Monday in Wine Nerd Nirvana : ep144
Fact … Rich people have big soft beds with huge fluffy duvets. We have zero incentive to get out of bed and yet we’re both up bright and early. Dressed in workout gear we go for a long hike in the morning fog through the vineyards. We end up miles away from Henrik’s chateau in St. Helena at a cafe serving exquisite cappuccinos and European style scones.
We’re on relationship day 3 and Cheyenne has no concern whatsoever for her own vanity. She’s wearing no makeup, her face is bright red from the hike and her hair soaked in sweat. She’s just perfect.
The fog has lifted to a silvery overcast and it’s only a matter of time before the blue sky emerges. It’s 10am-ish by the time we return to the chateau and we’ve worked up a mighty good sweat. We both - mistakenly - decide to jump into the freezing cold swimming pool to cool off, and then immediately run shivering through the chateau toward a warm shower, leaving sopping wet footprints on Henrik’s priceless parquet floors. We stand under the shower in each other’s arms until the shivering stops.
Cheyenne: Do you think it’s too early for wine tasting?
Me: At 10am? Somebody’s gotta be open by now. Whatcha thinkin’?
Cheyenne: Maybe catch an Uber over toward the Silverado Trail side of the valley and just see what we can find?
Me: Henrik has some e-bikes in the garage. If they’re charged up, we could do some drinkin’ and biking!
Cheyenne: That sounds super fun!
Me: I’ll bet you five bucks that bicycling under the influence is illegal.
Cheyenne: I’ll bet you five more than I don’t care.
Me: Well … it’s settled then. Boosted bikes around the valley!
Much to my relief the e-bikes are charged and ready to go.
Cheyenne: Sheesh … his garage is nicer than my house. What’s all of the memorabilia for?
Me: Henrik loves Ferraris.
Cheyenne: Ohh. Is that what “the convertible” is?
Me: Yes. He’s got two actually, but we’re going to take the Ferrari California.
Cheyenne: There’s a Ferrari called a California? Aren’t they from Italy?
Me: It’s a state of mind thing. Check this out.
I point out the writing on the California badge, it uses the same cursive font as the California license plate.
Cheyenne: To be honest, I’m not impressed with cars, but that is really really cool. I love the attention to detail. I guess that’s what you get when you pay $100,000 for a car.
Me: $300,000.
Cheyenne: Damn dude. He has two??
Andiamo!
Our first stop on the e-bikes is the impressive Silver Oak estate. The winery is a statement piece, constructed from hand-quarried limestone reclaimed from an 1800’s flour mill in Coffeyville, Kansas.
We’re early. Specifically, we’re earlier than should be allowed for a day-drinking binge to begin, but burgeoning love knows no bounds nor limits. Silver Oak’s glasshouse wine library takes Cheyenne’s breath away. It’s equally stunning both architecturally, and in the depth of the collection which it contains. With every Silver Oak vintage dating back to 1970, it’s a wine nerd’s nirvana. Shy is so happy that she is bopping her fingers to the music and twirling around in exasperation.
We enjoy a tasting at a big limestone and wood bar. There’s fierce competition amongst top wineries to find the best wine pourers. I wouldn’t dare call them sommeliers, because their knowledge is typically rote and specific to the winery providing their employment. Wine knowledge is the least important of their skillset. Top wine pourers are like the British Royal Family … attractive, charming, and exceptionally good at making smalltalk. Silver Oak’s pourer is first class and is the perfect ambassador for their brand. We leave impressed.
Henrik’s e-bikes each have a wicker basket installed in front of the handlebars for transporting souvenir wine glasses home. It’s a handy and thoughtful feature.
The number of world class wineries between Henrik’s chateau on Zinfandel Lane and Silver Oak is astonishing. Opus One, Turnbull, Cakebread, Grgich and Rutherford to name a few. By the time we reach The Prisoner Wine Company we are properly shitfaced and have two picnic baskets full of souvenir wine glasses.
Red wine can sneak up on you. We try our best to take the tasting at The Prison seriously, but we’re diagonally parked in a parallel universe. Tomorrow we’ll wonder where half of these wine glasses came from.
We ride the final mile back to Henrik’s chateau like a pair of drunken sailors on port leave, and end up under the duvet in our guest bedroom watching the room spin before a long and much deserved afternoon nap.
