Top 6 Episodes of One Piece
If there's a series that attempts to test the diminishing return hypothesis, it's One Piece. The monstrous epic of Eiichiro Oda is the highest selling manga of all time, but its ridiculous duration still prohibits many people from checking it out, and that hill will only get steeper as we barrel towards its end (eventually).
The One Piece anime, which is a much greater commitment to time and does not boast the brilliant artwork of Oda as a selling point, is even more of a conundrum. Yet, for the first time, so many fans perceive the story this way and fall in love regardless... Over the course of many long binges, there is something special about cuddling up in front of a screen and getting lost in a world, and the powerful spirit that burns just below the surface, even during the not-so-hot days of the anime, still keeps us building up to a new "best" chapter. Everyone has their favorite shows, the ones they feel emotionally attached to, and we would love to share yours in the forums with you. Here are my own 6 best One Piece episodes, in chronological order (but not superlative):
Episode 19 - The Three-Sword Style's Past! Zoro and Kuina's Vow!
Tumblr media
In the modern age, where the manga is so informative and comprehensive, it's hard to believe that there was once a period when the anime really successfully expanded on the plot. The anime version of Zoro's flashback is so amazing that it is the "true" version of the story in my heart, which comes a little later than it did in the manga. What once was a fast and blunt page is turned into a wonderful piece of sound, letting us live for an episode in the Japanese countryside as we hear the story of a young Roronoa Zoro and his original opponent, Kuina.
In its obsession with gender, this episode also ends up being easily the most empathic the show has ever gotten. It portrays Kuina, the prodigal swordsman, dissatisfied with the awareness that the gap in intensity between her and Zoro will increase drastically as they become adults. This is a moment for a young Zoro to take seriously his female rival, and in the present day, Tashigi finally takes up whatever thematic baggage is left behind by her death. This is One Piece's tender side at its finest.
Episode 119 - Secret of Powerful Swordplay! Ability to Cut Steel and the Rhythm Things Have!
Tumblr media
This is another fantastic episode of Zoro that places us in the middle of the Straw Hats and Baroque Works' climate war. The adversary of Zoro is Mr. 1, who really isn't a swordsman, but a man who can turn his entire body into a weapon. Not only does Dice-Dice Fruit from Mr. 1 allow for some of the anime's imagination, but this episode manages to offer one of the coolest battles in the entire series. It's bloody, it's raw, and Zoro throws a guy into a building.
Towards the end, the episode is at its best, when everything gets quiet and builds up to the final blow. It sells the show with so much conviction that I believe it's cool. I believe this is one of the series's most driven episodes, and a great example of the show's cinematic narrative eye.
Episode 278 - Say You Want to Live! We Are Your Friends!
Tumblr media
If 151 was the episode that made me a fan, the episode that made me a lifetime fan is 278. This episode and the one before it are older examples of "one-hour specials" from the series, which are gradually split into two episodes until released on home video and streaming sites. This episode is jam-packed even as just the second half of a special, as we conclude the tragic backstory of Robin and transition into the present where the Straw Hats make their greatest gesture yet to save their friend from the greedy World Government.
One Piece can become astonishingly sad for being such a vibrant and enjoyable series, to the point that it almost competes with itself to see how unhappy it can get. If the highs were not so gosh darn consistent, these lows would become tiresome, and Straw Hats' assault on the government flag, followed by Robin's major "I want to live!" One of the most cathartic moments you'll ever find in literature is the scene. At this point in the plot, the Straw Hats are still underdogs, so their bold "never give up" attitude in the face of their greatest enemy hits particularly hard. This episode illustrates the chasms that One Piece can jump to be the saddest and happiest tale it can be, from baby Robin surviving the genocide of everyone she's ever loved to adult Robin pleading for another chance at life.
Episode 396 - The Fist Explodes! Destroy the Auction!
Tumblr media
In One Piece, Luffy punches a Celestial Dragon so hard that he knocks the color off the screen, still one of the most frequently referenced and applauded moments. If there is one thing that One Piece is unbelievably good at, it's payoffs. It sets the pins up so that in the most bombastic way possible it can knock them down. To this day, the Celestial Dragons are the most heinous villains we've seen in One Piece, and the repercussions of (again) defying the World Government are obvious, but Luffy still has to do his thing with Luffy.
The emphasis that the show places on Luffy's pledge to Hatchan not to intervene, no matter what, is what really captures me about this moment. You get the feeling that Luffy is the kind to keep an earnest promise, but watching a hero get pushed beyond that stage is always fascinating.
Episode 574 - Back to the Present! Hordy Makes a Move!
Tumblr media
The general opinion, as far as I can tell, is that Fishman Island is the series' worst arc. With this sentiment, I don't agree. I think it's one of the heaviest, most three-dimensional instances I've ever seen of fantasy-world-racism-as-metaphor-for-real-world-racism. Basically, the mid-arc flashback covering the plights of Fisher Tiger and Queen Otohime is a film-length drama, and it's one of the series' best flashbacks, for which there's fierce competition. It's very underestimated.
Aside from being an exceptionally pretty episode, both halves of it are extremely strong, one at the tail end of the flashback and one coming out of it. Neptune mourning the death of his wife, distraught that the difficulty of race relations implies that he can not convey his frustration, is a great scene, as is the forgiveness of Jimbei by Nami for his connection to the pirates of Arlong. The push and pull between hope, cynicism, remorse, rage, and love is what makes this arc perfect. You just ever feel like you're halfway through everything life's going to bring you through, even at its worst. As for its place in the big picture plot, this episode is a significant step in the relationship of Jimbei with the pirates of the Straw Hat, and it establishes the purpose of the Ryugu Kingdom to join the World Government and attend the Reverie, a heavily built-up political event that is due in the manga any day now.
