okay apparently this has confused some people (read: one unrelentingly obnoxious person) so let me explain.

there are many things online that make me lose my temper, many of which are nitpicky and stupid. i have a quick temper and i prefer not to be constantly angry about niche online bullshit when most of the involved people are perfectly harmless. so i nip it in the bud when it starts to happen.

i prefer to lock reblogs rather than delete posts because this prevents more people from clowning directly on words that i have said. it bothers me to have my posts circulating beyond my control with no way to see where they go or how people respond to them.

*Why do this in private? There are a number of reasons: the first, and most relevant, that it means other people aren't going to randomly jump in and change the subject, so we can have an actual conversation rather than something that comes over more like a random accusation I may not fully understand out of the blue. Secondly, I have a solid handful of followers that I expect would probably defend me, and you don't need people jumping down your throat for "attacking" a person they like, especially if you're right but even if I think you're wrong. I also don't want to deal with that. Finally, I don't like being stuck between trying to understand more and feeling like I have to "save face" because the latter is bad for actually learning and growing as a person. I - of course - still do my best to learn in public, but without the pressure of a significant amount of outside observers it's easier for me to form an initial response and have a normal conversation. Today is Transgender Day of Visibility.

I know I’ve never been too vocal about my identity. And as such, I don’t really consider myself “visible”. But the hard, cold truth is that there is no such thing as a “completely stealth” trans person. None of us really go unseen. We might be made invisible more often than not, but our identity is something we cannot erase. Some of us are targeted because of who we are. Mocked, insulted, harrassed, beaten, injured, raped, murdered.

We have to remind ourselves of who we are, and find pride in our identity. What helped me a lot was reading other people’s stories online. It helped me relate and gave me keys to understand who I am. I will always feel thankful for anyone who puts their story out there, who is willing to share what they went through themselves.

I will try as best as I can to share some of mine today.

For a long time, I “didn’t want” to be trans. I slowly came to learn that something was up with me. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t understand gender, why boys had to be a certain way, and girls another. Yet, when I learned about transidentity, I didn’t want it to apply to me. I thought that being transgender came with a lot of hardships, which I wasn’t willing to go through. Yet I slowly realized that this wasn’t something I could simply ignore. This was an inherent part of who I was. No matter how hard I tried to escape dysphoria, it only came back more and more violently each time. Dysphoria threw at me body image issues, self-hatred, anxiety, depressive thoughts, and many more awful things. For the longest time, I was unable to leave any “traces” of myself. Up until a few years ago, I refused to take pictures, even with loved ones. I threw away all of my drawings. I refused to buy myself clothes I liked. I went through disordered eating behaviors, thinking it would help me like my body more. I was unable to open up to anyone about the way I felt inside my body. I always tried to please others in relationships, and never really put my comfort first. I was terrified to talk to people about my preferred pronouns, because I didn’t want to bother them with that. To this day, I still have a lot of trouble with some of these things. When I grew up, the internet was a good escape for me. It was a place where people didn’t have to see me physically, and therefore had to go by the pronouns I was using for myself. But, if at first I felt like it was a safe place, it soon became a platform for an onslaught of hate against me. Because I was trans. People would make me go on about my gender, ask tons of uncomfortable questions, make me tell them my birth gender, my birth name, show them what I looked like. And at first I was patient. I understood that you can’t really guess how to behave with a trans person if you’ve never met one before. But I soon learned that they didn’t even deserve my patience. They were ill-intentioned. And before I knew it, I was humiliated, mocked. And, of course, misgendered… by people who hadn’t even known me as my assigned at birth gender. The least I can say is that it fucked me up. People’s selfishness, intolerance, and morbid fascination for everything outside of the norm… really hurt me deep. Today, I honestly feel like my youth was robbed away from me. Living in that dark closet was fucking hell. And only now that I’m begining to open the door, and emerge little by little, I am truly able to appreciate life. I earnestly want to live on.

This year, I am finally taking clear steps in my transition. I am slowly coming out to more and more people that are dear to me. There are still many challenges ahead that await me, but I will tackle them as I need to. I am currently making plans for a surgery, and have much more ahead of me to finally feel right in my flesh.

When you’re trans, it sometimes feels like waking up in the morning, in itself, is a political act. And that’s what it really is when you remind yourself how poorly society accepts our hardships. But I will keep waking up, and I will keep living. I am not doing it for people who don’t understand or who are disgusted by me. They’ll call me queer, but to me, they are the queer ones. Their bigotry and self-entitlement is much stranger than transitioning could ever be.

Nobody has to love themselves. It’s alright if you are unable to love yourself. But you must respect yourself, as you should respect anyone. Don’t sabotage yourself. You deserve to live, and you deserve to live with dignity.

We are so much more than insults and marks of hatred. We, trans people, are a knife cutting deep into the skin of gender roles, homophobia, body shaming, and many other social constructs. Our cause is not just a fight for our rights and our freedom, it’s so much more than that.

