Tell me it’s a Nightmare
A/n: I decided to give a bad dream I had to one of my favs, and this is now basically a horror movie. I’m sorry Goshiki <3
*G/n reader x Goshiki Tsutomu
Tumblr media
He’s sweating and shaking. Feeling like there was a word on the tip of his tongue, except the word was one he’d never heard before.
Goshiki was wound up tight as a wire, sitting in a dark, warm space in the aftermath of a bad dream.
His breathes are heavy and his eyes can’t make anything out yet.
ā€œI had a dream last night,ā€ he startles, looking over to you. You’re also awake, earlier than either of you ever willingly get up.
He clenches his fists, gripping the bed sheets on his lap tightly.
His reply is shaky, but tinged with a laugh. Trying to lighten the mood.
ā€œReally? Me too..ā€
In his dream there was a desperation he wasn’t sure he’d felt in such intensity before. Tsutomu knew he was desperate as far as people could be. Desperate for approval, and love. For a lot of things.
This desperation was like a bottomless pit though. It was him, except hungrier.
He had needed to go into the forest he saw over and over last night.
He watches you plop your head against a pillow, his breathes still shallower than what was normal.
ā€œWhat was your dream about?ā€ You ask quietly, eyes shining in the dark. Attention all on him.
He gulped, remembering.
The forest. The fenced off monstrosity he shouldn’t have wanted. His answer is so close to coming out but, he stops himself and says instead,
ā€œYou go first,ā€ he moves his hand to your shoulder, hands shaky and tries rubbing your arm as softly and smoothly as his nerves will allow. ā€œWhat did you dream about?ā€
The forest had been closed off. He recalled the shine of the fence, as he looked at your eyes in the dark. Still too dark to see much else. A wealthy company the owners of the land. It had pristine metal fencing that was six feet tall and easy to see through.
Yet the inside of that place was not what it seemed.
ā€œI dreamed about us.ā€
He turned his attention back to you. He had let his mind take him back to that place.
ā€œUs?ā€ He asked, confused.
You gave a crooked smile. The fence was crooked and should’ve just been preventing people from vandalism or something. Why was it so much worse inside? Why didn’t it show anything from the outside?
ā€œYou were kinda frantic,ā€ and your smile changed to one that showed you were confused by the dream like him.
ā€œAnd you kept running back into me before running away again, and then you relaxed at the end. After like, three hours.ā€
You looked embarrassed now.
ā€œIt was a little weird.ā€
ā€œThat sounds weird,ā€ he raised an eyebrow at you. Hands no longer shaking, he moved his hand to your cheek and pulled you close for a kiss on the forehead. ā€œWhat was up with your dream me?ā€
ā€œDid he not realize the love of his life was probably worried about him?ā€ He jokingly adds.
You lean into his hand, still cradling part of your face. ā€œYeah, I guess he didn’t realize that..ā€
Your eyes slide down, and he watches as you think.
His mind wanders again.
Goshiki couldn’t stop his eyes from following it. Walking by with no destination and no reason for the path he took always being by the fence. The feeling of being out of reach of the forests shadows left an odd prickling throughout his body, and it wasn’t something he could ignore.
The fence wasn’t hard to bypass.
Or he doesn’t think it was? He has the strange revelation that he doesn’t have any memory of getting through. Just his decision to go in finally. And then he was.
He was on the other side under a red light. When he looked up through too still branches and a suffocatingly stiffness, it was the moons light shining that crimson color.
It’d immediately felt like a betrayal. It was like he had been walking confidently forward, and taken a step down without expecting it.
Humiliation accompanied him as he looked around himself.
The company that owned the plot in his dream hadn’t used the forest for development and they’re hadn’t been plans for eventual construction. The fence, the unseen company behind it, they didn’t turn it into a park, they didn’t do anything besides keep people out with the fence.
ā€œI don’t remember how I got in,ā€ He murmurs softly, expecting you to look up. Hoping for some kind of question so he can give an explanation.
He could probably fumble through explaining if you asked it of him.
You’re still thinking though.
He sighs and brushes a bit of hair away from your face.
Besides how he got in, he can think back to everything else in a burning clarity.
Goshiki was scared almost the moment he was inside. But that fear was an iceberg. Only the tip was there when he began to walk slowly forward on a well trodden path. It felt like every time he moved his eyes, there was something new that was wrong. Moving his eyes off of the space ahead of him, he always felt the shivers of movement to the side and behind.
The tree tops were twisted, and the bark of the trees had jagged, protrusions. He eventually looked at them when a luminous patch of the red moon made it all the way down to where he could see. The pricks coming out of the trees were just nails. Nails he was thinking might be red from something other than the moon.
