Is technology redefining human connection? #1
Well, is it? Of course, it is. Since the launch of technology, we as humans have gradually changed the way we interact and connect with one another, that’s a no brainer. Gone are the days of Pen Pals (what were they again?) nowadays we spend most of our time looking like this.
Tumblr media
In Week 1 we looked at the brilliant internet research pioneer and psychologist Sherry Turkle’s “Connected but alone” (TED-Ed 2013) presentation which explored the idea that people who are only connected through technology are ultimately becoming disconnected from their inner and outer lives AKA the real world. As Asano (2017) notes, as the years have gone past the amount of time people spend on social media increases, on average teens now spend up to 9 hours a day on social platforms, that nearly 64 hours a week browsing the likes of Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, Twitter, Pinterest. It’s kind of scary to think that some teens only know this digital age we live in, what was there to do before the internet and social media?
youtube
For those baby boomers, social media is often defined to as “the many relatively inexpensive and widely accessible electronic tools that enables anyone to publish and access information, collaborate on a common effort, or build relationships” (Murthy 2013, p. 7-8). Networks like Facebook and YouTube exceed billions of monthly active users, however as Newman (2014) notes, there is only a very small percentage of people who physically see their social connections on a regular basis. This is where the issues come in and what Sherry Turkles presentation highlights, have we lost touch of reality? It’s become seemingly too easy to just send a text or a “wave” in Facebook messenger to check in on a friend rather than physically see them in person (as that would take effort). In doing so as Taylor (2009) suggest, are we substituting real relationships for virtual ones? People can now fulfil many of their needs for connection through online communities without the fear of rejection, as they can present their best faces to their digital circles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Digital or Online Communities is defined as “a group of people who regularly interact with each online, especially to share information and opinions on a common interest, with users of the internet” (Oxford Dictionary 2017). If you are a part of any of the social media networking sites mentioned above, you are a part of a digital community. Digital communities can be seen as a positive as you can interact with likeminded individuals anytime anywhere 24/7 or as Danah Boyd (2012) puts it, being “always-on”. The downside to being “always-on” is you lack physical stimulation, “there is no substitute for the depth and breadth of real, flesh-and-blood relationships where you can see, hear, smell, touch and sense the other person” (Taylor 2009).
Tumblr media
A recent example surrounding the idea of social media and Turkle’s idea of people connected through technology becoming disconnected from their inner and outer lives can see through this interview with Ryan “Fitzy” Fitzgerald – who reveals his dependence on social media is having serious effects on his relationships.

The record was set in Japan Japanese engineers have set a new record for data transfer speed over a single fiber optic cable (22.9 petabits per second, or 22.9 million Gbps), which is more than 20 times the entire world Internet traffic per second. This was more than double the previous world record of 10.66 petabits per second, according to the press release. Global Internet traffic per second refers to the total amount of data transferred throughout the global Internet in one second. This includes all types of online activities such as web browsing, video streaming, file downloading, online gaming and any other data exchanged between internet-connected devices around the world. [caption id="attachment_85637" align="aligncenter" width="780"] Global Internet traffic[/caption] One cable transmitted data at a speed of 22.9 million Gbit/s - this is 20 times faster To handle more Internet traffic, NICT researchers studied multiplexing technologies that utilize space and wavelength in fiber optic communications. The researchers found that each strand of a fiber optic cable could transmit data at speeds of 0.3 to 0.7 petabits per second. The total speed reached 22.9 petabits per second. The NICT team achieved this by applying advanced technology. This cable has 38 cores, each of which is capable of transmitting data in three modes, giving a total of an impressive 114 spatial channels. This increases overall throughput by using different independent data channels in different wavelength ranges. NICT experts hint that with further optimization and bug fixes, the system could potentially reach an impressive 24.7 petabits per second, which is more than 1,000 times faster than current fiber optic communication systems.

Only two per week. Premium subscribers still have unlimited A new version of the Telegram messenger has appeared for the iOS and Android operating systems. Among the innovations are recommendations of similar channels: when joining a channel, the user will see a list of similar public channels - they are selected automatically by the application. In addition, you can now repost the stories of friends and channels, and the story can be supplemented with your own text, audio track or video commentary. And you can select the circle of users who will be able to see the repost. The developers note that in order to protect privacy, you can only repost stories that are visible to everyone. [caption id="attachment_85233" align="aligncenter" width="387"] Telegram[/caption] Transcription of audio messages in Telegram has become available to all users In the new version of Telegram 10.3, decryption of voice and video messages has become available for all users. Let us remind you that since last year this opportunity has become available to owners of a Premium subscription. This feature allows you to quickly read the content of an audio message and even translate it into another language. However, users without a subscription can decrypt only 2 messages per week, while in the Premium version their number is unlimited. The developers note that this feature will appear in various regions gradually. [caption id="attachment_85234" align="aligncenter" width="780"] Telegram[/caption] Users also have the opportunity to add video messages on top of stories with their comments or simply an eloquent facial expression. Such video messages can be edited: changed size, moved to any point on the screen, and also selected the start and end point. There are also new features for Premium subscribers, in particular the ability to choose unique color combinations with logos for the profile to further emphasize the individuality of the page, as well as set individual wallpapers for individual chats for both yourself and the interlocutor (“free” users can use different wallpapers for chats only at home).

[caption id="attachment_57402" align="aligncenter" width="780"] WhatsApp application for iPad[/caption] The application is not available to all WhatsApp users yet. As noted by the thematic resource WABetaInfo, a test version of the messenger numbered 23.19.1.71, compatible with iPad, has become available for participants in beta testing of WhatsApp for iOS. A separate WhatsApp application for iPad has appeared, but not for everyone yet [caption id="attachment_57403" align="alignnone" width="768"] WhatsApp application for iPad[/caption] To take part in the test, you must sign up for the WhatsApp beta program and download the apps to your iPhone and iPad. Next, you need to set up WhatsApp on your iPad by going to the "Paired Devices" section on your phone. WABetaInfo notes that WhatsApp for iPad does allow you to use the app independently of your phone. At the same time, the iPad application synchronizes sent and received messages with other user devices. Unfortunately, it appears that some features, such as the real-time location feature and status updates, are not working properly right now.