Episode 616 - A Surprising Outcome! White Chase vs. Vergo!
Tumblr media
This is a particular stand-out episode in the series for fighting animation, since it's so much more physical than normal. Even with the powers of Smoker and Vergo flying every way, the effect goes down to their good ole fists. The personal investment between two marines duking it out is already very intense, but it's put over the edge by the great choreography and style, and that alone would put such an episode on my radar.
That said, once Smoker vs. Vergo turns over to Vergo vs. Rule, there is a cherry on top, with the real villain of the arc, Doflamingo, listening in from a distance. The rest of the series gives too much consequence to the law defeating Vergo in such an over-the-top manner.
So those are the episodes I feel are worth revisiting the most! Obviously, I'm expected to have skipped a few or omitted incredibly significant episodes in this top six list, with a series that long. If you enjoyed this top list of mine don’t forget to leave a like and share it with your friends. If you have any suggestions for my next top list just mail it to me at [email protected] and i will feature you for my next article. Stay tuned and stay safe everyone!

Chapter 94 screencaps
It’s been a long time coming, but the 151-page chapter Murata has been working on is just about done!   While he’s been streaming on occasion, he’s streamed far less than usual, and more than 100 pages are yet to be seen.   Even though the last chapter came out on 22nd June,  it’s taken him juust over a month to do 150 pages, which means that Murata took a nice break from OPM in between, awesome.
I’ve only a few pics, but what the hey, let’s go!
First things first, the ‘support’ heroes that Sicchi worried so much about are doing better than we initially thought.  They’re still under overwhelming pressure from the sheer number of monsters, but just look at them go!
I had no idea how much I needed to see a hero do something other than run up to a monster and hit it.  One-Shotter rocks!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jet Nice Guy is definitely back!  We got only a tiny glimpse of him before, but here he is!
Tumblr media
Needlestar showing that he may no longer be a Blizzard Group member, he still believes in the black jacket look.
Tumblr media
Murata’s ability to draw action in such a way as to credibly convey a character’s power and effort is incredible: just look at all the muscle groups on the left side of Mizaki’s abdomen are contracted while those on the right are relaxed and how all that musclar effort is transferred into the javelin.  It has weight!
Tumblr media
Not that the S-Class heroes have been forgotten.  They’re very much present and while Murata has been coy about what they’re actually doing, they’re as incredible as ever.
Tumblr media
The beatific face of Darkshine not minding a pillar breaking on his head is perfect.
Tumblr media
And a monster makes the fatal mistake of punching Puri Puri Prisoner. According to Murata, this monster is stronger than the Deep Sea King who so badly mauled poor Puri Puri.  Enjoy!

BnHA Chapter 151: The Reason Heroes Wear Capes
Previously on BnHA: Mirio caught up with Overhaul and his final group of henchmen. Overhaul was all, “oh it’s that guy who couldn’t save Eri last time!” and Mirio was all, “that’s why I’m here this time.” Overhaul’s henchmen Sakaki and Nemoto appeared and tried to take out Mirio by giving him vertigo and hitting him with some fresh truth bombs, but Mirio shrugged them both off and kicked their asses. Then he ran over to Overhaul and roundhouse kicked the guy carrying Eri in the face while phasing his foot right through Eri, and Eri went flying out of the guy’s hands and into Mirio’s arms. Overhaul was all, “WHAT THE FUCK,” and Mirio was all, “I know I’m weak!” and the audience was all, “UH, YEAH, NOOOOOOOT REALLY THOUGH.” Anyway, so he caught Eri and was all, “everything’s fine now,” and I can’t fucking believe he’s going to die after all that. Or something else horrible is going to happen to him. I can’t fucking believe it, Mirio. Because right now it sure does look like he’s got this.
Today on BnHA: Overhaul activates his disassembly quirk and shreds the floor into bits and then reassembles it as a bunch of spikes. Mirio is able to phase through them while hoisting Eri out of harm’s way, but he’s super pissed at Overhaul for putting her at risk. Overhaul is unconcerned and says he can just put Eri back together again if she does get hurt, and that he’s done it many times before. Obviously this is the worst thing anyone’s ever said ever, and Mirio is enraged, but between dodging the spikes and dodging the bullets Overhaul’s last henchman Chrono is firing at him, it’s hard for him to fight back. So he wraps up Eri in his cape in order to confuse the bad guys, and then warps over to Chrono and knocks him out. He then punches Overhaul square in the jaw, which has been coming a long time and is super satisfying. As Mirio continues to whale on him, Overhaul has a flashback to when he tried to get his boss to follow his jerk plan and his boss was all, “no thanks that’s fucked up.” Meanwhile Nemoto wakes up in the adjacent hallway, crawls on over, picks up the case of Quirk-be-Gone bullets that Overhaul throws to him, and takes aim.
(As always, all comments not marked with an ETA are my unspoiled reactions from my first readthrough of this chapter. I’ve read up through chapter 183 now, so any ETAs will reflect that.)
