I don't know I'm not done talking about it. It's insane that I can't just uninstall Edge or Copilot. That websites require my phone number to sign up. That people share their contacts to find their friends on social media.
I wouldn't use an adblocker if ads were just banners on the side funding a website I enjoy using and want to support. Ads pop up invasively and fill my whole screen, I misclick and get warped away to another page just for trying to read an article or get a recipe.
Every app shouldn't be like every other app. Instagram didn't need reels and a shop. TikTok doesn't need a store. Instagram doesn't need to be connected to Facebook. I don't want my apps to do everything, I want a hub for a specific thing, and I'll go to that place accordingly.
I love discord, but so much information gets lost to it. I don't want to join to view things. I want to lurk on forums. I want to be a user who can log in and join a conversation by replying to a thread, even if that conversation was two days ago. I know discord has threads, it's not the same. I don't want to have to verify my account with a phone number. I understand safety and digital concerns, but I'm concerned about information like that with leaks everywhere, even with password managers.
I shouldn't have to pay subscriptions to use services and get locked out of old versions. My old disk copy of photoshop should work. I should want to upgrade eventually because I like photoshop and supporting the business. Adobe is a whole other can of worms here.
Streaming is so splintered across everything. Shows release so fast. Things don't get physical releases. I can't stream a movie I own digitally to friends because the share-screen blocks it, even though I own two digital copies, even though I own a physical copy.
I have an iPod, and I had to install a third party OS to easily put my music on it without having to tangle with iTunes. Spotify bricked hardware I purchased because they were unwillingly to upkeep it. They don't pay their artists. iTunes isn't even iTunes anymore and Apple struggles to upkeep it.
My TV shows me ads on the home screen. My dad lost access to eBook he purchased because they were digital and got revoked by the company distributing them. Hitman 1-3 only runs online most of the time. Flash died and is staying alive because people love it and made efforts to keep it up.
I have to click "not now" and can't click "no". I don't just get emails, they want to text me to purchase things online too. My windows start search bar searches online, not just my computer. Everything is blindly called an app now. Everything wants me to upload to the cloud. These are good tools! But why am I forced to use them! Why am I not allowed to own or control them?
No more!!!!! I love my iPod with so much storage and FLAC files. I love having all my fics on my harddrive. I love having USBs and backups. I love running scripts to gut suck stuff out of my Windows computer I don't want that spies on me. I love having forums. I love sending letters. I love neocities and webpages and webrings. I will not be scanning QR codes. Please hand me a physical menu. If I didn't need a smartphone for work I'd get a "dumb" phone so fast. I want things to have buttons. I want to use a mouse. I want replaceable batteries. I want the right to repair. I grew up online and I won't forget how it was!

COOKING NIGHT-DREW STARKEY
𝕤𝕦𝕞𝕞𝕒𝕣𝕪 Drew and Y/N try to cook together, but it turns into a hilarious mess.
-ˋˏ✄┈┈┈┈
It was supposed to be a simple, romantic evening.
Drew Starkey had the brilliant idea of skipping takeout for once and cooking dinner together with Y/N. She had jokingly complained the week before about their excessive reliance on Uber Eats, so Drew decided it was time to prove they could do something more domestic.
“Think about it,” he said that morning as they lay in bed. “Good food, great wine, and the satisfaction of making something with our own hands. It’ll be fun!”
Y/N eyed him skeptically. “Do you even know where the pots and pans are?”
“Of course I do!” he retorted, feigning offense. “They are somewhere in the kitchen.”
By late afternoon, they were in the kitchen armed with ingredients for a homemade pasta recipe Drew had found online. He had watched half a cooking tutorial on YouTube earlier and felt ready to tackle the task. Y/N, ever the realist, had a backup plan: frozen pizza in the freezer, just in case.
The first sign of trouble came early.
“Do we really need this much flour?” Y/N asked, frowning as Drew poured what looked like half the bag onto the counter.
“That’s what it said in the video!” Drew replied confidently, rolling up his sleeves.
