Social class of M*A*S*H surgeons I got the idea from reading this interesting post by @majorbaby about Frank Burns. My reference was 8.3 Social Class in the United States

Charles Emerson Winchester III is upper-class his family has money and social position. He would certainly like you to think that his family is upper-upper class all the way back, and perhaps that's even true.

"Members of the upper-upper class have “old” money that has been in their families for generations; some boast of their ancestors coming over on the Mayflower. They belong to exclusive clubs and live in exclusive neighborhoods; have their names in the Social Register; send their children to expensive private schools; serve on the boards of museums, corporations, and major charities; and exert much influence on the political process and other areas of life from behind the scenes." B. J. Hunnicutt is upper-middle class. He went to Stanford: he was past of an exclusive fraternity, which Frank Burns comments on. He and Peg may be having cash-flow problems, but they're on the lines of "how do we pay for the second mortgage" not "how do we pay the rent". "People in the upper-middle class typically have college and, very often, graduate or professional degrees; live in the suburbs or in fairly expensive urban areas; and are bankers, lawyers, engineers, corporate managers, and financial advisers, among other occupations."

We don't get enough clues from the six appearances of Oliver Harmon Jones what social class he was supposed to be before institutional racism cut him from the series. Henry Blake - insufficient clues about background, but certainly comfortably upper-middle class when drafted. Frank Burns wants to be upper class and is origins are probably lower-middle class - he wasn't allowed into the exclusive fraternity that BJ Hunnicutt joined. "Members of the lower-upper class have “new” money acquired through hard work, lucky investments, and/or athletic prowess. In many ways their lives are similar to those of their old-money counterparts, but they do not enjoy the prestige that old money brings." John McIntyre and Hawkeye Pierce both look like scholarship students to me - McIntyre's accent places him on the South side of Boston, and Pierce's father, though a doctor, probably acquired that training the old-fashioned way, not by eight years of medical school. I place both families as lower-middle class. "The lower-middle class has household incomes from about $50,000 to $74,999, amounting to about 18% of all families. People in this income bracket typically work in white-collar jobs as nurses, teachers, and the like. Many have college degrees, usually from the less prestigious colleges, but many also have 2-year degrees or only a high school degree. They live somewhat comfortable lives but can hardly afford to go on expensive vacations or buy expensive cars and can send their children to expensive colleges only if they receive significant financial aid." Sherman Potter was a farm kid. He joined the cavalry in WWI because he could ride, and though I don't know they've ever mentioned Potter's rank in WWI, I get the impression he was an enlisted man, not an officer. He went to college to train as a surgeon as a military officer. His son-in-law is a salesman. His family may have been land rich before the Great Depression, and lost that land in bank foreclosures. That would put him in working-class origins - if so, the only other officer at the 4077th who had a working-class background is Father Mulcahy, which may explain why they get on so well.

-Nick Mohammed: Unsure whether the series that he created/writes and stars in INTELLIGENCE will be renewed as a series or as a wrap-up film, Nick has other works going. He costars in MAGGIE MOORES directed by John Slattery (MAD MEN) and stars Tina Fey and Jon Hamm; he will do voicework in the sequel to CHICKEN RUN titled CHICKEN RUN: DAWN OF THE NUGGET and he has a role in the upcoming Disney+ historical series THE BALLAD OF RENEGADE NELL which will star Alice Kremelberg (ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK), Frank Dillane, Joely Richardson and Craig Parkinson.

-Jeremy Swift: Will do voice work in the animated cat caper 10 LIVES joining Bill Nighy, Sophie Okonedo and Simone Ashley. Jeremy also joins the Disney Descendants universe for the musical DESCENDANTS: THE RISE OF RED. He currently has a cd out.

-Phil Dunster: Phil is sticking around Apple TV+ for the time being as he joined series two of their drama SURFACE which stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw (the first season saw her opposite Oliver Jackson-Cohen).

-Juno Temple: Juno was already in the DC universe with a role in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, but now she joins Brett and Cristo in the Marvel world with a role in the upcoming VENOM 3. She also has a role in the upcoming EVEREST about George Mallory's attempt at scaling the mountain. It will star Ewan McGregor, Sam Heughan and Mark Strong. However, before all that, expect to see her in series 5 of FARGO.

-Cristo Fernandez is a jobbing actor. You will hear him in TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEAST as Wheeljack

he will do voicework in SCOOB! HOLIDAY HAUNT, he appears in four shorts, the feature 3 FLOWERS and it was just announced that he's joining series 3 of Apple TV+'s ACAPULCO and the Disney+ adaptation of ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY.

-Moe Jeudy-Lamour (Thierry Zoreaux Van Damme) will costar in the sequel to cousins Stephen and Robbie Amell's film CODE 8. It will be released on Netflix.

Surgeons' residence during the "Korean Conflict¹". Residents included Captains Hawkeye Pierce, Trapper John MacIntyre, Oliver Harmon "Spearchucker" Jones, BJ Honeycutt, Majors Frank Burns, Charles Emmerson Winchester, various guests including Major Sydney Freedman, Captain Roy Dupree, North Korean POW Dr. Syn Paik (when Hawkeye and BJ tried to pass him off as a South Korean surgeon).

