More WIPs from a project that was supposed to be a quick joke and is now A Whole Thing!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is a preliminary Hikari, and Samo's big brother! He has also escaped his genre, and he is not aware that most of the things he says sound incredibly threatening! Although only Hikari seems to notice anyway. (Luckily for Hikari, he really is a nice guy!)
@adamofingolstadt - a Hikari for you! 😊
#wips#i escaped my genre#once I finish these pieces I will post them with full image descriptions#original characters#the brother character has the same issue as tatsu from way of the house husband. he's a sweet guy who always sounds like a murderer!#Ya know for the last 2 years or so I have been pouring my heart and soul into a graphic novel (link to drafts in my blog description;#I've been told they are fun to read!) but somehow I have posted less art from that than I have for this! 😅 at least as far as tumblr goes.#There's a bunch on ao3. all this is quite alright tho - Silly side projects are actually absolutely vital to keep my love of art alive#and in the long run it will actually help me build the skills and passion I need to finish my novel!#I'm just hoping i have the juice to finish all this stuff in the next week so I can get back to the novel#but I am ultimately subject to whatever the ADHD decides. I hope if I take a break from this that I do come back to finish my other pieces#I am getting faster though. I drew both of these pieces in one day and also have time to work on the comic.#today was a wildly productive day. tomorrow I am going to concentrate on being a vegetable. 😤#I must respect my body's rare gift of productivity by offering it rest and care.#I may change hikari's design a little bit but I think it's looking pretty good. added the ear piercings bc of the wonderful fan art I got!#honestly the fan art may be better than what I've made here - the bat with nails and the hands were SO good

fairy once more 🌹 my c!hannah design is complete, full design process is under the cut :)
wrow it has been like 1.5 yr since my first c!hannie drawing 😭 ourgh i love her sosososo much. i really went back n forth on whether or not to actually complete this design, due to my... complicated and strenuous relationship with the dsmp... but after talking it out and going through these pieces i wanted to do it justice one last time :)
without further ado here is a (near-complete) history of my c!hannahxxrose design. i have included text descriptions since my handwriting is notoriously doctoral (bad):
Tumblr media
DESIGN EVOLUTION:
In the beginning the design was very simple, and leaned heavily into the popular fanon. [pointing at image of c!hannah with leafy, thick foliage leaves from fall 2021: this was drawn before the event where c!hannah got her wings, aka i'm psychic teehee]
(i didn't really know much about her character, so these aren't tied to the canon and got scrapped!)
[pointing to a design of c!hannah with fairy wings from early 2022: this simple dress was a staple in my early design...]
Tumblr media
Post-Elytramaggedeon:
her wings! i think when she lost them, it really drew me into pinning down a design for her. i toyed with the imagery of torn, tattered wings, but then turned to a more melted look. i love the multicolour spread of her wings, through over time her wing shape changes from a butterfly wing to a more dragonfly/fairy-style.
i toyed with the idea of her wings being torn off completely, but at the end it was more true to the imagery to have these massive, multicoloured wings, useless and tattered.
[text beneath a c!tinarose piece from march 2022: first time drawing c!tinarose B) very uninspired outfits. also, why does c!tina have little wings??? The line "he ripped your rings, my little fairy :(" lives in my head rent-free. I wasn't happy with how this came out.]
[text beneath a c!tinarose piece from july 2022: genuinely one of the best pieces i've ever done. c!tinarose nation 4 lyfe ✌️ Really nailed the melty, shredded wing design here!
Tumblr media
Design Exploration:
While working on those [above] pieces in 2022, i started exploring different ideas for my c!hannah design.
[text pointing to a sketch from september 2022, where c!hannah has a large, tree-like arm: in this, c!hannah is a flower nymph whose body is apart of nature--the tree arm is borne! i LOVE asymmetrical designs. In my notes, i wrote: 'she draws her energy from nature to heal after losing her wings- in return, nature returns to claim her body... as time goes on, the bark grows.]
Concept: pre-DSMP design:
[text pointing to a sketch of c!hannah kneeling, hair wild with flowers and covered in climbing vines: a rosebush who becomes a girl-in her early days, she is more plant-like than human girl! i loved this hair. so fun.]
Introduction of Armour:
[text beneath multiple drawings of c!hannah from summer 2022, where she is wearing armour: in these sketches, i was feeling the urge to draw some armoured ladies-and so c!hannah became my victim!
i'm always craving sleek, feminine silhouettes in my armoured designs, without turning into battle corsets and bikinis.
at the same time as this, i was in the brainstorming/conceptual stages for other dsmp characters, and i wanted c!hannah to be unique from the generic, full-netherite design.]
Tumblr media
Final Design:
A year and a half after my first art of her, and i collected the varying design elements from past pieces into one final concept!
Knightly yet feminine, strong but still wearing (literally) the scars of pain. I wasn't confident in ever finishing this, but then i heard that she gets her wings back after the 2023 """finale""" of the smp... it was time to bring closure to this character design that i have poured a whole part of myself into. This was the final sketch.
[text near a sketch of c!hannah's final design: flower spirit, mix armoured with flowers (utena core).]
for the final piece itself, i wanted to reference the colours of hannah's minecraft skin, while still adding that fantasy-knight element. the wings are trimmed, but still retained that beautiful, multicolour melty look. her tree arm is finally blossoming and blooming with pops of colour, to signify regrowth after the trauma of losing a piece of herself. her insignia is not for any nation, but for herself.
Tumblr media
References:
The works of these illustrators greatly guided this design. Additionally, my peers and other artists who have drawn/interpreted c!hannah before <3 feminine, strong designs are so beautiful!
[not pictured are the works of JC Leyendecker, Jasmin Darnell, CLAMP, Thores Shibamoto, and my dear friend zma. their works orbit my head like a ceiling fan whenever i put the pen to paper <3)
a few things didn't end up making the cut (the cape from the final sketch, her other forms and ideas for pre-SMP, etc) but at this point, i am really excited to just stop looking at this piece LOL. it has been staring at me for forever. im very pleased with it and touched something special at seeing my own abilities, ambition, and concept designs grow within my own work. even if no one reads all 213445345 words of this, it's a wonderful capsule of the work i put into this design and im quite pleased.
aneeeways if any1 read this far i hope u like it 🙇 ok im going eepy now gnight ^^

For OCs: a simple description, e.g., “a human woman in plate armor”
A brief description of the interaction (kissing, riding a bike, etc) and any background elements
Your desired style (e.g., full-body flat color, etc). If there are specific pictures in my gallery that you like, please tell me! This is especially helpful, and I’m happy to give price quotes for styles that don’t quite fit my commission examples.
Any deadlines you may have; I will let you know whether or not I can meet them.
If you need specific dimensions, let me know! By default I work at 2550x3300px (8.5x11″).
If you would prefer your commission to remain private, please let me know up-front.
Once I accept the commission, you should be ready to provide reference images and details about character expressions and poses, etc.
I WILL draw:
Fandom characters, including those from fandoms I am unfamiliar with.

Anthro, armor, mecha, animals - these are all fine, but more complicated designs may increase the price.
Real people that you personally know, e.g., you and your friend hanging out or a portrait of your mom.
I will NOT draw:
Crisis Core fanart.
Anything of a sexual nature, including fetish art of fully-clothed characters. I will consider waist-up nudity provided it is not sexualized.
Excessive violence or gore.
Anything bigoted or mean-spirited towards real people.
I reserve the right to decline a commission for any reason.
Payment
I use Square invoices to request payment. Accepted payment methods include: credit/debit, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or ACH. No Square account is required.
I accept payment up-front. I will not begin work until I have received payment. I may accept partial payment up-front for commissions of $200 or more, but you will not receive the completed piece until it has been paid in full.
Copyright & Sharing
By commissioning me, you are purchasing my services. You may share the completed commission with attribution, but you may NOT use it to sell prints or otherwise turn a profit. If you would like to purchase the rights to use my artwork commercially, I will require a written contract and it will affect the price.
Otherwise, I retain copyright over the work, and may choose to post it on my portfolio and social media. I will not post artwork of real people without permission from the subject(s).
How It Works
You email me with a commission request.
I will confirm whether or not I can take on the project, and may ask clarifying questions about your request. (I typically respond within a few days, so if you don’t hear back, check your spam filter!)
Once I have a clear understanding of what you want, I will provide you with a price quote and an estimated completion date.
If you agree to the price, I will then send you an invoice.
You pay the invoice.
Depending on the complexity of the piece, I will send you at least one WIP so that you can confirm the work is progressing according to your wishes.
Once I have completed your commission, I will send you the finished artwork.
At this point, you may request minor tweaks to the artwork, but I will not make any major changes.

Commission info!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Current commission status: Temporarily closed while I complete current batch! Should be open again in a few weeks (feel free to email me to go on a waitlist!)
Hi there!! I’ve updated my commission info! I’m currently offering 3/4 body (or waist-up) and bust style commissions! Please read all the info below the ‘read more’ before reaching out!
More detailed info under the cut! :)
About:
I’m currently offering two different types of commissions (a larger ¾ body version, or a smaller bust version) in two different rendering styles! Prices will depend on whether you’d like a partially rendered or a fully rendered piece.
Pricing:
All prices are in USD, payments made via PayPal.
* A  3/4 body/waist-up: ($60 for partial rendering, $70 for full rendering).
* A  bust: ($30 for partial rendering, $40 for full rendering).
Additional characters may be added for half the price of the requested style/type (for example, an additional, fully-rendered, 3/4 character would cost an extra $35).
Please note:
All drawings will have very simple backgrounds (typically one to two colours at most). I will also send you a transparent version.
The partially rendered style may be a little more sketchy than a fully rendered piece! I would only recommend requesting this style if you’re okay with things being a little less polished! (I personally love scratchy art but totally respect if that’s not your thing haha)
Complicated detailing (such as ornate costuming/armour, weapons, animal companions, etc.) may increase pricing somewhat depending on complexity - but we can discuss this together before any payment is requested.
I’m happy to draw your OC if you only have a written description of them available! But please do provide me with visual references too (whether it’s a general mood board, costume idea or hairstyle/pose, etc!)
Things I don’t draw:
·   excessive gore (a little bit of dramatic blood is okay!)
·   nsfw material
·   exact celebrity/photo likeness (I’m just not good at it lol. Please feel free to use them as references though for a general vibe/aesthetic!)
If there’s something I haven’t covered that you’re not sure about, please feel free to check with me!
How to request a commission?
If you’d like to commission me please contact me at [email protected]. In your email you should include:
1. The email address you’d like me to send the invoice to
2. What type of commission you’d like (i.e. ¾, or bust, and partial or full rendering)
3. A detailed description of what you’d like me to draw and/or visual references for your character/s or ideas
4. Whether you have a specific timeframe or deadline in mind!
What happens next?
