Olm (Proteus anguinus), family Proteidae, Slovenia

This aquatic salamander is neotenic/paedomorphic (retaining juvenile traits - ie. gills and other aquatic adaptations)

Found only in karst rock cave systems with ample water in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia Hercegovina, and far NW Italy.

Also called the “human fish”, proteus, and white cave salamander.

Olms are blind, but have excellent sense of smell and hearing (for a salamander).

Olm

Habitat: Freshwater cave systems

Strengths:

Capable of sensing organic compounds in the water through highly developed receptors in the mouth and nose

Can also detect sound waves, vibrations, and electric fields through water

Agile swimmers

Weaknesses:

Severely reduced eyes; only able to sense light

No claws and very reduced teeth

Very small; reaches only 20 cm (12 in) in length and 150 g (5.3 oz) in weight
