lords in soft slippers and a patterned damask robe, and she thought the short man with the silvery cape and pointed beard might be the one who had once fought a duel for Mother.
The High Septon clutched at the king's cape, and Varys came rushing over waving his arms, and even the queen was saying something to him, but Joffrey shook his head.
You know whose behaviour isn’t described here? Littlefinger’s.  There is no description of LF acting shocked or panicked.  That’s very telling.
tldr: sansa is not to blame for her father’s death. it was various other factors that ultimately ended up dooming him. sansa went to cersei not because she wanted to “betray” her father, but because she trusted cersei. it was a horrible situation in which a child’s trust was taken advantage of in the most wretched way, and its time the fandom stop blaming sansa for it.

Wedding Interruptious
Tumblr media
A/N: Hey I am so sorry it took me this long. I lost the request and then when you sent it in again I had just lost my dog and things were a mess. I’m doing better and have been writing on my book, but I really wanted to get this out for you. I hope that you like it. @hellonheels-x
Pairing: Tyrion x fem!reader
Word Count: 1106
Warnings: smut, p in the v, unprotected sex (wrap it before you tap it)
Sansa looked toward the front of the Sept sadly. She saw Tyrion standing there and sighed. This wasn’t what she wanted. She had thought she was going to marry Loras. That was who she wanted. Not someone that was related to those that killed her family. Though she knew Tyrion wasn’t like them. It didn’t make her feel any better. She held back her tears and kept her head high. Right as she reached her soon to be husband the back doors swung open loudly.
You stormed in, glaring at Tywin along with Joffrey. You hated them both with a passion. They had destroyed your family. Your twin, Robb, was lost to you. Though you looked nothing like him at all, you had the Stark sense of honor and your father’s stubbornness. “This wedding is not happening! My little sister is not marrying Tyrion.” You wouldn’t let her go through that. You knew this wasn’t what Sansa wanted. However, you had another motive for stopping the wedding.
Tyrion looked at you in confusion. The two of you had gotten on well from the moment you met. He even found you to be beautiful, but your families didn’t get along. So he had moved on. He had found Shae, but now he was being forced by his father to marry your sister. It wasn’t right. She was a child. He wanted someone older, someone that knew what they wanted. He had one night with you in Winterfell before he thought you were lost to him. Now he was thinking you might have a second chance.
Tywin raised a brow. “Oh? You believe you can stop this from happening? You have no say. Your family was traitors and they lost. We now have control over your sister and what happens.”
Joffrey snorted. “Wait grandfather. Perhaps she’s wanting to marry him. Oh this will be even better. Yes! I have decided that she shall marry him instead.”
You acted mortified by the thought, not wanting Joffrey or Tywin to know how much you actually wanted that. “What? You...you’re serious?” You prayed to the old gods he was. You had wanted to be with Tyrion since you met him at Winterfell; even against your father’s wishes.
Joffrey nodded. “I’m very serious. Get up here. Sansa put the cloak you’re wearing on your big sister. Go on do it.”
You walked up and helped your sister remove the cloak and put it on yourself. You could see Sansa felt sorry for you, but was also relieved.
After the ceremony was to be the wedding feast. You sat beside Tyrion, enjoying a glass of wine. You placed your hand on his knee under the table and squeezed gently. “I hope you know this is what I wanted,” you whispered.
Tyrion looked up at you, smiling softly. “To marry me or save your sister from a monster?”
“Stop that! You are not a monster. I’ve never seen you as one and I never will either. Yes, I wanted to save Sansa. Not because you’re a monster, but because she is still a child. I meant marrying you though. I’ve wanted to since that night in Winterfell.”
“My dear wife.” Tyrion placed his hand on top of yours. “I would have married you then if I thought I could. I know your father would have had my head for even asking. He would have taken it had he known I laid with you, but I digress. I’m glad that this is also what you wanted.”
You waited until the two of you were alone in your chambers to show him how much you truly wanted this. You kissed him softly yet passionately, pouring all your love for him into the kiss. “You’re mine now and I’m not letting you go.”
“Nor will I ever let you go.” He pulled you back down for another kiss, walking back toward the bed. He was eager to relive that night in Winterfell all those moons ago.
You walked with him and followed him onto the bed. “Both of us are wearing too many clothes.” You grinned. You tugged at the strings on his doublet, making it come loose. A small smirk graced your lips as his chest hair came into view. “That’s already a bit better, but…” You sat back and helped him up so you could take his shirt off. You purred when his upper body was revealed. “Much better.”
Tyrion chuckled softly. “It is, but you’re still wearing too much.” He helped you out of your clothing before removing his boots and trousers. “I believe this is much better than moments before. Don’t you?” He teasingly circled your areola with his finger.
A small mewl left you at the teasing and you nodded. “I do. Much better.” You kissed him, letting your tongue explore his mouth. He tasted of the wine you’d both been drinking and it fueled your desire for him. Without anymore hesitation you mounted him and slowly rocked your hips. He felt so good filling you up and stretching you. “I haven’t felt this good since that night. I’ve pleasured myself to the thought of you, but it was never enough. This is what I needed.”
His hands came to rest upon your hips. He helped guide you back and forth, up and down on his thick cock. “Fuck. I’ve been with others since then. I won’t lie. They don’t compare to you though. I love how tight and warm you are. This fucking pussy is mine and I want to stay buried in it.” He placed his thumb on your clit as he spoke, beginning to make small circles on the sensitive bundle.
You gasped and shuddered. You placed your hands beside his head and bent down to kiss him. “It’s yours. I’m yours. This feels so fucking good.” You picked up your pace. You had missed him and how good he made you feel. This time would be fast and quick, giving you both what you needed. There would be time for slow love making later.
Tyrion bucked his hips in time with your rocking, driving him further inside. He drug across that sweet spot inside while he kept teasing your little bud. “Shit!” You screamed in bliss as you clenched his cock. You were milking him for all he was worth as you gushed on him, soaking both of you and the bedding. You laid over him and panted softly.
“Holy fuck. You...love I’ve never felt anything that amazing before. We won’t be leaving this room for some time.”
You smiled blissfully. “I’m perfectly okay with that.”

Born To Be Yours | Part VII

Pt.1 Pt.2 Pt.3 Pt.4 Pt.5 Pt.6 Pt.8 Pt.9

It was a lovely day. And you chose to spend it with your best friend. At least you can keep each other company without anyone disturbing you.
“Let’s have a walk in the gardens.” You invited Sansa after knocking her door. She opened it revealing her divine hair done in a southerner style.
“Why such a beautiful princess would want to waste her time with someone like me? I mean... of course I’ll go-“ she bit her lip and flushed. You giggled.
“Not a waste at all.” She shyly smiled.
“This flower... is gorgeous!” It doesn’t compare to your beauty. “I’ve never seen one like it. They don’t grow in the North.”
“Yes, they are rare yet special. They are called The Middlemist Red. Actually, there’s only two of these left in the world, as far as I know. The other one is on Highgarden.” You commented gazing at her.
“You also have vast knowledge in botany.”
“I am familiar with the topic. I have friends who live there. They taught me.”
“Ser Loras?”
“Indeed. He is one of my best. Now he’s with my uncle Renly, they have always been closer, I can’t blame him. His sister is married to him.”
“Do you want to marry a handsome lord?”
“Sure. Just not now. Or anytime soon. First I want to travel. Meet people. Have adventures. So when I’m old and grey I have a lot of memories.”
“Arya wanted that too. Robb and you would have made a good match.” Sansa’s stomach twisted at her own words. She didn’t know why.
“He was a gentleman. I respect him and I understand his position. He wants justice. I know the last thing you desire in the world is to marry my brother.”
“I was so stupid... a stupid girl with a stupid dream of marrying a handsome prince.
He turned out to be my worst nightmare.”
“Hey hey, you are not stupid. Every girl would dream that. The circumstances didn’t play in your favor. But daylight will always come. It’s not your fault. Nothing’s gonna hold you down for long.” You sympathetically reassured.
“Thank you, Y/N. You are so good with words.” You resumed your steps and continued talking about the flowers.
“I want to introduce you to someone. Dear Y/N. This is Shae.” Tyrion said. The young woman clumsy bowed.
“It’s a pleasure, Princess Y/N. Your uncle always speaks about you.” Her accent sounded foreign.
“Nice to meet you, Shae.”
“I was planning to make her your new handmaid but since you don’t really need handmaidens I’ll be giving her to your beloved friend Sansa Stark.”
“I’m sure she’ll be pleased with your service, my lady.” Shae left. “Are you in love with her?” You playfully inquired once you were alone.
“Shae is special.” He looked quite smitten to her, the way he looked at her gave him away.
“If she makes you happy then I’m happy for you, uncle.”
“I intend to keep her safe. If your mother, my father, or someone finds out it’ll be a mess. Just Varys knows and now you.”
“I won’t breathe a word.” You crossed your heart. And you would never betray his confidence, he was the one to comfort you when your mother and Joffrey were unkind.
What a consideration of Cersei to host a dinner for your two younger siblings, the northern girl and you. You tried to keep a good face so your mother wouldn’t be scolding you for her own falseness. You seated next to Sansa. Myrcella and Tommen in front of you and Cersei at the top of the table. The room was awkward and quiet.
“When will Joffrey and Sansa be married?” Myrcella suddenly asked.
“Soon, darling, when the war is over.” Cersei answered.
“Mother says I’ll have a new gown for the ceremony and another for the feast. But yours will be ivory since you are the bride.” She joyfully announced but the tall girl didn’t reply back.
“The Princess just spoke to you.” The lioness peered at Myr and then at Sansa.
“Pardon, your grace. I’m sure your dress will be beautiful, Myrcella. I’m counting the days until the fight is done and I can pledge my love to the King in the sight of the gods.” She staged a very pitiful smile.
“Is Joffrey going to kill Sansa’s brother?” Now the little prince asked.
“He might.” Sansa took a big sip of her cup, hiding her fear and pain. “Would you like that?” He frowned.
“No. I don’t think so.”
“Even if he does, Sansa will do her duty. Won’t you, little dove?” You bit your tongue. Seeing her like that broke your heart. She was on the brink of tears.
“We can’t be certain of anything. The food was delicious.” Changing the topic was the first thing that came to your mind.
“It’s a pretty ring, where did you get it, little dove?” Cersei glare landed suspiciously at her finger. She opened her mouth but didn’t utter a single word. You put your hand on Sansa’s to calm her anxiety.
“I gave it to her so she can remember her home, mother.”
“The home of traitors.” She bitterly laughed.
“I lost my appetite. Excuse us.” You gestured Sansa to stand up and left the place. “May I escort you to your chambers, my lady?” She nodded lowering her head.
“Your brother and your sister are just as friendly as you, Y/N.”
“They like you. I apologize for my mother’s behavior. Have a lovely night.” You bid her goodnight, she gave you a quick hug and then you couldn’t help but kissed swiftly her cheek, the torches were burning low so you didn’t quite see her reaction. You hoped you didn’t make her feel uncomfortable.
The following day you chatted with uncle Tyrion. He told you some news you weren’t expecting.
“Your sister must go. She will be promised to Prince Trystane of Dorne. I tell you before you learn from your mother.”
“She won’t like that. She’s so young, uncle... I don’t know.” It was true, giving her to strangers and people who despise your family didn’t sound like a good idea.
“She’ll be safer there if the city falls when one of the self-proclaimed Kings come.” He had a point.
“You are right.” Still, you feared for Myrcella.
You walked to the throne room just to find the King humiliating the Stark girl and shouting things at her with all the lords and ladies contemplating the scene. She was on her knees, with her garments all ripped out.
“If we want Robb Stark to hear us we’re going to have to speak louder!” Ser Meryn was ready to strike her.