Y/N glanced at his phone, where the recipe was still open. “Drew, it says two cups of flour. You just dumped, like, five.”
Drew paused, his hands coated in the white powder. “...Well, it’s too late now. We’ll just make extra pasta. More is better, right?”
Y/N shook her head, laughing, but didn’t argue.
Things quickly escalated.
Drew was tasked with kneading the dough, but his enthusiasm for the task sent small clouds of flour into the air. Y/N stood back, arms crossed, watching as he wrestled with the sticky, uneven lump on the counter.
“Is it supposed to look like that?” she asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Totally,” Drew said, though the dough clung to his fingers like glue. “This is exactly how Gordon Ramsay does it.”
She couldn’t suppress a laugh. “Sure it is.”
By the time they had something resembling pasta dough, the kitchen looked like a tornado had swept through. There was flour on the counters, on the floor, and somehow on Drew’s forehead.
“Okay,” Y/N said, clapping her hands together. “You handle the pasta; I’ll work on the sauce. How hard can it be?”
Turns out, making sauce wasn’t as straightforward as she thought.
Y/N chopped onions with more enthusiasm than precision, the knife slipping dangerously close to her fingers. Drew hovered nervously beside her.
“Careful! You’re not supposed to hold the knife like that.”
“Oh, and you’re the expert now?” she shot back, throwing a handful of onions into the pan.
The oil in the pan hissed and popped violently, and both of them jumped back.
“Is it supposed to do that?” Drew asked, grabbing a spatula like it was a weapon.
“I think so,” Y/N replied, though her tone was far from confident.
Meanwhile, Drew’s attempt to roll out the pasta was going poorly. The dough clung to the rolling pin, tearing apart no matter how much flour he added.
“This stupid thing won’t cooperate!” he grumbled, shaking the sticky mess.
Y/N turned just in time to see a piece of dough fly through the air and land on the kitchen light fixture.
“Oh my god, Drew!” she exclaimed, doubling over with laughter.
“It’s not funny!” he protested, though he couldn’t help but laugh along with her. “Okay, maybe it’s a little funny.”
By the time they finally dropped the misshapen noodles into boiling water, the sauce was bubbling ominously on the stove, and the kitchen looked like a crime scene.
When they sat down to eat, the table was set with mismatched plates and the slightly burnt garlic bread Drew had insisted on adding at the last minute.
The pasta...well, it wasn’t perfect. The noodles were uneven, some parts were overcooked, and the sauce was a little too salty. But they were laughing too hard to care.
“This might be the worst pasta I’ve ever had,” Y/N said, giggling as she twirled a lumpy noodle onto her fork.
“Hey! It’s...rustic,” Drew said defensively, though he couldn’t keep a straight face.
“Rustic is a nice way of saying terrible.”
They clinked their glasses of wine together, grinning. “To our first and possibly last attempt at cooking together,” Y/N said.
“To frozen pizza as a backup plan,” Drew added, pulling the box out of the freezer with a flourish.
As they sat on the couch later, eating perfectly crisp pizza and watching a movie, Drew glanced over at Y/N.
“Okay, maybe we’re not gourmet chefs,” he admitted. “But it wasn’t all bad, right?”
She smiled, leaning her head on his shoulder. “Not bad at all. Definitely the most fun I’ve had ruining dinner.”
Drew chuckled, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. “Next time, we’ll just stick to sandwiches.”
And despite the mess, the chaos, and the slightly singed garlic bread, it was a night they’d both remember for years to come.

To avoid the Big G (or any company) taking credit of your work, get an app or software that doesn’t require you to be connected to internet to work and that doesn’t save on their server only. Something local like ms words (if already on your laptop), or libreoffice are the best options.
Two other apps I use:
Obsidian: free, install it on as many laptops and mobile/tablets you want, work without internet. I use it to take notes and for my writing bible, but I’ve seen some people use it to write as well. Note I pay for their secure sync, as dropbox isn’t working for mobile sync.
