I’m the Anon who has the mom with weird skating opinions. She liked Bock because she is into the time symbolism thing and doesn’t care if they don’t skate as much. She liked the tension in dance with the “girl in pink and the guy who was in like pink and gray?” and how it was “wuthering heightsy” (before I explained to her that it was, in fact, Wuthering Heights). I had to ask her about LaLa specifically, which I did by describing their costumes after how she talked about CPom and G/P, and she just said “their skating was so beautiful I didn’t even notice what they wore.” She hates the ‘80s theme for the RD so she liked L/B because it wasn’t typical 80s music (though she did do some of the Thriller dance moves along with LaLa when she watched them—the rest she just sort of wrinkled her nose at). She felt like the Italians were “not cohesive” in their FD but stopped to make me watch them do the Farrucas lift.
For reference, she was a huge Torvill and Dean fan back in the 1980s. I remember her preferring Krylova and Ovsyannikov to Grishuk and Platov. She rooted for Oksana Baiul over Nancy Kerrigan. For ice dance, she prefers the FD to anything else. I also remember her really liking early Davis and White (Eleanor Rigby and Samson and Delilah) over Belbin and Agosto, but she always loved Virtue and Moir (especially Umbrellas and Mahler). She was usually underwhelmed by P/C but liked G/P’s Vincent program (but was bitchy about Piper’s costume before she realized what the program was).
ohh so she knows and used to follow skating 💙 i like when people have eclectic and interesting opinions. i’m team Oksana (over Nancy) too, and VM of course lol i haven’t gotten to Krylova and Ovsyannikov and Grishuk and Platov to know what that means yet, but i look forward to seeing what your mom might see in one over the other☺️

Stepanova & Bukin: “We Have Been Together For So Long That We Have Already Become Family”
Tumblr media
Do you watch ice dance competitions of the past?
Alexandra: Yes, especially when the compulsory dance for the season is announced. We then go back to the roots - Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, Oksana Grishuk and Evgeni Platov...
Ivan: Tatiana Navka and Roman Kostomarov.
Alexandra: Yes, we also watched their dance when we had the tango.
Ivan: We return to the days when my dad skated, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean. It is interesting to watch, because there was a great emphasis on compulsory dance during that time.
So you don’t watch it for your own interest, just out of necessity?
Alexandra: It’s not possible for me to sit down and review the entire Grand Prix series. We do not like every program, and many we do not like in terms of skating. We can enjoy some of our favorite pairs, but not everyone.
What are your favorite programs of the past decade?
Alexandra: Among ours, the free dance this season, and last year’s tango.
Ivan: I like Virtue and Moir’s Moulin Rouge. I think it’s an incredible program, amazingly executed.
Alexandra: Yes, I absolutely agree. This is one of our favorite programs.
Tumblr media
In your opinion, how has your sport changed over time?
Ivan: The dances have become more complicated. The judging system has changed, the compulsory dance has been removed. This dance was moved into the short, and it became more interesting for the audience. Everyone began to skate different programs but as for free dances, I like how it was a long time ago. People really skated free dances, did not worry too much about particular elements. They just created the dance and it was very cool.
Alexandra: This has some truth, but there are also quite interesting programs today. The rules are getting complicated, and something new is constantly being invented. It becomes more interesting to watch dances. Previously, there were two compulsory step sequences. Now, they have been abandoned and everything has changed. There is more space for creativity.
What do you do to distract yourself from figure skating?
Alexandra: It seems to me that we don’t distract ourselves from figure skating.
Ivan: No, this does not happen. We rest on weekends to gain strength for the next week’s training.
Alexandra: Perhaps, I just don’t talk about figure skating.
Ivan: Yes, me too.
Did you give each other presents on New Year?
Ivan: Of course! This is a family holiday, and we have been together for so long that we have already become family.
Alexandra: Vanya gave me the sunglasses that I’ve wanted for a long time. It’s very cool when someone gives you what you want, although only close ones can do that.
You have been skating together for 13 years. What is the secret of such longevity?
Alexandra: The coaches passed that on to us from childhood. It comes from the people who take care of us.
Ivan: We have great respect for each other. When you care deeply about a person, you don’t want any scandals.

Pasha Grishuk hands down is one of the biggest trainwrecks in skating. Between her drama with Usova/Zhulin, the fact that she and Evgeny Platov hated each other (she literally told him when on the Nagano podium he only contributed 20% to their OGM), her weird obsession w/being compared to Oksana Baiul, how much her coaches (Dubova, Linichuk, etc) trashed talked her, her name change, and the infamous Mr. President fluff piece. She is a messy LEGEND and truly deserves a lifetime movie.
OK, you have GOT to tell me more about the name changes and the infamous Mr. President fluff piece LOL, that sounds insane. I just recently told @macaroni-rascal that I have no idea why they keep making movies about Torvill and Dean and about the usual boring af skating tropes (yet another singles skating princess that gets injured and switches to pairs since it’s so much easier and is stuck with skating with a bad boy hockey player that was also injured and turns into a pairs skaters because it takes no skill whatsoever to skate pairs apparently) when they have so much better material for a Dynasty kind of show…

