TES III Morrowind post -

A Nerevarine that, for all their humility, does not escape the power of the Heart. They wielded the Tools. They touched it even closer than the Tribunal or Dagoth Ur ever did, as the Nerevarine removed the Dwemer spell barrier channeling the power through the Tools. The Heart of the world, that was made to satisfy the other, that laughed at destruction and loved existence too well to cease. The same Heart that changed the spirit of Voryn Dagoth into Dagoth Ur merely by proximity.

A Nerevarine that chooses to not become a god. Not because Vivec never revealed the technique, nor because Indoril Nerevar chose not to in the past, nor because Azura is watching. But because they see the wreckage it made of people that might have once been true friends, Nerevar and House Dagoth and the Tribunal, and how the blessings the Tribunal thought eternal were, in the end, as impermanent as their underlying mortality. The Heart and its power was not theirs, but the world's.

A Nerevarine that touches the Heart, twice-insulated by Dwemer gauntlet holding knife and hammer, cutting at the pericardic seal on its overflowing power. And a Heart that "sees" a little mortal creature who chooses to accept the struggle given from their shared creator, Lorkhan. The Heart does not have a will of its own, but it is made to satisfy the other.

The Nerevarine changes. Perhaps it's the echo of dying near the Heart in a past life, perhaps it's because they chose to follow what others tried to force into a destiny, perhaps it's dumb luck. Mortals cannot stop change. Not even ageless mortals pretending to be gods, nor thrice-loyal stewards become devils, nor a hero healed of the divine disease and given accidental agelessness. The Nerevarine changes.

Are they Nerevar, or did they become a Nerevarine? Were they tricked, or have they tricked everyone else? Is this Nerevar a true rebirth, a reincarnation through sympathetic Azura reborn unaware? But would that also not leave them as processed through another's will as Trinimac was to become Malacath? Or would that be Arkay of death and birth, or even Akatosh of time, who ate and changed them? Does it even matter? It seems not to, right up until they are standing next to a power that makes death of immortals and eternal life of mortals. A known aid to Mantling. Hell of a time, when the Sharmat is breathing down your neck, to start remembering the trusting face of Voryn Dagoth. Or are the memories like dreams, and the Nerevarine has been sleeping this whole time?

The Nerevarine awakens, and changes.

Maybe now they always hear their heart and the hearts of others, beating away. Or they feel the current location and status of the Heart, locked away in magma flows and safe from tampering. Maybe they can change swiftly between Chimer and Dunmer, and Azura smiles and does not say if it's her power or their own. Or they can change between Mer and Man, or even Beast. Maybe it's only between their reborn shape, whatever species it may be, and that of Indoril Nerevar.

Whenever they look at the Imperial merging of Akatosh and Shor in tapestry or stained-glass window, the back of their skull aches and their heart feels ready to beat out of their chest. Sometimes they feel stabbing pains through the chest and their feet go numb and their face feels slack. The robe brushing their skin, the candle-smoke wafting into their nose, the chanting words pouring out of their mouth: it all feels like betrayal. Other times they feel ready to break into eight pieces, or like they might reach into their enemy's chest and pull out the heart without breaking skin.

(They tell none of this to Vivec when they return, or Almalexia when ensnared into her new scheme. They are surrounded by people in these cities named after gods who do not deserve it, people celebrating the defeat of Dagoth Ur and the return of Nerevar. Which the Tribunal now says they always knew was coming, but had to play the part.

And the Nerevarine wonders why they find themselves wanting to ask Sotha Sil for advice, when he is the enemy, and might even have been the first traitor of the three. Then they come upon his mechanical corpse, and before they realize the full implications, they think, Ah. Ayem went after the least resolute, the most likely to help me . . . Wait. Oh shit-)

Maybe they can feel where - although it's more like when, but sideways - time almost broke again, in the heart chamber. Was that the second time they were in there, if counting past lives, or merely the first? They can feel a . . . a something, a somewhen, a different time in which Vehk, Seht, and Ayem were gods from the beginning, or the Dwemer properly ascended, or the Nords overran Resdayn, or Nerevar believed Voryn and together they killed his teacher, his friend, his wife-

Time flows and they can sense the eyes of the gods looking at them through the veil. Either they go crazy and scream at them all like the Whitestrake did, or they choose - choose, again and again - to continue acting of their own power and volition. It's all a mortal can do.