Scrivener: not free, but you pay only once and can reinstall it on a new laptop as long as you keep your key (if they still do it you may be able to grab a Nanowrimo discount). It has a learning curve, so watch some tutorials to use it to its fullest, but the basics are intuitive enough.
Y'ALL
I'm looking at free google docs alternatives because I don't want the Big G to take credit for my funky friday beep game fanfics but I also want to find a quality reliable replacement so uh
does anyone have any good free word processor recs?

The week of silence between you flowed smoothly into the next. You could hardly see him in the common rooms, and your chat was horribly empty. Not a single message from either him or you. The only sign of life from Iso was his appearance online from time to time. Sage invited you to come with her to the Viper lab. You were in one of the testing areas, but this time you were led somewhere deeper.
The thin corridor made you feel uneasy and uneasy, like you were being led into some kind of cell. And the closer you got to the wide door, the more the clouds thickened over you. Sage put some kind of card to the scanner, and then the automatic door unlocked. There were several rooms. And a perfect view of what was inside. In one of them lay some girl, hooked up to some machines. In another some strange mechanisms that you assumed Viper and Killjoy had developed together. In the center room where you were - Viper was standing and talking to Reyna about something. As you approached, you began to discern meaning in their phrases.
"Could this be the same thing that happened on Omega Earth? Radianite Plague,” - Viper said, folding her arms across her chest. - "Then it makes sense, then. If feeding on souls only sustains it, could the Radianite treatment methodology do anything to help the process?"
"I'm willing to go there again if I have to. We need information,” -Reyna's voice was irritated. - "We need to assemble a squad."
"Good,”- the girl's gaze went to you. - "Why are you here?"
"Just about the invasion of Omega Earth. Y/N will be in your squad,” - Sage nodded at you.
"And that's worth coming here for? This is an isolated area, Sage."
"I know it is. I had to get Reyna because preparations for the portal launch are almost complete. The quicker and more unexpectedly we pay a visit, the more effective the results will be. I told the others, too. They'll be waiting."
Reyna straightened up in a flash and, with a nod to Viper, headed for the exit. You followed her with a glance, then looked at Viper and the girl on the other side of the glass. The woman stood in front of you and gave you a stern look. You realized you shouldn't linger and hurried with Sage to the meeting place.
To your surprise, Iso was there. It seemed to you that he was deliberately not looking at you and avoiding all interaction. Standing nearby were Killjoy and Sova. The two seniors' experience in the mission told them it was going to be tough. Brimstone, Cypher, and Raze remained in support. To reopen the portal or come to the rescue in case of emergency.
Reyna was already dressed in her protective gear and standing with weapons in hand.
"Killjoy, you know what to do. We need information. The rest of us are backup. Time is short, so act quickly and carefully."
Tumblr media
The building was gloomy. You quietly followed the others, glancing around every now and then. The many closed drawers made it feel like you were in a maze. Out of the corner of your eye, you notice Killjoy and Owl going off somewhere, apparently they know where the information might be stored, or at least have an idea. Reyna nods in your direction and you obediently walk in that direction with your weapon at the ready. You've had steady training with different agents all this week, so you've learned to control some of your abilities, and you've even gotten better at hitting targets. It's not perfect, but it's good enough for successful missions.
A red light blinked softly somewhere above you. You listened to the silence and heard only your own heartbeat. In an instant, you began to hear footsteps. It was someone outside. And he clearly wanted to make his presence known. A brief message from Iso came through your earpiece:
"Security is checking the area. Be careful."
You slowly emerge from your cover, surveying the semi-darkness.
"We have successfully infiltrated the system center. Looking for information."
"Copy that."
You look in the direction of the sounds and wait tensely. A silhouette smoothly reveals itself. Broad, clearly male. You take aim, ready to shoot if you need to. Before you can blink, the weapon falls out of your hands from the shot of the man in front of you.
"Shit,” - you hiss, trying to find another weapon.
Pulling out your gun, you aim again and fire at point-blank range. But the bullets meet the obstacle and fall to the floor. A purple glint in the darkness, makes you freeze. The red light starts flashing more actively and a nasty siren starts blaring through the building. You immediately dive into the maze of cubicles, haunted by the sounds of gunfire and footsteps.