“Stop it! What do you think you’re doing?” You furiously yelled.
“Are you crazy? What kind of knight beats a helpless girl?” Tyrion intervened.
“The kind who serves his king, Imp.” Meryn responded.
“Careful now. We don’t want to get blood all over your pretty white cloak.” Bronn added looking at him, a hand on his sword.
“Here, my lady.” You took off your cape. Luckily you were wearing one today. “What did I told you about treating her like this? She did nothing wrong. Have you no regard for her honor, brother? She is going to be your queen!”
“I’m punishing her.” He complained.
“For what crimes? She did not fight her brother’s battle, you half-wit.” The youngest Lannister repressed him.
“You can’t talk to me like that. The king does as he likes!” Joffrey whined.
“The Mad King did as he liked. Has your uncle Jaime ever told you what happened to him?”
“No one threatens his grace on the presence of the kingsguard.” The awful knight spoke.
“I’m not. I’m just educating my nephew. Bronn, next time Ser Meryn speaks, kill him. That was a threat. See the difference?”
“Come.” You helped Sansa got up.
“Tell us the truth. Do you want an end to this engagement?” The throne room followed you with their glances.
“I am loyal to King Joffrey. My one true love.” You shook your head to the short man. Sansa walked out just as if nothing had happened. You knew too well she had to keep pretending, the wrong people might hear if she said what she really wanted to say.
Late at night you found yourself staring at the ceiling of your room. You were thinking about Sansa, oh how hard you were falling for that smile and those blue eyes... she was perfect, but of course she’ll never feel the same way, considering the possibility was silly. She deserved to be loved, you could love her, would she let you do it? No, you were also a girl. Being around her was enough, protecting her and keeping the promise you made to Lady Catelyn. Your little sister is going off to some strange land, gods, life is getting harder...

What are your thoughts on Jaime x Cersei, Jaime x Brienne, Tyrion x Tysha, George x Isabel, and Henry VIII x Anne Boleyn? (Sorry for the long list!)
Glad to see someone else feeling charitable and letting me vent my unsolicited opinions 😂. Saved the George x Isabel for the last cause I’m sure it will be the longest lmao!
Asked Via: Send me a ship and I'll give you my (brutally) honest opinion on it: https://lady-plantagenet.tumblr.com/post/627331607624302592/send-me-a-ship-and-ill-give-you-my-brutally
Jaime x Cersei: Despite it’s fundamental flaws, it is... titillating to read. The idea of people falling in love with their own other-gender counterpart is twisted yet so intriguing. I must confess that I am not as disgusted by incest as most people, so bear that in mind. The thing is, Cersei is definitely a narcissist with a lot of internalised misogyny and this ship just feels so justified to her character.
The issue is, and as the books go on, it becomes quickly clear that Jaime’s love is not as deep and as his appearance changes, and they no longer look identical Cersei’s own mental image, Cersei’s love also wanes and then you’re hit with how shallow it was. So I ship these two... but I also don’t because they’re toxic? Honestly, book-wise I am intrigued to see what will happen, if they end up together... or they don’t... either way I’m sure it will be quite a ride. You see, I’m not emotionally invested.
Jaime x Brienne: Oh the Sapphires... Obviously anyone who cares for Jaime’s wellbeing would want him to end up with Brienne as opposed to Cersei. I read this interesting theory recently on how these two don’t actually love each other but confuse their strong platonic feelings of affection for romance. You see, that’s also an interesting take as both characters are quite bereft off opposite gender friendships.
However, I strongly ship them romantically as well, Book!Brienne (hey show as well!) is truly admirable because based on her choice in men e.g. Renly, you can see how she had still not given up on her maidenly fantasies and I just love her for that, because true love isn’t something to which only pretty women are entitled. She in many ways represents salvation for him as she being a true knight in spite of her gender, can veer him back into the path of chivalry. He is most chivalrous around her, I mean, not only because her good conduct influences but also because he performs some of the most knightly deeds by cause of her e.g. rescuing her from the bear pit. I like this ship, it’s a good trope subversion.
Tyrion x Tysha: I find this one of the more heartbreaking ships of ASOIAF, because to me it represents Tyrion’s loss of innocence.
She is a haunting figure because of how small remnants of her memory were enough to pull Tyrion into the toxic relationship he had with Shae e.g. she too hard dark hair and there was music around when he met her. Its one of those weird (as @omgellendean put it in her brutally honest ask tag answer - a character who consists of only a name), but unlike Ashara Dayne, she is not idealised and given this over-the-top tragic story. So this elusive Tysha is an entity by what she symbolises: foregone youth and a sweetness that has no place in the ASOIAF universe.
Henry VIII x Anne Boleyn: As I said in my last ask. I cannot tolerate the romanticisation of infidelity, and that is especially when the male’s spouse is a wonderful woman fit for him and has done nothing wrong. I don’t have strong feelings against Anne Boleyn herself, as I prefer to see her as ‘Anne the Educated and Sophisticated Reformer’ as opposed to ‘Anne the Seductress’. Ugh let me just say... rule of thumb for whether it’s a good pair: Do thousands have to die for your selfish desire to be together? Yes? Then probably not meant to be. Just a thought.
I think Anne knew her own mind and I like to think her strong beliefs influenced her decision to breach this marriage (no I didn’t think she was her father’s pawn gah I’m sick of that term), but they were ultimately unsuited in everything and it was a passion brought about by Henry’s caprice. My heart breaks when I think on how Anne could have been happily married to Henry Percy. I’m also tried of this whole ‘master manipulator of men’s hearts’ reputation Anne is getting. You do realise refusing to be a mistress was not being a tease as much as it was just being a conventionally virtuous woman..? The girl knew her worth.
George x Isabel: Oh god. I promise to not start writing an essay. As weird as it is to ship dead people, they are my OTP, the main characters of my main historyfanfic, and frankly the most unsung couple of TWOTR. The fact that there are no records of letters or any particularly over-the-top romantic gestures by either of them, just intrigues me more because it was very much a relationship defined in subtle deeds. If you peruse the more academic TWOTR literature you can see all the fine but conclusive evidences of a devoted relationship: He posthumously enrolled her in a guild when he stayed there with his children (months after she died), he was buried together with her and her ancestors not his, how during 1470 he sent her to Exeter for her safekeeping while her mother and sister remained at Warwick and when a siege broke out he (and his father-in-law) immediately rode south to lift it and the amount of expenses and care he put into her funeral. Not to mention, the hassle it took for them to get married: years of trying to get a dispensation underneath the king’s nose culminating in them having to cross the channel.
The thing is, it had a lot of politics behind it and to be honest I don’t find that less romantic. It was one right for both of them: for the wealthiest heiress in England and the handsome younger brother and heir of King Edward - truly no one else would do for any of them. One of the things that grabs me is the medievalness of it all, how they were bound together by what was essentially a plan to reverse the country’s inevitable transition out of ‘bastard feudalism’. You also get a sense of how this marriage despite the ultimate failure of its purpose (to make George King) brought George the chance to establish himself as a major magnate through his wife’s lands which ultimately became his main source of power as opposed to his royal status. The relative peace that ensued after 1472 shows that his status as Warwick’s political heir (as Christine Carpenter put it) did something to placate the disapointment of not becoming king. So the way I see it, Isabel’s death took from him any of the satisfaction and peace she brought with her lands and persona as he once again reverted to his old (even more than before) reckless self. Not to mention the people he executed after her death in his grief believe in her to have been poisoned (most historians believe that’s unlikely).
Aside from that, in a society where pretty much everyone strayed (even Anthony Woodville had a bastard daughter), it is quite heart-warming how the man known for his treachery, happened to be one of the only ones loyal to his wife: no bastards or women were ever linked to his name not even in rumour. As for Isabel, she is quite a shadowy figure but you get the sense she was intelligent because of the care her father took in preparing her as his heir, because of her wealth you get this sense of majesty and significance about her. The two times we can deduce anything about her personality is a true supporter of her husband: once, when deciding to treat with the Yorks behind her father’s back to reconcile George to them, second, remaining steadfast to George when he tried to squirrel her sister Anne out of her inheritance. Based on the homage she paid to her ancestors, she seems proud of her ancestry so it’s quite intriguing to think why she made the aforementioned two choices, endangering her father and sister in favour of her husband. And oh god I’m rambling, I can say even more if you can believe it but I shall stop. Overall, one might think I’m wishful thinking but frankly Anne and Richard are touted as star-crossed lovers all the time and with even littler evidence to support it (not that I don’t ship them, I do). I might be subjective, but the story of George and Isabel’s life is just so compelling...

The "Tyrion is notably misogynistic" take is extremely common in the fandom. In general, he is judged far more harshly for his moral failings than other (male) characters. It's especially stark when you compare it to how the fans tend to excuse Jaime, a two time would-be child murderer. Why do you think Tyrion earns so much scorn? Is it abelism? Backlash to the show's white washing of his character? Something I'm missing? Or do you disagree with my premise entirely? Any input would be great.
I’m not in anybody else’s head (thank god) so I don’t know why anyone responds to a fictional character as they do, and each person’s reasons are probably as different as the grains of sand on a beach. Reading and relating to fiction is a deeply personal experience. Some people are going to love Tyrion, while others will hate him, and some will judge him harshly while others might let him off easy. It comes down to our own lived experiences and how we translate those into the stories we love.
I disagreed (strongly) with the other anon, but I’m not an authority on any of this. I’m not an authority on ASOIAF. I’m not the final arbiter of misogyny. I answered the other anon based on my own understanding of Tyrion, my own understanding of misogyny, my own reading of the text, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I’m right and they’re wrong.
I actually don’t think I feel comfortable saying that the people who believe “Tyrion is exceptionally misogynistic” are wrong. Yes, I strongly disagree with that take, I can’t stress that enough, but each person’s opinion on fiction is very personal. For example, if a sex worker said to me that they find Tyrion to be exceptionally misogynistic, who am I to say that they’re wrong? Fiction allows for different, completely contradictory opinions.
I would actually be very interested in reading an unbiased argument by someone who believes that “Tyrion is exceptionally misogynistic compared to the rest of Westeros,” with concrete examples of Tyrion’s specific instances of alleged misogyny, along with thorough explanations of why each instance is misogynistic, citing various feminist scholars and their definitions of misogyny. I would then like the actions of a handful of other major male characters, including Jaime, to be examined for instances of misogyny, and I would like this small sample to be compared to Tyrion.
Because yeah, I do think this take is very common, but I want to see more evidence to back it up. I hope this isn’t being read facetiously because my wish is sincere. Misogyny, IMO, is punishing women who don’t uphold patriarchy, and I would be interested in seeing Tyrion’s actions analyzed with this definition, or at least some authoritative definitions, in mind, because, while some of Tyrion’s thoughts and actions certainly fit this definition, I think the majority do not. But the word misogyny is thrown around so much now, that I think it’s losing meaning, and I think some meaning has to be brought back into the conversation surrounding Tyrion. I vented to a friend recently, “if [redacted female character] came up to Tyrion and randomly punched him in the stomach, and Tyrion called her out on it, Tyrion’s calling her out on it would be considered an example of his misogyny.”
So yeah, I do tend to agree with you. To offer a theory why, I think Tyrion is the antagonist in the stories of a lot of female POV characters, from the perspective of those female POV characters. Not to mention some non-POV female characters that Tyrion has most definitely wronged. Tumblr skews female, and a lot of readers identify with these female characters over Tyrion. I think Tyrion is really at odds with a lot of female POVs in a way that someone like Jaime isn’t. For example, Tyrion and Catelyn are at odds in AGOT. Tyrion is at odds with his sister throughout the books. Tyrion is at odds with Sansa in ASOS. While I find it easy to sympathize with both parties in these conflicts, some people choose to sympathize with only one. Which is also valid. I don’t necessarily think there’s a right or wrong way to respond to literature. But I think this lack of sympathy for Tyrion tends to mean he’s judged very harshly.
