Thinking hard about the orichalcos arc. The scene in dub with Atem going “IT SHOULDVE BEEN ME ITS NOT FAIR.” Was funny as hell but the jpn ver. Was… depressing. Atem yelling partner over and over and then screaming made me pity him so much. Like that was his host, the person who he has shared a body with since what feels like forever to him. Because that’s all he has ever known, Yugi. Imagine the comforting presence that is always by your side being replaced by silence. Like, do you think Atem ever tried calling for Yugi from the time they where apart? Hoping that he would respond in some way.
Orichalcos arc was a shit show but god do I love a codependent duo!!

Okay so! Finished the Orichalcos arc for the first time after 20-odd years, and honestly...it was really good?? The beginning was exposition-heavy, there were some established rules I feel they stretched a bit too much, there were some character backstories that I didn’t totally buy (I had a whole rant on Valon, geez), but overall...I mean, it was really good and it fit really nicely within the rest of established canon, at least as far as certain character moments.
For Atem in particular, this arc was great. It was so good for him to have doubts about his past, to think about who he was and why he came back at all. It tested his bond with Yuugi and allowed a little foreshadowing into exactly what he faced/will have to face as Pharaoh. The whole “vessel of memories” thing was peak. I cannot get enough of that.
It being anime-only, I can get why some people aren’t as keen on it, but also, like...it’s pretty well-aligned with the spirit of the series as a whole, at least as far as its themes go. I am so glad I finally got to finish this arc.
And, y’know, my precious boy Jou got to shine plenty, too, and I will never say no to that.

Atem and Yugi in separate bodies wouldn't even change much of their dynamic they already spent 3 years with no boundaries they'd just be clingy bitches still joint at the hip, sleeping in the same bed, bathing together, sharing food and drink, if one of em doesn't wanna talk they just push the other one in front [usually Yugi doing this bc he goes nonverbal more often], Atem definitely forgets he can't just walk through solid objects anymore so he keeps bruising his shins on the furniture, if you see one the other won't be far behind so it's actually more concerning if they don't show up as a pair, they probably have separation anxiety but this is the 90's and early 2000's so nobody is willing to talk about that therapy who haha we're so fine :)

fic rec! 6.7K DOMA arc fic.
Summary: When the pharaoh looked back on it, he never really understood quite how it happened. All he knew was that in one second, Yugi was there – and in the next, he was gone.
Comments: I'm just a sucker for Puzzleshipping angst, and that's at the center for all of this. It goes through most of the events of Season 4 once Yugi gets taken by the seal, all the way through the end.

no, but im that person who thinks raf deserves a redemption arc after all the shit he went through and i'd write a fucking essay about it. The amount of abuse that Raf went through because of Dartz. He will never forgive him for that, truly deep down he couldn't. This man literally he could never forget all the shit he was put through. Depends on if Dartz would actually make it up to him as his good self, Raf could never forget how much Dartz put him through mentally and physically. Killing his entire family? Yeah, he'll never forget or forgive that.

Orichalcos Gigas
Man... I hate this guy's weird, bone/bump mohawk he has going on. Regardless of what you think of the rest of this design, his head bumps are easily the weirdest part. He wasn't allowed to have a proper nose (only nose slits), so I guess they felt it necessary to put something on there (even if their choice was..... Extremely weird). I think the only other thing I have to say here really (aside from him looking like a pretty generic evil monster) is that his upper arm/shoulder area looks soooo painful. The way his muscles were drawn, especially on the right side, make it look like his arms are physically being twisted to look so skinny in that area. How can you even live with arms like that...

There's a scene in the Orichalcos arc where Weevil taunts Atem with a card he claims can save Yugi before ripping it in front of him and Atem loses his shit and proceeds to beat the fuck out of him by having his monsters attack him 7 times, and probably would've gone for more if Anzu hadn't stopped him
I've seen many theories saying that these 7 hits were for the 5 exodia cards Weevil threw off the ship with the last two hits being for the two cards Joey risked his life to save. But I call bullshit on that and propose this:
Amnesiac or not, numbers have a lot of importance in various mythologies and cultures worldwide. In Irish myth, you'll see a lot of 3's and 9's. In Egyptian lore one of the numbers most present is 7. In this moment of rage fuelled grief, I fully believe Atem instinctually regressed to his pharaoh days and was doling out a divine punishment on Weevil. If he had continued attacking, I think he would've capped off at 14 hits, the exact number of body parts that the god Seth cut Osiris into so he could be scattered all over Egypt - 7 body parts in upper Egypt and 7 more in lower Egypt
In this moment, Atem starts off as the grieving Isis desperately willing to do anything to bring her lover [Osiris] back from the dead but the second Weevil rips up the card, he becomes the angry Seth who cuts Osiris into pieces in the first place. Because if Anzu hadn't stopped him he may well have fallen to his own rage and the seal itself and never been able to get Yugi back as a result
Thank you for coming to my short essay on mythology symbolism and how it applies to Atem, the pharaoh of egypt himself *drops mic and walks off stage*

what tragic death would you suffer?
Tumblr media
the sacrifice
you die saving the thing you love. maybe it is family, friends, perhaps even a cause. they will carry your face with them for the rest of their lives, and every milestone they pass will make them think of you. it does not matter because you won't be there to experience it with them. years down the line, they will meet people who do not even know the weight of your name upon their skin. this is what your selflessness gets you in the end.
