The World Health Organization (WHO) designated LP.8.1 as a variant under monitoring in January 2025.

LP.8.1, was first detected in July 2024. It’s a descendant of Omicron KP.1.1.3, which is descended from JN.1, a subvariant that caused large waves of Covid infections around the world in late 2023 & early 2024.

WHO: GLOBAL COVID-19 CASES ARE INCREASING AS NEW VARIANT EMERGES

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed a global rise in COVID-19 cases, with the test positivity rate climbing to 11%, a level not seen since July 2024.

Coinciding with this uptick of cases is the emergence of a new variant known as NB.1.8.1, a descendant of Omicron, which has been classified as a Variant Under Monitoring (VUM).

Since it was first identified earlier this year, cases have been reported in several countries, particularly in travelers from China, France, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand.

In China, NB.1.8.1 has become the dominant strain and is linked to increasing emergency room visits and hospital admissions.

According to Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control, NB.1.8.1 shows strong immune-evasion capabilities, making it more transmissible than earlier variants.

Despite the surge in nearby countries such as China, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore, where some schools have returned to online learning, the Philippines’ COVID-19 situation remains stable, according to local health authorities.

While the WHO continues to assess the global public health risk as low, and current vaccines are expected to remain effective, everyone is encouraged to stay alert, practice good hygiene, and take precautions to protect their health.

Variante Beta: Cuando siento que vivo sobredosis de experiencias, cuando no termina de pasarme una que ya me empieza a suceder otra, cuando lucho en varios frentes y no gano en ninguno, siento que voy a la deriva y al mismo tiempo muy (muy) rápido, sin saber a donde pero avanzando, y las cosas pasan y pasan y no paran de pasar, me golpeo contra todo, no me quedo con nada y solo me quedan cicatrices.

Variante Gamma: Cuando no veo ni presente ni futuro me siento estático, nada sucede, ni me hundo ni me muevo pero tampoco sé a dónde ir porque no veo ninguna dirección posible para tomar. Esta angustia se ve que se instaló, incubó, y dio a luz una nueva variante que desconocía:

Variante Ómicron: Cruce de caminos. También estoy estancado, estático, nada me sucede pero esto me pasa a pesar de mi intención de moverme, de mi fuerza para luchar y de mi energía para persistir, sin lograr el más mínimo resultado. Un día desperté y me vi en el cruce de todos los caminos, los del presente y los del futuro, se exactamente a donde lleva cada uno y lo que debo hacer, pero por más que lo intente no puedo tomar ninguno, una barrera ajena me impide avanzar. Llegan peregrinxs desde esos caminos, charlan conmigo, me piden indicaciones, se las doy, me agradecen muchísimo o me acusan de idiota o de sabio y siguen por el sendero que tomaron o por otro nuevo. Y yo clavado en el cruce de todos los caminos posibles, sin posibilidad alguna.

Lo que no me mata me angustia. Mis antídotos tienen nombre y apellido, desde mis amistades hasta el whisky que me tomo en el Clash. Otras cosas que matan mi angustia es el volumen de la música que escucho, mi adicción a los podcast, leer, escribir, y por supuesto sexo oral. Las llamo variantes angustia del orto te vas a la mierda.