"Y/N, situation. "- Reyna's voice booms in your ear.
"Omega Iso."
"Killjoy?"
"Data is downloading, it takes time."
The shot grazes your leg and you shriek, falling to the floor. Pain echoes throughout your leg, then throughout your body. Several more shots pierce your limbs. You bite your lip bloody enough not to give away your presence and crawl behind the crate. Your breathing can't be heard over the sounds of the alarms, but the footsteps and gunshots throughout the room are very audible. You try to get up, but a wave of pain pierces you again. You pull out of your pocket some sort of injection that Sage and Viper developed. With her powers, this injection gives you a temporary healing effect, which can help in missions where she isn't available.
A feeling of relief spreads through your body and you get up off the floor. You notice a silhouette nearby and immediately fire a few shots. This time the man falls, and then you start running towards where you all split up. It looks like it wasn't Omega Iso, but a simple guard, for the footsteps of pursuit continued. Suddenly something appeared in front of you. From the matter you realized it was their Omen. He immediately hooked his arm around your neck and lifted you above the ground. You dropped your weapon and began grabbing at his clawed arm with your hands, trying to free yourself. The stress of the situation caused you to activate your abilities and it played to your advantage. You immediately teleported away. The internal vibrations of Omen's abilities confused you again. You'd have to train with him more to get used to the sensation. There was no pain, surprisingly. Apparently that's the effect of the injection.
You form a blob of blinding shadow and send it towards the place where the two agents from the planet Omega were, then touch the earpiece and say in Omen's voice:
"How's it going?"
"Almost done. Run to the rendezvous point."
"Copy that."
You start running toward the place that flashed the most red. That's where you came from. Apparently you've already sent a message to Alpha land. You were almost there when you suddenly notice purple patterns on the floor. You look at the floor then at Iso running past you. In his eyes you notice a glint of some sort.
"Y/N"! - he shouts, but his shout is cut short as you find yourself in Iso's omega space.
Your powers automatically keyed off and all you could do was shoot.
Oh, crap.
Iso's a good shot. Any version of him. You're screwed.
The purple walls fall away and you find yourself one-on-one with him. He fires a few shots before he stops and looks at you. Several bullets hit you in the stomach, causing you to clutch at it with your hands. Blood came up to your throat. You coughed and looked up at him. He hesitated for a moment, but immediately fired a couple of final shots into your head.
"I'm sorry,”- was the last thing you heard before you were plunged into oblivion.
Tumblr media
A sharp jolt of pain makes you open your eyes. Tingles in your head and some other parts of your body bring you back to consciousness. Sage is sitting next to you, holding a few of her crystals. As soon as you open your eyes, she stops working.
"How do you feel?"
"It hurts,” - you squeak as another wave of pain hits your body.
"The first time is always like that,” - Sage nods. - "The next time you come back to life, it won't hurt as much. But it would be better if there were no next time."
"I died?"
"Yes. But you're alive and well now."
Your gaze slides across the room. You seem to have been treated in your own room. You notice the broad figure of Iso in your chair. He was sitting with his eyes closed. Most likely dozing.
"Rest,” - Sage said a little louder, obviously to wake Iso. But he didn't move. - "When he wakes up, let him come to me."
"Okay."
As soon as Sage disappeared on the other side of the door, Iso opened his eyes. You stared at him with incomprehension. A dissonance was building in your mind. He'd been keeping his distance and avoiding you, and here he was sitting in your room, blatantly ignoring Sage's hint. Although maybe he was worried that you were dead. It's not every day your ally dies on the battlefield.
"Why didn't you leave? "- You ask, pulling yourself up. Your body still ached.
"Should I? "- He answered a question with a question.
You didn't know what to say. You didn't want him to leave. It was easier and calmer to be with him, but at the same time, you felt resentful of him, of what had happened over the last week. So you lay back down, leaving the question unanswered. You covered your eyes and heard a chair creak and footsteps heading for the door. More than anything, you didn't want to be alone right now.