I also tend to think that Tyrion is GRRM’s greyest POV hero. Tyrion does some really horrible things. Now, as you say, Jaime does some horrible things too, but I’ve never really thought of Jaime ending as one of the heroes because I believe he is the valonqar. I have never felt that Jaime is going beyond the curtain of light, which I think Tyrion will. And I think we tend to judge our heroes more harshly than … whatever you would like to call the category that includes Jaime and Cersei and Tywin. And let me say, holy fuck is Tywin misogynistic, but somehow Tyrion is the worst misogynist in Westeros??? 👀👀 But Tyrion is on the balance scales of heroism, straddling light and darkness. With someone like Tywin, it’s like, “oh yeah, he’s a villain, that’s to be expected.” But with Tyrion? I don’t think anyone reading AGOT predicted ADWD Tyrion’s dark descent. And it’s that greyness that makes Tyrion interesting to me, complicated, real. Tyrion isn’t like Harry, he’s not like Lucy and Susan and Peter, he’s not like Rand, he’s not like Vimes. Tyrion’s hard to root for sometimes. And Tyrion is definitely misogynistic, even if I don’t think his misogyny is particularly exceptional, as I said in my other post. But I think GRRM has imbued the books with this sense that he is a hero (there is a general consensus that he is one of the three heads of the dragon) but would a hero really strangle Shae? Would a hero marry a 12 year old? And so it’s like WTF GRRM? which translates into a desire to “prove” that Tyrion was “the worst/the villain” all along. Even though I don’t think that’s GRRM’s point. I think GRRM’s point is that we have hero and villain both inside each of us. Even if you’ve done horrible things, you’re still, in this moment, capable of heroism; never doubt humanity’s ability to rise.

oh don’t worry, rosalie stopped seeing cersei as a mother when there was a sliver of a hint that she would hurt sansa, and then when she subtly mocked her sister in front of her... they’re relationship is certainly strained following ned’s death...
Good, and I can relate. I'm extremely protective of Sansa, so any character threatens her and they go on my Death List. Joffrey? I mean he was already there but you get the point. Littlefinger, Lysa, even Shae and Olenna. The opposite is also true. Look out for Sansa and you leap higher up on my list of favorites - looking at you, Tyrion and Margaery, keep up the good work.
All this to say that the reason I got off on such a bad footing with Cersei was largely thanks to her interactions with Sansa - and I wasn't even that invested in her yet. But between the unspeakable business with Lady and the "Have you bled yet?" line, (probably a socially acceptable thing to ask a teenager in this world, but that doesn't make it any less creepy. Sansa looked so uncomfortable.) I just never got on board with Cersei.
I did feel a degree of pity for her when Robert hit her and then when she recounted what marriage to him was like. And hell, I'd even argue that Ned wasn't altogether in the right during that scene. Telling Cersei to take her children and run before he tells Robert because "I will not have their blood on my hands." Then don't tell him? How do you justify telling Robert if you know he'll react that way? Why is he your best friend if he's the sort of person to react that way? Who cares if Cersei is cheating on him? It's a mutually loveless marriage anyway.
But...that pity evaporated by the end of the season. It's not just how she treats Sansa - the way she treats Tyrion is another example. But as much as I champion the "problematic mentor" trope, I get so angry during all the scenes where Cersei has the nerve to try and mentor Sansa. To act like a mother figure to the child she has imprisoned and sentenced to marrying the son she knows is a monster.

can you elaborate a bit what made you divorce from asoiaf/got as you say?
Ooof, so, after the G0T finale, I think my reasons should be obvious, but you also mentioned the books and yes, I lost my interest in books too and I will try to not make this answer too long, but in the same time, to convey all my thoughts on this matter.
*Putting it below cut because.... when I`ll explain the problem of Martin`s fans later, you`ll understand why*
It`s amazing that just a year ago, AS0IAF was my second favourite franchise ever, second only to Tolkien legendarium, but even then, I didn`t love it for the fantasy elements in it, but rather for its characters and some twists and how Martin does forshadowing and writes the dualistic nature of the human being, but...as I read other fantasy series that do these four things AND have fantasy elements, I paused a bit and thought that these series would be just as popular, if they had popular adaptations such as G0T. But I got that AS0IAF was the first that had the opportunity to be adapted and I accepted that. Yet the show highlighted (and in some cases, amplified) some of the very big issues of these books and yes, D&D have many things to be blamed of, but it`s not as if they didn`t have a basis for their fuckery in the books. Martin is just as guilty. So here we go.
1. I am not sure if Martin has ever seen a 13 year old girl, but he writes grown-ass men having fixations and being sexually attracted by Daenerys and Sansa, two prepubescent girl. Martin would call it the gritty realism of the medieval times, but last time I checked, he was writing fantasy, not historical fiction. Fantasy means you can do what you want in your world, so even if you are inspired by the medieval times, it`s still YOUR fictional world and no one will question your research or accuracy if you want to have a female character married when she is at least, say, 18, not FUCKING 13. Not to mention that even in our real world, child brides existed but, guess what, in most the cases, both spouses waited until the wife reached a certain age (16 or older) to consummate their marriage. @eyes-painted-with-kohl explained in the notes of one of my posts and even gave an example or two. I can think of Isabella of France and Edward II. They were married when she was 13 (according to some historical evidence)/16 (according to others). Yes, I know he was homosexual, but he still needed heirs, so they still had children...4 years later, when she was 17/20.
2. In this same vein, the treatment of his female characters (with the exception of Arya and, maybe Catelyn) is egregious. Daenerys and Sansa are sexualized by the male characters (don`t get me started of the bullshit that is S/ansan, because The Hound is still a murderous man who is aroused by a 12 year-old girl, who invaded her personal space and even pointed a knife to her; do not get me started on book!Jorah, who is a creep). Cersei is paraded naked on the streets and needless to say that during the walk of atonement for an adulterous woman in medieval times, she was never stripped naked; she only had her hair shaved and walked BAREFOOT. That`s it. What Martin did to Cersei is just disgusting. We are shown how Arianne uses sex to have Ser Arys help with her plans and it is implied that Margaery uses sex also. I get that sex is Cersei`s mechanism, but you have two more feminine (this is important) women in power and both of them explicitly use, or are implied to use sex as a mean to gain that power. I get Brienne`s point, her treatment bothers me the least, but it`s annoying from time to time how most of the other characters see only her ”ugliness” and nothing else. Of course, this is the result of the heavy patriarchy in Westeros world that I will discuss in the next paragraph.
3. The heavy patriarchy in Westeros world is nowhere similar to the patriarchy in the medieval times, and that was Martin`s choice and his only. A clear example is what was dubbed the Dead Ladies Club, namely a group of dead female characters whose only purpose was to serve as object of desire for one or more men, to give birth AND to die (gruesomely in some cases). Joanna Lannister is meant only to further fuel the enmity between Tywin and Aerys and Tywin`s hatred towards Tyrion. Elia exists solely to die gruesomely and motivate Doran`s desire for vengeance. Lyanna (the most explored dead lady still exists mainly to give birth to Jon and to be one of the reasons behind a war started by men. Rhaella exists solely to be raped by Aerys and give birth and die. Ashara Dayne exists solely to commit suicide. Ned, a POV character, spends chapters thinking about his father and siblings and never to his mother. Martin had the audacity to say that Tolkien himself didn`t left notes about Aragorn`s mother, but Tolkien had an entire story when Aragorn`s mother and her impact of his life is explored (more than his father, for that matter). The heavy patriarchy serves as reason for the utterly disgusting right of the first night (read Fire & Blood for more). I am not so versed into history as @mydaylightruyi who discussed this, but I too know that in our real world, this practice was a MYTH. But GRRM made it very present in his world because of reasons I guess.
4. The racism is just rampant and disgusting and even I didn`t notice all the racism until I read @polysorscha `s insights. There`s a to be discussed here, mainly about the portrayal of the Dothraki and how they are reduced to barbaric rapists - interestingly, they are supposedly inspired by Huns, but guess what: the Huns formed a very permisive society, where any religion and culture had its places, where women were very respected and, while cruel  in the European people`s POV, were never....like THIS.
5. The rape cultures. The Ironborn. Similarly to the Dothraki, their culture is reduced to pillaging and rape. That scene when Euron conquers that castle in the Reach ( I forgot its name) and how he had the daughters of that lord stripped naked and serve his men the meal, and how his men started raping them was....honestly, I wish I could have skipped this chapter. I still read fantasy books written by men more than I read fantasy books written by women, but never in my life did it occur to me to read something like this in a novel that is so hailed for fantasy (?) and realism (???????). I`m not saying that things like that didn`t happen in our cruel history but, again, Martin writes a fictional story. He could choose not to include the rampant violence against women, cultures whose practices are reduced to this utterly gross things, racist and orientalist elements, but he chooses not to. Why? I don`t know. I am not sure I want to know. And Victarion`s POV...oh boy. Or Theon, in ACOK, when he literally rapes that Kyra girl after takes Winterfell. Not only that it`s very disturbing, especially coming from a character that is supposed to be redeemed in some way (yes, I know how he`s been through in ADWD and I also know this is meant to be his redemption arc, but I personally still can`t get over this). And in the same time, while we`re still at the redemption discussion, Theon will surely undergo a redemption of some sorts, Cersei (a female character) will most likely be killed by her lover/brother, who will strangle her to death, most likely while he will embrace her, without a second chance of a droplet of redemption.
6. I love Tyrion and I love Tywin but in the same time, I acknowledge their misogyny, but Martin chose to write them as misogynists, but in the same time, writing them in such ways that they are inherently labelled as „badass”. He also says that Tyrion is his favourite, but his POV is utterly misogynistic. The reason he kills Shae is because she dared to sleep with his father, but let`s unpack the things a bit: she was a former sex worker with no power, who was forced by the most powerful man in Westeros. She had no choice. She couldn`t refuse him. Yet, for Tyrion, she is ”the lying whore” and that`s it. We are given no chance to try to see the things from her POV (I am not implying that she should have been a POV character, but Martin should have written Tyrion considering for a moment what other choices Shae had).
7. I discovered that Martin straightly ripped-off many plot points and themes from another series who isn`t half as popular, sadly.
8. Last, but not the least, the snake pit that is THE FANDOM. You know, as much as I tried to stay away from its toxicity because „it`s just an internet thing, it can`t affect me”, it did affect my online experience in ways that I hadn`t imagined. To sum up, if you don`t like a character or hate another, you are  a pariah. You are dumb because you don`t understand that character or you are a misogynist (because, sadly, this discourse is mostly about the female characters). If you dare to voice up your thoughts about a certain event and/or a certain character and tag your post as #asoiaf or #asoiaf meta (you know, because this is it to me: a meta; plus, I want to have an ordering system in my blog so that whenever I want to look for a certain post in a certain topic or fandom, I would only look into the tag) or #my meta (highlighted „MY” because this is also important, as in it`s MY OWN PERSONAL OPINION), and those thoughts happen to not fit into the general consensus of the „great AS0IAF bloggers” (namely those meta writers with many followers who sound like they already read TWOW and ADOS), you are trashed and called an idiot. Granted, I met enough great people, meta writers included, in this fandom, and it was a real pleasure to chat with them, but I also had bad experiences with others and idk, I thought we were all mature people, but the way they reacted can hardly be described as mature. And in the same point, it`s just funny to see the hardcore Martin stans reacting in front of the clear evidence that Martin isn`t half as original as they thought (see 7) and acting like they are personally attacked.