Conspiracy Theories About Talos

I saw nientedenada’s post about Talos and it got my brain moving again about the ways in which I dislike Talos’ portrayal with regard to the Nordic Pantheon. Varieties of Faith claims that Ysmir is the Nordic aspect of Talos, but the title/position of Ysmir* predates Tiber Septim by at least 3000 years. So that makes it very unlikely that “Ysmir” is just “the Nordic aspect” of a god who didn’t come on the scene until the Third Era. 

*What, exactly, is meant by naming a hero Ysmir is unclear. It’s thought that Ysmir means “king” and/or “Dragon of the North” in the old tongue. Is it the title of the Nordic Kings? A title given to Nordic demigods/cultural heroes? An acknowledgement that the hero is an avatar of Shor, chief of gods? As with many things, the lore is incomplete and open to interpretation. We do know that several heroes have held the title before.

Nientedenada’s post mentions that one interpretation of Talos is as an aspect or mantle of Lorkahn, which makes a lot of sense to me. If we keep going with that, but from the Nordic perspective, then let us consider the following:

Lorkhan = Shor

The Nordic Pantheon is cyclical. Gods die and are reborn. The world itself is part of a cycle of destruction and rebirth. 

Shor is a dead god (along with Stuhn), killed by Auri-El in the Dawn Era. Presumably, one day Shor will be reborn.

Talos/Ysmir and Shor are both gods of warfare and conquest.

So one possible interpretation of this is that, at least in the Nordic belief, the apotheosis of Tiber Septim into Talos represents the rebirth of Shor. What if previous Ysmirs were mantling the dead god Shor/Lorkhan? What if Tiber Septim, as Ysmir, ascended to divinity as the reborn Shor, preparing for the possibility of the world moving into its next cycle upon return of Alduin the World-Eater? I like this explanation better than the Imperial Cult’s explanation of “he was such a cool guy that the gods said hey dude, come join us."

Also, the Thalmor really hate Talos, supposedly because he was just some dude and, well, we can’t just let anybody become a god, we elves have standards you know. But do you know who else the elves really hate? Lorkhan (Shor), the trickster who forced the limitless et’Ada into becoming moral Elves and severed their connection to Aetherius. If the Men of Tamriel started to once again worship the elves' most hated enemy, that would probably cheese them off (maybe enough to, I dunno, start a war in order to make them stop?). 

There’s a lot that’s left unanswered with any interpretation of Talos (including “are Ysmir and the Shezarrine two sides of the same coin,” an idea that I think fits in nicely with this theory too), but wild speculation about TES lore is one of my very favorite things and “Talos is the reborn Shor” is my new favorite conspiracy theory about everyone’s most/least favorite god/man.

“There once was a hero named Ragnar the Red who went riding from Whiterun to Ol’ Rorikstead…”

Minerva put her head under a pillow and groaned. “How off key can you get?” she grumbled.

“Since when do you have musical training?” asked Onmund, who was looking through their supplies to make sure they had enough.

Minerva peeked out from under the pillow. “I don’t have much, but kids in Anvil are at least expected to be able to carry a tune. We have the main temple to the Art Goddess for Stendarr’s sake!”

Onmund blinked. “You guys have a temple to Dibella in Anvil? I’m surprised you don’t invoke her more often.”

Minerva gave a half-shrug, or as much as she could manage with a pillow on her head. “Never needed to. My granda’s a Legate and my mom’s a mage. Neither of those have anything to do with Dibella. I mean just because you’re from Windhelm doesn’t mean you pray to…um…what’s the shrine there?”

Onmund stared at her and smirked. “Officially, there is none. Unofficially, it’s Talos.”