Trapper’s gone too long between nurses, on account of his latest back-to-back stint of two 12 hour shifts, and he’d come to the mess tent for lunch earlier than he liked to take it for the express purpose of getting Lieutenant Olsen alone long enough to convince her to do take-out with him.

However, Hawkeye’s on his heels as usual, following him without question through the tent, stacking things on his tray without properly assessing their edibility first. Wasn’t like looking helped the identification process at all. Which is one of the unspoken reasons Trapper understood to be why Hawkeye needs to sniff everything that goes in his mouth.

And that doesn’t bother Trapper, not in the slightest. It’s just one of Hawkeye’s many quirks. But not everyone is as amicable to that as Trapper is. 

He’s just started to lay on a thick layer of charm, and it’s clearly working. Her cheeks flush and her chewing slows. Her eyes sparkle and fix on his. He’s got her. He’s just about ready to brush his leg against her when he notices gaze start to flick away. She’s looking just to the right of Trapper. At first he thinks she just might really be into shoulders, which isn’t something unique to her at all. But it’s a little strange she seems to be into his left shoulder specifically. 

Then he feels what’s against that shoulder – Hawkeye. He’s leaning into Trapper, his weight on that side, as he puts his elbow on the table and observes an unidentified greybrown object impaled on the end of his fork. 

Trapper hangs his head and sighs as Lieutenant Olsen excuses herself from their table.

“What is it?” Hawkeye asks immediately, turning to Trapper and not acknowledging Olsen's exit.

“Hawk…” He isn’t mad. He can’t be mad. He can never be mad at Hawkeye for being Hawkeye. He’s just wound up. That’s why he’d followed Trapper out of the Swamp automatically and sat down for lunch at 10:30 AM even though they’d just had breakfast hardly an hour earlier.

In the morning Trapper awoke to silence in the Swamp. The inside of his mouth felt like it had been sanded down. The still beckoned to him, but he reached for the half-full flask of stale water at his bedside instead. Pursing his lips at the taste of it, he sat up slowly. He was alone in the Swamp for the first time in as long as he could remember, without having fixed it so that he could bring home a date. 

As he brushed his teeth he cataloged the whereabouts of his roommates, former and current: 

Oliver Harmon Jones, shipped back to his hometown of Richmond, Indiana. Cutting circles around every surgeon in the state and being rewarded with ire from colleagues and patients alike. But at least he was home. 

Hawkeye Pierce, now on his second full day of R&R in Tokyo, and probably blissfully unaware of it, passed out in bed next to a woman or a bottle or both. 

Frank Burns – as if on cue a squeaky bugle could be heard – fucking Frank Burns getting a head start on what would be the longest week of Trapper’s life here in Korea, where the weeks already ran a century long. 

Trapper rinsed his mouth with what was left in the water in the flask, dressed himself in a fresh set of fatigues and started for the door. He considered throwing on his robe, but the air felt humid, which was unusual for this time of year, so he left it behind and headed out into the compound. He groaned at the sight of everyone standing at attention and in formation. With their leader in mischief currently on leave, they were left only with their leader in rank.

you spent weeks building a bookshelf into a wall. i was so serious about reading more. i made us both get goodreads accounts. i fell off after writing approximately one review about daisy jones and the six. you were still updating yours when i deleted the app from my phone a month ago. i wonder if you finished siddhartha, after all.

your weeks of blood, sweat and tears have driven up the property value because you knew hardwood was the way to go.

i remember when the girls played solo for me for the first time. i think i excused myself to go to the bathroom afterwards, blamed it on hayfever. i'm the organisational hand behind the creative wizardry heart and soul of the most talented people i know, and my bassline (or even better, baseline) serves as the rhythmic and harmonic foundation for them to work their magic. i'm as steady as the bass is. my bass will keep the rhythm going, me and lis will keep everyone's feet tapping. i sometimes don't even understand what the lyrical creatives have to say.

but when i heard the words "i know i'm verging on a masochist / and this feeling's getting kind of scary" and "so long, long gone are the days when we were / one and the same / at least i can admit it / you're apathetic / let it go, can't let it go" fall from cristal's mouth and felt more than a little read by my friends' separate experiences that had nothing to do with me, and remembered in that moment the power of music to not just heal but to expose your most nauseating wounds, i realised maybe it wasn't quite right for me to find our big, beautiful porch a promise of forever on our swings when we're 80 years old but instead a moat that's keeping me from feeling anything real. i think i busted my knees crying on the bathroom floor.

i hadn't felt anything real for a year or two other than the sinking feeling at the bottom of my stomach by the time i let you know.

guilt is felt primarily in the heart but when i felt my heart stirring and waking up a couple of days ago after a year or two of vast empty nothing, i can tell you there wasn't a single ounce of shame in my body. i can tell you the heat i felt, in my heart, in my stomach, between my thighs... it had nothing to do with anyone but her. maybe the guilt crept up when i let her name fall from my lips to my best friend. you're the only person they've heard about in years, but... i think maybe you'd be glad to know that they're happy i remembered kissing people is fun sometimes.