Ok, it took me an hour. There is a lot more to discussed, but I got bored and I honestly want to shut the door to this fandom forever. To answer another question, yes, I will be reading the last two books  if when they will come out. I invested many months in this series not to finish it. I`ll probably block all the ASOIAF-related tags to avoid any interaction with its fandom during those times.

Long live Queen Sansa
————-
When I hear people complain about Sansa, I ask them to list their grievances with her, and justify their complaints. Most of the time, they can’t. I’ll list a few I’ve heard.
It’s because in the first season she was spoiled and naive, a dull foil for Arya, romanticizing Joffrey, lying about Arya and Joff’s fight, and writing the letter of fealty to Robb.
Well, to that I say, she was a sheltered young girl. She was raised to be proper and polite by ned and Cat, but not taught to be worldly. It’s hardly her fault she is naive, and young people do stupid things when they have a crush, including blinding themselves to character flaws. As for lying about the fight? She was half drunk and terrified, And the letter? She was forced to write it under duress, and did so to save her father.
Another reason people complain about Sansa was because she was a weak, helpless, crying victim in seasons 2 and 3. She was still rude and entitled to Shae, and she was rude and dismissive to Tyrion on their wedding night.
Pretty pathetic in my opinion, resenting a girl, a lonely, terrified victim, constantly threatened and beaten and degraded. Not everyone can be Arya, or Daenerys. Sansa handled her situation with grace, even consoling the noble ladies during the Battle of the Blackwater. How is that not heroic? She also gets some shrewd jabs in at Joffrey, and attempts to manipulate him.
As for being rude to Shae? Cut the girl some slack, she’s in a perpetual Hell, and suddenly, a servant is providing piss-poor servitude. Sansa lashes out because a servant is the only person she has any degree of control and degree of power over. Oh, and she instantly makes amends. Christ, it’s not like she had her beaten. As for Tyrion and their wedding night She was forced the marry the ugly, scared dwarf, and a member of the vile family working against her family. She didn't want to marry him, she was forced to, and she made herself ready to consummate. Thankfully, Tyrion didn’t insist on it (as that’d be rape, by modern standards), but she still submitted. Should she have pretended to be happy about it? Who among you (complainers) would have handled the situation as well in her stead?
I’ve seen people complain in season 4 she backs Littlefinger.
This one makes no sense to me, because the same people that complain she’s weak, and foolish and used as a pawn somehow get upset she chose to play the game, and back the devil she knew rather than isolate herself again at the mercy of strangers. This was a huge step forward for her character. yes, she backed a bad person, but so what? It was within her best interests to DO so! Yeh, we all wanted justice done to Littlefinger, but, that DID happen later, now, didn’t it?
I’ve seen people complain she dismisses Brienne and because she reverts back to a victim when Ramsay’s wife.
As far as dismissing Brienne, rewatch the scene…it makes perfect sense for Sansa to chose to remain with Littlefinger and a dozen armored knights that are loyal to her safety, rather than risk going off with a stranger in Brienne, who had Pod, a Lannister man, as a squire. Additionally, Littlefinger cast doubt as to Brienne’s loyalties, or at lest her effectiveness. Sansa dismissing her was smart, and I also note that NO ONE criticizes Arya for being as dismissive as Sansa was. To her credit, Sansa SAW Brienne at Joffrey’s wedding!
The second complaint is partially warranted in my opinion. I was, originally, excited to see Sansa work from within, set herself up appearing to be a pawn and victim, and, secretly undermining the Boltons and sewing seeds of contempt and resentment between Roose and Ramsay. And, to a slight extent, she did. She did plant the seeds of doubt in Ramsay’s mind, and they may have contributed to his eventual betrayal of his father, and his subsequent murder. In a way, that means Sansa did, in a way, help avenge her brother Robb. As for Sansa crying and being helpless as she was raped, well, you’re blaming a rape victim. Plain and simple. What was she supposed to do?? Pretend to enjoy it? Ramsay not only disgusted her, he hurt her. Additionally, she and Littlefinger’s plan hedged on Stannis’ victory. When it became clear he might lose, her anxiety was justified, as the method of her liberation was now threatened. Despite this, she bravely chooses to die with dignity when threatened by Myranda, and, she bravely chose to escape with Theon.
People complain that after Sansa is brought to Castle Black, she undermines and lies to Jon.
Okay, for starters, Sansa was very kind to Jon, even apologizing for her nativity and snobbish demeanor. That’s character growth that often goes unnoticed by her critics. As for being critical of Jon’s stubborn insistence to fight the Boltons, despite being at a massive disadvantage, she was right to do so! Jon was being a damned idiot. Sansa called him out for being reckless, and her warnings to him went entirely ignored. And Sansa didn’t lie to Jon, she just withheld information, but, given HE was not giving HER her proper due/respect, paying no mind to her suggestions and not soliciting her advice, so, why should she offer him the card up her sleeve? Especially if she felt Jon would foolishly squander it? She was absolutely right to keep the information to herself, and only employ the Vale Knights when it was ideal. SHE WON THE BATTLE. Not Jon. Likewise, after HE gets named King, and accepts, usurping her rightful position as Lady of Winterfell, she shows her devotion supporting her brother, but she just voices her opinion when he makes critically erroneous decisions. Arya, fan favorite Mary Sue, seemingly resents Sansa for this, even viewing her as her season 1 personality (which is dumb given how far removed she is now from the girl she was) and even goes so far as to threaten her. Thankfully, Sansa realizes she was being manipulated by Littlefinger, and she outfoxes him, puts him on trial, and chooses her family over her useful ally. Somehow, however, some people still view Sansa as being stupid or annoying here.
Lastly, people have complained Sansa was ungrateful, unfairly rude and antagonistic to Daenerys.
Well, Sansa was again right to do so. Daenerys revealed herself to be an ambitious, power hungry tyrant in the making. Sansa recognized this. She recognized where she was manipulating Jon. And, she feared for the sovereignty and safety of her people/country. She was not unduly opposing Daenerys. Her pressing for Northern independence was right. Daenerys comes across far more petty and vicious in their little rifts anyway. Sansa may be snide, but Daenerys outright threatens her host, publicly and privately.
And, many people can’t even cite why they hate Sansa with examples. They simply articulate their opinion saying she’s selfish, rude, unlikable, weak or annoying. Even after I explain how she’s actually, by series end, benevolent and selfless, polite courteous, strong and inspiring, they concur my logic and examples are accurate, but, they remain steadfast in their dislike. When I encounter that I assume one of two things. One, people cannot move past their very first opinion of her. That she was all of those traits, initially, they cannot move past seeing her that way, and despite her years of growth and long, dynamic character arc, they choose to still see her negatively, and therefore magnify her flaws (real or imagined), and mitigate her strength and successes. The second is, some people (especially a contingency of women) resent her for being a character who overcomes her adversity and rises in power in a more traditionally feminine way. The same people that loved Daenerys for burning men alive and being “a bad bitch, the Queen Bee, empowering”, or cheering on Arya becoming a sociopathic killer because “she’s a bad ass, you go girl!”, or even rooting for Cersei cannot stand that Sansa suffered through the indignity and degradation that came with being a woman (and all subsequent gender role expectations) in a violent, medieval, patriarchal world. They hate her because she cried, or was raped, or was initially naive, or wanted to be a Lady, that she as dependent on men, and that she would submit to her brother, a man. Resenting her for these reasons speaks volumes about those that criticize her, as they choose to ignore or dismiss her ascent in power and skill because she was not, essentially, always dominant in doing so. Her more nuanced, and, realistic character arc/growth wasn’t as sexy, fun, and gratifying as say Arya’s or Daenerys’.
So, no, Sansa doesn’t annoy me. I find hers to be possibly the story best character arc, and I think she’s a woman of strength, wisdom and grace, who has come the farthest from where she began, suffered some of the worst hardships, persevered, and grown into a better person, and a fantastic and successful monarch.

Armor - Oberyn Martell x Reader x Ellaria Sand - Part 1
Tumblr media
Author’s Note: Hey everyone! So this is the first fic I’ve ever posted on tumblr, low key kinda scary😄 But this man and his paramour have been on my mind for the longest. This is a self insert fic, but I don’t really use “Y/N”. Hope you enjoy and any feedback would be great!
Summary: You are an assassin hired by Tyrion to act as extra security alongside Bronn. He brings you back to King’s Landing just as the boy king Jeoffry Baratheon plans to marry the cunning Margaery Tyrell. But with all the guests roaming around, you begin to wonder who is a friend and who is a foe. No one makes you wonder more than the famed prince from Dorne and his captivating paramour.
Word Count: 2.6k
Warnings: mentions of murder, allusions to sex
—————
You never knew anything in the seven kingdoms could make you feel so small. It wasn’t as if you’d ever let it show. You held your head high, walking alongside Tyrion as both of you entered the great hall of the throne room, Bronn on the opposite side of your employer. The Red Keep was even bigger than you had imagined it to be. The throne room was the tallest room you had ever seen. Against the dark ceiling the columns looked as if they stretched up into the night sky.
Every eye in the palace was on the three of you, and you felt no one’s eyes more than Cersei’s. You held her gaze. A woman who lived in luxury her whole life did not frighten you. She may have influence, but you had experience, strength, freedom, and skill with your bow that you were now acutely aware was strapped to your back. Having the protection of Tyrion’s influence and connections and Bronn’s strength and skill with a sword brought a sense of comfort, allowing you to remain calm under such scrutinizing gaze.
“Brother.” Cersei greeted with a soft smile that failed to hide all the vileness in her heart. “You come with friends.”
“Oh no, more like bodyguards. We have so many enemies now a days sister, I like to know I’m protected.” Tyrion smirked, leaving Bronn chuckling. You, on the other hand, would not let your intimidating demeanor fade, remaining as stoic and unyielding as the stone columns that held up the palace you wished to see fall. “May I introduce Bronn, Lord of Highgarden and-“
“Yes, I know all about the Silver Hawk from the North. I wonder if you are half as good as they say you are.” She mocked, her tone anything but genuinely curious. “I am told that you can hit your target 200 meters away and steal their breath before they even know what hit them.” If you didn’t know any better you’d think she was impressed, even if she did look at you as if you were the lowest creature she ever beheld.
“Perhaps I will have an opportunity to display my skills while I am here, your grace.” You’ll see first hand when my arrow is aimed just above your crooked neck.
“Perhaps.” She replied, feigning as much sweetness as a ferrel cat.
The both of you narrowed your eyes at each other. There was no outright exchange of harsh words or petty language, but the furious tension between the two of you was enough to fill the entire hall with uncomfortable silence. You hoped your unyielding gaze scared her. You wondered how many people actually defied her, you wondered how long it would take to get under her skin.
“Yes, well.” Tyrion interrupted, knowing you were bubbling with anger. Cersei was too, and although you allowed her to see your own emotions, it please you a bit to know you could anger her just as easy. You hated Lannisters almost more than anything, but you also knew Cersei’s time would come. She would pay for her crimes, fate would decide her end. You knew that fate had not brought you here to slay the queen regent, as much as you despised her. “As much as I love chatting with you sister, I simply wanted our arrival to be known. We have much unpacking to do and much to discuss.”
“Be careful, little brother.” She warned. “Your guard has little reserve and it seems your little silver hawk has a silver tongue as well. You would be wise to remember that people have been killed for that and less.”
“I’ll be sure to keep very close watch over them.” Tyrion retorted sarcastically before turning on his heal and exiting the great hall. You and Bronn followed, the later unable to contain his amusement.
“I’d say that went well!” He quipped, smiling at both you and your employer.
“She didn’t call to chop off our heads, that is some relief.” Tyrion noted. “But you both must be careful, especially you.” His scrutinizing gaze met yours.