I don’t like this side text
Tumblr media
it’s so confident. why you gotta jinx us like that manga
you guys Overhaul is staring at Mirio and Mirio is shaking a bit
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hope that’s a rage/adrenaline tremble. I don’t think it is. but I don’t like him being nervous. but he’s all alone with the Big Bad and now he has this little girl to protect and he already fucked up once and she’s counting on him and he can’t let her down and omggggg. TENSION
Overhaul is beckoning Eri back and threatening to kill Mirio. “how many times must I tell you before you understand?”
hey what the fuck
Tumblr media
kay. maybe it is a rage tremble. bc I’m starting to feel the same way just a little. I really need this asshole to never talk to this little girl ever again. Mirio, get her out of there!!
Eri’s panicking but Mirio’s telling her not to listen to him
Overhaul’s continuing to push all of my rage buttons and gggerhfrrrffghk
Tumblr media
my god he’s the worst. almost makes Endeavor look like father of the year in comparison
he says Eri is cursed and her actions are destined to kill people. actually he specifically says “every single one of your actions is destined to kill people.” because what better way to keep an innocent child in line than to manipulate her with guilt and fear sdflkhs wow this man is evil
--!!!!!!
Tumblr media
OH MY GOD FINALLY
AHHHHHHHH
Tumblr media
I LIKE THAT THE TITLE HAS EXCLAMATION POINTS ON IT THIS TIME BECAUSE THEY SEEM APPROPRIATE. MIRIO, RUN
holy SHITTTTT
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I HAVE VASTLY UNDERESTIMATED THE DESTRUCTIVE POWER OF OVERHAUL’S QUIRK. HOLY FUCKING SHIT
okay, so quick tactical rundown: the main problem here is that Mirio can’t use his ability to its full extent while also carrying Eri. what he should do is put her down for a sec and use his “warp” ability to fuck up Overhaul’s shit real quick. he was insanely fast while he was tearing class 1-A apart, and I feel like he could do it before Overhaul would be able to do any serious harm to Eri
because the thing is, Overhaul can’t kill Eri because she’s his cash cow. but I absolutely believe him capable of hurting her. which is why speed is of the essence
however I don’t think he’s going to be willing to risk it, which is why I think he miiiiiight be screwed
oh hey, Overhaul is casually confirming that yes, he’s totally willing to fuck Eri up if need be
Tumblr media
jesus fucking christ. pretty sure you could show this page to fucking All for One and he’d be like, “holy shit that dude’s evil”
like, while Shigaraki Tomura was chilling on a couch on the beach, this guy was torturing a six-year-old and coldly reminding her that if she ever tried to ask someone for help, they would die and it would be her fault
just... I don’t even have words. I feel like Overhaul traveled to BnHA from some seinen manga and doesn’t realize we have certain rules here about what lines it’s okay and not okay to cross
anyway, here’s Mirio’s response to that
Tumblr media
like, I obviously feel the same way, and it’s obviously more horrific for him to hear because he’s living it and doesn’t have the luxury of reminding himself it’s fiction. so I don’t blame him
but also I really need him to just keep his cool now omg, because she’s counting on you dude! fff and also I’m counting on you to not die because I love you. and also I really need Eri to not be traumatized anymore because holy shit please protect this sweet angel
anyway, so Overhaul’s continuing to do his Fullmetal Alchemist bullshit, and asking Mirio what he’s going to do if Eri gets hurt. because presumably they, unlike him, are not capable of putting her back together
clearly the only solution is to not let her get hurt!
“you can’t phase your way out of here while holding onto her” fuck me he’s figured it out
we need Aizawa stat. but who knows how long it’ll be before he catches up omg. they were in that maze for five hundred years
aaaaaand Overhaul’s sealed the path with his quirk
okay I feel like now is a good time to call bullshit on Overhaul’s reassembly power. this is too damn much. why is he allowed to reassemble matter in different fucking forms than the original. what the hell is the limit on his power then. you’re telling me Twice has a limit of two copies and Toga has to drink liters of blood in order to get any prolonged use out of her quirk, and here comes fucking Overhaul who can disassemble one thing and reassemble something completely different as long as it’s made from the same material. and he can even do ranged attacks, and he can manipulate this giant fucking room the size of a school gymnasium, and he doesn’t even seem to be tired?? jesus christ
then again, Todoroki Shouto can create a mountain of ice out of literally nothing in like .02 seconds. so maybe I’m really just mad because he’s so damn evil and I need someone to punch him in the face already
anyway, meanwhile this remaining henchman is aiming a gun at Mirio. because apparently he’s still conscious. so now it’s two against one, and they both have ranged attacks, and Mirio’s gonna have to dodge them both while not being able to fully phase his arms or hands
SON OF A BITCH
Tumblr media
STOP GIVING HIM POINTERS
now Mirio’s turning around and hiding behind his cape which seems like a really bad idea??
Tumblr media
okay first off, that closeup of the gun firing reminded me that guns are always censored in anime, and now I’m wondering how kooky this arc is going to look when it gets animated, because it’s pretty gun-heavy. hmm. gotta go back and see if we’ve had any other scenes with handguns already prior to this arc
(ETA: nothing comes to memory, but I admittedly haven’t gone back to check the anime yet with this in mind)
and second, Mirio’s cape isn’t bulletproof, and all this does is make it so that he can’t see where the bullets are coming from. and if he phases, he risks letting Eri get hit
so like I have no idea what he gains from a move like this. any thoughts??
but anyway he got lucky at least
OH!!!
Tumblr media
nice!!!!!!
shit, this is why he’s the hero and I’m the person reading this and running my big mouth. it never occurred to me he could use that to hide Eri so that he could spring this move
and at first I was like WHY DIDN’T HE HIT OVERHAUL, but then I thought maybe that’s not such a good idea to get that close to a guy who can splatter you with a touch
so now I’m thinking he should grab this guy’s discarded gun and fucking shoot Overhaul instead. but I somehow can’t picture him doing that. even though it would be perfect and the safest way to dispatch him and nonlethal while still being poetic justice
but now I see the gun has been knocked away
Tumblr media
so on top of being insanely overpowered, Overhaul is also great at thinking on his feet
OH SHIT, AGAIN
Tumblr media
HIS TRADEMARK ATTACK FROM BEHIND MOVE! DEKU SAW THROUGH IT, BUT OVERHAUL WASN’T FAST ENOUGH OH SNAP
I CAN’T FUCKING BELIEVE MIRIO PHASED THROUGH HIS HAND AND STILL HIT HIS FACE. I KNOW HE DID THE SAME THING WITH ERI IN THE PREVIOUS CHAPTER, BUT THE TIMING IS STILL UNBELIEVABLE AND IT’S LITERALLY LIFE OR DEATH IF HE DOESN’T GET IT RIGHT
LOOK AT THIS!!!!
Tumblr media
I’M READING THIS ON DEC 20TH, SO CHRISTMAS IS STILL FIVE DAYS AWAY, BUT SUFFICE TO SAY THIS IS JUST WHAT I WANTED
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I always think of the cape montage from The Incredibles, which is a whole lot of reasons to not wear capes. and meanwhile Mirio gives just this one very specific reason to wear them which I have to assume doesn’t come up very often
but I gotta say, he sells it
the henchman guy is running to pick up his discarded gun. hey Mirio, you wanna warp over here and punch him again
Tumblr media
that works too
shit the gun is in pieces now. well at least it can’t be used against him
meanwhile Overhaul is back on his bullshit, but Mirio’s warping again
fuck yessssssss
Tumblr media
I KNOW WE JUST SAW THIS, BUT MY GOD, IT’S STILL JUST AS SATISFYING THE SECOND TIME. HELL, MAYBE EVEN BETTER, BECAUSE THIS TIME I KNOW IT’S NOT JUST A ONE-OFF
naturally the other shoe is still waiting to drop though. what’s it gonna be. does Overhaul have a gun of his own? he seems the type who’d do that. or will he catch Mirio off guard somehow?
fuck, I’m getting nervous now. things are going too well
Mirio he’s a germaphobe so you should just sneeze on him. see what happens
Eri’s watching in awe as Mirio screams that Overhaul won’t ever lay a finger on her again
“you lose, Chisaki!!”
what in the hell is this
Tumblr media
no amount of sympathetic flashbacks can make me feel sorry for you, dude. I feel fucking confident saying that. I’d wager real life money that I don’t have
present day!Overhaul is telling Mirio not to call him by that name and saying he threw it away
and now we’re flashing back again, but Overhaul is already a young man now
he wasn’t a babyhaul for very long huh
he’s talking to the old boss and they seem to be discussing how the family is getting weaker
Overhaul is requesting the boss to reconsider “the plan I talked to you about before”
but boss isn’t having it
Tumblr media
tell that to those assholes who fought Tamaki for like three whole chapters
holy shit the plot is twisting all of a sudden! we’re back in the present!
Nemoto (the truth serum Reborn guy from the previous chapter) is crawling toward Overhaul slowly
Tumblr media
I’m sorry, the main takeaway I got from that is that Mirio’s been at it for ten minutes already, and where are Aizawa, Nighteye, and Deku, again??
and Nemoto is having a flashback explaining why he became Overhaul’s right hand man
apparently because other people kept lying to him, and he wanted a friend he could trust. because nothing sums up Overhaul’s general vibe better than “trustworthy friend”
so now he’s all “I must walk with him!!!”, and I want you all to know that I’m thumping my head on the back of my desk chair and rolling my eyes very exasperatedly. for fuck’s sake where did Overhaul fucking find all of these assholes
and I know I said I wanted Nemoto to stick around, but that was for shipping purposes!!! not Mirio-killing purposes! what the fuck!
what the fuck guys!
Tumblr media
you’re telling me Mirio did ALL OF THAT SHIT and yet he couldn’t stop Overhaul from throwing a case of bullets at Nemo?
and Nemo had time to load his fucking gun and everything, and Mirio was what?? just standing there??!
I’m sorry, Mirio. you are so deserving of being the next Symbol of Peace. but it’s not you and it won’t be you, and the reason is that you’re not the main character, and so you don’t have the power of always somehow winning the day no matter what, and shit like this happens to you that you don’t fucking deserve. it’s not you, sweetie. it’s the plot
oh man
 BONUS:
FA’s doing another omake corner with pages from the character book! 8DDDD just what I needed after this stress
lookit this. lookit
Tumblr media
so peaceful. even though Deku’s stressing me out just a tiny bit because who the fuck reads standing up. sit down and relax
then there is a page of Horikoshi being excited over his book, and then a page of the characters as cute little stickers with catchphrases
and I need someone to explain Todoroki’s catchphrase to me. because what
Tumblr media
isn’t this the name of Mr. Burns’s teddy bear
like, the others make sense! Deku’s is all “smash!!” and Katsuki’s is “boom!!” and Ochako’s is “float” with a little heart. so now tell me. wtf is bobo. that’s the word my Puerto Rican mom and grandma used for “pacifier” when my siblings and I were little. it’s weirding me the fuck out
(ETA:
Tumblr media
yes google. that’s exactly what I meant. todoroki bring your own beer.)
