The red, amber and green lights of the traffic pole caught the shine of nearby street lamps blearily. They reflected in shallow puddles and shop windows; stark contrast to the darkness of night blanketed atop the sky.

The odd car whirred past, thudding dull as it barreled over a speed bump, and the pitter-patter of rain was surprisingly loud in the quiet backroads of Cutter Lane.

Y/n's hands tightened around the handle of her umbrella and she shivered. Her dress, just below mid-thigh and admittedly thin in material despite it's Velvet nature, was definitely not made for cold English weather. But... she was just a girl and had attended the rock concert of one of her favourite bands an hour prior.

She checked her phone again, watching the 'minutes till arrival' label on her uber app with a frustrated glare. She'd walked a great deal away from the venue, even passing the O2 Arena (which still had it's own concert on at the time) in an effort to miss that flux of rockers calling for ubers themselves. However, it seems her plan failed.

The uber was still five minutes away and the clock refused to budge down.

She was half beginning to think her app had broken or something, and readied herself to work up the courage to text the driver, but her silent contemplation was broken by the sounds of quiet whimpering. Turning on her heel, her eyes raved hesitantly over the expanse of street. In truth, she was half expecting it to be some city fox or a homeless person shifting in their sleep, but she instead found them settling on a hunched figure.

First thought...

She whirled back around as soon as possible, eyes tightly closed in an attempt to make herself invisible. She learn well enough growing up not to interact with random men that were making weird as fuck noises on the streets. Often they're high on something.

Just ignore him, Y/n and he'll leave you alone...

But, as she stood, stiff as a board under a street lamp, she felt guilt creep up to her.

The guy didn't even have an umbrella... He seemed to just ignore the water soaking him - despite not having exactly perfect attire for the weather.

She winces, craning her neck to see through the onslaught of rain, trying to ignore the soreness in her fingers around the umbrella handle as the tips turn red from the cold.

Actually... maybe he wasn't some dangerous guy, high as a kite, at all. His hair was a dark blue, wet so perhaps a lighter shade, and he wore an expensive pair of Chanel earrings, paired with a thick Balenciaga choker. His jacket was fluffed, the brand she couldn't really tell, and his shoes were those thick platform sneakers she sees cool University students walk around in.

Her throat must still be a little sore from screaming her head off at the concert.

He jumped, body taking a screen shot as his face snapped up to hers, hands that were once over his face slamming down to his thighs with a definitively-not-dry thud. His eyes were wide and dark brown, the image of a cornered rabbit flashing inside Y/n's mind eye. Smudged makeup was around them, the shine of a lipgloss somehow still intact on his heart-shaped lips.

His face was all soft edges and manic sorrow.

He was... pretty.

More than pretty.

Y/n felt her face heat up, damning her own attraction for now making her feel heaps more uncomfortable, and she swallowed thickly. She thrust out her arm straight as an arrow, umbrella still in hand but now positioned over his head, and calmed her breathing.

"Cheer up," she smiled lopsidedly, cursing in her mind at how demanding that must've sounded.

He didn't reply, eyes still wide and trained on hers, before they dragged themselves to where the umbrella was lent to him. There was a moment of silence where he went to grab it, before hesitating and looking to Y/n.

A more polite smile now graced her face and she nodded to him.

His fingers gently grasped the handle above her own hand, pinky finger lightly brushing against her pointer. The touch was near-unfelt due to how cold both their fingers were, but it still managed to allow butterflies invasion rights to her stomach.

Once she thought he had a good grip, she unfurled her fingers and stepped back.

Y/n watched as he lifted it so that it was more securely over his head and the way that, as he looked back to her, he now seemed more concerned for her and how she was dressed in this weather than he was. She was mostly dry, of course, and perhaps the umbrella wouldn't do much for him due to the fact he's already soaked through, but it's the thought that counts... right?

Rain was now beginning to dampen her clothing, low porosity hair thankfully saving her from looking like a drowned cat immediately and embarrassing her further, but there was definitely sweat on the back of her neck underneath it.

Her uber was parked around the corner.

Shoulders deflating slightly, she looked up from her phone and to the boy on the bench. Tear streaks still shined down his round cheeks and he sniffled slightly to clear his nose. His eyes look at her as if she's some sort of anomaly, eyes still wide and jaw tight as he tries to stop himself from crying again. It, admittedly, makes a part of her cringe at being placed so highly, not liking eye contact too much.

She was hesitant to leave someone clearly this distraught alone... but it's truly none of her business why he's like this to begin with. And he's not exactly talkative...

She's not sure exactly what... but something tells her he'll be okay.

"You'll be alright, yeah?" Y/n smiled softly, feeling her phone vibrate in her hand again, before inclining her head to one side and waving a small goodbye.