“What? You expected me to just let her try and hold some dominate power over me? Just because she is draped in finest jewels in the seven realms and hides behind the her father’s influence does not mean I will tremble like a child before her.”
Tyrion sighed. “You must, for now, hold your tongue. Your wit does you credit, that’s why I like you, but you must check yourself. My sister is more dangerous than you can imagine. Don’t tremble, but don’t overstep either.” You remembered that Tyrion had been playing the game his whole life, he was basically born into it. He knew his sister better than anyone, and that meant he knew how to get around her better than anyone. You made a note to observe exactly what made Cersei tick, what made her preen under her usually reserved demeanor.
Despite the warm tones of the palace, you felt as though you were walking on ice. One wrong step and you were dead under a frozen tundra. You didn’t like this at all. Tyrion promised your freedom would not be at risk, yet you felt the freedom to speak your mind, the freedom to do as you pleased slip from you more and more. You were being watched here, you weren’t stupid. Every move had to be calculated, every word like honey laced with poison. The faster the boy king could marry, the less people there were for you to worry about. It made you uncomfortable not knowing who was an ally and who was a foe. The one thing you could appreciate about Cersei was that you always knew where you stood with her.
“I will try to remain civil if she approaches me, otherwise I will avoid your sister to the best of my abilities. But she would be wise not to challenge my reserve.” I huffed, earning a laugh from Bronn.
“Your reserve, little hawk, will be undone, whether it be from your words or your arrows.” He teased. You gave him a shove and he stumbled a bit, but not much. The last thing you needed was the oaf calling you “little”.
“The sooner we are out of this horrid place the better.” You huffed.
“I agree,” Tyrion agreed, nodding in understanding, “but don’t hold your breath. There is so much to be done before my nephew’s wedding and I will be relying on both of you to help me. While I am arranging more intimate details with my family, you two will be protecting me, but also doing some side tasks that I will not have time for. Bronn, for the most part you will be either at my side or Shae’s. If the palace discovers her they will use her against me. She can’t be found.”
Shae, Tyrion’s lover of sorts. You had grown close to her on your travels. You were wary at first. Your job was to protect Tyrion, naturally, you were cautious of anyone who might try to hurt him, to get close to him only for information or power. But it was a tough business, out spying a spy, and all your instincts told you to trust Shae. She had not left any of you astray thus far, and though the couple had not named their relationship, you could tell Tyrion and Shae cared immensely for each other. But Tyrion was right, she could be used as a pawn against him, especially if Cersei found out.
There was a sort of kinship between you and Shae. You were both strong, clever women, and she had tended to the few wounds you found yourself with on your travels. She seemed like a sister, and you were grateful for the company and friendship she provided.
“As for our favorite archer, you will be assisting some guests, getting information. I want to know the people attending this wedding, I want to ensure that this wedding goes smoothly. The Tyrell’s are a powerful ally, we cannot lose them.”
You nodded in understanding. Tyrion hired you to protect him, yes, but archery was not your only strength. You could be quiet, and you could listen as well as you could speak. You knew he would ask that of you with all the guests roaming around. You were curious to know what King’s Landing was really like, and even more interested in knowing the people who came here. “Ask it of me and it will be done.”
“Aye.” Bronn agreed.
“You are the most trusted of friends.” Tyrion gave the smallest of smiles. You were hesitant to even be in his service when the lord found you and offered you a job, afraid of losing your freedom. You knew the Lannisters, you knew their foul and power-hungry disposition. Being in their service seemed to you signing your life away. You were surprised to find he did not wish to take such things from you. He hired both you and Bronn to protect him, yes, but he would do the same for you both. You were an odd sort of family, but a family nonetheless. “Get settled and rested for the evening, we’ve had a long journey. We will reconvene later to discuss further plans.”
You nodded and left to your new chamber, one just across from Bronn and down the hall from Tyrion.
The trio was still not aware of the Red Viper slithering about the halls.
——————
Days passed with little to do. You hadn’t seen much of Tyrion. Since your arrival at King’s Landing your employer had become hand to his nephew king and married the pretty Stark girl you later learned was named Sansa. Still, you found ways to spend your time, keeping eyes and ears open for any useful information. You were particularly interested in Joffrey. It was astounding how a little boy could hold so much power, so much evil. You figured he inherited his terror from his mother.
Sansa was an interesting girl as well. Your heart broke for her. She was nothing if not resilient, staying loyal to her betrothed if only to keep herself alive. She was smart, you learned, but not useful when attempting to gather information. She did not deny her loyalty to Joffrey, even to those she liked. You were grateful that Tyrion stepped in to propose to the poor girl, if only to save her from the tyrant king. Both you and Shae kept close eyes on her. She was as smart and clever as Shae and yourself. You had a sneaking suspicion that she could be a close ally, if only your little family could get her away from the palace.
But today was different. Today you left your quarters to explore the palace a bit. You wanted to know what sort of battleground you were working with. It seemed surprising that a palace that was so heavily targeted was so...open. It seemed like light could illuminate any room. Even the gloomy and foreboding throne room could not escape a few beams of sunlight. If you didn’t despise every Lannister crawling about the palace, you had a mind to stay. The palace was only under the allusion of being warm and charming, the people who inhabited it ruined any chance of it being a lovely place. You noticed that the open windows and balconies made perfect outlooks should you need to eliminate a threat with one of your silver arrows.
But for now, the open windows became your place of peace as you ate a bowl of berries, just watching the rest of the sunrise. You saw the sun just barely grace the city with its light before you were called into Tyrion’s chambers. You arrived promptly, Bronn stumbling in a few minutes after you. You rolled your eyes at his lack of punctuality, which only earned you a playful nudge from the Lord of Highgarden.
“Behave you two. I swear I am dealing with children.” Shae huffed, but you could tell behind her sharp features was an air of mischief. Still, you straightened up and diverted your full attention to Tyrion.
“Well, much has happened. Prince Oberyn has arrived in The Capital. I visited him yesterday morning and he made it very clear that he wants to kill any Lannister that he sets his sights on. My father apparently ordered the death of his sister and her children. Our goal, for now, is to keep him happy, to keep him entertained. Bronn, your job will be to appear inconspicuous as you keep a watchful eye over my quarters, make sure no one goes in or out.” He ordered.
Shae huffed. “I’m perfectly capable of handling myself thank you.” She huffed.
“No one disputes that my dear.” Tyrion chuckled. You remember watching Shae stab a man she did not want for laying a finger on her. “I’m not worried about you. But my sister and my king nephew are very powerful. They will know how to use you against me.” He explained. Shae still was not pleased with the idea, but she relented.
“As for our hawk,” he turned to you and gave you a list with names you did not recognize, “you will present these girls to Prince Oberyn in my place. You will tell him that royal duties as the king’s new hand have prevented me from revisiting him, but you hope he enjoys the whores as a welcoming gift to King’s Landing.”
“Excuse me?!” You snapped your eyes narrowing in on your employer. “I am not a squire whose job is to bring in girls for spoiled princes!”
“Do not think of it as that.” Tyrion poured himself a glass of wine, knowing that he should chose his next words very carefully. He could feel your eyes burning into him. “Consider it a diplomatic mission. Besides, the prince wishes to meet you. The legends of the Silver Hawk have reached so far as Dorne and he is eager to make your acquaintance. This is the perfect opportunity for the both of you.”
You still weren’t pleased. “So I am now to serve as entertainment for the prince of Dorne.” You sighed and shook your head. “I am only staying long enough to bring him the girls, then I’m leaving.”
“Fine,” Tyrion relented. “But you will be cordial to the prince. Don’t be deceived by his charming words, he stabbed one of my cousins for a few unkind, brutish remarks. I don’t want to know what he’ll do when he hears your fire-laced words.” If it weren’t such a serious situation, Tyrion might have been amused to hear you use your wit against a prince, but the prince’s history with the Lannisters was anything but a joke.
“I’m sure she can handle herself. Hawks have talons after all.” Shae teased, but squeezed your arm affectionately. You offered a kind smile, but you still loathed this plan.
“That’s what I’m afraid of.” Tyrion rubbed his temple like the very thought of you getting into trouble was enough to send him over the edge.
You relented and chuckled a little before placing a hand on your friend’s shoulder. “I will be on my best behavior, but only because you will worry yourself ill.” You teased. “It can’t be too bad if I just deliver your message and leave. I better get going though. Can’t leave a prince waiting.” You snorted. As if you cared what a prince thought.
————————
Oberyn Martell lied in his temporary bed at the brothel, Ellaria Sand at his right, a blond haired boy on his left. He was the picture of lustful bliss, his golden chest glistened as the small rays of light entered the sinful den. But the prince was quiet deep in thought as he started out into the empty space before them. All the pleasure the brothel had to offer could not break his focus.
“Your thoughts are too loud, my prince.” Ellaria chided as she placed a kiss to his chest. “Tell me.”
Even then, Oberyn still could not break his thoughts of you, but he ran a hand through his paramour’s raven curls in acknowledgment. “I think I found our third partner.”

Winterfell’s Daughter. On Sansa Stark (part 15)
Tumblr media
I’ve previously written a series of essays that analyse Sansa Stark’s narrative arc in Game of Thrones - during season 1 (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6) and during season 2 (Part 7, Part 8, Part 9, Part 10) and now during season 3 (Part 11, Part 12, Part 13, Part 14).
As I’ve repeatedly stated, Sansa’s season 3 arc revolves around her political importance as Robb Stark’s heir apparent since her younger brothers Bran and Rickon are dead in the eyes of Westeros. Several major power players attempt to secure Sansa in order to control her claim to the North but it is the Lannisters who win that political game by wedding her to Tyrion after Petyr Baelish revealed the secret plan of the Tyrells to marry Sansa to Ser Loras. In this post, I’m going to take a closer look at how the wedding between Sansa and Tyrion plays out in episode 8.
BEFORE THE WEDDING
In my previous post, I criticized the manner in which the show frames Sansa’s reaction to the fact that she is forced to marry Tyrion Lannister - a marriage designed to exploit her status as Robb’s heir, a marriage predicated upon a plot to murder her brother and his pregnant wife so that Sansa will become the Key to the North in truth. It is a diabolical plan when you really think about it but the show mainly presents this whole thing from Tyrion’s perspective and when we are shown Sansa’s reactions, they are framed as shallow and intolerant (i.e. she’s not attracted to Tyrion because he’s a dwarf). The fact that she’s the victim in this scheme is effectively glossed over in episode 7 when Margaery attempts to console her.
Fortunately, the show turns out to be rather inconsistent in terms of how it frames Sansa’s reaction to this marriage in episode 8 where Tyrion comes to see her before the ceremony. The scene starts with a close-up of Sansa’s doll, the one that Ned gave her after he killed Lady. This doll may have functioned as a symbol of Ned’s guilt (x) and a reminder of Lady’s death in the beginning but after his death, it has come to mean something else for Sansa. Now it is the last tangible link to her father as well as a source of comfort to her (x). It is also a visual reminder to the audience that Sansa is still a child – and too young to get married! This is something that the show also explicitly states – both Shae and Tyrion call her a child within the context of marriage and sex, which really drives home how callous Tywin Lannister is in his exploitation of her claim to the North.
Tumblr media
After the close-up of the doll, the camera pans up and we see that the doll is placed on Sansa’s dressing table, next to the mirror wherein we see her reflection as her maids prepare her for her wedding. There’s a knock on the door and Tyrion enters the room, his reflection joining Sansa’s in the mirror. Sansa stands up to greet her intended while Shae remains at her side.
Sansa: You look very handsome, my lord.
Tyrion (sarcastically): Oh, yes. The husband of your dreams. But you do look glorious.
