If you're good at math:
1. Concept Integration:
Find sums which require in-depth knowledge of more than one mathematical concept to solve. A simple example would be using algebraic expressions as sides of a right angled triangle and finding hypotenuse using Pythagoras theorem and then finding the square root of the polynomial by factorization.
2. Proofs:
Practice writing and understanding mathematical proofs. This helps you develop logical reasoning skills and a deeper understanding of the foundational principles behind mathematical concepts. Very Very important even if it is excluded in the syllabus.
3. Explore Multiple Methods: A continuation of the previous tip; when you learn derivations, you can find short-cuts that work out for you. Or you can explore other methods of solving like graphing two simultaneous linear equations to solve, etc
4. Marry a whiteboard: Seriously, it's so much fun to solve questions on whiteboard. Also, Feynman technique (it's basic so not preaching)
5. Give Olympiads:
Don’t shy away from tackling advanced topics or materials beyond your current coursework. Give Olympiads. They broaden your thinking capacity, and they're reallyyyyyy fun to prepapre for ✨
6. Develop Intuition:
Work on developing mathematical intuition. This involves recognizing patterns, making educated guesses, and estimating solutions before rigorously solving problems. Cannot stress enough on this point. I got a guess correct. It was fill in the integer type questions and the probability of getting an answer right if picked at random was 1/100. Still, went with my gut instict and got it correct.
7. Use Online Resources:
Platforms like Khan Academy, MIT OpenCourseWare, and Coursera offer advanced math courses and lectures that can supplement your learning.
8. Follow me: most important tip 😉😁

A couple weeks ago I substitute taught an [online] AMC¹ prep class (unreasonably proud of the way I'm afaik the only one without a college degree among like 50 instructors) and while talking to a few friends about it I took pics of a couple of my middle-school-mathlete-era trophies from the AMC and Math Olympiad as a silly brag: look I'm clearly qualified to teach this I was there once and winning at it! and one's for a top score in the grade, when my graduating class/size of the grade was about 400 students. I didn't win every time, so really I'm more like 1 in 100 here. But let's be generous for the sake of the example. 1 in 400 at competition math!
But the thing I felt as a kid so instinctively, and still often think of now, is that 1 in 400 is nowhere near good enough for anything real. 99.75th percentile, right? In NYC alone that's 21,000 people better than you.
A one-in-400 football player wouldn't make a decent college team, never mind the NFL. A one-in-400 SAT score certainly won't get you into Harvard. (Trust me, I'd know-- 800 math / 780 reading.)
So I'd have my brief moment of pride (often not even that, lol) but like, I never forget the scale of the task. That you should search broadly for your 1-in-400 niche, and once you find it, push. Intentional, directional effort. Take what you can; ask for forgiveness, not permission; become what you are! When I was 16 this was the only thing I ever thought about.
Now, I do at least sometimes temper it with thoughts of my partner or of reading in the park. Some balance is required. I think that if I still thought of nothing but "in what areas of my life can I most effectively find success (usually meaning financial success) by figuring out what skills I am the best at" I would burn out and make myself miserable. I also care about what things I personally enjoy doing-- you have to choose goals you can at least tolerate! But for me, a big part of the joy is in the doing (one of the few people on earth who enjoys looking for jobs? I've had to do a lot of it in my life so I kind of like doing interviews. Sure, it's stressful, but it's a nice bit of controlled stress!)
Anyway, as I prepare to maybe go back to the "regular" workforce for a bit after my long stint as a joyful-weirdo freelancer, I think it does me good to remember that even the "regular" workforce is a means to an end-- it pays money, potentially provides useful experience, and gives you something to put on your resume that you can use for future jobs, and ideally the job is reasonably tolerable along with it as you inch your way closer to the sort of work you think you would truly be best at. and at each step you push the 1-in-400 towards a 1-in-10k-or-so. in the end each job is just another step, not a vital element of your identity!

Chess: A Game of Strategy and Skill
Tumblr media
Introduction to Chess
What is chess?
Chess is a two-player board game played on a checkered gameboard with 64 squares arranged in an 8x8 grid. Each player begins with sixteen pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns.
Brief history of chess
The origins of chess can be traced back to ancient India, where it was known as "chaturanga." Over time, the game spread to Persia, Arabia, and Europe, evolving into the modern version we know today.
Basic Rules of Chess
Setup of the chessboard
The chessboard is set up with each player's pieces placed on opposite sides. The board is oriented so that each player has a white square at the right-hand corner.
Movement of pieces
Each type of chess piece has its own unique way of moving across the board. For example, the knight moves in an L-shape, while the bishop moves diagonally. The objective of the game is to checkmate the opponent's king, putting it in a position where it cannot escape capture.
Objective of the game
The ultimate goal in chess is to checkmate your opponent's king, putting it in a position where it is under attack and cannot move to any unoccupied square without being captured.
Importance of Strategy in Chess
Importance of planning ahead
In chess, strategic thinking is essential for success. Players must anticipate their opponent's moves and plan their own strategy accordingly.
Tactics vs. strategy
While tactics focus on short-term maneuvers and specific sequences of moves, strategy involves long-term planning and overarching goals.

Chess and Creativity
How chess can foster creativity

hiiiiiiii helloo whats the scioly fedex fic abt exactly? im curiosu
Hi! I apologize for not getting around to answering this earlier but I was busy today.
So scioly is an abbreviation of Science Olympiad. (Other teams call it science O. Those teams would be wrong) scioly has 23 Events in all different scientific disciplines, from events that involve math to those that rely heavily on studying to building contraptions and even a couple of lab-based events. The event roster is different every year, with some events being rotated and some that stay constant.
You are allowed fifteen people on a team to cover these events, and two or three people (depending on the events) can be on each event so most people study 3-4 events.
Then you take the bus, fill it with people and things (including those contraptions mentioned above and lab kits and a gadgillion other things) and drive to competitions. Some competitions are also online. A lot of competitions are hosted by local universities and others are high schools. I won't drop any specific names because I don't want to reveal my location on the internet.
Then there are about three and a half levels of competition: invitationals which are mostly learning opportunities--these will be most of a team's events in a year--then there's regionals. It depends on the number of teams in the state but the top few teams (the entire 15 person squad) will go on to state and then the top team there (might be more in other states) will go on to nationals.
So specific events ge their own ranking in each of those 23 events and that usually comes with medals at college hosted competitions and ribbons at high school competitions. (It's also funny when a member of the scioly team at your school in previous years orders the wrong medals.) The team's score is calculated like golf; (ae says, not fully aware of how golf works) each place in those 23 events are added together and the lowest summation wins.
So take all of that, and slap it onto a fedex high school au :) does it sound like an excuse to infodump about scioly? Because that's a large part of it