He had truly started to panic after that. He had been wrong about wanting to be in here.
ā€œPlease! Ple- please someone help!ā€
His words were just barely above a whisper.
Goshiki would admit it! He was wrong for wanting this! Whatever this was, it was all twisted!
He’d admit he was wrong to Tendou Satori if it meant getting out of this place! To Shirabu! To Ushijima… well he’d ask Ushijima for guidance he thinks.
It was the fear of being heard by the thing that slinked out of his eyes reach, that kept him from shouting that all out loud. His whisper had taken his strength. His voice was near useless.
Blindly grasping at straws, he decided to sprint along the path as fast as he could so he could get to the end. He’d get out of here! He’d find the end of this forest as quickly as possible.
He couldn’t stop himself from reaching out blindly, hazardously and was shocked when he grasped in front of himself, and met with a tree protruding in the middle of the path. It was three steps ahead from where he’d decided to run.
——
ā€œDarling,ā€
He jolted out of his nightmare’s grasps once again. Goshiki says your name in a stammer, before asking, ā€œw- what?ā€
His heart was hammering again with your eyes staring up at him. The only thing he can make out in the dark of the room.
He tells himself to breathe. To remember he’s safe, no blood dripping from his hands. Nothing as strange as nails from trees are real.
No path he’s forced off of when trees with nails begin to grow in his way.
It’s just you.
He needs to remember that…
He’s says your name like he normally does, taking in another deep breath. He says it reverently.
You’re staring unblinking before,
ā€œYou started breathing hard there. Are you alright?ā€
Goshiki loves how caring you are. People who’s hearts soaked into their words had always been comforting to him. He couldn’t always tell what people meant with their sentences and phrases unless they were like you.
Full of genuine concern.
Hidden jabs catching on a second later then they should, leaving him red and embarrassed were one of his least favorite things. He’s happy to have someone like you who always makes him feel relaxed, and like he doesn’t have to try so hard to understand things perfectly.
ā€œI’m okay, sorry for distracting you.ā€
ā€œDistracting me?ā€ You ask with a tilted head.
ā€œYeah, you were thinking,ā€ Goshiki finally puts his head back down on the pillows beneath him, but only after he’s close enough to where your foreheads are nearly touching. He’s pretty sure he catches a little smile from you as he lays.
ā€œAbout your dream?ā€ He ventures.
There’s a frown on your face at that.
And it only takes a second to catch something in your eye. Something that sends him straight back down his path.
His hand was off the branch in an instant. Blood was running down, from his hand to his arm. Tilting the bleeding appendage down, the blood oozing out hit the strange path he was on. Red reflecting red.
The tree had nails coming out of it.
Goshiki didn’t mean thorns, he meant honest to god metal nails. His dream had been full of the jagged things.
It was strange, and it left him queasy and bloodied.
It was also a dream, so why did it hurt? Was fake pain supposed to dig that deep?
Goshiki, when he had been in his dream, turned in a circle, staring, trying to understand. They all had them—real nails—sticking out of trees with that fence as a backdrop.
A fence he couldn’t get to without going off of the path.
He had to go down The path, it went upwards, blocked by tree after tree, going steeper and further into the forest, and while the moon was with him then, it would disappear if he tried to skirt the near completely blocked path. The path, if he went that way the dark would devour him. His foot trembled off of the trail regardless.
It was silly, because he knew in the dream that it wasn’t the trees that really scared him. It’s what was going to happen if he went off that path and met what was trembling and always out of view.
Your eyes seemed so bright staring at him right now. The bed you shared was warm. Hot.
The sheets tight around him.
Or was that his breathing making them feel that way? You were staring so intently, so earnestly watching him that he tried to keep himself together while he fell apart in your shared space.
It was so hot and your eyes made it so hard to want to leave, this was precious time together, but Goshiki had to get up, and he had to do it right now. He knew he did, because he was suffocating. A glass of water should help him calm down and cool him off, he reasoned through his struggle.
Slowly, almost like he was back in his dream, he began to peal the covers off of himself while you watched carefully. His heart was pounding out of his chest by the time you spoke.
ā€œWhat are you doing love?ā€
He was only halfway out of the blankets. They felt like they were burning now. He had to leave even with the sad look that was now on your face.
ā€œI’m sorry, I have to get up,ā€
He was near gasping for air. Head slowly filling with a fog, he was struggling to move the rest of the way off the bed.
ā€œI just need some air.ā€
He wished it wasn’t so dark in here.