Minerva blinked. “Oh. Uh…forget I said anything, then.” She gave a half-hearted laugh. “Hey, if Talos is so important then why do I always hear people swearing by this Shor guy?”

Onmund blinked. “Oh, right. You wouldn’t know probably. It’s kind of a local thing.” He sat on the bed. “Shor is what we call Shezzar. Or Lorkhan, or whoever. He’s the chief god for us….sort of.”

“Sort of?”

“Well, he can’t really be the chief if he’s dead, so his wife, Kyne, took over for him.”

Minerva nodded. “Kynareth.”

Onmund shrugged. “I mean…I dunno. I heard she’s just a nature goddess down south, so, not really the same as ‘Warrior Widow, Queen of Storms’.”

Minerva shook her head and laughed. “No, warrior is not the first thing I think of when I hear that name. I think Stendarr kind of took the warrior stuff in Cyrodiil. Patron god of the Legion and all.” Minerva frowned. “Wait, then…where does Talos fit into all this? I mean I know he’s a native son and all…” She smirked. “Although the people of Alcaire might dispute that…”

Onmund rolled his eyes. “That’s heresy and you know it.”

“That’s the version my Papa told me.”

Onmund sighed. “Well, whatever the case, he’s hailed as Ysmir Reborn, and the son and successor of Shor.”

“Shouldn’t that be Kyne, though? The successor, I mean?”

Onmund shrugged. “That’s the version I was told.”

Minerva laughed. “Okay, okay, I get it.”

“And Ragnar the Red was boastful no mooooooore….”

Minerva groaned and grabbed another pillow. “Hey!” Onmund laughed. “That’s mine!”

“When his rotten red head rolled around on the floor!”

Eye of the Storm

(A modicum of knoweledge for some of Enai Sion Mods is potentially required here)

To end the war without much bloodshed, Ulfric, down to one hold and desperate, offer a Traditional Nord Duel to the Empire Side as a way to end the war, between him and the Dragonborn, in the Windhelm Arena.

Breton Dovahkiin, Mage, Can't swing a sword to save her life. "A Traditional Nord Duel" forces her to not use magic however, so she's kinda fucked at the moment.

She can't really use the Thuum in it cause she used to make a huge deal in propaganda speeches for the Empire about how the Thuum should only be used to fight dragons or for religious purposes, so Ulfric's claim on the duel being honorable is moot, so she is there, no weapons, no armors, no tricks, no spells, no friends, no shouts, no nothing.

And she has to take the duel, cause if she doesn't it'll be a long and bloody siege and Ulfric has her husband Scout-Many-Marshes' friends, family and Union Chapter "hostage" so she doesn't know what will happen to them if the city falls, a relatively bloodless one on one might allow her to take the city without endangering anyone.

So, no spells, no friends, no tricks, just her fist, the few brawls she managed to win allowing her to have at least some modicum of experience in hand to hand.

Not going to be enough, even with the Gloves of the Pugilist on, but at least she'll try...

After all, she has one last trick up her sleave.

The fight is pretty one sided all around, as it is between a war veteran and a technically omnipotent mage who has however all of her sources of damage locked out of her... she narrowly avoids death, but he still manages to axe her straight in her chest, close to her heart, ready to plunge her into Darkness...

It was what she was waiting for.

The Lover Doom Stone, watching over her, activates, saving her from certain death with her embrace, as she grasps Ulfric's arm, still holding the axe, and holds it there. She's close enough to him now, a Nord, to have her own, Manmeri ancestry react to his Nord one, and in one, single moment, with kne, single smile.

A Thunder erupts from the darkening clouds, blue aura erupting from like a volcano, raising, condesning with the gathering storm, forming a... figure, hovering over her, superimposed onto her, its light clashing against the smoke and lightning, raining death right against her, but stopping into a halo, a crown of lighning forming at her head as the strenght of the Atmorans rushes through her veins, as green eyes turn blue.