on an unrelated note, I was wavering on whether to post Aizawa but I think I have to
Tumblr media
just because. he has no arms and it’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen
and now we’re moving on to Kirishima and Mina’s profiles, but I’m thinking I’m gonna just do a separate post on the kids’ profiles at some point, so I’ll skip this for now. anyways that was fun
ACTUAL BONUS:
Tumblr media
so now here’s the omake from the actual volume!
my takeaway from that paragraph about Sakaki is that Horikoshi is probably always drunk while writing this series and that sure explains a lot
someone needs to smack the Nemoto inside of Horikoshi’s head. fuck the stupid masks. these guys would have been at least 10x more interesting without them (not an exaggeration; the bar was so low that even something as small as that would have improved them drastically)
actually, now I kind of wish he’d gotten to fight Nighteye. salaryman vs salaryman. maybe get Iida in on this too somehow. battle royale

Fire Force, Chapter 151: ‘Young Man, Assault’”
...I give up.
Ohkubo, go fuck yourself, you misogynistic hack.
Triggers if you hate a shitty mangaka perving on a 17-year-old and trying to hook her up with the older dude who keeps creeping on her.
This is the writer who gave us Maka, Crona, and so many characters--and he’s reduced to this. Seriously, someone, anyone, get Ohkubo some therapy.
Translated from Japanese to Portuguese to English to snarky translator’s notes to maintain my sanity getting through this utter depraved incoherent shit-fest of a goddamn awful manga series.
Goddamn it.

Jonah: “Have you finished training? Training, suited to a true hero? The time has come...The bullet of flames will rise. No…”

Jonah: “He has come.”

Assault: (thinking: “During the fight in the Nether, I should have been a support troop and exterminated the 8th...But they had a blessed killer...Tamaki Kotatsu. Despite her innocent face, she is a shameless individual.”) “Grrr. Disgusting.” (thinking: “To defeat the 8th, I need to put an end to her. I’ve trained...Day and night, I have trained endlessly...All to deal with that vulgar, coarse woman.”)

Tamaki: “?”
The envelope says “A Challenge.”
Tamaki: “ ‘I'll be waiting in the Old Wasteland of the 2nd District.' A love letter from an admirer?”
[Translator’s note: A writer who wasn’t a misogynist prick wouldn’t write this character to be this fucking stupid looking at a note that says “Challenge.” Or the writer would have set up Tamaki as lovestruck or haughty and therefore assuming any letter to her is a love letter, hence the “challenge” is of her own making. But what do I know--I just analyze this shit for a living, and Atsushi Ohkubo is a fucking hack.]

The sign says “Wasteland.”

Hood 2: “He begins new training.”

Host 2: “Welcome.”

???: “It’s just that my daughter doesn’t speak with me…”
Assault: “What kind of place is this? I’m shivering all over. But this is training.”
Page 16
Host 3: “Hi, I’m Saki! Nice to meet you.”
Assault: (thinking: “Like dynamite.”) “Ugh.”
Saki: “Huh? Hold up. What’s with the suit? You just run away from a wedding? You hardly seem like a man at all.”
Assault: “I...I don’t?”
Saki: “I would know! You’re different from other men who come here.”
Assault: “I’m not really a man...So I cannot be defeated by Tamaki Kotatsu.”
[Translator’s note: ...A clever writer would work through this idea about the really gross conception by rightwing jerk-offs who think they have to be sexually pure out of their misogyny towards women. Or a clever writer would consider how pornography addiction can debase men as they objectify women. But Atsushi Ohkubo is a fucking hack.]

And now, Assault is Forrest Gump. This is not a box of chocolates: it’s just a box of shit.
Assault: “I didn’t think I would be able to converse so well with a woman...I may in fact be a genius. I’m coming for you, Tamaki Kotatsu.”
[Translator’s note: ...Please, for the love of God, tell me these aren’t puns.]
Tamaki: “No!!! Why?!”
Assault: “...”
[Translator’s note: ...Someone, punch Ohkubo in the dick.]
Page 18
Tamaki: “D...Don’t look…”
Assault: “That is such...an innocent, embarrassed face...It’s different when they’re young.”
[Translator’s note: JESUS FUCKING TAP-DANCING CHRIST, SHE’S 17! AND HE’S OLDER THAN DIRT! WHAT THE FUCK?!]
Page 19
Narration: “She’s strong...Very strong...Tamaki Kotatsu...I have never faced such a strong opponent...That is why I have to overcome myself...I am the killer emerging from the depths. I'm the bloodshot Assault! After my third defeat, I waited for the strong winds to blow. This moment cannot escape my vision.”
Woman: “AH! What a weird wind!”
[Translator’s note: You know how people say “I feel unclean, I need a shower”? Is there a way to substitute water with fire and just burn the unclean off of me?]
Assault: “The panties of the young...Her shame is seared into my eyes.”
[Translator’s note: SHE’S 17, YOU SICK FUCK!]
Assault: “My training is complete. There is nothing that can stop me.”
Page 20
Jonah: “So...You finally got it?”
Assault: “Yes.”