I correspond through email! Once I accept your commission I’ll draw up a basic sketch and send it to you. If you’re satisfied with the sketch, I’ll send you an invoice for payment through PayPal and once payment is received, I’ll complete the full drawing! I’ll probably send you some colour samples to make sure the flats look okay too.
You can post the image/use it however you want!
How long will it take?
Unless a specific deadline is mentioned, I will typically aim to complete a commission within two weeks (maximum) from approval of the sketch. Please note It may take me up to two weeks to respond to your initial email too! Sometimes life happens and I just want to make sure I’m giving myself enough time to give your artwork the attention it deserves :)
I will let you know ASAP if there are any expected delays. If something comes up and I can’t finish the drawing or meet a deadline for whatever reason I’ll issue a refund!
If you’ve got any questions feel free to message me here or at my email address ([email protected]).
Thanks for reading! <3

Work-in-progress meme
Since i was tagged by both @likeyua and @the-great-elwisty, guess i will do it after all XD
Rules: post the names of all the files in your wip folder regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it!
My fanfic WIP folder is full of docs for my World of Quest fanfic "What I Sow I Shall Reap", because each chapter has a separate doc. And there is over 30+ chapters, with only about half of them finished, soooo i am not posting ALL of these XD The last one i am currently working on is Chapter 15, "The Brighter The Light, The Darker The Shadow". And i decided to translate a little snippet from it (since the work itself is currently only in Russian), so here you go :3
"Nestor leaned from the cabin's window and with eyes full of unadulterated scepticism looked at the scenery below :
"Those mountains hardly look like volcanoes to me. Way, are you sure that this time we are totally in right place, and did not "went by ways of astray in your space-tangled thoughts"?"
"Doesn't look like the image Chromeus showed us either…", uttered Anna from her suddle on Graer, who was flying nearby tail-cabin.
"Well, i dunno about you, but i like it better this way!" cheerfully replied the griffin with a smile on his beak, "No scorching heat, no sweat rivuleting down your everything, you could freely breathe…"
"Like anyone can freely breathe in your presense", grumbled Quest, loud enought for everybody to hear.
"The way's thread lead to search's skein in this day and hour", with no hesitation, but with a twinge of bitterness proclaimed Way, "Got on a trail of not our arrival its unstrung pieces, but winded they up once more."
"Way is right - those are indeed The Volcanoes That Never Sleep", - spoke Gatling in a conciliatory tone, rushing to his friend's defence, "It's just that the periods of their active eruption are taking turns with periods of its absense, with every period lasting few years. According to rumors, the last time they were active… Was two or three years ago, if i am not mistaken."
"Then why are they called The Volcanoes That Never Sleep?" clearly puzzled, Nestor turned to the cyborg and rised a brow.
From the depths of a mountain, the most colossal amongst its chain and the one that sported a whole three mouths, suddenly came a deafening riff of a lightlute, which made the overgrown slopes shook and raised a couple of pebble avalanches. And just a little later a thunderous female voicewas heard across the landscape:
"Greetings to all of my most brightest and irresistibly hot brothers and sisters! I am Funleadia Noonestia, and i will not let today's day be any lamer than yesternight! So let that good ol' volcano be i-i-i-ignated!"
The mountain shook again - this time from a joyful squeal belonging to at least a few hundreds of voices, and then from an uplifting rythm of a loud music that just made your feet dance by themselves.
"And that's why they are called like that", summarised Gatling, slightly shaking his head to the beat and tapping his foot.
"Round-the-clock parties", Quesе contemptuously narrowed his eyes while already rummaging through the chest with camping supplies in search of earplugs, "I hate round-the-clock parties".
And i am tagging @dujour13, @undyingembers, @turbulentpumpkin43 and @queen-scribbles :D
(Sorry if i tagged someone who already was tagged, and also no pressure)

well, ive doodled a couple of slugcats recently that i wanted to turn into full drawings, but i felt that leaving them as only slightly differently colored variations would be a tad boring, and i ain’t have this many oc’s either.
SO instead, you can send in your own slugcat oc’s and i will draw them!
reblog this post with an image of your own sluggy and the number next to the pose you want (plus any extra info to take into account) and i will add you to the list!
i will upload every finished slugcat here separately (with a transparent background) and once everythings done i’ll upload the whole collage to the RW discord, if you want to be pinged for that drop your discord username along with the request.
here are a couple of rules however:
1. only a single slugcat per person, unless there isn’t enough interest
2. if your designs body strays too far from the bases it might get rejected, extra frills, slight changes to ears or tail and such are fine, but major changes that would require an overhaul to most of the base are not.
3. please check if someone else has already claimed that spot before you, if you ask for the same one i might skip over your request.
4. i will only be taking picture references, i will not draw a slugcat from a text description.
for the first time around, i will only take one request per base and only draw 7 slugcats total, but depending on how this goes i might open these bases again later with a more freeform approach!
i don’t have any exact promises for when all of them will be finished, we’ll just have to sit tight and see!
i hope you’ll like em!
all drawings have now been filled out! you can find the finished pieces here

Pattern Review: CUT/SEW 016 Lolita Victorian One Piece Sewing Pattern
CUT/SEW is a very small patternmaking company that released a few lolita patterns. I bought one, and here's my review. I've rewritten this review several times because I keep having issues staying neutral, so we're going to start out with the questions that patternreview.com asks, and then I'll add my main personal issues with this at the end.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pattern Description:
A lolita fashion staple, this one piece dress (OP) is meant to be customized with fabric choice and trim to fit your favorite style or subculture. It includes a pleated yoke, no closures, and an extremely gathered skirt for a full babydoll silhouette. Mix and match fabrics like chiffons and charmeuse on the sleeves and bodice for an extra elegant look. For maximum fullness, we recommend a petticoat with this dress.
From the CUT/SEW website.
So, there's two descriptors of this garment, and "lolita" and "victorian" are both things that don't describe this garment. CUT/SEW has more than once said that they're an American company making J-Fashion inspired patterns, but slapping a couple of "inspired" into this descriptor could really go a long way. Someone buying your product should have that information available to them on the item page, not deep in the brand's official instagram stories from 18 months ago.
Pattern Sizing:
The sizing of this pattern confuses me. The instructions do not provide any finished garment measurements. The envelope itself does not provide any sizing guidelines; that has to be downloaded off their site. Once you go through the "size calculator" on their site, which isn't a calculator as much as a list of sizing options, you'll see that there's no vertical measurements listed at all. Maybe I'm just too tall for this pattern? We won't know, because no one has posted that information.
In addition, this pattern calculator includes a waist and hip measurement, but the waist and hip measurements of the actual garment are about as free-size as you can get. It doesn't matter if my waist measurement is larger than my hip or bust measurement, because it doesn't matter on the garment at all. Why are they listed there, when the only measure that matters in this list of measurements is the bust? That just serves to confuse new sewers and help them make bad decisions.
Does it look like the photo/drawing on the envelope once you were done sewing it?
Tumblr media
Yeah, here's my beef: based on the CUT/SEW website, there is no way to tell what this pattern is actually supposed to look like. Their model is obscuring the details of the dress with the pose. Someone decided that only one picture of the sample garment was needed, instead of posting a front and back image in addition to their model pose. The fashion illustration shows the yoke to be going down below the bustline, but the actual pattern has it fall above the bustline (which is in line with the site description calling it a yoke). Their technical illustration is nice-looking, but it's not a proper fashion flat. I really cannot fault a company for not making a technically correct fashion flat when they're this size, but the fact is that this flat does not communicate the proper proportioning of the finished garment. This would be completely acceptable if there were three more pictures of the test garment.
I've measured the pattern and I've measured my garment, and it's the length that the pattern dictates that it should be. My garment does not look like the pattern.
We're not going to complain that the model isn't styled in a lolita way. They're just there to show the garment, not to enter a coordinate contest. However, we are going to complain that the only image they have of this garment does not actually show you the garment.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
The instructions were an ABSOLUTE DREAM to follow. I'm not joking. They are the best newbie-friendly instructions that I've read from any pattern in my life. Everything is worded clearly. The diagrams are useful. It has helpful advice for new sewers. They were, undeniably, fantastic. No only is a new sewer going to be able to follow these instructions, but they will finish the project with more information about how to sew than they had when they started the project.
There is one part where the instructions say to press the tucks towards the center of the yoke, and the pattern is made for them to be pointed away from the center (the proper way, btw). Since the instructions are DLC and don't actually ship with the pattern, this would be an easy fix on CUT/SEW's part if they would like to correct that.
Tumblr media
Also, one of the pattern pieces has completely incorrect instructions on it. You can tell, both by the fact that the place on fold symbol is lined up with the resizing lines (which is a patterning no no) and by the fact that it's upside-down relative to the rest of the pieces, that this was a change that was made after the pattern was already completed. It's also also incorrect instructions. If you cut the collar like this, you will not be able to complete the collar. You will be two front pieces short and have a collar 8" too long for the neck hole. All that is required is to label this "cut 4" instead of "cut 2 on fold" and the whole thing would be perfect. Also, since the instructions are an additional download, again, it would be easy for them to modify the PDF to warn people that a piece might be misprinted. When your goal is to make something for new sewers, you owe it to them to make sure your pattern will not stop them from making the garment. That needs to be part of your dedication to helping your client base, especially when your client base is paying money for your product.
Also, there are NO NOTCHES at all, except to mark the yoke. There are no sleeve notches. There is no center back notch. There are NO SLEEVE NOTCHES. Notches don't make a pattern more complex; they're guidelines that make things a lot easier. Please slap on like 1 per seam. It makes things better for everyone.
Also, there are many steps where a very simplified instruction is given. There's a lot of better ways to construct this garment, but there were a lot of times where ease of assembly was chosen over a fully professional finish. I completely support this decision, as their customer base is largely new sewers who don't want to be overwhelmed by complex steps.
Fabric used:
I used some heavy matte satin from the Joann Fabrics Casa Collection for the bodice, and some thin halloween satin from Joann Fabrics for the skirt. The white lace was from Dharma Trading and the black lace was stash that I think I bought at Joann back when I had 30% off the 20% off the clearance price on trims. My original goal was to also add a chiffon overskirt, but I scrapped that when I realized that the bustline/waistline on this doesn't actually go below the bust.
I want to describe my dress as "I can't believe I used the good satin for this".
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
Tumblr media
I did some alterations on the front yoke because I wanted to put in some lace. I did ensure that the piece was the proper size and shape after the alterations. I also changed the neck bow and the waist ties into a wide ribbon, because I ran out of fabric to do them of the main body.
Would you sew it again?
No, I would not. First of all, this pattern has 1/4" seam allowance included, which is just frustratingly small. I don't know how any kind of company that makes garments can find that it's enough seam allowance for this.
Second, while this was pretty easy to complete, once I figured out the misprinted collar bit, it just doesn't make a garment that I would ever want to wear. It's not a bad garment, but it's not lolita.
Because this has no closures, the neck has to be big enough to fit over my head, and that ruins the lolita silhouette. If I was going to make this again, I'd pattern in a back keyhole and make it out of a fabric with a slight stretch, and then go down a size or two.
Would you recommend it to other?
This is a case where I really can't tell if I recommend these. The pattern literally only needs to expand their seam allowance to 5/8" and they'd have some of the easiest patterns out there. That's a really big deal. However, the fact that you have to go into this pattern completely blind is something that's ruined it for me. I'd recommend this company again if they have very clear photos of what the garment actually looks like. If you know what you're making, and you think that is what you want to be making, and they fix any misprints in their pattern, then it's a really good company.
But, as it currently stands, there's just a couple of things that are so confusing to me (1/4" seam allowance?? really?? on a garment???) that I'm hesitant to recommend them as a blanket term.
I definitely do not recommend this garment for lolita, but if I had a nickle for every pattern sold as lolita that isn't remotely lolita, I'd have an original release of Honey Cake in my closet. As a handmade lolita community, we have to know that checking to see if the pattern is actually lolita is our responsibility. However, to be able to check that, we need to actually know what the garment the pattern makes will look like.
Conclusion:
I have said it before: I really, REALLY want to like CUT/SEW as a company. They're a small number of people who work really hard and have a company mindset that really sits well with my own mindset.
A lot of work went into patterning and then making instructions for a beginner-friendly garment. I want to recognize that.
However, there's just a ton of very small things about these patterns that confuse me so much. Why the tiny seam allowance? Why no notches? Why no vertical measurements? Why no physical instructions? Why no good picture of the sample garment?
Why are there size differences on the skirt between sizes when the skirt is so large? The 1" between sizes doesn't really matter on a piece that is 180" wide. That's less than a 1% difference between sizes. Why are the sides of the skirt cut at an angle when the skirt is 180" wide?
I think it's possible that this pattern, which was one of CUT/SEW's first patterns, doesn't reflect recent changes that they've made as to how they make their finished patterns. However, since this was like $26 with shipping, I'm not going to review another of their patterns unless someone sends it to me for review.
BTW, if anyone from CUT/SEW wants to use pictures of this dress as promotional images, contact me (pink @t pinkandthekeytarcat dot com). I worked hard on this dress and someone might as well benefit from that work. I'm happy to help a small company be better able to communicate to their customer what item they're buying. If y'all want more than just those pictures up there, though, contact me pretty soon, because I'm going to disassemble the dress pretty soon to reclaim that cool skull fabric.
Pattern: 7/10. The lack of notches, the absurd seam allowance, and the one part with the bad instructions are the negatives. The very clear instructions and simple construction are the positives. Overall Experience: 4/10. The instructions and sizing being not included (seriously just print them out and shove them in the envelope; it's an easy fix), and the really poor representation of the pattern on the website are the negatives.
I do want to point out that there were two other negative things, but they're side-effects of CUT/SEW being a very small business, and I can't hold it against them. First, I hate patterns printed on bond paper. It requires you to cut out the pattern out first, and then cut the fabric, or else it requires you to wreck your sewing scissors. However, they're a small company and probably don't have access to have their patterns printed onto tissue paper on an as needed basis. The second is that this pattern was about $26 with shipping. Again, they're a small company printing patterns on an as-needed basis, and they're probably barely breaking even on a lot of these designs. They operate with a smaller profit-margin than the big 4 patternhouses and it's not reasonable to ask a company that small to put out patterns of this quality for $5. These are things that negatively impacted my experience, but the fact that I was supporting a small indie business that I really like the concept of made it so that I won't hold it against them, so they're not part of this review. They can easily change the pattern misprint, the 1/4" seam allowances, the bad pictures of the sample garments. I don't think they can easily change their prices.
Anyway, that's my experience with this pattern. The company has a ton of potential and I'd love to see them improve on a few small things.

Updated Commission Info
Send me the details through dm or mail to [email protected], specifying type (icon / half body / full body etc.) and coloring (lineart/ flat colors/ or full color). Once those details are set, deposit half the price on my PAYPAL, and the commission will begin. You won’t have to send me the rest till the piece is finished.
- First step is the sketch, which I will send for you to approve (I will redraw it up to two times in case you’re not satisfied)
- Please send character reference (images / photos if you have them please), and/or detailed descriptions. If you want, specify the character’s pose or, send me a small description about the personality of the character in case I don’t know them, so I can get as close as what you want as possible!
Even if you can’t commission me, if you could reblog this post it would be a HUGE help.
Thank you all!

Ask Answers: March 30th, 2021- Part 1
We’ve been really focused on getting the Step 3 DLC done and keeping up with asks kind of got away from me, aha. Thank you for waiting for a reply! We’re still definitely behind, but here’s a good chunk of responses!
I love Our Life so much but if the release of the step 3 dlc is in April, please don't "release" it on April 1, my poor heart can't take that prank 😭
Don’t worry! I’m horrible at pranks, haha. When we do post something specifically for April Fool’s it’s always to pretend it’s a joke when in reality it’s something we’re actually planning to do. But we don’t have anything like that arranged for this year. Any posts on April 1st will just be like normal.
Omigod, can you end the game in love with Cove but not in a relationship? My character stayed calm at the restaurant and Cove slept over at her home and I think I may have missed it. I'm delirious if I did, may never stop laughing. The children are idiots
Haha, yes, it is possible to be in love and still not get into an actual relationship. There’s no forced ending where the two are made to confess their feelings and accept, it’s all optional/avoidable.
How can you see the new main character cut-in images? I'm not trying to be rude, but, all of my playthroughs, but I haven't seen them yet. (I know you can go through an entire game without seeing them, but I have went through multiple games.)
It’s a bit of a spoiler to say here, but you can check out the guide we posted on Steam HERE!
Is it possible to win first place in the library quiz with Lizzy (Step 1 DLC)
Yep, it is! Someone made a guide for the answers HERE (it’s also on Steam). We probably shouldn’t have required a perfect score to win a children quiz, but oh well, haha.
Hello!
In the future (in step 4) can you marry Cove even if you are friends? I would love to have a platonic wedding with him!
I’m afraid not. As much as he cares for the MC when they’re besties, Cove would only really want an official marriage if it’s based on romance.
Hello! I bumped into Our Life randomly last month, and it is one of the best coincidences I have ever laid on. I love how the choices and little details in the story changes throughout the game, and I'm excited to keep supporting you! I'm absolutely in love with Cove and would like to ask what keeps him to be especially interested in the MC? Other than how you can choose what fondness level you have with him, what ultimately leads him to be in sync with us? Sorry if it's a little much & thank u!
Cove likes the MC because, regardless of the different personality traits you can give the MC, they meet him on his level, listen to him, understand him (even if you’re indifferent and not really close the MC still gets where he’s coming from), and if you’re fond/crush/love than you’re there for him. He finds the MC someone he can respect, trust, and, if they’re close, feel safe with. I’m glad you enjoyed the game!
hi there! for xoxo droplets i see the that female pronouns are used in the description, in the actual game can you change the pronouns or are they stuck as female? i'm aware the game is free, but i have a bad habit of buying dlc's before playing the game so it would be helpful to know before i spend money on it. if anything i'll save that money for more our life dlcs when they come out :D
XOXO Droplets does have a set MC. It’s the story of a specific person rather than a game about making your own story. All of our games prior to Our Life were about exploring MCs that were fully fleshed out people in their own right, so you can’t get the OL experience from what we did before. But we do plan to do more custom-style MCs going forward from here!
For the our life nsfw dlc, will you have to be in the patron to have it or  will there be another way for people who really support the game but can't pay to get it?
I’m afraid not. We might put it up for sale somewhere other than Patreon someday (though never on Steam or Itch) since we know not everyone can use that site, but it will still cost money on any other hosting page we use. It’s unfortunately not a piece of content we can give away for free.
Hello! I finally got to play Xoxo Blood Droplets and it mentioned about a DLC coming out soon. Is it already out or are you still planning it?
We are still planning to finish it when we can, we just had to put it on hold because 2020 was a tough year and we needed to put all our focus on Our Life. There’s some of the extra DLC stories available for beta testing on the Patreon.
Is there a link to the soundtrack for Xoxo Blood Droplets? I really like the music in this game!
That’s not available yet, but we’ll probably put it up for sale once the rest of the stories are done.
Would there be any chance for XOXO Droplets OSTs to be released in the future? (Please take my money-)
We might! There are some things we wanna do and fix before we really start advertising XOXO Droplets things again, but hopefully it all comes together.
Why does Cove dislike Shiloh so much despite all of Shiloh's efforts to get along? I can understand his dislike for Lizzie, but why Shiloh?
They met under bad terms (with an arranged play date he had no choice in), Shiloh’s sort of pushy himself when it comes to trying to get along, and Cove thinks he’s just kind of unusual in how he interacts/reacts with people. They don’t click, basically.
Is there a way to have your character be a tsundere? And have Cove toughened up a bit due to that? Sorry if the is a stupid question! ^^;
Maybe? The options in the game aren’t based on those types of personality tropes and I don’t know them well enough to say if you can accurately find a way to make it work with the available options. But it’s not a stupid question, I’m sure plenty of other people have considered something similar c:
do voiced names work only with their exact spelling? cause my mc is called Sophia and one of the voiced names is Soffia so i was wondering but if only works like that it's fine (sorry if i made any mistakes, english isn't my first language)
“Voice” and “text” are separate! You can pick the “voice” you want and then type in whatever “text” you prefer. And your English is really good.
Will OL:NF be based on a season/break like the first game? Or some other type of setting?
Our Life: Now & Forever takes place over the full course of Autumn. So, the start of school and then into the fall holiday season type of time period.
Will we ever see a jealous cove😭😭 please im begging u-
Only in small ways, really. Sadly, I’m just not someone who enjoys jealousy in stories and therefore I don’t know how to implement it in a way that feels enjoyable. Maybe I’ll figure out a angle I can work with in future projects.
Do you have any plans with Our Life once step 4 has been released along with step 3's DLCs?
After the Step 3 DLCs and Step 4 we’ll be releasing the Cove wedding DLC, the Derek romance DLC, and then the Baxter romance DLC. The project will likely be considered fully complete at that point.
Hello, I just needed to first of all sat how amazed I was when I discovered this game. I thought I would be disappointed by the lack of love interests, but you worked so hard to make sure Cove is the Best Boy for so many different people!! It really has been my comfort game for a while now, and I think all the different choices you allow make it the best romance game I’ve played in my life. The only problem is now my expectations for love are Cove level, and no one can live up to that. You’ve put so much consideration to make this game super inclusive and I think it’s amazing. If I can ask, for the exclusive NSFW Patreon dlc, will it only be available for the month it comes out? Or could I become a patron months later and still be able to download it. I just don’t have a job right now otherwise I would LOVE to subscribe to your Patreon and definitely will once I have the money again!! Thank you so so much for making such a lovely game that’s brought me so much joy.
&
Hiya! I'm so sorry for sounding like a complete degenerate for asking, but will the nsfw moment on patreon still be available even if i'm not a patron of the month it comes out? (e.g. i didnt pay/join the necessary tier before the moment is released) Thank you for your hard work on OL, I really connected with Cove in a way I never anticipated.
Thank you very much for such kind words! The Patreon DLC will be up for download on the Patreon indefinitely once it’s done. Just like the normal DLCs, you can pay to get it whenever you like but it won’t be up for sale until it’s finished. So take all the time you need.
Sorry to bother you guys, but there was an earlier ask detailing the OL LI's love languages and I was just wondering- Would that be for them personally, as in what they do, or the love language they enjoy receiving the most? Because I know for some people it's different for both on giving and receiving and was a bit confused, haha. Sorry for the trouble, your games are really nice!
For Cove and Derek it’s what they like to receive and what they give. For Baxter, it’s what he likes to get. What he gives is tailored to his partner. He’s flexible that way~ And it’s no trouble.
asking (and also fanning... fanboying? fangirling? fanpersoning? screw it- from a distance) anonymously because my confidence is nonexistent.
will you be doing a kickstarter for our life: now and forever? i know it's probably been asked and mentioned before, but will you be doing a kickstarter akin to the one done for our life: beginnings and always? if so, will you be doing similar tier rewards? (if you guys do so, i will [politely] throw my money at you).
now, to the fan.. personing? FAN. uhm. to the part where this anonymous agender idiot will begin to act as the fan they are.
THE GAME IS SO. SO NICE. IT'S CUSTOMIZABLE. I'M REALLY HAPPY ABOUT THAT PART. AAAAA I ALSO ENJOY THAT YOU GAVE US THE OPTION TO JUST STAY BEST FRIENDS OR SOMETHING A8DBAIHEW- AND YOU INCLUDED AROS AND ACES IN THAT SEXUALITY CHOOSING PART- aaaAAA AND YOU MADE ELIZABETH FILIPINO- THANK YOU SO SO MUCH FOR CREATING SUCH AN INCLUSIVE GAME!!!
to summarize; will you be doing a kickstarter? and thank you for creating such a nice game. i, and likely the majority if not all of those who have played the game, am thankful.
Aw, thanks <3! I’m so happy it was such a nice experience for you. We are planning on having a Kickstarter for Our Life: Now & Forever. It’ll have similar rewards to the Our Life: O&A Kickstarter, but some changes will have to be made. Like, we’ll definitely need to increase the rate for getting a voiced name. Originally it was $3USD, which was super low for how much work it really took to add in a customized piece of voice acting, aha. Live and learn.
So sorry if you've already answered this, I looked but I couldn't find anything. Is the 18+ DLC coming out alongside the Step 3 DLC, or do they have different development timelines entirely? I'm so excited for all the DLC coming out in the future, and even though the release dates aren't out, I'm already counting down the days. :)
They have different development times and will come out separately. Despite taking place in the same Step period, they’re disconnected pieces of content and making progress on one doesn’t mean the other is closer to being finished. The normal Step 3 DLC is releasing first. It’s great to hear you’re looking forward to them!
Hey!! I'm absolutely LOVING Our Life! I have been pondering on one question though, what's Cove's ethnicity, if there is a set one? Or is it something we can Headcanon?
&
hi hi! i wanted to say first of all that i absolutely adore our life. it's one of my favourite games of 2020, and i think it was just the perfect dose of positivity we all needed, even if you didn't intend to release it during such a hectic year lol! secondly, i wanted to say: if it's alright to ask, what ethnicity is cove? :-0 and what about his parents? i was just curious about it ^^)/ thank you!!
Cove’s mom, Kyra, is white. But his dad’s, Cliff’s, race doesn’t come up and players are able to headcanon it. So Cove is half white and half whatever you prefer Cliff to be!
hello! there was a post on the patreon where you can run your fingers down cove's chest in errands - how do you get that scene? ♥
That was an old mistake on my part- you can only get that scene in the Ending rather Errands. You have to leave the big family dinner at the restaurant to go into the car, be dating Cove for a while, have Cove come see you there, and then mention using your hands when Cove makes a joke about hands.
in baxter’s dlc, is there any point where you can tell him about the previous renters of the condo?
You can talk to him about that in the normal Step 3 DLC!
—– —– —– —–
Thank you for all the interest in our games everybody :D

Steven Universe: End of an Era: Outline & Review
I wrote this review in October but never got around to posting it here
Steven Universe: End of an Era is far more than an art book–it’s also a collection of behind-the-scenes material, stories about the experience of working on the show, planning documents and associated background info, and both older versions of developed concepts AND concepts that never made it into the show. It's a huge fusion of all those elements, and it's definitely an experience!
Some low-quality images are included with my review just to give you an idea of what’s there--it’s not a good substitute for getting your own copy, but here’s a tour!
Tumblr media
Like the previous concept art book, Art and Origins, I'll be giving you a description of the structure and overview, while also collecting notable information for fans. Obviously just about everything is "notable" once again, but I'll aim for unique insight or perspective on the main source material, keeping the screaming about everything new to a minimum so you can also enjoy something for yourself if you pick it up. My low-quality photos should prevent people from feeling like I'm reproducing the book in any capacity. Please grab one while you can and have your own experience!
[SU Book and Comic Reviews]
OVERVIEW
The book is titled "End of an Era" for a couple reasons--obviously because it is released after the show has wrapped, but also because Gem history recently ended its "Era 2" and began Era 3--an age of prosperity and peace. The author--the person in charge of adapting all of this information into this slick, readable package--is Chris McDonnell, whose work was previously applied on the Art and Origins book.
The foreword is by N.K. Jemisin, a well-known science fiction author who's a huge fan of the show (and wrote a really excellent series that also has a weird geological connection, by the way).
And the cover, like its predecessor, is shiny and decorated with a beach scene featuring minimalistic characters--this time it's the Gems at night in front of the Temple, and on the back cover is a big pink leg ship in a cross-legged pose.
The interior covers are decorated with tons of amazing sketches of Steven and Connie on the front, and a bunch of Gem sketches on the back. Every interior page that most would leave blank is highlighted with some kind of sketch art or character exercise--it's so much to look at, so much to absorb.
The book is dedicated "For Eddie."
Its organization is different from the previous book in that it shares applicable work in chunks associated with groups of episodes rather than pertaining to different aspects of building the show.
FOREWORD
Tumblr media
N.K. Jemisin gives us such a great introduction to the book--apparently understanding very well that the audience of this book is full of animation enthusiasts and adult fans more than it is full of kids, and explaining that bewildering journey some adults had from blowing this show off as a silly kid thing to falling in love with it hard and fast.
The important thing, Jemisin says, is being able to trust a storyteller with your heart. And it was clear to her that Rebecca Sugar knew what she was talking about and was saying important things about identity and the radical power that comes with accepting it and demanding respect.
Important also is how we handle heroes and who gets to be one in fantasy. That's part of the reason Steven Universe speaks to so many--because we see ourselves here, and know stories can be about us. Acknowledging the power we all have to MAKE THINGS BETTER with what we fight for is so important--especially if we're going to speaking to the next generation about it.
Highlighting Rose Quartz as a "born leader" who failed and Steven as a relatable scamp who did what she couldn't, Jemisin asserts that we can save the world.
1. END OF AN ERA
Tumblr media
We start with an appeal to the audience to think about identity and the formative parts of our childhood--and how different it is if who you are and who you become is restricted, mocked, erased, or Not Allowed. Most people, if not ALL people, can relate to this, but for those of us with a special relationship with Steven Universe because of queer identity, this hits hard.
But it doesn't have to be anything grand to be something we respect--this show's authenticity comes largely from how personal everything is, drawn from real-life experiences and incidental truths from each artist's perspective, leaning hard on childhood and formative experiences.
Tumblr media
Rebecca Sugar offers some interview bits to discuss writing philosophy and why "writing female characters" was difficult for a nonbinary person who'd been socialized as a girl and a woman. Rebecca has spoken before about how frustrating it is that marketing for cartoons was SO gendered when she was growing up (and to some extent still is).
The Gems in the story are all "she/her," but on their planet they're defined by their work, not by emotion or relationships (unlike women in our society), so having them be socialized opposite to how she was and be able to claim those emotions through choice and NOT as just an expectation "as women" was revolutionary. Rebecca wants her show to tell all marginalized people that they don't deserve to be in the margins.
Tumblr media
Weighing in on other aspects of the show were Ian Jones-Quartey, Joe Johnston, and Miki Brewster. Ian describes feeling like at first doing SU was a thrill ride that meant they'd finally get to do all the cool stuff, but it quickly became a responsibility that he took very seriously--the need to tell a good story now that he'd been given a megaphone.
Promotional art, planning documents, character sketches, and concept art from the lighthearted to the stone serious is included, along with some very cool (sort of famous) timeline charts that track major characters' developments. It's emphasized by Rebecca that the developmental materials ARE NOT CANON (and especially are not MORE canon) compared the final show.
Tumblr media
There are concept sketches alongside final art for Aquamarine and Topaz in "Wanted" (with Topaz labeled "Imperial Topaz"), the Zircons in "The Trial," Blue and Yellow Diamond, and the Off Colors (including Pink Lars).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And there's also a spread of "the two sides of Steven's life: Gem Magic and Rock N Roll" featuring Sadie Killer and the Suspects (referred to as "Buck's band")--as well as a cool "Crew Cameos" key and some concepts for short-haired Connie.
And then there's some more "finished" art with stills alongside concepts, including some background art, revision, and really cool "fairytale" art from some of the shadowplay storytelling bits. We get "Lars of the Stars," "Jungle Moon," and "Can't Go Back."
2. THE BEGINNING OF THE END: A SINGLE PALE ROSE
Tumblr media
In discussing the huge reveals and Gem mysteries in the show, the pacing is examined, and emphasis is put on the intended "slow burn." One of the most difficult things in the show was to strategize so that every piece that was needed to support another piece in the future was placed properly to seed what it was supposed to.
Some of the ideas they developed were more of a group effort and were fit together collaboratively (like Amethyst's being younger than the other Gems and Jasper being from Earth), while others were intended from the beginning based on Rebecca's vision (the fundamental idea of Pink Diamond's true identity, for instance, as well as Obsidian's design and sword and our Pearl not being Pink's first).
Tumblr media
The writing process gets a great deep dive here, including fun tidbits like how the orb in the moon base was inserted by Joe Johnston and they literally had no idea what it was for when they wrote the episode. They repurposed it when they figured out what they needed.
Rebecca credits her detailed timelines for helping keep the order straight, and discusses how other artists are sometimes flabbergasted that a storyboard-driven show can have this much detail and continuity and yet not get wrecked by the free non-scripted boarding process. But Rebecca and the Crew valued that approach and loved the way fresh eyes would handle an idea, making it come back alive, entertaining, vivid.
Several Crew members weigh in on the writing process. Lauren Hecht refers to making lots of incorrect guesses despite being on the inside. Joe Johnston recalled getting briefed on his first day and getting so excited to start working on this massive project.
Miki Brewster remembered being told Rose Quartz is Pink Diamond and being shocked--and also confused about why Ruby and Sapphire would need to be married if they're already basically married. Drew Green talks about being brought in late and getting to watch unaired episodes and a rough of the movie while eating cereal.
Ian Jones-Quartey complains about Pink Diamond's real jester-like form being leaked to the internet through a Hot Topic shirt. Rebecca piggybacks on that and says it was upsetting that the wedding was leaked because of toy fair keychains featuring Ruby and Sapphire in wedding attire. They'd always be worried about leaks, and sometimes Rebecca struggled not to talk about the reality of Pink Diamond before the reveal because she knew it would make so much more sense once the truth was out. And everything associated with Rose makes more sense once you know she's Pink--especially what happened with Bismuth, considering what we know about how Pink Diamond has a habit of treating anyone who no longer serves her interests.
Tumblr media
When it comes to visual cues, Rebecca also talks about intentional designs to create a feeling of unity between concepts, like the flower shapes on Pink Diamond's palanquin lining up with the poofs of Steven's hair and the star imagery of the series. Steven Sugar and Mary Nash discuss how the Human Zoo incorporated this imagery, trying to look like Homeworld with a Pink Diamond touch.
Steven Sugar, as a game nerd, liked to throw in video game references from old and modern stuff to feel like he's inserting what he's enjoying and who he is from moment to moment, while Mary Nash, who related to Sadie as a basement-dwelling young person with cult interests, liked to include stuff from MST3K and cult movies. Pearl's hand gestures get a spotlight too--her reflex to cover her mouth when Pink Diamond was being discussed was analyzed here.
A "Top Secret Visual Timeline" from 2016 is included which tells us some Diamond history. It has an earlier version of Pink Pearl's fate and does not include Spinel since the movie hadn't been greenlit. The timeline includes the birth of the Diamonds, the emergence and major story beats for each major character, and some philosophy of the driving force behind each.
Tumblr media
We're told that Pink Diamond straightened up, behavior-wise, after she lost her first Pearl, and that Yellow and Blue wanted to give her a planet but White only agreed to it to prove she would fail at managing a colony. Pearl, meanwhile, is so confused to have a Diamond who keeps asking her what she thinks when she doesn't believe she should have opinions.
And when Pink moonlighted as Rose to start conflict, she found herself leading an army to fight Pink's troops--then Yellow's, and eventually Blue's too. Lapis is said to be waiting for the conflict to end on Earth so she can terraform, but she gets trapped instead.
Pearl's love story with Rose is described as "an endless honeymoon" where she's free to love her, while Rose's is more like "I'm now the head of the family and I'm going to give everyone what they never had, so everyone is super special!"
Jasper is described as "adopted" into Yellow's army as the only successful Beta Quartz. And White Diamond knew that Pink Diamond was not dead--she thought she was just running away from home like a brat and would eventually be back.
3. THE HEART OF THE CRYSTAL GEMS
Tumblr media
Now we discuss Rose Quartz--the original Pink Diamond. How she was selfish and selfless, never enough and always too much, and how Greg was her first partner who "challenged her" to be an equal. Rebecca describes Rose as being delighted by the idea that both she and Greg reinvented themselves, but when that leads her to want to share her past, Greg isn't interested--he only wants to know who she is now, and doesn't consider the old her to be her.
Rebecca likes Carl Jung's concept of "enantiodromia," which is the idea that extremes lead to their extreme opposite. This is demonstrated in all of the Diamonds. This narrative is interspersed with drawings of Greg and Rose being cute.
But another "heart" of the Crystal Gems is its relationships--particularly, Garnet, the fairy tale romance embodied. More psychological theories are discussed with regard to differentiation in a relationship making the relationship stronger, and how they made sure that happened for Garnet during the appropriate arc. Rebecca has struggled with the idea that she, like Ruby, went straight from a "family" group to a living-with-others situation and never lived by herself. But she also learned that you can in fact develop as a person in the context of a relationship--you don't have to be alone to do it. Ruby learned that too, and chose on her own terms to be with Sapphire.
Tumblr media
The wedding made so much sense to Rebecca and the crew that they couldn't imagine a wholesome couple like Ruby and Sapphire not having a wedding episode. They wanted it for years: The wedding concepts always included the tuxedo for Sapphire and the wedding dress for Ruby.
Tumblr media
But pushback (often blamed on the conservative standards of the international market) led to negotiations trying to keep Ruby and Sapphire's relationship from being explicit. Rebecca and the Crew were very tired of this double standard, and they were especially irritated by attempts to claim a wedding wouldn't be well received by a core demographic or wouldn't make sense for Steven's character. But other shows had done weddings and Steven had been established to love weddings already.
Rebecca kept adding more elements to the wedding episode to answer all the concerns, but she didn't want to back down from explicit marriage between these characters. They deserved it. And the audience deserved to see this as wholesome, like any other cartoon wedding. Eventually they got their way and were allowed to have the wedding. But the ordered episodes were also coming to a close without promise of more, so Rebecca had to request more episodes to be able to wrap up the storyline!
And of course, there is Steven, the true heart of the team. A very interesting aside discusses Garnet's leadership and how the network pushed the Crewniverse to acknowledge Steven as the leader. This was successfully resisted throughout as well--because Garnet is the leader (unless she's incapacitated, of course). It's fantastic that this concept was preserved because too often a young male chosen one is elevated above people with more experience and knowledge because of that chosen one tradition, so it's really nice to have a show acknowledge that team leadership is more appropriate for an adult.
Tumblr media
4. ERA 3
Tumblr media
Beginning with a discussion of the Diamonds, this chapter deconstructs the dysfunctional "family" of the Diamonds (who are said to be based on tropes about evil stepmothers and stepsisters), with the thread of dysfunction originating with White Diamond.
Yellow is physical, Blue is emotional, White is judgmental, and Pink is impulsive. Some philosophy on why Pink is naturally manipulative and why she clashes so much with White is offered.
White believes her identity is to be imposed on all because she is the pinnacle of what should be--and therefore, she has the right to make decisions and statements about and on behalf of everyone. But her secret is that she can't do what the others do--act or feel or want. In trying to be everyone, she is no one.
And this becomes very important when she confronts Steven about his identity and turns out to be wrong. The triumph of Steven being totally, fully himself is a beautiful, simple revelation that's described as far more satisfying than the theories about Pink living inside him or Rose returning from his Gem.
Also discussed is Gem architecture. A lot went into this idea, and Steven Sugar weighs in to say he had to think of what it would mean for a world to have buildings but serve no human needs. That's why it's mostly focused on transport and storage. Even the broken planet is meant to indicate a place stripped for its resources, and everything serves a function that is meant to avoid looking like the human equivalents.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And there's another layer, too: a difference between Era 1 and Era 2. Era 2 became more functional to hide Era 1's broken bits, and older Homeworld buildings still have some "ornate and ancient" feel to them. And the fact that props, tools, and even walls and doors could be living was taken from a concept Rebecca thought was horrible from old Busby Berkeley movies, where people were inanimate objects and it was portrayed as lovely. Tom Herpich helped conceptualize these living objects.
Steven dealing with "princess tropes" is discussed here too. The Pebbles (worked on with Pendleton Ward) were sort of his Cinderella's mice, and all the locked-in-a-tower, having supportive tiny friends help you, getting princess clothes made, attending a ball, having to mind your manners stuff was intentionally related to fairy tales.
The point of doing that (besides fun) was to easily invoke the feeling that Steven was being made to be someone he's not, and that he was being treated like THIS is who he really is when it isn't. White Diamond as the "evil stepmother" is discussed with regard to her detailed features and massive scale. They generally didn't put fingernails and eyelashes on characters (especially not to indicate that they were women or girls!), but they decided White would get all of these feminine markers for tradition's sake.
Tumblr media
Rebecca also invokes several other references that were included and describes the princess tropes as "chipping away at his integrity" setting him up for the final challenge with White.
There is again tons of concept art: Homeworld architecture, Pebbles, Diamond diagrams, background Jades and Lemon Jade Fusion, Comby, Diamond extraction chambers, and White Diamond.
Tumblr media
5. CHANGE YOUR MIND
Tumblr media
Now we finally begin to discuss Steven's identity. The "Perfect Steven," discussed in several interviews before this book's release, was an idea back in 2013; the "ultimate Steven," beefed up and shonen-looking, was far from perfect because OUR Steven is perfect, while this alpha hero Steven idea (used in Steven Universe Future) didn't belong being idolized in such a show.
They thought about having Steven fall apart into organic half and Gem half early in the show (during "Giant Woman" after a successful fusion and unfusion, even!), but they didn't try the concept until the last episode. They didn't want the "Pink" Steven to be portrayed as "better" even though he would be more powerful, so they decided he isn't whole without his organic self and he's just as much of a shell as the organic half. They absolutely did not want any ending that required Rose to be inside him or waiting to come back. But the debates were fierce--what DOES it mean to have Rose's Gem?
Ian Jones-Quartey brings in an anecdote about his own family to emphasize some of the immigrant themes that inspired aspects of the show. He had a brother who reinvented himself elsewhere away from family without resolving issues, and all the ramifications of that were explored in the show through Rose Quartz. (He is careful to say he doesn't think his immigrant experience is like being from another planet!) But he did say you can hurt your old family even if they were toxic or didn't know the real you, and you can hurt your new family by hiding your past. The Pizza family of course was also a more direct reference to Ian's Ghanaian family.
In talking about the new Fusions from this episode, Sunstone is largely described by Miki, who also got to board the Sunstone section. Sunstone was described as a cool 1990s character and the evolution just continued into making them a fourth-wall-breaking PSA dispenser. Obsidian is also discussed, with their sword being an early concept. Steven Sugar said they totally knew it would be forged in action. Obsidian being similar to the Temple design is of course another very early detail.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The story of how James Baxter got involved with one of the final scenes (Organic Steven and Pink Steven fusing in front of White Diamond) was shared. His family was fans of the show and Rebecca Sugar took the time to drive to a birthday party for his daughter and give her a drawing. He then owed her a favor, and this was it.
Tumblr media
Concept art is again included, this time with sample boards, promo images, a Diamond fight concept, costume design changes for the Gems, new Fusions, the so-called "Mega Diamond" ship conglomerate, some scenes from the White Diamond confrontation, Pink Steven, multiple pages of James Baxter animation, corrupted Gems and their healed selves, and photos from the "Change Your Mind" premiere and some awards. The show has won one design-related Emmy, a Peabody Award, and a GLAAD award.