"What is this trickery, Mage!" Ulfric cries out at the sight, attempting to dislodge the axe and failing, "Magic is forbidden in our duels, you're dishonoring our ancient trad-!"

"Dishonour our Ancient Traditions?!" The Dovahkiin mockingly says, her voice gaining a echoing timber, as if a second, inhuman voice is growling alongside her, sounding like crackles in a dark clouds, "You are so obsessed with how to twist and bend you "ancient traditions" to your whims, you can't even recognize when a Living God is standing right in front of you, or mistake the power within all Nords and their descendants for something like the Clever Craft..."

"You're not a Nord," he replies, unperturbed by the revelation, "You're a stinking, cheating Breton, and I-"

"I, am the culmination of centuries of breeding between Man and Mer," The Dovahkiin says, her voice getting louder, more static "I am a descendant to their every ancestry, every birthright, as long as I've given their culture the proper respect, as long as I've gotten in touch with my ancestral roots... something all of you could have done, had you cared enough about it to try. Your ancient Atmoran Birthright..."

"By Talos," Galmar mutters from the bastions, eyes widening as everyone in the Arena watches, astonished, and listen to the reverberating bellows, "The Avatar of Shor... This is impossible! No one after Ysmir Wulfharth ever managed to-"

Her Grip of Ulfric's arm strenghtens strenghtens, crushing Ulfric's Arm in her hands, a cry attempting to erupt into a Shout, to push her back, but she's faster, and with the figure, the Avatar overing over her, mimicking her every movement, she prepares her right fist, her left hand still holding him in place, and smashes it right against Ulfric's face with a sickening crunch, beheading him on the spot.

The world is silent.

And then, it erupts into madness.

"It's Talos' Will!" Some of the younger stormcloaks cry from the Bastions, eyes wide in fright at the sight of her leader dead, and a creature straight out of northern legend killing him, "She is the Avatar of Talos! She is Tiber Septim Reborn!"

The Civil War has ended.

"Did you hear? The Dragonborn... she killed Ulfric Stormcloak, with a single punch! Destroyed his very soul! They say She's Talos/Shor/Ysmir incarnate!"

The lost Dragon’s blood …those words ring with familiarity as the pieces of the past year fall into place for her. Elsa looks back at him from the vastness of Tamriel with a tearful half smile.

“With me,” her voice almost a whisper. “The Dragonborn and I …we conceived a child before he met his destiny with Alduin. My Shor.” She swallows the lump in her throat. “I will see him again one day in the halls of Sovengarde when my time to return comes.”

She is quiet, pensive. She cannot yet feel Hans’ child quicken in her womb but she feels their magic so strongly. It tangles with her own as though to soothe her aching heart.

“Days before, I was given a prophesy by the Greybeards. Your chalice holds the moon and stars. I didn’t understand it’s importance then but the months have revealed it to me.”

Also, the Nords are pretty special mythically being the descendants of the original wandering ehlnofey and those that sided with Lorkhan first. Their god has been reborn, of course they gave importance to Talos, even if his name to them was only held highly as Ysmir. Aka Wulfharth, another Shezzarine and ghost of Shor.

There's more going for this theory than anything going against it. Bethesda practically confirmed it with the image of his statue standing atop a snake and A Dream of Sovngarde.

Honestly it just seems like people against it are salty about Tiber's mythical importance because how much of an asshole he is lol, or that Nords are once again involved with something so big. But well, that's TES for you.

Hedwig Finding Herself

Mass media consumes everyone, whether it is watching the news, listening to the radio, following tweets from celebrities, media is everywhere. It plays a huge role in people’s everyday lives, but media can be dishonest and biased. There are so many movies in Hollywood that have main characters who are minorities. Those movies’ sadly focus on the challenges of that minority community and how to overcome them or the character is shown as different or oppressed. In Hedwig and the Angry Inch, the main character used to be known as Hansel, a boy who loved rock and roll. Due to wanting to escape communism, Hansel went through a botched sex change so she could marry a man and escape East Berlin. Throughout odd jobs, Hedwig met a misunderstood teenage boy named Tommy who is confused about his Christian beliefs. Hedwig and Tommy both find a love for rock and roll music and create songs together, just for Tommy to steel Hedwig lyrics and become a famous rock star. Throughout Tommy’s tour, Hedwig with her band and loyal groupies follow Tommy and preform at small restaurants near his venues. The movie Hedwig and the Angry Inch, demonstrates how media tends to have an oppressed main character who is depicted as lost, try to overcome challenges that only that minority may face while still trying to stay true to her identity.