Arrow: “His arm didn’t move...He stopped my arrow with one finger…”
Jonah: “Assault...has arrived…”
Jonah: “?!”
Page 21
The note he leaves is “I’ve come!”
[Translator’s note: ...I’m leaving.]
Jonah: “Assault…”
Page 22
Set up for a dumb joke incoming.
Page 23
Tamaki: “Enough of this! What’s your problem?!”
Assault: “This time will be the last.” (thinking: “I have evolved...I can handle this, no problem.”)
Tamaki: “You’ll never get it!”
[Translator’s note: Tamaki, the dude is super violent and powerful, and you’ve come alone. Seriously, is everyone at the 8th just stupid this week? This ruins the entire fucking point of the series when you can’t hold up a barometer to know when something is truly dangerous and should be taken seriously. Akitaru would let her do this? She didn’t tell anyone? No one follows her? Just...What is this crap? What is the point? How do we go from Soul Eater to this garbage? It’s Chapter 113 all the fuck over again.]
Assault: “Oh, I know ... Like you said, I can’t.” (“I know that oh too well...I can see the result...No matter how many times I try, I can’t win because…”)
Page 24
Assault: (“It’s different when it’s someone you like.”)
[Translator’s note: … *vomits*]
Assault: “Come.”
Narration: “No matter how much you fall in love, you have a battle from which you can not escape! In the next chapter, a new arc begins! And stay tuned for the anime announcements! To be continued in Chapter 152: ‘Oze Family.’”
[Translator’s note: This entire chapter sours me on any idea of an anime: this series doesn’t deserve it. Ohkubo doesn’t deserve to be rewarded when he can’t mature as a writer. What a fucking disappointment; what a waste of a person.]

One-Punch Man
I read this pretty early on (when it was being translated + the webcomic) and I've talked about his elsewhere but now I want to put my theories here too!
I'm just going to list every one of my speculations first and then explain my thoughts. Also the sentences in italics was my original opinions, just in case that's not clear. Or usually I will say, "I wonder", "here I wrote down", "I had said", etc.
Mar. 2018:
"Scary thought but the manga might not be very long?.". So I don't exactly remember why I thought this but there is a substantial amount of webtoon contnet to cover so I don't think it will end before say 250 chapters. Interesting that I thought this.
"Monster king Orochi is just like Saitama and he could be the most formidable opponent. Or he's just another one hit kill and there's a better opponent in the future." - so he literally was just the latter. I had thought three years ago that maybe he was actually Blast and that's why he couldn't be contacted. But the outcome is so much better. Honestly for a villain he was pretty cool, the only thing about this manga that is sometimes boring is that you know that none of the characters will die. Nobody loses powers either. EDIT: haha I had to make an amendment here. In chapter 143 a hero loses an arm and it seems as if Tanktop Master was crushed. Like- I was wrong lol. Also Darkshine loses his hands not too long after..soo whoops.
The next thing that I posted on twitter said, "what if Blast was manipulated and made into Lord Orochi". And then I had an accompanying image where Psykos confirms that Orochi was once a human being and was "gruesomely perfected". - he is definitely not Blast that's for sure. Blast's introduction was pretty cool. I was shocked for a few hours, it was good. But yeah I don't know who Orochi once was, but that's not true lol.
Oh about my first bullet point, I found another tweet while looking through my twitter and I had said that I thought this was the last arc because it seemed to be the major conflict, but ever since my re-read of the webcomic I think that's no longer true. Not 100% sure though.
The last thing that I said in March, was "what if the final boss is God himself"? This manga is a satire on heroes as it is, but that would be wild and funny as hell. I don't feel like it will happen but idk. Would be cool and totally on par with the insanity of the series lol
April 2018: I guess around this time was when I was able to read the Elder Centipede chapter. Because I mentioned that Blast "fought with it two years ago." At this point I was still running with the idea that Blast died or something else happened. Maybe he was frustrated with the fact that no one else could match up to him. Which now since his reveal in the manga is just not true, he's fighting somthing that's messing space, time and gravity itself.
I think I was just really excited imagining that Blast was greedy or something lol
I also wondered if his "disappearance" was just a big plot hole. Because how was the Hero Association able to know that Blast doesn't want to come into work? Like who was he talking too???
Also the fact that Child Emporer and Metal Knight have outside communications. (Which now we learned was because C.E was his assistant). Made me wonder who was speical enough to get into contact with Blast, it wasn't Tatsumaki because she would have been all haughty about it. lol
June 2018:
Psykos kidnapped a child or maybe a human. I still really wanted to know who Orochi was 😂
I also wondered if someone was looking for him, like they were close friends or if he had a wife and she'll never be able to know what happened. 😟 I don't know what chapter it was but there was a scene where there was a shadow talking to another human. Idk I would've liked that information. :/
March 2021:
This is where I did a big re-read of the series (webcomic and manga). At this point I had been waiting a long time for updates so I forgot a lot of important key details. Like Tatsumaki and Gyoro both say "bald guy" meaning that she heard about this mysterious person (Saitama) and kept that to herself.
Around this time is when I stopped having big speculations and it was more questioning about future chapter events. And then I was just very excited about each new chapter and it mostly turns into reactions.
Before chapter 135 I wondered just how important Fubuki was going to be. I thought it was really interesting that she can sense other life forms, and maybe that her powers were evolving. I still don't know how important she is.
