What Camera is Best for You?

Most people would answer you with the classic phrase, the one you have with you. And as much as this is true, it is not really the right answer. It is the easiest one, as there is little explanation needed by the person as it makes you feel comforted and reassured that no matter what you can take a great picture, even if it is just your cell phone.

At the end of the day this is complete bullshit and totally wrong and here is why:

Camera manufacturers, whether it be Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus or any other brand design and manufacture a specific model based on market research. They have talented members in their staff, or out sourced agencies that do studies on what different groups of people look for in a camera. What features, design architecture or even current colour trends are socially popular at any given moment.

A blogger will want a different arsenal of features as opposed to a travel writer. A sports enthusiast will want something different to his mate Clive who is an Entomologist… A need for macro versus a telephoto zoom makes a huge difference in the world of each person… What you buy needs to be suited to what outcome you either want or need.

So yes, what camera is best for you is based on technical specifications, and all those other fine print details. As an avid Olympus man, myself I can say that some of their cameras are not suited for some people, but others are. Let me put this in perspective:

The Olympus PEN, say the EPL-7 or 8 models is perfect for the fashion, food, travel or marketing blogger. It has a decent 16mp resolution, with an epic image stabiliser. Being mirrorless it is small and lightweight, coupled with standard lenses it is a perfect in bag easy to use camera with loads of features. Flip out screens, art modes directly and Wi-Fi features to enable on the spot uploads make it very versatile. However, it does not have a built-in viewfinder. (This is optional however) These sorts of cameras are the best camera for this sort of shooting. The in the bag small body camera, that will do what you need it to do at any moment. Panasonic, Fuji and several other brands make some great options here and the range of lenses is fantastic, offering artistic options for virtually every situation.

Owning an 80K camera body and glass worth twice that will surely give you National Geographic quality result for shooting birds in flight, or a mosquito biting the ass end of a lion at a short distance. But, do you really need to spend that amount of money? Sadly, in some instances of what you want to get, yes. However, in many others no you don’t. There is a ton of gear out there suited to the same needs at a much more affordable price and can give perfect results. You can buy a perfectly good set of gear for 15k to do the basics of wildlife or spend 20k and shoot top end landscape work.

Basically, the concept of the best camera is the one you have with you is complete rubbish. The best camera is the one you have with you that is capable of shooting what you want to shoot. Not all cameras can shoot everything properly under the spectrum of the photographic umbrella. Next time you are without your gear and there is an epic sunset, take that iPhone or Samsung pic and post it. You know it will never be as good as what you could do with a tripod, throw in some filters and the gear you saved up for…

To sum it up, big DSLR, medium DSLR, mirrorless, bridge or cell phone camera, if it suits what you want to shoot, then that will be the best camera for you at that moment. The world is full of criticism on cameras, take it with a mind that you make up and not what you are told to believe…

Ayer tuvo lugar la gala de entrega de premios de la XI edición de los premios 20blogs, unos premios que reconocen la labor de 20 blogs en distintas categorías, con dos premios extraordinarios: mejor blog entre todos esos 20 ganadores y mejor blog por votación popular.

¡Enhorabuena a todos ellos!

Aquí tenéis toda la información sobre el evento y podéis acceder a los finalistas y ganadores. Os recomiendo hacerlo porque hay auténticas joyas de todo tipo de temáticas y seguro que, si los recorréis, encontráis blogs que os encantarán.

Pero hoy os quiero hablar de uno en concreto. En la categoría Mejor blog solidario, el ganador ha sido los retratistas de animales Fotopets.

El año pasado fueron finalistas, quedaron en puertas de lograrlo. Y así encaraban en esta ocasión la gala:

Vamos sin ninguna pretensión, al igual que el año pasado. Para nosotros, que el jurado haya decidido de nuevo que Fotopets y el Proyecto Invisibles sean finalistas de la categoría ya nos hace muy felices porque el Proyecto y los Invisibles que fotografiamos ya ha conseguido más difusión en nuevo público, y lo que es más importante, más posibles familias adoptantes de estos animales que fotografiamos.

A poco que estéis involucrados en protección animal seguro que los conoceréis. Por si no es así, os resumo lo que hacen.

Andrés López, fotógrafo, y Merce Alonso, escritora, recorren protectoras y eventos fotografiando perros y gatos que necesitan una segunda oportunidad. Llevan varios años dedicando mucho tiempo, esfuerzo y también dinero de su bolsillo para que esos animales cuenten con fotos impresionantes que, sin duda alguna, facilitan que una familia se fije en ellos y los adopte. Pero no solo hacen fotos, escriben sus historias. Y además publican otros contenidos que invitan a la reflexión:
