Patricia Era Bath (November 4, 1942 – May 30, 2019) was an American ophthalmologist and humanitarian. She became the first female member of the Jules Stein Eye Institute, the first woman to lead a post-graduate training program in ophthalmology, and the first woman elected to the honorary staff of the UCLA Medical Center. Bath was the first African-American to serve as a resident in ophthalmology at New York University. She was also the first African-American woman to serve on staff as a surgeon at the UCLA Medical Center. Bath was the first African-American woman doctor to receive a patent for a medical purpose. A holder of five paten she founded the non-profit American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness in Washington, D.C.

“I have a stye in my first day of ophthalmology. Coincidence? I think not.”

At my recent Cardiologist apt I had expressed my concerns about my high blood pressure and what kind of damage it could be doing to my body. It was the whole reason for the appointment in the first place. I asked multiple times:

Is this high blood pressure damaging my body?

If you don’t think my levels are problematic, then what numbers would be considered too high?

What are the red flag symptoms I should look out for that could indicate my blood pressure is causing damage?

Should I stay on fludrocortisone even though my blood pressure is very high?

I told the doctor that the highest I’ve seen my systolic blood pressure is 160s-170s when I’m not active. He didn’t answer the questions above and just kept reassuring me that as long as I can bring the numbers down then I shouldn’t worry about it causing damage.

After my Ophthalmologist appointment, I wrote my Cardiologist and told them that I had to run/walk to the appointment in order to make it on time and that my blood pressure was 190/96. I told him that the Ophthalmologist found damage to my optic nerve and ordered an MRI but that my eye pressure was fine and he thought it was caused by a chronic issue not just bc my blood pressure was high when I ran to the appointment.

This is what the Cardiologist said:

I feel like the last part was inaccurate and just them trying to avoid liability. Which is a shame, bc I want to work with the Cardiologist. I asked all the right questions. When he didn’t answer my questions I pushed a little more and he just kept reassuring me I was fine and just needed to focus on symptom management. He could have just told me to get off the fludrocortisone. He didn’t have to imply that I failed to give him an accurate description of my problem bc that’s just not the case at all and it makes me feel like he is against me rather than with me.

Student: Is that genuinely the reason why it’s done like that?

Ophthalmologist: Probably the biggest one, yeah.

I had my Ophthalmologist follow up on Wednesday. Due to things out of my control, it had been rescheduled for 8:30 am with a different doctor. Long story short it was a 3hr physically excruciating ordeal and a great reminder not to accept morning appointments. Part of that time was spent in sub-freezing temperatures while I waited for the office to open. The appointment itself was with a Dr who didn’t want me as a patient. He refused to see me for over an hour. He didn’t understand why a young “healthy” person (whom he had never met) would need their eyes checked by an ophthalmologist so he like…just refused to come in on time for the scheduled appointment? The office worker literally had to call him and convince him to see me because he wanted to cancel it even though I was already there (per the request of the other ophthalmologist).

The good news is that my optic nerves do actually appear to be improving a bit, so the damage was most likely related to the anemia from my ruptured fibroid or whatever. The other good news is my lovely Ophthalmologist (who actually asked about my medical history and showed genuine interest in helping me) will be back in a few weeks and I won’t ever have to have an appointment with the abelist Dr again. I wish I could have had a better experience but at least the optic imaging is objective and not dependent on a old white guys 5 second evaluation of someone he’d never met.

And no, I’m not going to report him. It’s taken me days to recover from that appointment and I’m getting so sick of dealing with a corrupt healthcare system. I can’t bring myself to get involved anymore.