I literally lost my shit at chapter 135 LOL. Like in my notes all I put down was, blast face, BLAST FAEC!!1! And then I also really enjoyed the development between Sweet Mask and Zombieman in this chapter.
Ch. 138 notes: What the- I've got no words. Ya'll need to experience reading this chapter. It has the coolest lore I've seen from this manga yet. Like they connected to another dimension. Can you tell that I was really excited at this point? lol
Ch. 139: *screaming* and that's it, that's the notes lol jk. Here I wrote down about the group worshipping something far underground, like if that is the next enemy? Or is it the dissolution of the H.A from the webcomic?
Ch. 142: Tatsumaki caring about information about Blast was really sweet to see. But if I didn't read the webcomic I wouldn't understand why he means so much to her. I hope ONE and Murata have her backstory in the manga as well. I literally spoke too soon about this because two chapters later we get that information. :O || Sweet Mask got such a bad injury that it makes me believe that he died. Not sure tbh. Something that happens differently in the webcomic is that it's revealed that he was a mysterious being. Like he has the ability to alter himself. He gets harassed by everyone (mostly the public) because they didn't expect him to be an ugly monster. And this kickstarts the public not rlly trusting heroes. And a lot of other shit happens.
Also about Ch. 142 I wondered why Watchdog man wasn't there. Was his city safe? Also I liked the fact that we actually get dialogue from Pig God.
Ch. 143: I don't like Drive Knight anymore lol. It seems like Genos could've actually died for real this time. And lastly Fubuki is a queen. She's turning out to be a really good character.
Ch. 144: It seems like a death flag sprung up for Tatsumaki. Also I kind of understand her thinking because to tatsumaki, blast was the only one that could/would save her. It's not a curse but more like a deep scar on her heart. ;-;!! I wouldn't trust others if that happened to me either. || When I seen the council of swordmasters I thought that they would betray the heroes, lol. || And finally in my notes, I said that it seems like TTM is down for the count too.
Ch. 145: I went back to re-read it and I just noticed in one panel, Pig God says that in the prophecy he needs to save up is power? Is he OP too?! I guess he'll be the savior maybe, that is if Saitama doesn't show up anytime soon. I'm starting to really like Pig God's character a lot too now.
Ch. 146: Ooh! Looks like the spotlight is on Darkshine now. I hope he continues to be a hero because in the webcomic he completely loses his confidence. It's really nice to see. I had some really bad foreshadowing, all I'm going to say is rip darkshine. He didn't die but oof. I also said that it was nice to see that the S-Class could actually hold their own. It wasn't looking promising there for a while.
Ch. 147: oh saitama is on the cover will he finally show up? He in fact didn't. 😔 also I liked the interaction between Atomic Samurai and Bang, he said that it was his job as the master to right his wrongs. I like that he's no longer looking down on him because of Garou. Like how could you expect someone to just be able to make a decision right away and deal with their own student? Like he obviously was important to Bang. That's such a hard thing to do. || Also about Garou he gets a new form 👀
Ch. 148: before I read the chapter, I wrote down that I had different expectations. Because in the webcomic Saitama comes out and supports Garou, he isn't okay with him being killed. Also around this fight is when Sweet Mask gets "revived" and is in monster form. Saitama is the only one that doesn't have a major issue with him. In the webcomic Saitama wasn't missing from the fight but he also wasn't playing a major part yet. || Anyways so the chapter ends with bang appearing to start the fight.
Ch. 149: I felt really bittersweet reading this chapter because the council was wiped out. It would've been cool to understand why there were so few of them left. The lore about the two swords was really cool though. So many events within the last ten chapters veered off from the original plot in the webcomic. I have no way to know what to expect, but I'm not complaining, I like going into these chapters newly experiencing them.
From here on out this is all new observations. Like today i just re-read 150. I would've had a reaction to 151 but it's not out, in fact I feel like I've been waiting a long time for that to release, the last time I checked was early july...
Ch. 150: Poor Darkshine. Also Metal Bat comes back!! I missed his character :o || Haha King is still being caught up in misunderstandings, i can't wait to laugh my ass off in the next chapter. because I know it'll be funny between sprm and king.

I 100% agree with your assessment on the Overhaul arc in bnha. Started series when that was the most recent arc and completely lost interest in the series halfway through. Trying to get started again, though. What would you change about the arc as a whole?
first off, anon, I hope I haven’t inadvertently spoiled anything! you said you’re trying to get back into it now, so just a heads up that this post is also going to contain spoilers for the end of the arc, though that’s probably obvious lol.
also, now that I’m a dozen chapters past it, I’m very happy to say things are moving along smoothly again and it reminds me of the “old” BnHA. all of the little things I missed so much are back. so it does get better! I’m really pushing to get fully caught up with the manga myself now.
so now! regarding this question, there are really two ways I could answer. because truthfully, the most honest answer I could give to “what would you change about this arc?” is “I wouldn’t have had it in the first place” lol. but that’s just me. even if I took out all of the stuff that annoyed me, even if it was more cleanly executed, this arc was just never going to be one of my favorites. it explores some themes that are important, but aren’t really connected to the things I enjoy the most about the series. the focus is too narrow at the expense of a lot of my faves who got excluded. and the tone is just too dark. which isn’t to say I don’t enjoy angst or when Shit Gets Real, but, how to put this… it has more of a DC vibe than a Marvel one to me. it’s more Dark Knight than Infinity War. and that’s just not quite my taste. so yeah, if we’re talking full control over the manga, I would probably have gutted the entire thing and chucked it completely and done something else. not sure what, but it would have been really different.
