Well, I’ve learnt basic Japanese over the past couple of weeks so can confidently tell you that you’re listening to The Takayuki Inoue Band performing music from the LP “Resurrected, Those Detectives !!” Not sure if it’s a film or a TV series- even the internet can let you down sometimes.

The internet has however finally solved the mystery of the OBI strip for me- the colourful band of shiny printed paper wrapped around the left hand side of new Japanese records and other audio/visual media. I’m not a voracious consumer of Japanese vinyl at all so was never particularly bothered by them or curious about their purpose. Of course, now with endless time available for the pursuit of pointless knowledge, I’ve discovered that the OBI (帯, Japanese for belt- originally the one used to secure a traditional kimono or yukata) is packed full of information; original release date, production date, exact selling price, a date after which said price can be legally discounted and, of course, all the usual catalogue numbers, artist’s names etc found on the record label itself. There. Riveting.

So that’s how I’m spending my time. Did you know that the city with the heaviest annual snowfall is in Northern Japan and that the Fins, per capita, drink more coffee than any other nation on the planet? Neither did I. I’m also learning new things about my navel.

Dippin’ by Hank Mobley was recorded in June 1965 at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Mobley on tenor, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Harold Mabern on piano, Larry Ridley on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. I purchased this in Okinawa in the early 80’s and because I was young and didn’t understand the value of the Japanese OBI I grew tired of them coming off when I removed the plastic album cover, so I was throwing them in the garbage. Yes, that’s quite a lot of Japanese to take in I know, so, Google Translate to the rescue: the TV series is called ‘Western Police’ and this record is subtitled ‘Concrete / Western / Everyone Loves Someone’ which I’m guessing were three separate episodes from the first series. I could be wrong...

It was obviously a huge hit in Japan, running to three seasons over a five year period from 1979 to 1984 and subsequently generating enough sustained long term interest and fandom to warrant a one-off return in the form of a two hour TV Special in 2004. The hype and excitement started even before shooting began with a live concert for 10,000 people and an exhibition-cum- sale of vehicles, weapons, scenery and other paraphernalia from the original series. Quite a hullabaloo indeed.

There’s also quite a hullabaloo surrounding the presentation of LPs in Japan- gate-fold sleeves, top quality vinyl, loads of glossy photographs, endless text that I’ll never be able to read and a first for me- an insert containing the sheet music for every track, arranged for piano. So, if you’re able to read music and have a keyboard to hand, or just want to pick out the melody on any treble clef instrument, you can play along and imagine that you too are ‘Western Police’.

Gotta love the title too; where did that come from? Were the creators so disenamoured with the Japanese force that they had to re-imagine them as a hybrid of Bodie & Doyle, Starsky & Hutch, Kojak, Frank Cannon, Regan & Carter, Steve McGarrett and all those other fine law enforcers who roughed up the wrong ‘uns and ignored everyone’s rights in the 1970s?