100 Memorable Skating Programs - 11-15
11. Jeremy Abbott "Exogenesis" (Jeremy Abbott and Yuka Sato) Nationals 2012 - I have such a weakness for "Exogenesis" programs; it's a great piece to skate to! Ashley Wagner's and Guignard/Fabbri's versions are among my favorites, but the best and most definitive "Exogenesis" program is undoubtedly Jeremy's. That moment near the end when is briefly pauses during footwork catches my breath every time.
youtube
12. Vanessa James/Morgan Cipres "Sound of Silence" (John Kerr and Silvia Fontana) 2017 Euros - This program gives me the chills almost every time I watch it. It's just so raw and powerful and modern and...and...well, it's just amazing, especially this almost perfect performance of it, which earned them the bronze at Europeans. Definitely one of my favorite pairs programs ever.
youtube
13. Michelle Kwan "Salome" (Lori Nichol) 1996 Worlds - As you can imagine, it was tough to pick a favorite program of someone like Michelle who had so many amazing performances, but when I think Michelle Kwan, my mind immediately pictures her in that gorgeous dark purple costume, skating her incredible long program to "Salome" and clinching the world title, the first of many to come.
youtube
14. Oksana Grishuk/Evgeni Platov "The Feeling Begins" 1997 Worlds - I'm pretty sure this is the program (along with Krylova/Ovsiannikov's "Masquerade Waltz") that turned me into an ice dance fan. I don't remember being very interested beforehand, but there was something about this program that grabbed my attention and wouldn't let go. That sliding move they repeat twice near the end is still one of the coolest things I've ever seen in figure skating!
youtube
15. Evgenia Medvedeva "W.E" (Ilia Averbukh and Igor Strelkin) 2016 Worlds - It isn't often that I fall in love with someone's skating during their first senior year, but it happened with Evgenia, largely due to the brilliance of this program. The opening when she covers and uncovers her ears as the music changes volume is probably my all-time favorite opening.

Time to spill some more tea!

Natalia Bestemianova and Andrei Bukin - 1988 Olympic Ice Dance Champions
Bestemianova — married to skater Igor Bobrin
Bukin — formerly married to former ice dancing partner Olga Abankina, current partner is former ice dancer Elena Vasiuk (I'm considering this a de facto marriage in my statistics, okay)
Marina Klimova and Sergei Ponomarenko - 1992 Olympic Ice Dance Champions
MARRIED
Oksana Grishuk and Evgeny Platov - 1994 and 1998 Olympic Ice Dance Champions
Grishuk — no records of marriage or de facto relationships

Kostomarov — formerly married to skater Julia Lautowa, married to ice dancer Oksana Domnina
Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir - 2010 and 2018 Olympic Ice Dance Champions
Who TF knows?
Meryl Davis and Charlie White - 2014 Olympic Ice Dance ‘Champions’
Davis — currently engaged to skater and ice dancer Fedor Andreev (I'm considering this as a de facto marriage in my statistics)
White — married to ice dancer Tanith Belbin
Statistical analysis time!
Note: Tessa and Scott will not be included in this statistical analysis as they are technically the only ones not married or in a de facto relationship (apart from one other) and because the whole point of this  statistical analysis is that it can eventually be applied to their situation.
Olympic Ice Dance Champion teams married to partners: 3/9, 33.33%
Olympic Ice Dance Champions married to other ice dancers (including partners): 10/18, 55.56%
And with former marriages included: 12/18, 66.67%
Olympic Ice Dance Champions married to other ice dancers or skaters (including partners): 11/18, 61.1%
With former marriages included: 14/18, 77.78%
Summary
Tumblr media
1/3 of other (non-V/M) Olympic Ice Dance champions have married their partners
77.78% of other Olympic Ice Dance Champions went on to marry their partners, or other skaters or ice dancers
This means that other Ice Dance Olympic Champions were over 1.5 times more likely marry a fellow skater than marry a non-skater or not marry at all
Take with this what you will and please share! I spent a long time (over 2 hours) on this!

Will Tessa Virtue, Scott Moir bid farewell at Olympics?
Tumblr media
Most believe PyeongChang will mark the final Olympics for Canadian ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. But will it be their final competition period?
“We’re quick to say we don’t know because we thought for sure we were done in 2010, and we really thought for sure we were done after Sochi,” Moir said Monday. “We used to laugh at the idea of going to the Olympics in Korea. Look where we are.
“We’re not going to say that we’re done for sure, but when Tessa and I talk about it and look at each other, the feeling is that this is it. You never know, obviously, and we won’t have to make that decision until we’re there. So, that’s the good part about it. But this kind of feels like it.”
Virtue, 28, and Moir, 30, took gold at the 2010 Vancouver Games and silver in Sochi in 2014. They sat out the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons before coming back for one more Olympic run.
They went undefeated last year, capped by a third world title in April and first since 2012.
Virtue and Moir head into the fall Grand Prix season — starting, for them, with next week’s Skate Canada — as favorites to become the second couple to win multiple Olympic ice dance titles come February.
The other was Russians Oksana Grishuk and Yevgeny Platov in 1994 and 1998.
France’s two-time world champions Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron and three American couples will attempt to send Virtue and Moir out of the Olympic arena in defeat.
Moir, meanwhile, could seal his Olympic career with a kiss on the ice as he did in Vancouver and Sochi. Or, he could go bigger.
“You think I gotta take a step up? I don’t know,” he joked. “I’ll probably do it. I’ll probably just pick a point where hopefully nobody’s watching me, but there always seems to be somebody around.”
Nick Zaccardi, NBC Sports, October 16th, 2017