Sansa fidgets, wringing her hands nervously as Tyrion asks for a moment alone with her. The conversation that follows is very awkward, mostly because Tyrion repeatedly says the wrong things, then realizing his blunders and trying to backtrack.
Tumblr media
Tyrion: My lady, I want you to know. I didn’t ask for this.
Sansa (tonelessly): I hope I will not disappoint you, my lord.
Tyrion: No, don’t. You don’t have to speak to me as a prisoner. You won’t be a prisoner after today. You’ll be my wife.
This is a rather tactless utterance on Tyrion’s part. The fact remains that Sansa IS a prisoner – and the marriage is designed to keep her a permanent one. Tyrion may not have asked for this marriage but Sansa never gave her consent and she isn’t in a position to refuse. This is a FORCED marriage and she is not obligated to try to make the best of it or relieve Tyrion of his unease. However, she doesn’t dare to express her displeasure. Instead we see Sansa utilizing her trademark courtesy as a piece of emotional armour, keeping up a wall of icy politeness to keep Tyrion at arm’s length.
Tyrion: I suppose that is a different kind of prison.
So he does understand but then he immediately tries to forge a connection in another way, only to fail again.
Tumblr media
Tyrion: I just wanted to say… I’m just trying to say, very badly… I just… Just want to say I know how you feel.
This is just incredibly presumptuous of him. While he didn’t ask for the marriage, his feelings cannot be compared to Sansa’s. Her hopes for freedom have been crushed and she can only look forward to a lifelong imprisonment as the Lannisters attempt to steal her home. Tyrion is trying to make himself feel better because he knows that this marriage is designed to disenfranchise her while it is set up to benefit him. Thankfully, Sansa refuses to play along here.
Sansa: I doubt that very much my lord.
Tyrion: You’re right. I have no idea how you feel. And you have no idea how I feel.
It is clear that Sansa’s impassive demeanour makes Tyrion very uncomfortable, which makes him defensive. However, he is also very much aware of how wrong it is of Tywin to force Sansa into this marriage and he’s trying to make himself feel a bit better about the role he is to play in this farce.
The camera cuts to a close-up of Tyrion taking Sansa’s hand.
Tumblr media
Tyrion: But I promise you one thing, my lady. I won’t ever hurt you.
Finally, Tyrion strikes the right chord. He ought simply to have lead with an acknowledgement that she doesn’t want this marriage but that he’ll never hurt her. He takes her arm and they leave her chambers. Then the camera cuts to an exterior view of the Sept of Baelor where the wedding ceremony is to take place.
Tumblr media
What is notable about this shot is the fact that the cinematographer uses a frog’s eye perspective (from below), which makes the building loom threateningly over the spectator. This is a good example of how the camera work can be invested with emotion. The prospect of the wedding and the marriage is an oppressive threat for Sansa – so one can argue that the first view of the Sept of Baelor is set within her POV and the audience is invited to share it through the visual language.
THE CEREMONY
After a barbed conversation between Margaery and Cersei, the camera cuts to an exterior view of the doors to sept, shot from the frog’s eye perspective that lends the visuals an oppressive, even threatening quality. As the doors are slowly opening, Sansa walks into frame until she is framed by the door way.
Tumblr media
Then the camera cuts to an OTS (over the shoulder) shot with Sansa framed by the light from the open doorway and a pair of septas.
Tumblr media
She’s the visual focal point of this scene though the OTS shot locates the camera (and thus the eye of the audience) within Tyrion’s POV - since the OTS shot is a device often used to anchor a shot within the POV of a given character.
The camera gets to peek over the shoulder of our main talent and assumes a point of view like that of our talent. The camera (and therefore the viewing audience) sees directly what the main talent sees. Granted, the face of the actor is hidden from view, so we do not know what he or she may be thinking or feeling from this angle, but since the audience is placed into the shot from the character’s point-of-view (POV), the audience is encouraged to do the thinking and feeling for the character or as the character more directly. This is sort of an objective – subjective shot type where you get a privileged point of view from what is usually a more neutral camera angle. (x)
The OTS shot is followed by a close-up of Tyrion - this reaction shot also functions to make clear that we are dealing with Tyrion’s experience as Sansa enters the sept. We are still within his POV.
Tumblr media
A reaction shot is one of the basic units of film grammar and it is used as part of the non-verbal story-telling in order to express the inner life of the characters:
A reaction shot usually implies the display of some sort of emotion on the face of the actor being shown, and is thus most commonly a close-up shot (although a group of actors may be shown reacting together). A reaction shot is also generally bereft of dialogue, though this is not an absolute rule. Its main purpose is to show an emotional response to the immediately preceding action or words of another character in the scene, or to an event in the immediately preceding scene which may or may not involve another actor (e.g., an explosion, monster, empty room, etc.) (x)
There are a lot of reaction shots in this scene as we see the various characters respond to what is happening - and since this is a fairly long scene with very little dialogue, these shots are quite important in order to lend the proceedings emotional intensity.
After Sansa has moved into the sept, Joffrey approaches her with a swagger and a smirk. He can hardly contain his glee because he’s using this event to torture her emotionally. He reminds her that her father is gone and since the King is the Father of the Realm, he’ll give her away to her husband-to-be. The fact that Joffrey, who is responsible for Ned Stark’s death, is going to act as proxy for Sansa’s father during the ceremony just underscores how much of a farce this wedding is.
Tumblr media
Sansa reluctantly takes his arm and they begin to walk forward as the doors close behind them.
Tumblr media
The walk up to the altar takes a fair bit of time - from the moment that Sansa enters the sept and until she stands at the altar - is about 1:30 min long. That is, in fact, a very very long in terms of cinema and television. The moment of her approach to the altar is dragged out to an almost uncomfortable degree - and this underscores the awkward and uncomfortable nature of the event.
Joffrey and Sansa ascend the stairs to the altar and as they come abreast with Tyrion, Joffrey takes away the little stool that Tyrion was to use for the cloaking of the bride. Because Joffrey is a little shit who likes to humiliate people, especially the two he seems to hate the most: Tyrion and Sansa.
Tumblr media
After this little piece of assholery from Joffrey, Sansa and Tyrion face the alter and the septon. Once again we get an OTS shot, this time from the septon’s POV. This shot is angled from a bird’s eye perspective (from above), which is the opposite of the frog’s eye perspective - but the effect is the same. This angle lends the scene an oppressive quality, which helps to convey how unhappy event this wedding is for both Sansa and Tyrion.
Tumblr media
Septon: You may now cloak the bride and bring her under your protection.
Sansa turns her back on Tyrion so that he can put the Lannister cloak on her shoulders. However, Joffrey has removed the stool that was provided for this purpose. Tyrion shakes out the cloak and approaches Sansa. A wide-shot makes it clear that it is impossible for him to cloak her when she remains standing.
Tumblr media
Sansa remains standing for quite a bit of time while Tyrion struggles with the cloak. In fact, she remains standing for 10 whole seconds, which is a LONG time in terms of television. Long enough for the crowd to begin laughing – in fact, the scene includes a number of reaction shot of various people laughing.
Tumblr media
In the end, Tyrion has to ask Sansa to kneel, which she eventually does.
Tumblr media
This scene is somewhat different than the way it is portrayed in the books where Sansa refuses to kneel for the cloaking ceremony and Tyrion eventually has to resort to use Ser Dontos as a stool.
The bride's cloak he held was huge and heavy, crimson velvet richly worked with lions and bordered with gold satin and rubies. No one had thought to bring a stool, however, and Tyrion stood a foot and a half shorter than his bride. As he moved behind her, Sansa felt a sharp tug on her skirt. He wants me to kneel, she realized, blushing. She was mortified. It was not supposed to be this way. She had dreamed of her wedding a thousand times, and always she had pictured how her betrothed would stand behind her tall and strong, sweep the cloak of his protection over her shoulders, and tenderly kiss her cheek as he leaned forward to fasten the clasp. She felt another tug at her skirt, more insistent. I won't. Why should I spare his feelings, when no one cares about mine? (ASoS, Sansa III)
The question is: Why did the show make this change? I suspect that this change was made for practical reasons. Having Peter Dinklage balance on the back of another actor while putting an unwieldy piece of fabric on Sophie Turner seems a bit unsafe for him. He could easily fall and hurt himself in such a scenario. So the way the scene played out may just have been a pragmatic solution to a practical problem in order to prevent a situation where an actor could possibly be injured.
Many fans were very upset with this change and so was I at first because it seemed as if the writes removed what little agency Sansa had left in this situation. However, upon a re-watch I have changed my stance on this issue. Once again, I want to point out that Sansa remaining standing for the duration of 10 seconds is almost an eternity in terms of cinema! The fact that Tyrion literally has to beg her to kneel does highlight that she is quietly refusing to make things easy for him because she is being forced into this marriage.
Her action is a piece of quiet resistance on her part but it is very subtle – so subtle that it is very easy to overlook unless you pay attention and think critically about the way that this scene plays out.
youtube
(The cloaking scene begins at timestamp 6:20)
After the cloaking, Tyrion and Sansa face the High Septon who proceeds with the ceremony. We get a close-up of Sansa with a downcast gaze as sighs audibly.
Tumblr media
High Septon: We stand here in the sight of the Gods and to witness the union of man and wife. One flesh, one heart, one soul. Now and forever.
The scene ends here - and we don’t get to see the rest of the ceremony.
A CURIOUS OMISSION
Re-watching this scene, I noticed something odd. What is interesting here is the fact that the wedding ceremony doesn’t include the most important parts of the way that a wedding is conducted in the Light of the Seven:
The hand fasting.
Tumblr media
The recitation of the wedding vows. (Father, Smith, Warrior, Mother, Maiden, Crone, Stranger. I am hers/his and she/he is mine, from this day, until the end of my days)
Tumblr media
This omission becomes even more glaring in comparison with Edmure Tully’s wedding that takes place in the very next episode because this wedding scene includes ALL the ceremonial elements of a wedding performed in accordance with the religion of the Seven:
The cloaking of the bride.
The hand fasting where the hands of the couple is bound together.
The recitation of the traditional wedding vows.
It begs the question why the show omits these elements during the wedding of Sansa and Tyrion. One possibility is that the show didn’t want to depict two full wedding ceremonies back to back - but if that is the case, then why not show the full ceremony with Tyrion and Sansa since their wedding takes place in episode 8 and Edmure’s wedding takes place in episode 9. Yet it is Edmure’s wedding that shows all the elements of a Westerosi wedding in the Light of the Seven.
Furthermore, after investigating the issue further, it is worth noting that EVERY OTHER WEDDING performed in the Light of the Seven are all shown to include either the hand fasting and/or the reciting of the vows! Even in scenes where the wedding ceremony is truncated - like in the weddings of Margaery to first Joffrey and then to Tommen. Whether it is Robb/Talisa, Edmure/Roslin, Margaery/Joffrey, Margaery/Tommen or Rhaegar/Lyanna - the weddings always feature the hand fasting and/or the recitation of the wedding vows.
So I cannot help but conclude that the rather conspicuous omission of the two most binding elements of the wedding ceremony in Sansa and Tyrion’s wedding is not only by design but that it is also meaningful. Since their marriage is never consummated, its validity remains open to doubt and I wonder whether the omission of the crucial elements of a Westerosi wedding ceremony is a subtle hint that the marriage is a sham.
To be continued...

Jon x Sansa baby!! - The Queen of His Heart
Sansa has been Queen of many hearts. Many a man has drowned in her eyes. And many of these men already had women in their lives. Oh yes.
Sansa does away with her “foe” effortlessly: without even intending to or wanting it.
Examples:
Lyssa/Littlefinger: Hello wife. Let me throw you out the moon door. I love your niece.
Shae/Tyrion: Hello, love. I am your lion, but I also am wedded to the tall key to the north. Aaand I want to do her.