Transitioning can be terrifying, especially when everything is going against you. But you are the only one who knows who you are, and you are the only one who should rule your body. Please stay safe and be gentle to yourself, because you deserve no less than your happiness.

i know they exist, but i haven't been able to find any posts about writing image ID's while searching (tumblr's search function is, as always, busted), so i'm going to try my best to give folks a few pointers about writing them. full disclaimer that i am not visually impaired, nor do i use a screenreader, so let me know if anything here needs to be changed, and please feel free to add on if you are vi!

- first off, do not alter the text of an image description. do not italicize/bold it, do not make it a different color, do not make the text any smaller, and do not put it in a difficult to read font. all of these things still make it inaccessible/hard to read. these don't typically interfere with a screenreader, but not all visually impaired people use them.

- keep the text alongside the image, rather than under a cut or below a long caption. it makes it easier to access quickly, and if you delete your blog/change your url, people will not be able to access the text under the cut from a reblog.

- keep the description objective. do not say things a long the lines of "a beautiful painting" or "a funny meme". rather, use descriptive, objective words ("an intricate oil painting", for example).

- something is better than nothing. two sentences summarizing your image is leagues better than leaving it blank. it doesn't have to be a grand, overtly detailed description. i personally can't always write detailed descriptions, due to fatigue and other disabilities. again, something is better than nothing!

- from my knowledge, while details are good, it isn't always necessary to describe every single detail of a post, especially in more detailed pictures. describe what's important, should be conveyed, or is notable about the picture (colors, lighting, poses, actions, characters, dialogue, scenery, etc.). it's good to be detailed and convey the core ideas, but it doesn't have to pick apart every single bit.

- from my knowledge, it's best to try and avoid breaking the description up into paragraphs. when it comes to some screenreaders, people will have to tap on each individual paragraph. instead, it's usually better to divide descriptions of multiple photos in a post with a / or by simply saying "the first image, the second image, etc".

- a description should not be put exclusively in alt text. tumblrs alt text feature doesn't always function well, and again, not all visually impaired people use screenreaders. without a description outside of the image, people will frequently not be able to access it.

- when adding an id in alt text, you do not need to start it with "id" or "an image of", but rather with what type of image it is (ie. a painting, a photograph, etc.). from my knowledge, screenreaders will automatically start with saying it is an image

- if someone writes a description for your post, PLEASE add the id to your ORIGINAL post. we WANT you to do that. if you do, then people finding the post in the tags will see the accessible version. adding it in reblogs alone means that there are going to be many versions of the post without the description. often times, people writing descriptions do not care about credit (though i suppose it doesn't hurt), we just want your post to be more accessible.

- don't be afraid to ask for someone to write a description for you, if you can't do it yourself. you can also ask folks more used to writing them to help you get started, and feel free to model your id's after someone elses. it's okay! please do it!

if you dislike your works being recc'd on tiktok without your permission could you maybe stop reblogging reposted art? a lot of the art reblogged here is without the permission of the artist. i don't think it's okay to only have the artist's twitter handle in the caption when a lot of the time in their bio they say not to :/

Are there certain posts you’re talking about or do you mean in general? If you know of ones that I’ve reblogged that were reposted then can you please tell me which ones so I can delete them?

I honestly do try my best to make sure fanart I reblog is either from the artist or has the artist’s permission (checking for a watermark or signature, checking op’s blog, checking the tags, etc) but sometimes things slip through without meaning to. I know this site has a real reposting problem (from artists on tumblr but esp artists on Twitter) so I really do try to be careful with fanart.

If I’ve reblogged any reposted art then just let me know and I’ll be happy to delete those posts.

While I was cleaning, I found the tiny Pokemon comic that got me ostracized in front of my entire band class back in 6th or 7th grade. It fell off my music stand and landed on the floor, and when one of my regular bullies saw it, he was able to start a chain reaction that made the entire class break into hideous laughter at my expense. Even the teacher struggled to keep it in.

Nowadays Pikachu is so popular, I can't help but get a little suspicious when people who didn't get bullied for their special interests claim to like Pokemon.

But that happened in the early 2000's; post-Pokemania, so maybe things are different now?

We don't share people's beautiful faces so that you can reblog them to add sexual comments or sexual tags. It's gross to be doing that without people's consent.

Fat people, disabled people, trans people, and people of color are not fetishes or sex objects and you need to stop acting like they are. These selfies are not here for your sexual enjoyment, and these people don't exist for your pleasure.

But for anyone who can't see this, it's a selfie of a fat disabled person sent to us on Fatspo Friday that was reblogged by casalesposinhapelada with the caption deleted and replaced to a link labeled "perverted nikki lookup fuck right here" and tagged with things like "sensual," "ass like that," "thongs," a misspelling of what I assume was supposed to be "lingerie," and a few completely random tags like "trucker hat" and "pretty black women" even though the picture is of a white person.

Seriously, I better not see more of this.