           The main character Hedwig, is a transgender who forms a band that follows Tommy Gnosis, to find justice for Hedwig writing all of Tommy’s songs. Hedwig has no fame, she wears makeup, dresses in tight clothes, wears nail polish, and people tend to not look her way. Tommy Gnosis, the heterosexual rock and roll star, wears tight clothes, wears eyeliner, wears nail polish, and has a ton of fame. Hedwig and Tommy both have similarities when it comes to appearance, yet Tommy does not follow the strict gender representation of a boy and he still has fame. Does their sexuality delude their fame? Fausto-Sterling stresses that “labeling someone a man or a woman is a social decision” (Fasuto 3). Scientifically, Hedwig did not have a specific label, she was left with a botched surgery leaving her with an inch of flesh between her legs. On the outside she may have looked like a woman, but to some people she looks like a man dressing up as a woman. She is an oppressed character that makes her infamous who tries to seek justice for her music. Based on her appearance she is considered to be different or distraught. If Hedwig was a heterosexual woman who wrote Tommy’s song, the story line would be a lot different.

           Although Hedwig is a minority to society, she never strives away from her true self to find justice in her music. She never tries to be something that she’s not in order to become famous or allow Tommy to tell the truth about him stealing music from her. She does get unfair treatment with her not being able to be taken seriously and have ownership over her music, but she never tries to be what society wants her to be. Not once does she dress like a man or stop dressing the way she feels beautiful to please her audience. Gross explains how mass media displays gay people as weak, silly, evil, or corrupt, but that they also exclude and deny normality. In media, gays are never shown as normal people, there always has to be some type of violence, disappointment, or unfair treatment (Gross 17). Hedwig being the main character is not seen as normal and she does have disappointments with her career. She faces struggles that a heterosexual character did not have to face. Tommy stole Hedwig’s music, but no one believed her because of her appearance and lake of fame, yet Tommy is a heterosexual male who claims ownership of her music.

           One song that Hedwig sings is how she believed that two humans were joined together, they consisted of four legs and four arms and one head with two faces. In the song she sings that god separated them and from then on, two people have been looking for their other half (Hubley 2001). The movie shows the Hedwig is trying to find some type of justification for her botched surgery or searching for validation of her accomplishments. It seems that Hedwig is also confused about her own gender due to her surgery. Hedwig does not succeed emotionally for herself. At the end of the movie she does become famous but it is only because of an accident that Tommy and herself had. Once they get into a car accident and are photographed together, then Hedwig becomes known and Tommy’s popularity goes down. By the end of the movie though, Hedwig is reunited by her band and Tommy is begging for forgiveness, but does that scene happen in her head or in real life? The end of the movie is Hedwig naked, walking out of an alley. She is alone and unclothed at the end of the movie, that could also mean that she is reborn into society has her true, bare, self and has finally found self-peace.

On the Lorkhan subject, some folks say Talos is mantling him and assumed his place when he became a divine. But, and the following is confusing. How can that be if talos is an oversoul made by septim and wulfharth, who in the wikia is said to be the incarnation of Shor. Since Shor is also Lorkhan and Wulfharth is Shor would that mean Talos is Shor/Lorkhan reborn ... pretty much like Malacath is trinimac reborn ?

Yea that's pretty much it exactly. They're aspects of the whole, while being separate, so they can still mantle and become him. Arguably it's easier because they're ghosts of him. Ghosts tend to repeat the past which is what mantling is.