ā€œLove, lay back down,ā€
Your voice floats to Goshiki. He tries to look at any place other than your eyes in the dark, as your voice rings out soothingly. ā€œIt’s alright, you look tired and you’ve had a bad dream, so you should rest.ā€
ā€œNo, no I- I just need some water and air, and you-
ā€œI?ā€ You ask abruptly.
ā€œUm, no. I don’t know. I just need water, please.ā€
He’s lost sight of your eyes as he finally manages to stand up. He’s panting as if it truly was a feat, standing up from the bed.
He’s almost sad he’s stood up, away from you. He needs space or water—maybe both—so however hard, he’s going to have to put up with the distance for a little.
Goshiki steps towards where the door is when he hears a creaking sound behind him. It’s a deadly sort of quiet in the aftermath of that one little noise, except it doesnt last long.
ā€œShit!ā€ Goshiki shouts as crashing comes behind him. Turning, he can make out the outline of not you—who for a moment he thought had fallen—but the bed in shambles and ruins on the floor.
He calls your name, scared your hurt, yet he doesn’t see any sign of you and he can’t find it in him to move from the spot he’s rooted to. It was so hard to stand from the bed and now he can’t move from this new spot.
A strange thought comes to him. Maybe he was holding the bed together, and that’s why it was so hard to get up.
That’s ridiculous though, and he needs to go to that wrecked piece of furniture and look for you. Desperate and feeling fear he can’t overcome, he tries to tell himself to move. To please, please, please look for you. He has to make sure you’re safe. That you’re alright.
ā€œCome on, come on, move,ā€ he urges himself. When that doesn’t work, he listens.
He’s being as silent as he can, his racing heart aside. He should be able to hear you.
The silence is all there is in this dark room.
And there is no body amidst that broken pile of wood. None he can make out from his spot and through the lack of light.
The comfort he had in bed with you is gone and replaced by a simple, mind numbing fear.
He stares for a long time, with tears slowly forming in his eyes. Goshiki is near sobbing when a smell begins to burn his nostrils.
ā€œUghh!ā€ He coughs, and it turns into hacking.
The smell is so invasive and putrid, that it shocks his body into movement. He stumbles forward, blindly grasping for the wall. Goshiki is agonizingly pleading for the feel of solid wood under his fingers, when he meets it and cries out in relief.
He shakily fumbles around till he finds the door. His hand turns the knob as a voice goes off like a bomb behind him.
ā€œWAIT. YOU CAN’T GO YOU CAN’T LEAVE ME.ā€
It sounds nothing like you. But a sick, twisting and sinking notion hits him that it has to be. There is no one else and he knows this voice grating on his ears, making his hands slick with sweat, and eyes filling with tears from it has to be you.
The monster is you.
And Goshiki is going to piss himself.
He twists the handle in one jarring swing, and runs out of the dark, once quiet and peaceful room, that is now broken. A place that will forever haunt him.
He runs and runs, your voice following behind him. He doesn’t bother to take in his surroundings. There are more important things to focus on at the moment.
ā€œPLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GOshiki, goshiki don’t go don’t leave me sweetheart you can’t go you can’t you can’t you can’t you can’t I need you baby please! Don’t don’t don’t don’t don’t don’t don’t don’t don’t don’t don’t don’t don’t don’t don’t don’t don’t don’t don’t don’t don’t…..ā€
It takes a long time of running at Goshiki’s full speed before your voice fades, and it takes a lot longer than that for him to start to slow down. He’s afraid to stop. He’s scared to look behind him.
Even more than that, he’s scared he’s never going to look down at you again in a warm, safe bed. He loves you! He loves you so much! He doesn’t wanna cry anymore, and he doesn’t want to feel scared that you, his lovely perfect other half, is chasing behind him. A monster instead of his lover.
He can’t make sense of it! What he saw, and felt because of you. What was real and fake. If this is him going crazy even!
ā€œAgggghhhhhhhhrrrrrrgghhhhh!ā€ Goshiki can’t help his scream. He’s torn apart in a million different ways thanks to you. Thanks to whatever you were and are.
He’s sniffling, eyes burning with the effort to hold in the water threatening to break through, when he looks around him and his heart sinks further into despair.
It’s a deep red forest around him. And he’s not on the well trodden path.

My favourite part of reading about people starting to watch 9-1-1 is when they go "i know y'all said Buddie were like that but I didn't think they were like THAT".
Because no matter how unhinged we managed to make them sound, actually watching Buddie scenes happen in front of you in the show is absolutely batshit insane. It's truly a once-in-a lifetime-you-won't-believe-it-until-you-see-it kinda thing 😭