but since that answer is kind of a cop-out, here are some of the things I would change if I had to leave the main framework of the arc in place, but was allowed to make smaller changes here and there.
speed up/condense some of the stuff that happens after they encounter Eri and prior to the rescue op. it felt like it took way too long to get to the action. we met Eri in chapter 129 and they didn’t commence the rescue until 9 chapters later. some of the stuff that happens in between is important – especially the All Might stuff and the reveal about Nighteye’s premonition – but Kiri’s fight went on longer than necessary, and then there was no need for them all to meet up, start to plan Eri’s rescue, break off to gather more information, meet up again a few days later, and then finally start the raid. that was too much
I would put Kiri’s flashback in his first fight (the one against knifey stabby man). despite me having just said that the fight went on for too long, lol. but this would be a good way to break it up to make it more interesting. and then I could…
put Ochako and Tsuyu back in the arc and give one of them (or both of them – tag team) Kiri’s second fight instead. if their quirks don’t match up as well against Shield Monk and Chance the Rappa then just change those later two’s quirks to something more interesting. their original quirks were pretty boring anyway
put Ryuukyuu in the arc too bc obviously the girls should be accompanied by a grown-up just like the boys were. that part made sense
speed up Tamaki’s fight (like, don’t even bother trying to make it a challenge. just let Tamaki have his time to shine and kick their asses with no trouble), and have Fat Gum stay with him (just toss in an extra bad guy for him to fight) and speed up the Hot Gum reveal. and then just have the two of them get cut off from the others afterward
and I’m not sure what, but have Aizawa actually do something. as opposed to nothing. which is what he pretty much ended up doing
(ETA: I forgot to account for Kirishima during the raid! so now what I’m thinking is that he ends up making it to the final battle along with Aizawa, Nighteye, and Deku, but ends up being plot abducted along with Aizawa. because that’s a very interesting combination to me, and having to look out for his student might be a good way to nerf Aizawa a bit while still letting him actually fight. then maybe Kirishima gets injured much like what happened with him and Fat Gum. and then Aizawa steps back in to beat whoever it is they’re fighting. because it’s probably someone with a more cinematic quirk than Chrono tbh. anyway. so yeah, bonus Dadzawa feels. eventually he will come to realize that all of his kids are, in fact, problem children.)
actually, you know what, since most of my changes would just be little tweaks to the way things play out once the raid starts, I’ll just write up my version of a chapter-by-chapter outline instead
delete most of chapter 138 and have them get to the basement by the end of that chapter
139, Tamaki and FG stay behind to fight. Tamaki has his flashback and kicks some ass
140, we finish up the fight, with FG’s part of it. but the two of them find their forward progress blocked off by Irinaka. the chapter then ends with the ladies staring down another group of villains
141, a quick flashback shows how Irinaka separated Tsu, Ocha, and Ryuukyuu from the rest. Ryuu takes on the stronger villain (dragon time bitches) while the girls tag team a second bad guy. I have no idea how this would go, and it would take more time and effort and planning on my part than I currently am willing to devote since it’s a hypothetical scenario. but I have no doubt it could be very badass. we’ll give this fight two chapters, maybe, so we can have flashbacks and some more in-depth action. so that’s 141 and 142
143, we get League of Villains antics and flashbacks
144, the conclusion of that, and they take down Irinaka
145 and 146, Mirio vs Overhaul, with the others catching up at the end of 146
147, Aizawa (ETA: and Kirishima) get plot abducted and have their own little fight scene. Nighteye gets impaled trying to help the others escape. make that a bigger moment and show a bit more of his fighting beforehand, and make that the cliffhanger. since I’ve now added Kirishima to the mix, this may possibly take up an extra chapter
148, Deku turns back, activates 20% OFA, and fights Overhaul for a little bit but doesn’t do too well. Eri comes back and offers herself in exchange for the others’ safety. the ladies come barging in to turn the tide, having smashed their way through the labyrinth
149, Deku and Eri vs Overhaul part 1. first half of Overhaul’s flashback. establish his backstory and his plan and the boss’s objections. end with 100% OFA
150, Deku and Eri vs Overhaul part 2. second half of Overhaul’s flashback. show him using his quirk to fuck up the boss. (or at least, show enough to make it clear beyond a doubt that that’s what happened. you had no problem showing what happened to Eri and making that abundantly clear beyond what was necessary.) show him afterwards talking about the boss’s sudden decline in health, and how he’ll be taking charge until he’s healthy. show him monologuing about how this is all for the good of the family and one day the boss will be able to understand that too. “I’m grateful to you, old man. so until then, just sleep.” Deku and Eri take him out; chapter ends with the KO punch
151, the aftermath. basically what we got in 159
152, grand theft auto
153, Nighteye feels
bam. end of arc
so that’s more or less it. if we also speed up the pre-rescue stuff, I think this arc could easily be at least 10 chapters shorter. they can cut most of the villain flashbacks, too, since we don’t really need those. we got along just fine without villain flashbacks for the most part before this arc; only Tomura and Stain had them, and we managed perfectly well. also, give them more interesting designs, seriously. having them all try to stick to a theme/uniform with only slight variations was really dull, and there were moments when I genuinely lost track of who was who. none of the heroes look alike even though they’re all on the same team. it’s fine lol
anyways, so that’s my answer, I guess! thank you for the ask!