"Don't go,” - you whisper.
"I wasn't going to,” - you open your eyes and see him leave his shoes at the door, then walk toward you and sit on the bed. It sags under his weight, and you roll a little toward him. You cover yourself with the blanket in embarrassment. He heard.
The blanket slides off your head and you look innocently at Iso. The man looks at you with a slight smile. His violet eyes look so beautiful and bright, it takes your breath away. The guy lets out a small chuckle, after which his hand rests on your cheek.
"This is why I didn't want to see you. I'm drowning in your eyes like a swamp, and I'm afraid I won't get out of these feelings,”- Iso's sudden confession confused you even more.
You opened your mouth to say something, but your thoughts traitorously tangled into a huge deep. Yes, you liked Iso, but you didn't think anything serious could come out of it. Relationships aren't welcome in the service after all. Self-deception, avoiding thoughts and all that. You've tried everything and you're almost there, but all these events are only driving you deeper into the maelstrom. You very much want to fall into this hurricane of not only passion, but already romance.
"Are you just gonna keep quiet? Y/N? "- Iso is leaning over you. -" Am I being rejected?"
He laughed. He knew.
"Keep drowning,” - you said, and then pulled the boy into a kiss.
The gentle touch of his lips made you forget about the pain and worry. Just because you both have a weakness now doesn't make you the best agents in the protocol, but since Raze and Killjoy could do it, why can't you? Iso hovers over you as he continues to kiss you, then slowly pulls back and dusts your face with kisses. You smile, after which you hug the Chinese man tightly.
"How long has it been? "- you start your question as soon as the guy lies down next to you.
"As soon as you came to the protocol,” - he played with your hair. One of his ears was missing an earpiece. - "When we met eyes in my ears some romantic song was playing in my ears and I just… Fell in love with your eyes. It's corny, but no one can control their own feelings. I thought it would go away, but after that party… You know."
"You didn't have to do that, did you?"
"I could have,” - he nodded, -”but why miss the chance? Anyway, I'm not meant to build a family with ordinary people."
"You mean you want to build a family with me?" - You're stunned.
"Anything's possible in the future."
"Oh, why did Sage call you? Are you hurt? "- You changed the subject.
"No. She's just busting me for exposing our relationship a little."
"A little? You did what?"
"Another time,"- he kissed your cheek. His phone vibrated. - "Mrs. Healer is very unhappy and demands me to her office."

Back Up Often, Back Up Local.
Hey kids, it's your local elder millenial coming at you live to remind you that anything on a cloud server or a social media network (including this one) is not to be considered secure. If you have artwork or writing you value, back up often, and back up local. Storage space is cheap, get yourself some USB sticks or an external drive and store that shit, or god forbid, if you're lucky enough to have access to an optical drive every so often burn a disc of archived works. There is no promise that an online server you post to will be there tomorrow. I've just learned that ello shuttered overnight and took down all the artwork stored there. It's no big one to me because I store local, but there's a lot of people who are hurting due to the loss, and I've been there kids. I did heaps of really interesting writing and artwork that I published on servers that don't even exist anymore. Even well maintained, well loved servers reach the end of their lifespan and are switched off, decommissioned, and or compromised. Power outages, natural disaster, the works - keep it in your own hands, and you know exactly where it is and what state it's in.
If you have questionable living arrangements or dangerous people around you that make your art or writing insecure at home, the next best thing is to email to a trusted friend and get them to download and store local.
Storing across multiple platforms is better than nothing, I guess, if you don't have that option - so Google Drive and Protondrive, multiple different email addresses (mail them back and forth) and private posts on networks on which you don't usually publish (Dreamwidth is still going strong and is actively involved in fighting restrictive social media laws - they deserve your attention).
If you write in Google docs, for the love of pterry back it up or post it privately somewhere else once it's done.
No one tells the young people, so I am going to - back up often, and back up local. If you live through your art, keep it in your own hands. Do not trust corporations to keep your shit safe for you, and remember - you can never have too many backups.