Myranda/Ramsey: Hello psycho of my heart. I need to make babies with this red-headed spitfire.
Yara/Theon (to a lesser extent): I feel this will be revisited in season 8. Hello sister. I am Reek. Cut to Sansa: Give me your hand and let’s jump together.
Now I’m not saying the men above loved her, but they did all evict women in their lives so that they could possess her. In Theon’s case he let Sansa accomplish what Yara could not – bring him back to himself.
Sansa somehow plays the role of the “Other Woman” in all these dynamics, only to become the “Only Woman” in the end. All without even wanting to. She is the uncontested Queen - in many ways.
There will be others in Season 8. Of that I am sure.
Jon/Sansa and Dany: It’s quite predictable really.
What seasons 6 & 7 showed me is that Sansa loves Jon, but she may not be physically attracted to him. The proof is in her questioning eyes and “Would that be so terrible?” She doesn’t know why Jon keeps her at a distance. Jon on the other hand feels immensely attracted to Sansa – as evidenced by how jumpy he gets whenever she initiates physical contact. He wants her in every way and he knows it.
I don’t think there will be much jealousy from Sansa towards Dany, at least not the romantic rival kind. She is likely to feel sad at the prospect of Jon leaving her, but not jealous that he has come back with another at his side. Because as always, Sansa is that “Other Woman”. Sansa will knock out the competition. And once more, it won’t be her doing the actual knocking out, it will be the man – Jon.
Note: I am almost completely sure that the part of Sansa that craves physical love will have to be re-awakened in order for her to completely “fall in love” with Jon. She loves him and trusts him, but this will deepen and widen to include physical want most likely on their wedding night. This is when she will truly realize why Jon married her. Intimacy basically.
Okay back to it -
Dany will be happy and content only to have Sansa come along and ruin it. And what will make Dany’s blood really curdle is Sansa herself, and how effortlessly people will flock to her. Sansa is no dragon. She’s not even magical. Unlike her siblings she doesn’t warg.
Sansa will be a gracious host, who sews, sings, eschews being Queen in favour of being the “Lady of Winterfell” and spending time with the women-folk. All of this while the war rages on.
Let’s not forget - there was a time when Cersei hand-picked Sansa herself to be the YMBQ.
Sansa is the embodiment of home and hearth and she has no desire to be anything else. Her confidence in herself and in her choices, and the effortless way she will pluck Jon from Dany’s side to her own, among many others, will prickle Dany to no end.
On Sansa not being “in-love” yet
Although Sansa loves Jon, the thought of being anyone’s wife again will most definitely make her slightly sick to the stomach. It’s her trigger, as Bran’s offhand comment showed us. That is where Sansa will start emotionally. But at the end of the day she trusts and loves Jon and knows he won’t hurt her.
So when the marriage alliance is decided, at first Sansa will appear to Dany at first as disgusted by the thought of marrying Jon, then once she has overcome her trigger she will appear somewhat ambivalent to marrying Jon (and this may all happen in 1 scene - possibly even no words. I’m just describing the motions she’ll likely go through), and as for the final act, well:
I am quite sure that Dany will be under the illusion that Jon and Sansa’s marriage is solely politically motivated. Jon will let Dany believe that he is tortured by having to marry his sister and disappointed that Dany turned out to be his aunt. He’s not mean, and there’s no reason to disabuse her of that belief if that’s what it takes to keep things status quo. Jon can be quite the sneaky sneak. But then something will happen, and Dany’s eyes will open.
I do not know what will cause it, only that whatever it is will leave all the characters with full knowledge of who Jon chooses and the depths to which he is willing to go to save his love. I can’t wait.
Thanks for reading!

Game of Thrones Rewatch 2.01
1. Remember that time Joffrey was going to kill a man with wine?
2. “You’re going to be bigger than the Hound but much better looking. This one doesn’t like me.” Because you’re kind of an ass to him, Tyrion. Funny though.
3. “OUT ALL OF YOU OUT”. I think it’s funny because there’s something distinctly sibling about this as opposed to simply her reacting to an enemy especially with Tyrion’s smirk.
4.”You love your children, it’s your one redeeming quality, that and your cheekbones.” I won’t lie, I’m looking forward to season 2 in large part because of Cersei and Tyrion’s interactions.
5. And yeah, so these people follow Daenerys because she has baby dragons? Like ... OK?
6. I was like, it’s annoying that my links never have subtitles for the Dothraki and I have to go off of memory but then I was like, well Daenerys stops speaking the language pretty soon anyway so it should be fine. But Khaleesi. Sure.
7. “He don’t like people messing with his daughters?” “He don’t like people messing with his wives.”
Tumblr media
8. Off topic but I really like the sound of fire crackling.
9. GILLY!
10. “The night is dark and full of terrors.” Ayyyyyyyeeeeeeeee. I do like Melisandre’s look in season 2 with all the red but she just becomes a deus ex machina basically and I got bored of her outside of Stannos.
11. Love the Lord of Light theme though, it’s such a great eerie/dark melody.
12.  The visuals on the beach are also great.
13. What IS the religion of the “Lord of Light” anyway. Blood magic is involved and bringing people back from the dead and what else?
14. Seriously, I do get lowkey hype with the Stark/North theme.
15. So Robb, you’re smart enough to deduce that you can’t leave Jaime with any of your bannermen because it’d go badly but you can’t see how marrying Talisa could be potentially problematic? My God.
16. What was Robb’s direwolf’s name?
17. “You’ve been defeated by a boy, held captive by a boy, perhaps you’ll be killed by a boy.”
“You think my father is going to negotiate with you? You don’t know him very well.”
“No, but he’s starting to know me.”
“Three victories don’t make you a conqueror.”
“It’s better than three defeats.”
Ugh, I LOVED him this season.
18. Shae and Tyrion really were cute.
19. What I like about Littlefinger’s interaction with Cersei is that it’s almost like he thought he was dealing with Varys or Tyrion or even Ned where they go round and round with their verbal sparring but it’s Cersei so when she’s bored she just goes to action.
20. “Power is power.” Cersei, I kind of love you for being so terrible.
21. “I will litter the south with Lannister debt.” These liiiiiiiiiiines.
22. Oh Theon, I almost feel bad for you.
23. But I don’t.
24. “You don’t want Balon Greyjoy for an ally.” AND GUESS WHAT, ROBB, CATELYN WAS RIGHT ABOUT THAT TOO. She spent this ENTIRE season giving you SOUND advice that you rejected and it NEVER worked out. UGH.
25. “And my grandfather’s stupidity in the field of battle...” Hey, Joffrey, why don’t you go then?
26. I love how frightened Cersei looks after slapping Joffrey. YOUR SON IS A MONSTER.
27. “Don’t call him Littlefinger, he doesn’t like it” now I’m just thinking of, “DON’T CALL HIM COTTONMOUTH.”
28. I remember being slightly underwhelmed by the premiere until the kingsguard started slaughtering Robert’s bastards and I was like, oh. The OST was good for that sequence.
29. And I like it didn’t end with Daenerys.

Because I am a glutton for punishment, I rewatched season 3.
The story so far: For those of you following along, I’ve been gearing up for watching the GoT I haven’t seen (the back half of season 5 and beyond) by rewatching the stuff I HAVE seen. It’s been... an experience. I’m coping with my fury by squeeing over the things I loved and foaming at the mouth over the things I hated.
The finale aired between my season 2 and 3 rewatch, and I am full of snark, but everything is also hilarious.
3x01
1. GHOST IS THE GOODEST BOY. Also everyone BE NICER TO SAM. Every time I see Kit and Rose together on screen I go, “Awww they’re gonna be married.” So happy this show brought them together.
2. Ciarán Hinds as Mande Rayder was SUCH epic good casting. I want to watch all of Rome now.
3. Davos is a salty old cat with nine lives and I was SO happy to see him alive. And then he RISKS ONE OF THEM being loyal to Stannis. That’s some Ned Stark levels of honor.
4. Michael McElhatton’s voice is so amazingly creepy I love and hate it all at the same time.
5. That first scene we get with Tyrion and Tywin is A LOT. Tyrion just wants a little bit of recognition and it’s SO SAD. (Also how did Tywin have the lions put up in his office so soon? SO EXTRA.) And wtf is up with Tywin intimating that Tyrion might be a bastard? So glad they dropped that. Who ended up Lord of Casterly Rock though? DOes AnYoNE EveN CaRE?
6. Sansa and Shae playing the game with the ships is... so cute. We overly imaginative people have all had that friend like Shae who’s like WHAT IS THE POINT OF PRETENDING.
7. Ok teenage Drogon cooking his food in midair before eating it was pretty cool.
8. Is that the Stranger on the wall of the building where Margaery talks to the orphans? In the middle of the seven pointed star? It looks CREEPY.
9. The epic Queen-off between Margaery and Cersei IS ON. (For the record Cersei’s armor dress is FANTASTIC.) Also, Jack Gleeson saying “charitable” like it’s a word in a foreign language he’s never heard before is GREAT.
10. You can see the seeds of Missandei being a fantastic diplomat for Queen Daenerys. :( Also, I wonder if Jorah knows she speaks Valyrian as he watched all of this unfold...
3x02
1. I wonder if what Talisa says about how Westerosi are viewed across the narrow sea, as barbarians who smell, is accurate. It makes sense...
2. OH SHIT THEON GETTING TORTURED IS IN THIS EPISODE I WAS NOT READY
3. Latest on a List of insults Brienne puts up with from Jaime: “giant towheaded plank.” He is such a shit. And the way he SWITCHES on a dime from so obviously baiting her to being DEAD serious with the “we don’t get to choose who we love” line... so very him.
4. Sansa and the Tyrells! Those gardens are SO incredibly pretty, and Diana Rigg is SO GOOD as Olenna. May I have half her wit when I’m her age. Getting info out of Sansa on Joffrey was SMART.
5. I love that we get a sense that there are different cultures and languages North of the Wall.
6. HOLY SHIT HI MACKENZIE CROOK I FORGOT YOU WERE IN THIS YOU ADORABLE STRING BEAN.
7. Reeeeeds! Jojen and Mira were so exciting when we first met them...
8. BROTHERHOOOOOD Without Banners SO COOL. And underused.
9. Jaime and Brienne are AT A BRIDGE and NOTHING IS OK enjoy the hand while you have it ,Jaime my love.
3x03
1. Lannister family musical chairs is SO GREAT and Tyrion and Cersei have SUCH BITCHY FACES AT EACH OTHER.
2. They tell Chuck Norris jokes about Brynden the Blackfish, don’t they.
3. Stannis: Men have been trying to kill me for years. Me: Well maybe they need to send a WOMAN TO DO IT. (yeeeeaaaaah Brienne)
4. Dany is a woman with a plan and watching Jorah and Ser Barristan freak out about her possibly giving up one of her dragons is kind of funny.
5. I had forgotten how COMMITTED Ramsay is to his “helping Theon” ruse.” Fuuuuuck.
6. Jaime losing his hand DOES NOT GET ANY EASIER TO WATCH.
3x04
1. Jaime Lannister and the No Good Very Bad Deathwish huuuurts meee. It’s so good Brienne was around.
2. Varys and the sorcerer in a box.... SO CREEPY. Do we ever get resolution on that?? Anyway it made me flat out terrified of the implacability of Varys’ revenge at the time, and Conleth Hill PLAYS IT.
3. The Sept is SO PRETTY way to go CGI folks. That whole scene is just GORGEOUS with the light framing Margaery and Joffrey and Cersei moving in and out of shadow...
4. Theon’s “all he had to do was be” re: Robb hit me RIGHT IN THE FEELS also wow show Theon was really Gay For Robb and you will not convince me otherwise. (Watching him pour his heart out to Ramsay makes me physically ill... whYyYYy am I sober...)