Almost in a daze, the pretty boy waved back. He seemed to want to say something more, his mouth opening slightly to perhaps ask her name, but Y/n was late enough as it is and needed to get enough sleep for her opening shift tomorrow. Talking to a cute, sad guy she gave her umbrella to just wasn't the priority. Turning around, her heeled shoes clacked in staccato against the concrete pavement as she walked around the corner; her right arm outstretched as she sent a thumbs up to her driver and his parked car.

Citizens of the European Union live in an internet built and ruled by foreign powers. Most people in the EU use an American search engine, shop on an American ecommerce site, thumb American phones, and scroll through American social media feeds.

That fact has triggered increasing alarm in the corridors of Brussels, as the EU tries to understand how exactly those companies warp the economy around them. Five years ago, Shoshana Zuboff’s book The Age of Surveillance Capitalism neatly articulated much of lawmakers’ critique of the tech giants, just as they were preparing to enforce the flagship GDPR privacy law. Now as the EU enacts another historic piece of tech regulation, the Digital Markets Act, which companies must comply with starting tomorrow, March 7, a different critic du jour sums up the new mood in Brussels.

In his 2023 book, Technofeudalism, Yanis Varoufakis argues the big US tech platforms have brought feudalism back to Europe. The former Greek finance minister sees little difference between the medieval serf toiling on land he does not own and the Amazon seller who must subject themselves to the company’s strict rules while giving the company a cut of each sale.

The idea that a handful of big tech companies have subjugated internet users into digital empires has permeated through Europe. Technofeudalism shares bookshelf space with Cloud Empires and Digital Empires, which make broadly similar arguments. For years, Europe’s wanna-be Big Tech rivals, like Sweden’s Spotify or Switzerland’s ProtonMail, have claimed that companies like Google, Meta, and Apple unfairly limit their ability to reach potential users, through tactics like preinstalling Gmail on new Android phones or Apple’s strict rules for the App Store. “It’s not a problem to be a monopoly,” says Sandra Wachter, professor of technology and regulation at Oxford University’s Internet Institute. “It becomes a problem if you're starting to exclude other people from the market.”

Crowbarred Open

In answer to that problem, Brussels’ politicos agreed to the Digital Markets Act in 2022. It is designed to rein in the largest tech companies—almost all of them from the US—that act as gatekeepers between consumers and other businesses. A sibling regulation, the Digital Services Act, which focuses more on freedom of expression, went into effect last month. Wachter says they follow a long tradition of laws trying to protect the public and the economy from state power, wielded either by the government or the monarch. “With the rise of the private sector and globalization, power has just shifted,” she adds. Tech platforms rule over digital lives like kings. The DMA is part of the attempt to keep up.

The rules change tomorrow for platforms deemed “gatekeepers” by the DMA—so far including Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, and TikTok parent Bytedance. The law essentially crowbars open what the EU calls the gatekeepers’ “core services.” In the past regulators have proposed containing corporate giants by taking them to pieces. EU lawmakers have adopted the motto “Don’t break up big tech companies, break them open.”

In theory, that means big changes for EU residents’ digital lives. Users of iPhones should soon be able to download apps from places other than Apple’s app store; Microsoft Windows will no longer have Microsoft-owned Bing as its default search tool; Meta-owned WhatsApp users will be able to communicate with people on rival messaging apps; and Google and Amazon will have to tweak their search results to create more room for rivals. There will also be limits on how users’ data can be shared between one company’s different services. Fines for noncompliance can reach up to 20 percent of global sales revenue. The law also gives the EU recourse to the nuclear option of forcing tech companies to sell off parts of their business.

Homegrown Challengers

Most tech giants have expressed uncharacteristic alarm about the changes required of them this week. Google has spoken of “difficult trade-offs,” which may mean its search results send more traffic to hotel or flight aggregators. Apple has claimed that the DMA jeopardizes its devices’ security. Apple, Meta and TikTok have all filed legal challenges against the EU, saying new rules unfairly target their services. The argument in favor of the status quo is that competition is actually thriving—just look at TikTok, a technology company launched in the past decade, now designated as one of the so-called gatekeepers.

But TikTok is an exception. The DMA wants to make it normal for new household names to emerge in the tech industry; to “drive innovation so that smaller businesses can really make it,” as the EU’s competition chief Margrethe Vestager explained to WIRED, back in 2022. Many hope some of the new businesses that “make it” will be European. For almost every big tech service, there is a smaller homegrown equivalent: from German search engine Ecosia to French messaging app Olvid and Polish Amazon alternative Allegro. These are the companies many hope will benefit from the DMA, even if there is widespread skepticism about how effective the new rules will be at forcing the tech giants to change.