6. STEVEN UNIVERSE FUTURE
Tumblr media
The book doesn't cover the movie because it got its own book, but dives right into Future. Ian Jones-Quartey emphasizes that the movie and Future are separate and different from the original show, which ENDED. After all, after that, Steven has a neck!
Some new names are invoked now: new writers Kate Tsang, Jack Pendarvis, and Taneka Stotts. They were excited to have Steven make HIS OWN mistakes instead of trying to clean up someone else's! Now, instead of doing the usual shonen anime thing and having the final battle be a big physical rumble, Steven has to make peace with himself and take an active role in coping with what all the fighting has done to him and what effect it's had on who he is (and who he wants to be). There is no sudden "I love myself!" answer, either. It's always a process.
Drew Green and Maya Petersen, who came on board as storyboarders officially in Future, also weighed in on writing for a "mature" show, how to deal with Steven being a "moral compass" while being sort of unreliable, and what they learned as Crew that they didn't know as fans. Drew didn't know Garnet never asks questions. Jack didn't realize the show never deviated from Steven's point of view. Taneka was nervous but excited to collaborate. Kate was worried about how established the show was and what to do as a new writer to contribute appropriately.
Maya was on the old Crew but not as a storyboarder, so felt like some of the "old" ideas ended up not being appropriate for the "new" Future in an embarrassing way--and dreaded the idea of dealing with Steven's emotional problems when they were similar to stuff she'd been through. She also was personally behind the idea of Steven wanting to dump his problems by becoming Stevonnie, and got to work with Etienne Guignard on inventing the Pearl creation backstory with Volleyball.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's some discussion of "depression hobbies," stress, and the show's pacing. And they say Etienne was entertaining at pitches. There's even some discussion of how Greg is taken off a bit of a pedestal because his terrible restrictive life in the suburbs sounded wholesome to Steven and Greg presented it negatively.
And then there is some information about how the Crew felt behind the scenes due to fan reactions and negative press. Ian discusses feeling offended when the Black characters are described as bad examples, as if their cartoonized but realistic-in-context features are automatically caricatures.
Rebecca Sugar felt beaten down by some of these narratives and began to access mental health services, inspiring some of the content of "Mindful Education." A long reflection from Rebecca discusses people's infighting about her show and what she had a responsibility to show or not show in the story. She learned a lot about bullying from Cartoon Network's anti-bullying program and learned that bullies thrive on whatever attention you give them--unless it is made clear to them by a peer group that no one is impressed by their cruel actions. Also, not all negative feedback is bullying. Constructive criticism is different. Self-awareness can help you avoid internalizing what bullies might do or say to you.
Segueing from the discussion of how people are affected by and connect with the show, we then discuss how they chose as a team what should be covered as the show came to a close. They didn't have time to do quite a few stories they wanted time for, like a Rhodonite story, a Lars side story, and Diamond "prehistory" and religion; all of it was put aside for the main arc with Steven.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They thought people would find those stories about Homeworld and Off Color history very interesting, but so much of the show had been about Steven's Gem adventures, so keeping him mostly on Earth seemed appropriate. The acknowledgment of his battle damage, of his trauma, was necessary and real, and helpful in an important way to the core audience.
Oh, and there was some stuff about a cheeseburger tree. Don't ask.
In discussing the "reverse escapism" of the original show (Gem aliens are intrigued by everyday human culture, and realism is necessary), Rebecca says her views have changed on escapism and gets why some people want a soothing feel-better show. She acknowledged also that her own escapist dreams-come-true fulfilled in the show didn't feel like escapism because they were givens to the majority of mainstream culture, but were never guaranteed to marginalized people.
Rebecca ties in her several-times-told story about "Love Like You" and how the middle bit was when she didn't feel she was worth looking up to, and the realizations she had to tie the beginning to the end. Feeling like someone will like you less if they know you more is terrible. So sometimes a show like this can be helpful in telling people that they belong when their fantasies are things like "I want to be loved" and "I want to know I exist."
In Future, Steven has to connect to who he is and love that person--and understand that person enough to finally feel that even if he's not fixing their problems or saving their world right this second, Steven deserves his family's love and support, and they WANT to give it to him.
There's a huge amount of supplemental material in this section so there's no way I could name it all. The charts for Future's timeline are pretty straightforward, though a few episodes like "A Very Special Episode," "Why So Blue," "In Dreams," and "Bismuth Casual" aren't specifically represented and a couple are in a different order ("Prickly Pair" was conceived as happening after "Fragments" and "Homeworld Bound").
Steven feeling like a monster, having intrusive thoughts, having not forgiven the Diamonds, and getting help/moving on--it's all there.
Tumblr media
We have keys, color scripts, and boards for the new opening and some various backgrounds and storyboard art from episodes. Model sheets for Shep, Nice Lapis and Mean Lapis, Jasper, Steven Tag Gems, Pink Steven Powers, Monster Steven. New house concepts, Era 3 Homeworld concept art for the Diamond environments, and background art for the Reef.
New Connie and Greg designs. Concepts for Mega Pearl, the Rose Quartzes, Bluebird, and Morganite (who didn't get used). And there are some photos from recording and the conference room. There are even some extras from "Crossover Nexus," the crossover with OK K.O.!--including an unused cut scene that included Ruby and Sapphire fighting. The rest of the book is a bunch of adorable Crewniverse art--extras, blog drawings, promos, and gifts to each other.
NOTABLE
1.
The first timeline chart in the book features a cool sketch of the original Off Colors, which at the time this planning document was drafted included unused Off Colors Flint and Chert.
We knew of their existence already because of an episode of the podcast, but these two unexpectedly appeared as incidental characters in the Steven Universe Future episode "Homeworld Bound," identified only in the credits. Sad to think that instead of banding with the Off Colors, these two were probably shattered for their crime (being Quartzes who don't want to fight) and that's why we see them being repaired in this episode. Later, there's some brainstorming for types of Off Colors and "a Ruby that wants to wear limb enhancers" is mentioned as well.
2.
It looks like there was also originally more juice to the story of tracking down the events of the war culminating in Pink Diamond's assassination.
One of the timelines talks about Steven thinking it makes sense that Pearl can't talk about her involvement because she might have been a double agent, explaining why Rose Quartz always knew what Pink Diamond was doing. It seems like that bit was supposed to be included in Garnet's version of the story she believed in "Your Mother and Mine." Seems like they originally conceived Garnet's story to inspire the Off Colors to become pirates and freedom fighters, though in the show's canon this storytelling happened after Lars had already reinvented himself the way he did.
Sadie was also supposed to be sending letters to Lars via Steven, which is funny since the "Letters to Lars" episode is just a montage Steven letter. And of course it's specified that Steven was supposed to get Pink Diamond flashbacks by going to the Palace on Homeworld.
3.
The second chart in the book makes references to Sadie's reinvention of herself as a parallel to Lars, Greg, and Pink Diamond all doing the same thing, and how positive it is to embrace such a thing--a version of yourself that YOU create.
I love that Yellow Diamond's arm ship arm-wrestling the Cluster was always part of the plan.
There's some more explicit direction to have Connie help Steven understand the Diamonds as "strict parents," and a lot more emphasis on everyone realizing Rose had been inspired by THEM rather than them all following her.
White Diamond is presented here as if she thinks of Pink Diamond as a "daughter" (whom she now understands she has "lost"). There are notes on how the Diamonds have a responsibility to their children and should attend to it before just continuing to make more.
4.
One of the concept art images for the Off Colors features Rhodonite crouching by Padparadscha saying "Don't worry, I won't let them hurt you." It's very interesting because she DOES seem to protect Padparadscha in the show, but doesn't seem confident about it in her final version, even though it does seem like she'd be "programmed" to guard aristocratic Gems because of her Ruby and Pearl makeup. Cool.
5.
A "Crew Cameos" spread was included, which is of great interest to some of us who loved seeing the Crew insert themselves into the show. Not every SU Crew person who's been represented in a crowd was there, but this crowd included Amish Kumar, Kat Morris, Amanda Winterstein, Angie Wang, Lamar Abrams, Emily Walus, Mary Nash, Joe Johnston, Christy Cohen, Danny Cragg, Hilary Florido, Danny Hynes, Matt Burnett, Ben Levin, Elle Michalka.
Tumblr media
6.
The official national flower of South Korea, Hibiscus syriacus, is the name of Pink Diamond's flower.
7.
One of Steven Sugar's comments about the silhouette difference between humans and Gems points out that humans have ears. This seems to be pretty good confirmation that they are not supposed to have ears, despite that sometimes we'll see ears drawn on them in some frames.
8.
Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond is characterized in this book as "self-hating" in a really interesting way, saying that because she believed she was not capable of compassion, she practically worshiped those who demonstrated that ability and thought they were so much better than her--which is described as "intoxicating" and resulted in others being drawn to her. How interesting is that!
9.
Timelines reveal that early plans for Pink Diamond's first Pearl originally had her getting destroyed by Pink during  a game, and then her destruction was rewritten as a punishment from the Diamonds after Pink Pearl defended Pink Diamond to the other Diamonds. They went back to the idea of her getting hurt by Pink for the final version, though the cracked face and control by White Diamond was not on the agenda until they started writing "Change Your Mind."
10.
The approximate ages of the major characters, based on emergence, are revealed on these timelines. It begins with a cracked-planet-looking graphic depicting four tiny Diamonds emerging at 20,000 years ago. Some suspicious "blacked out" redacting surrounds a long timeline tail that goes back before that, which may mean there are secrets they still don't want to reveal. But the dates go like this:
20,000 years ago: The Diamonds emerge.
11,000 years ago: Pearl is custom-made for Pink Diamond.
8,000 years ago: Sapphire emerges (on Homeworld).
6,000 years ago: Ruby emerges (on a colony).
5,750 years ago: Garnet is formed.
5,600 years ago: Lapis is poofed and put in the mirror.
5,200 years ago: Jasper emerges (on Earth).
5,050 years ago: The Cluster is planted.
5,000 years ago: Amethyst emerges (on Earth).
4,500 years ago: The Crystal Gems found Amethyst.
3,000 years ago: Peridot emerges (on Homeworld).
40 years ago: Pearl found Lapis's mirror at the Galaxy Warp.
And of course we know 14 years ago Steven is born!
11.
Originally the Diamonds were based on a quartet of themes: Love, Fear, Pride, and Sorrow. It got too complicated to keep and it was abandoned, with Pink's identification of "love" being described as "particularly outdated."
12.
Notes on a sketch say that Pearl was inspired to become bold and unashamed because Pink's questions drove her to have opinions, and it's said that Rose "fell in love" with her boldness.
13.