5. I still maintain that show Brienne is WAAAAAY meaner than book Brienne about Jaime’s “leave me alone I’m dying” phase in ways that are really out of character and I HATE IT. Also losing a HAND is not “a little bit of misfortune.” And SHE WOULD UNDERSTAND THAT.
6. Cersei being like “I’ve been listening more than your sons” to Tywin. And Tywin being an ASSHOLE in response instead of FUCKING TELLING HER HOW TO DO BETTER with Joffrey makes me so angry.
7. “If Robb Stark falls Sansa Stark is the key to the North” YOU DON’T SAY VARYS
8. I am... sadder than I remember being about Jeor Mormont dying.
9. I. Like. Anguy. What HAPPENED to him? Also Beric is... intense, but I love him. (And Thoros was IN THE KEEP the day the baby Targaryens died?)
10. And ARYA GETTING TO TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT MYCAH TO ADULTS WHO LISTEN YES GOOD.
11. Dany hands that Dragon over COOL AS A CUCUMBER WHAT A QUEEN and theN the reveal that she SPEAKS FLUENT VALYRIAN AND DRACARYS AND I THINK I LOVE HER EVEN MORE OUT OF SPITE THIS TIME
3x05
1. Sandor Clegane trying to CHOP HIS OWN WOODEN SHIELD OFF HIS ARM because it’s on fire... wow. That whole scene is IMPRESSIVE. That was a fight that was TRIGGERY AS FUCK for him with all the fire and he still came out on top.
2. This is the episode where Jon and Jaime both get baths! Jon’s was a lot more fun. He got to have sex first. Jaime’s is preceded by being like “take any more of my arm than you have to and die” to Qyburn and a lot of screaming.
3. I CAN BE YOUR FAMILY ALSHAKDHSAG I AM SO ANGRY ARYA AND GENDRY DON’T END UP IN THE SAME PLACE. IT DIDN’T HAVE TO BE SCHMOOPY IT JUST NEEDED TO BE TOGETHER.
4. Every time I see Catelyn looking empty and far away in these scenes I see the Lady Stoneheart that could have been.
5. ROBB DON’T TRY TO BE YOUR DAD LISTEN TO YOUR MOM AND WIFE AND UNCLE. UGH RICHARD’S ACTING IN THAT EXECUTION SCENE THOUGH IT HURTS ME.
6. Beric Dondarion’s voice is amazing. I’m noticing voices more this time around...
7. Shireen Baratheon! What a precious little Princess! Her friendship with Davos is the best thing ever and SHE DESERVED BETTER.
8. Jaime and Brienne in the bath is funny when Jaime’s a shit until it gets very very serious and everything hurts and both of them are better actors than this show deserved. Jaime remembering URGING AERYS TO SURRENDER PEACEFULLY MAKES WHAT HAPPENS IN THE END HURT. He... hasn’t told that story to many people in its entirety and aaaaahhhh my feelings and him telling Brienne MY NAME IS JAIME I CANNOT WITH THEM.
9. Grey Worm is so handsome, and the more I see of Jacob Anderson in the behind the scenes stuff the more awesome he gets.
10. Ugh Cersei my love don’t be so smug about Tyrion and Sansa (Also Tyrion BRINGING UP TYSHA HOLY SHIT I FORGOT) Cersei and Tyrion both look so miserable at the end of that scene I just want to FUCKING THROTTLE TYWIN. Which is how I felt in the books here so KUDOS TO ALL INVOLVED.
3x06
1. I LOVE that we get to hear the Faith of the Seven’s version of “Jesus loves me” and I love that it’s Sam who sings it.
2. Meera holding Jojen while he has his vision/seizure like she’s done it a thousand times before... so sweet. I love that taking care of those who need it is just... part of who she is, and we need more people who are caring AND badass.
3. I forgot that Arya got an archery lesson from Anguy and I love it.
4. Melisandre being like WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU RAISED BERIC SIX TIMES to Thoros is great. Who knows what any of that means now but in the moment wow. Also WTF I FORGOT THEY GAVE GENDRY TO MELISANDRE
5. Ygritte asking Jon if he’s staring at her ass while climbing is so great. Way to know how good you look, girl!
6. Everyone at Riverrun: GROW UP EDMURE.
7. Jaime Being like BRIENNE DO NOT STAB BOLTON I GOT THIS = friendship goals
8. Cersei and Tyrion talking about their impending miserable marriages and not being entirely awful to each other gives me a bit of joy even as I weep for all of them.
9. I laughed for a long time at Varys line calling the Iron Throne “The Lysa Arryn of chairs.”
10. That last shot of Jon and Ygritte kissing is SO PRETTY. Everything at the top of the wall is, really.
3x07: GET BEHIND ME WENCH DON’T YOU SEE THE BEAR
1. Oh GRRM wrote this one. Cool.
2. Brynden Tully calling Walder Frey a wet shit is delightful. I love him so.
3. Do we ever find out if Talisa was telling the truth about writing to her mother? Or any sort of mention of her again since she’s nobility in Volantis and it might be a thing that she got murdered? No?
4. TORMUND TALKING ABOUT FOREPLAY IS HYSTERICAL HE IS THE BOYFRIEND BRIENNE DESERVES
5. Protective Dragons are Protective
6. Please TAKE OUR SHIP AND OUR GOLD AND GET THE FUCK OUT OF ESSOS: the Yunkai emissary, basically.
7. Poor Gendry. What a way to find out your dad was King Robert... Melisandre has a flair for the dramatic.
8. Jaime is bad at goodbyes especially when Brienne called him Ser Jaime instead of Kingslayer.
9. Ygritte threatening to blacken Jon’s eye if he tears her hypothetical silk dress.. THIS is how you write a badass girl who also likes pretty things.
10. Jaime jumping into that ring and continuing to throw his influence around for Brienne... yes good. He’s lucky that bear didn’t get his FOOT TOO though. And that last “Sorry about the Sapphires” to Locke as he’s leaving.... he just can’t help himself he HAS TO POKE PEOPLE VERBALLY EVEN WHEN IT’S DANGEROUS.
3x08: the One with the Other Other Wedding
1. Travels with Sandor and Arya is such a good show.
2. Davos trying to read is SO CUTE. And Stannis coming to Davos for advice and free him says a lot about a Stannis’ character at this point in the show.
3. Hey! It’s the first Daario!
4. Tyrion tried so hard to be kind. I’m glad he and Sansa seem to end on good terms.
5. Cersei being like “I see how you are trying to be my friend and I want NONE OF IT” to Margaery and then telling the story of house Reyne is a power move.
6. Joffrey moving Tyrion’s step stool at the wedding  was a DICK MOVE but I love the look Tywin gives people who are laughing. (And Tyrion And Sansa making the best of a bad situation and Sansa weakly smiling at him when he makes the the joke about the wine before the ceremony is sweet)
7. NOBODY CARES WHAT YOUR FATHER ONCE TOLD YOU YES CERSEI MY QUEEN 👑
8. Tyrion pretending to be drunker than he was to get him and Sansa out of that room and away from Joffrey and the bedding ceremony is SO SAD but smart.
9. Sam cooing and fussing over that baby is the sweetest thing ever.
10. SAM KILLING THAT WHITE WALKER IS LIKE NEVILLE KILLING NAGINI CHANGE MY MIND WAIT YOU CANNOT HE’S SO BRAVE AND I LOVE HIM
3x09: The Rains of MY TEARS ABOUT THE RED WEDDING
I have a RUM and coke ready to go let’s do this
1. Robb asking Catelyn’s advice after he didn’t listen toher about Theon and the Ironborn :...(
2. Those POOR FREY GIRLS are they ok? I hope Arya didn’t kill any of them since they didn’t ask to be Walder the Worst’s daughters and granddaughters.
3. Grey Worm stepping into a leadership role ❤️
4. So... was Castle Black abandoned at the END of Jahaerys’ reign? I feel like the castles were mostly manned at the beginning of his reign? Gotta check on that.
5. In which Jon and Arya are both concerned about innocent small folk.
6. I FORGOT HOW CLOSE ARYA GETS TO THE TWINS
7. I ALSO FORGOT HOW CLOSE BRAN AND RICKON GOT TO JON. And... So much warging and direwolf action!
8. Daario Grey Worm And Jorah make a badass team gotta say.
9. HOLY SHIT MY WIFE JUST POINTED OUT THAT ROSLIN IS ANNE FROM THE MUSKETEERS. I knew I loved that face in a way I hadn’t before when she took off that veil!
10. Byyyyyyeeee Shaggy and Rickon and Osha!
11. Robb and Talisa decided to name the baby Eddard  right before shit went down and I am NOT OK.
12. Fuck me that song HERE WE GO FOLKS.
13. Ugh Catelyn figured out what was about to happen right before. I had forgotten that. All the things that weren’t ok any of the other times are still not ok.
14. GREYWIND NO and now the crying
15. Catelyn with her knife to that Frey girl’s throat is so desperately sad Michelle Fairley BROUGHT IT and I hate everything
3x10: Of Course I’m watching this right after the Red Wedding what do you suggest I do instead? Sit on the couch and cry? (Because that’s definitely what I was gonna do if I didn’t start the next one.)
1. I never noticed Sandor picking up the FREY banner very intentionally smart man. Which I am choosing to focus on because...
2. if I never see Robb’s body with Greywind’s head again it will be too soon.
3. Tyrion and Sansa talking about how to get back at people who laugh at them like they’re friends ❤️❤️❤️
4. Any man who must say I am the king is no true king TELL IT LIKE IT IS TYWIN.
5. Tywin: 1 Joffrey: -15 I’ve been waiting for that throwdown for a while now.
6. Tywin really believes what he’s saying about putting family first. And that STORY ABOUT NEARLY DROWNING TYRION OMG.
7. Ugh Sansa knooooows about the RW and Tyrion just walks away because he’s the last “family” she wants to see.
8. Scary stories at the Night Fort! Like the Rat King... Bran’s a good ghost story teller.
9. WHAT A TRANSITION TO WALDER FREY after all that talk of guest right
10. Can’t wait for dogs to eat Ramsay because Theon’s pleas to be killed turns my stomach and make me see red all at once LEAVE HIM ALONE YOU BASTARD
11. Oh jeez this is where we get the Reek thing in the show. Theon says his own name twice before Ramsay hurts him enough he calls himself Reek and Alfie is SO GOOD I HATE IT
12. Oh right Sam & Co are in the Nightfort too!
13. Yarra not being ok with Balon abandoning Theon GIVES ME LIFE. She’s just so disgusted with her dad AS SHE SHOULD BE.
14. Greyjoys DO NOT DO AS THEY ARE TOLD and I love Yarra.
15. Don’t talk too much shit about highborns Gendry You’re gonna be one.
16. Varys and Shae talking is SO INTERESTING. I... think Varys has some points, and I think she should have listened, taken the diamonds, and peaced out of King’s Landing.
17. That Cersei and Tyrion scene where they talk about her children keeping her alive HURTS MY SOUL SO MUCH.
18. Arya stabbing the fuck out of that Frey bragging about sewing Greywind’s head on gives me SO MUCH SATISFACTION. Also Sandor being like “TELL ME next time we’re gonna do murder, ok kid?” Is THE BEST.
19. I love that Davos is the one we get to see reading the letter Maester Aemon writes.
20. DAVOS MAKES A CHOICE AND IT’S THE RIGHT ONE. Do you know how to swim?? No. ... Don’t fall out. 😂
21. Jaime is hoooooome in King’s Lannister and I have Lannister feels spilling ALL OVER THE PLACE.
22. Oh right and Dany has a whole bunch of people calling her mom in whatever variety of Valyrian they speak in Yunkai. That was a thing.