Today, US-based Epic Games said Apple had terminated its European developer account, soon after Epic announced it would take advantage of the DMA to open a new games store for iOS. Apple told WIRED that Epic was untrustworthy and Apple has the right to terminate the accounts of any of Epic's wholly owned subsidiaries following a 2021 court judgment. “Apple chose to exercise that right,” a statement provided by company spokesperson Rob Saunders said.

App Stores will be an early area of focus for DMA enforcement, Vestager said this week. But Europeans can’t expect the internet to transform overnight. In its early days, the new law’s effects will be more about the power struggles behind the curtain of the world’s biggest companies; not about making netizens’ lives easier. In fact, their online experience is likely to get messier at first. There will probably be even more website pop-ups. “This dominant position that these companies have is partially because we have been so addicted to convenience,” says Anu Bradford, a professor at Columbia Law School and author of Digital Empires: The Global Battle to Regulate Technology. The new rules will mean users have to reengage with what they want their online lives to look like, she adds. Defaults set by US corporations will no longer be chosen for them.

Instead the DMA’s objective is to remind Europeans what they traded in exchange for that convenience in the first place. The DMA is about power, not necessarily convenience. Whether Europeans will be able to remember that as their online worlds are cracked open remains to be seen.

My Bittersweet Story with Tumblr

I know it sounds cliché, but I’ve been on Tumblr way before your number even showed up. 😙It’s a love-hate relationship—I know that sounds contradictory, but my story with Tumblr is long… and deep.

It all started back in 2012. I was in my last year of high school, ready to leap into adulthood and college life. One day, I was sitting in class with a group of friends—Meram, Basma, Samia, and Sameera. No class, just girl talk and laughter. Suddenly, out of nowhere, Samia grabbed my hand, eyes full of tears, and said,

“Noura, I love you so much. You’re the best thing that ever happened to me.”

Now here’s the thing—I’ve always had a weird block when it comes to affection and emotions like that. I was shocked, like “Wait, what’s happening here??” 😭🫣

She told me she wrote something for me on Tumblr the night before, and that’s how I got curious and opened my first account.

At first, I thought it was just another photo-sharing app full of random English posts I didn’t understand. But something about it stuck with me. Every time I changed phones, I had to download Tumblr again. I don’t even know why. Maybe it was the emotional link to Samia… or maybe it just became part of me.

Over the years, Tumblr became my secret hideout. I’d come and go, write and disappear. I never saw the people on there as real. There was a wall between us, which made it easy to share embarrassing or powerful moments without feeling exposed. Sometimes I’d come back after months, dust off my blog, and find messages from people who had connected with what I’d written. And guess what? I ignored them all. Cold? Maybe. But honestly? I wish I’d kept that boundary. It could’ve protected me from so much. 🤐

Then came 2020—a year that flipped my life upside down.

I had just graduated from university. My closest sister, Judy, got married. She was the one who made life at home bearable. We had winter rituals: sitting in the back women’s room, opening the huge window to let the freezing air in, sipping warm drinks while Amjad baked us pastries. We’d talk all night until dawn prayers. Those were my golden days.

After she left, something inside me broke. I started sinking. Depression hit hard, though I didn’t understand it at the time. Add to that: the pandemic. I was supposed to start a new job, and just like that—canceled. Everything shut down. Every plan I had evaporated.

So I've been trying to wean off Audible for their accursed business practices, right? And I use Libby but 10 audiobooks only lasts me like 1 week if I pick long ones, so I'm like some kind of library werewolf who only borrows digital content for the full moon or someshit, ok?

So until my beloved wife NewPipe comes back from the war I've been listening to yt on Firefox, right? Well.

Yt is so determined to enshittify that if you don't disable the yt app (because you can't uninstall it which IMHO means it's officially, inarguably and forever bloatware now) it will open the app instead of the webpage with so little fanfare that if you aren't intentionally watching for it you won't even notice the window shift.

And like. I'm watching like 90 minute lectures from random professors from schools I'll never see giving talks to like 10 people in forgotten university backrooms or for like the anniversary of some church regarded as architecturally significant or as part of winning academic awards I've never heard of etc.

Some of these videos are from like 2013 and you can almost garauntee the speaker uploaded it or agreed to have it filmed + uploaded specifically because they wanted more people to hear their presentation than could or would be present when they originally made it. When you're nerdy about something you usually want to share it, these aren't YouTube Personalities(tm), they're sharing the obscure joys of their phD with losers like me who can't go to school.

You have to wonder if they would have chosen a different platform or gotten a website of their own to put it up on or something if they'd known their lectures, and I mean some of them are putting up entire 10+ hour courses recorded in their own classrooms for FREE solely because they wanted to and could, would become so thoroughly affected by corporate bullshit.