Rebecca tells the story of driving off a ridge and getting stuck in the desert, comparing this to Ruby's tumble during her Wild West adventure and using it as inspiration. She's told this story before but here it is in print. She also included the story about using the flowers from a friend's wedding to put in Ruby's hair.
14.
Rebecca describes having to "fight" notes she was given when it had to do with Ruby and Sapphire's relationship. One she describes as NOT fighting was for a signing card depicting Ruby and Sapphire dancing. It was called "too romantic" and she decided not to worry about it since it wasn't the actual show content.
She was also scolded over her book The Answer because the powers that be expected her to downplay that relationship. She always argued that queer youth deserved these things.
Tumblr media
15.
Tom Herpich describes being inspired to name Blue Diamond's comb "Comby" because he was watching the news about Comey getting fired from the FBI. It's also a mineral-related term and I always assumed that reference was intentional, but maybe it's not and this is the only intended significance to Comby's name?
16.
Rainbow Quartz 2.0's design is not discussed, though the other two new Fusions from "Change Your Mind" (Sunstone and Obsidian) were. RQ2 has some sketches included, but no accompanying narrative in the text.
17.
A sheet of corrupted Gems and their healed selves is offered, though it doesn't appear to be final. The obelisk in "Serious Steven" is labeled Albite. The unnamed Worm Monster, Desert Glass, and Watermelon Tourmaline are included. An unnamed birdlike Gem represents the Big Bird monster from "Giant Woman." The crab monster from "Arcade Mania" is labeled Blue Chalcedony. The Tongue Monster is drawn uncorrupted but not named. The Flower Monster from "Back to the Kindergarten" is labeled Grossular Diopside or Titanite. The invisible monster from "Island Adventure" is labeled Moonstone. The Lighthouse Gem is labeled White Topaz. A form for Larimar that was used in "Change Your Mind" but changed in Future is there. The Slinker is listed as Chrysocolla. And the Crab Monster is listed as Aventurine.
On the next page, this is changed to Bixbite (as it was in Steven Universe Future), and we then also have Lace Amethyst, Blue Lace Agate, Crazy Lace Agate (Fusion), Ocean Jasper, the Mother Centipeetle Nephrite (Facet 413 Cabochon 12) and three other Nephrites, Angel Aura Quartz, a hooded Jasper, Zebra Jasper, Biggs Jasper, Watermelon Tourmaline (labeled as Fusion of Gem * Onion--huh?), Snowflake Obsidian, "Little" Larimar, and Orange Spodumene (who was the Worm).
Tumblr media
18.
The Rhodonite side story would have been about the love story of a Ruby and a Pearl working for Morganite. Images of Morganite and her servants, unfused, are in the book. We do not get this additional information, but Rebecca said in a panel shortly before the book's release that Rhodonite's story would have been about finding out that she had been Rejuvenated 17 times because her components kept falling in love and needing to be reset.
Tumblr media
19.
Referring to the Diamonds on one of the charts, Steven's perspective is "I can't believe I helped these" and then there's a censor bar. Welp.
20.
Some included art by Hilary Florido features Kevin with a souped-up Koala Princess car and another where Kevin is staring at himself in the mirror in front of an altar to himself.
21.
Rebecca's sweater collection is included in the Crew art.

fuck february, amiright?
i thought january was bad. but february. february was the stuff of nightmares. my cousin passed away from covid (you can read about her here; she was really an amazing person and i feel so lucky to have known her). i was finally formally diagnosed with PCOS (bittersweet, i guess). my car broke down. i took two (2) days off and it took me two and a half weeks to get caught up again. i can only hope march treats us all a little more gently.
the good news is, i finished revisions on my short story collection to send to my agent, finished workshop submissions for the semester, and now i can return to my first love, fanfiction. that i am constantly working through original fiction to return to fanfiction has been making me think a lot about the nature of a creative, capital-p Project. so, this month’s BTALA (been thinkin a lot about) is going to inspect the concept of a “project.”
new resource
last month i unveiled a folder of my favorite short stories which i’m pleased to hear several of you have perused and gotten some inspiration from. this month i’ve compiled my favorite personal essays. there are fewer essays than there are short stories because i’ve broken them into two groups: personal and craft. next month i hope to have the craft essays compiled.
i’m always looking for more things to love, so if you have recommendations for your favorite short stories and essays, i’d be happy to hear them!
writing-related posts
how to physically maneuver the revision process
the difference between M and E ratings of fic
resources for worldbuilding (check out the reblogs for more!)
a couple syntax/prose book recs
how to break a long work into chapters
march availability
unfortunately i have to cut my coaching hours down a bit, so i don’t have any openings left in march, but i have some availability in april. if you’re interested in a writing consultation, please fill out this google form!
you can learn more about my services on my carrd.
what i’m into rn
for the past year, i’ve basically been trapped in a 10x10 room, and my health is definitely reflecting that, both mentally (does anyone else feel like they’re living in groundhog day? just, every day being exactly the same except fractionally worse than the day before??) and physically (i reorganized the kitchen and could barely move for two days).
reader, i have discovered something called “walking,” in which i put on real human shoes and go outside. it feels strange, bestial. neighbors wave hello to me. a harrowing experience.
while doing this, this walking, i’ve been listening to the lolita podcast which a friend recommended to me, a ten-episode series that dives into everything lolita: the novel itself, its context, adaptations, greater cultural responses, and — as a sticker on my laptop says — vladimir “russian dreamboat” nabokov. as far as i can tell it seems well-researched and presents the many perspectives of lolita in a fair way. i’m only a few eps in, but i’m entranced so far. highly recommended if you, like me, have a complicated relationship with lolita.
i’ve also found myself mildly addicted to a mobile otome game called obey me, which. look i know it’s like the definition of cringe but it’s also mind-numbingly fun and if i want to spend my minimal free time pretending 7 demon brothers are all vying for my affection then that’s between me and god. it’s a lot of what i loved about WoW: frequent events, bright colors, a daily to do list of simple but satisfying tasks, many many rewards, and it doesn’t take itself very seriously. and if i have 4k fic written of mammon/reader that’s nobody’s business but mine and my longsuffering ao3 subscribers.
i’m telling you this because i don’t know anyone else who plays it and am desperate to trade headcanons. so if you play, or start playing, hit me up!! i will give u mad tips and daily AP.
been thinkin a lot about
the project. the project. even the word “project.” PROject (noun). proJECT (verb). what is the project? “project” comes from the latin pro and jacare which means “to throw forward,” or projectum which means “something prominent.” a projector throws forward an image. to project onto something means to throw your perspective onto something else. to embark on a project is to make something prominent in your life. the concept of “the projects” comes from public housing projects, the government throwing forward affordable housing.
what is the project? in joseph harris’ essay “coming to terms” he says that “to define the project of a writer is…to push beyond his text, to hazard a view about not only what someone has said but also what he was trying to accomplish by saying it.” harris’ perspective is that of an english teacher encouraging his students to read critically, not just to summarize a text but to find its project, its greater purpose. and while i first read this essay in a seminar on composition pedagogy, it stuck with me as a writer. it made me reconsider the greater nature of the creative project.
how many of us, if asked to describe our writing project, would begin with a plot or character premise, the nuts and bolts of a specific story? maybe even the working title? but i wonder, is breaking out the plot really the project? is the discipline of sitting down and typing really the project? and when the story is finished, is the project over? what is the project?
in 2019, i wrote 86k words of a novel. i began revising that novel last fall, and i’m finding that i’ll probably keep maybe less than 10k of that initial draft. i’m not bothered by that. the novel i wrote before that started at 125k, then i rewrote the entire thing to 200k, then i whittled it back down to 160k, and next i’ll be tasked with paring it back down to 80k. i’m not bothered by that either. in the past five years or so i’ve written about 2 million words, and i’ve only published 20k of them. only 1% of what i’ve written, i’ve published. in the words of lauren cooper (catherine tate), i’m not bothered.
i used to see publication as the birth of the project, and writing it akin to a long gestation period. then i saw publication as the death of the project, and its life was lived in its drafting. now, publication seems irrelevant to the project. the confines of a story and its many revisions are also irrelevant to the project. the beginning of a story is not the start of the project and the end of the story is not the end of the project. the project is larger than the story, its revisions, its publication, and its eventual readership.
i think it took me so long to see this because for so many years i was still in my first project, the sex project, an exploration of trauma and sexual identity, which began in 2014 with destiel fanfiction, endured through many fandom shifts, my MFA, years adrift as an adjunct, all the way through 2020 with the completion of my short story collection. i used to wonder how anyone could write about anything other than sex. to me it was the only topic worth my attention. i was certain that i would spend my entire life being a sex writer and i’d never find fulfillment writing a young adult sci fi adventure or a highly literary novel about complicated family dynamics. i was baffled by people who were interested in other things, who could write entire novels without using the word “cock” even once.
then my sex project ended. i don’t know when exactly it happened or why, but suddenly i realized i never wanted to write another artful description of an orgasm or find a tactful euphemism for a vagina ever again (personally i prefer “wet cunt” because not only is it blunt, i find it phonetically pleasing). obviously i’m still writing explicit fanfic but it doesn’t feel the same as it used to. sex feels more sidelined to me, even if it’s still the center and drive of a fic. i no longer get any personal satisfaction from writing it, although i do get satisfaction in sharing the work for readers to enjoy.
it’s like i’ve somehow solved the biggest puzzle of my life. or i guess made peace with my meanest monster, that extremely complicated double-mind of desire that some non-sex-repulsed asexuals feel: you want to feel desire you can’t actually feel so you write it into fiction, to try to understand this thing you can’t have and which society tells you you’re missing, and you don’t even know if you don’t have it, because you still feel desire for affection and intimacy, and maybe even a desire to be desired. and for those of us who are asexual and have c-ptsd, sex you don’t actually want (but don’t know you don’t want, because maybe you’re ambivalent and mildly curious and touch-starved) and an unrelenting drive toward people-pleasing can be a dangerous combination. how can you ever know what consent is if you always put other people’s desires above your own?
maybe i’m alone in this. maybe i’m not. maybe for most people, wanting sex is a light switch: yes i want it, or no i don’t. but for me, i had to write a whole lot of words to figure out things like desire, consent, intimacy, forgiveness, the shape that good love takes. the lengthy theoretical flowchart of “i might be interested in having sex if this and this and this and this and this happens in this exact order and under these exact circumstances.”
it was hard to write something into reality that i have never seen except in pieces, in subtext i clung to with no lexicon to give it shape and meaning. te lawrence in lawrence of arabia. some of tarantino’s early work. the film benny and joon. and weirdly, the star wars prequels (that one’s hard to explain; i’ll spare you). i don’t think the sex project was about coming to terms with my asexuality as much as it was trying to organize my thoughts and feelings by continuously rendering my own experiences within a greater, shinier ideal — like how you sometimes have to unravel the entire skein of yarn to find the loose end, and only then can you get started.
i guess i’m in the infancy of the power project now. i’m moving toward themes of control, infamy, greatness. the exact circumstances in which atrocity occurs. how people rise into leadership and fall from grace. the consequences of success. i don’t know why this project has come to me, or what, if anything, it has to do with me. i’m not famous and have no intention of becoming famous; i don’t have social power or influence, at least not beyond my little corner of fandom, and i’m not interested in having it. and yet, here we are, already hundreds of thousands of words in.
my fics digging for orchids (tgcf) and a standing engagement (the hunger games) deal with the detriments of fame. and even float (breaking bad) to a degree is about the aftermath of being so close to power. my novel cherry pop, loosely based on macbeth, is about an ongoing power exchange between two teenage girls. my other novel, vandal, is about a girl who believes she has magic powers and casts a spell on her neighbor to fall in love with her. and i’m in the very early stages of a novel called groundswell, a cult story i’ve been wanting to write for years. i had no idea why i couldn’t write it until i realized it wasn’t yet my project. i’m not even to the stage of developing characters, let alone a premise or plot. i’m still just building my aesthetic pile (i discuss the aesthetic pile here, as well as vandal in more detail), watching documentaries on cults, reading books, finding inspiration, marking down ideas as they come. it may be years before i’m ready to sit down and write it.
now that i know what the project is, i have more patience with myself. it doesn’t bother me to rewrite a novel from the beginning, or to scrap novels altogether, because the story isn’t the project. the project cannot be diminished by cutting words, sentences, paragraphs, entire chapters. the project does not have a product. the project cannot be published. the project is in the practice, in dragging the impossibly large into clear, acute existence, so you can see it. so you can see the very center of what you thought was an unknowable thing.

Clyde x Sherri (Non-Linear Series)
Content: Clyde has a not-so-good day at work and just wants to love on his wife. Freaky-fluff. Praise. Gets a little rough later. Unprotected sex. Aftercare.
I jumped straight to the freaky lol
Tumblr media
Image Description: Generated text message from “Sherri’s iPhone”. Clyde is saved under “Honeybunch”. Clyde texts Sherri: “I should be home in about twenty minutes, Babygirl.”  Sherri responds: “Okay, honey.” Then, Clyde comes back with “I want you naked and spread open on the couch when I get there.” Sherri sends a shocked face emoji then contests with “I’m cooking dinner!” Clyde: “Turn off the stove and get naked.” Sherri asks, “Can I at least shower first?” Finally, Clyde says, “You can do whatever you want. But you better be on the sofa when I open the door.”
[End description]
____________________
Sherri turned off every burner, moved every pot and pan, and dashed upstairs to the bathroom. She hopped in the shower, scrubbed herself like Lunette the Clown, and hopped back out. She almost put on some lingerie but Clyde said “naked” and he seemed like he meant business. So, off to the sofa she went--naked as a jaybird, smelling of her Palmer’s cocoa butter lotion and the honeysuckle fragrance that Clyde loved so much. At exactly 6:04, Clyde walked through the door without acknowledging her. He just took off his jacket, hung it up, and walked to the sofa.
“Open ‘em up,” he said. Sherri opened her legs as Clyde fell to his knees and ran his tongue up her clit. He hummed at the taste and Sherri ran her fingers through his hair.
“Had a long day today,” he said. Suuuuuuck.
“Mmph!” Sherri moaned, gripping Clyde’s hair. “You wanna talk about it?”
He closed his eyes and licked patterns up, down, around, and across her pretty flesh. “This is me talkin’ about it.”
Clyde licked and sucked his pretty lil’ flower...excruciatingly slow if you asked Sherri. He added no fingers and only changed the pace slightly. Sherri started gyrating her hips against his mouth, but he held her legs by the backs of her knees.
“Be patient, Babygirl…”
“Why are you going so slow?” Sherri asked, voice pleading.
“Wanna savor you,” he said. He gave her clit another long suck. “Wanna enjoy my meal.”
Kiss. Lick. Suck.
Eventually, Clyde picked up the pace--lapping up Sherri’s juices, catching the honey that drizzled onto the folds of her labia. Then, he leaned back to get a good look at his work--her glistening clit throbbed for him. Her inner folds had pushed her outer lips back, begging for more--begging to be seen by Clyde’s hungry eyes. He let go of her left leg and rubbed her pussy with his opened palm. His eyes met Sherri’s--black pupils having made her dark brown irises disappear.
“Love comin’ home to you,” he said. Suddenly, Sherri felt a finger being buried inside of her. Her eyes clamped shut and she threw her head back as he moved it in and out. “Look at me.”
Sherri opened her eyes just as Clyde inserted another finger. Her bottom lip fell and her eyes narrowed--the lust in his eyes just too much. Her nipples began to harden.
“Love comin’ home to that pretty face. Your cookin’. Love your hips and your ass and your legs bein’ the first thing I see when I walk in the kitchen. Then you turn around to flash that pretty smile at me…”
Sherri wanted to close her eyes again. Too much! It was all too much.
“Love the way your pussy sucks me in like it don’t want me to leave. My fingers. My dick…”
“Fuck,” Sherri whimpered. She involuntarily clenched around his fingers.
“Love when it gets to talkin’ to me,” he added. He pulled his fingers out, then dipped them back in, making a squelching sound.
Sherri whined and clenched again, her “other” hole squeezing around nothing. Clyde smiled.
“I like it when that happens, too,” he said. “When I make you so weak and needy that your lil’ asshole starts beggin’ for some attention, too.”
“Clyde!” Sherri shouted. He looked up at her. “Fuck me, please!”
He looked back down at her pussy and continued fingering her. No reaction. No change in facial expression.
“I’m too pent up, Babygirl,” he finally said. “I wanna enjoy you. Don’t wanna hurt you.”
Sherri grabbed Clyde’s hair again and gripped it. “I don’t give a fuck. Give me some dick.” ____________________
With his bionic fingers pressing into her waist and a fist full of her coils, Clyde fucked Sherri into the chaise of their sectional. He was behind her as her palms and knees pressed into the cushion--her feet dangling off the side of the sofa. Obscene squelching and slapping sounds echoed throughout the living room--fighting to drown out Clyde’s grunts and groans, and Sherri’s moans and whimpers. Clyde moaned every time Sherri squeezed his length--and every twitch of his dick made her grip the fabric beneath her fingers.
“Fuck...where do you want it Babygirl?” he asked.
“You know where,” Sherri mumbled. “In me...all in me...”
Clyde let go of her hair, held on to her hips with both hands, and slowed his thrusts. He pushed in and dragged out...once more, twice more, and on the third drag away from her warmth, he filled her up with a warmth of his own. When he pulled out, some of it started to drip out of her, but he released her right hip and stuffed it back in. Then, he let go of both of her hips and watched her fall forward. Her shoulders moved up and down as she caught her breath, and her thighs shook.
Clyde grabbed his pants and boxers and left Sherri on the sofa. She didn’t even care. She was too busy trying to piece together this moment. Finally, Sherri got up and walked to the stairs. As she stepped on the landing and looked up, Clyde’s foot landed on the first step. He was dressed in fresh sweatpants and a T-shirt and carrying a stack of clothing.
“Gon’ in the bathroom down there,” he said.
Sherri did as Clyde commanded, and decided to relieve herself, as well. Clyde came in, placed the stack of clothing on the edge of the sink, and grabbed two washcloths that were on top of it all. He ran the hot water, wet the washcloths, and wiped Sherri’s sweaty face with one. Then, they switched. Sherri went to the sink to wash her hands, and Clyde sat on the toilet. When she dried her hands, Clyde summoned her to him.
Sherri stood in front of him and Clyde wiped her lower body--over her thighs and between them. He motioned for her to turn around, and wiped over all areas of her ass. Of course, he couldn’t resist planting a kiss on her striped right cheek. He tossed the cloth onto the sink with the other, then grabbed a pair of her underwear from the stack--just some regular cotton briefs. She took them and held on to his shoulders as she pulled them on. Then, he helped her into her sweatpants and a T-shirt. He kissed her lips, and directed her to the living room.
Sherri sat on the sofa as Clyde took the washcloths upstairs to the hamper. Then, he came back downstairs.
“What were you cooking?” he asked.
“Grilled chicken breast, asparagus...” she had to let her brain defog some more. “...and red potatoes.”
Clyde nodded and went into the kitchen. Then, Sherri turned on the television. She heard Clyde moving the pots and pans around, then heard his feet ascend on her again. He kissed the side of her forehead.
“Love you.” “Love you more,” Sherri responded. Then, he went back into the kitchen and finished cooking dinner. ____________________ TAG LIST @aloneandsleepless @direnightshade @finn-ray-nal-beads @a-true-janian-reply @thegreenmatt @sister-winter73 @loewsy55 @mariesackler @clydes-hole @sydneyssmut @kirah36 @lovelyyandtired @morby @tsarinastorm If you want to be tagged in future Clyde x Sherri posts, comment below! - Promote myself with it everywhere
- Publish books with it (art books, etc.)
- Display it everywhere to my liking (website, social media, etc.)
- Post it wherever I want
The buyer is allowed to:
Use the commissioned piece for personal use unless agreed otherwise (you can upload it on all your social media profiles, forums, etc.)
Print the artwork and claim the character(s) as their own, but not the artwork itself.
Use the artwork to promote themselves. You are not forced to give me credit when you post it but it is very appreciated.
Use the artwork on their Youtube channel and in monetized videos as long as the artwork itself is not the main subject for the earnings.
The following is considered copyright infringement:
Reproducing/using the copyrighted artwork commercially - means making money off it in any way.
Claiming the artwork as your own
Removing my signature from the artwork
Altering the artwork without my consent

If you have a problem with anything in regards to the commissioned piece please tell me right away so we can find a solution together.
I am willing to change some of my terms for you if you ask before I start on your commission. If you, e.g., do not want me to post your art anywhere, we can discuss this.
Refund/Cancellation Policy
The buyer is not allowed a refund once I started working on the commission.
If for any reason I am unable to start your commission you will receive a full refund.
If you cancel your order before I started it, you can get a full refund.
If you are getting a refund, do not request a Paypal chargeback. I will transfer the money back to you myself.
If you request a Paypal chargeback at any point when you were not allowed to ask for a refund you will lose all before mentioned rights to the commissioned piece and I will have the full right to profit further from it in any way. I will decline the chargeback and supply Paypal with our conversations in which we talk about the commission as evidence that I have completed work for you. Furthermore, you will be blacklisted for commissioning me again.
If the buyer breaks any of the points stated above they will lose all the before mentioned rights to the artwork commissioned by me, Nova Taylor (the artist), and I will have the right to profit further from the commissioned artwork in any way I see fit. If you have a problem with any of these statements, they may be changed if discussed with me prior to paying your commissioned piece.
