Name: Lord Orland Percival O’Dell
Race: Lightfoot Halfling
Class: Rogue/Bard (Swashbuckler/College of Valor)
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Age: 60
Where: Mal Famaburg
His (shortened) title, as he would have you know it, is Bard of Great Renown, the Inimitable Indomitable Lord Orland Percival O’Dell the First of Mal Fama. But to his great annoyance, nobody ever refers to him this way unless he pays them to. Orland is one of the original members of Mal Fama, having set out over twenty years ago to find his fortune and provide for his very, very, very large family. He is pompous, petty, and loves to be the center of attention… but his friends have all acknowledged that age has mellowed him out quite a bit. He is the oldest member of Mal Fama (accounting for everyone’s relative lifespans), and he hates being reminded of the fact that he is rapidly approaching the end of middle age— not that many non-halflings can even tell. Vain to the last, it’s rumored that he casts illusion magic quite often to hide his greying hair. He also spends a good amount of time lamenting the loss of the fabulous mustache and goatee it took him decades to grow— lost on his last great adventure.
Despite his flaws, Orland is seen as a constant source of good morale around the city, as he has taken it upon himself to be the liaison to the citizens of Mal Famaburg, and he spends a good deal of his efforts entertaining them through his many artistic pursuits. He also has a reputation as a legendarily outrageous flirt, but it is well-known that he is unfailingly loyal (and obsessively devoted) to his wife Cornflower, to whom he has been married for over forty years— and whom he will tell anyone who listens is the most perfect creature ever dreamed up by the universe. Their thirteen children have all grown to be every bit as personality-filled, creative, clever, and adventurous as their parents. Orland is highly proud of his considerable progeny, but he’s been a bit more somber since they’ve all started their own lives and gone about adventuring. So he has delved headfirst into the exciting world of being a grandfather— and he’s a natural.
The stories of Mal Fama’s adventures have traveled far and wide because Orland made sure to spread them himself. As a result, it is well-known that he used to be quite a powerful bard with enviable magic at his disposal, but he lost it all in a deal with a fairy queen to save the life of his oldest son, Percy. Since then, he’s managed to scrape up a small amount of magic again… but he’s not nearly the showstopping spectacle he was when he was young. Since then, he’s focused far more on his swashbuckling skills, and he’s very proficient with a blade now. He doesn’t duel often nowadays, blade-wise or bard-wise, but he does enjoy a challenge if it’s offered to him. And he loves nothing more than putting on a good show— in every aspect of his life.

Happy National Cheese Lovers Day to all who celebrate
Below is a c. 1915 photo of the Orland Cheese and Butter factory in Orland, California. The image shows a creamery operated by the farmers of The Orland Project, which transformed the area’s soil.

What was The Orland Project? Expand for more details:
The Orland Project, in north-central California, is located about 100 miles north of Sacramento. The project incorporates parts of neighboring Glenn, Tehama and Colusa counties. The hub of the project, the town of Orland, is in northern Glenn County.
One of the smallest projects ever tackled by Reclamation, the project irrigates 1 percent of the Sacramento Valley’s total irrigable soil, 20,000 acres. The project, one of the oldest federal reclamation projects in the country and one of the first undertaken in California, was authorized by the Secretary of the Interior in October 1907 after a finding of feasibility by a board of engineers.
Water was delivered to the first farm units at the beginning of the 1910 growing season. The project is irrigated by Stony Creek, a tributary of the Sacramento River. Flowing northward, the creek gathers water drained from the surrounding slopes of the Coast Range Mountains. The collected water irrigates lands on both sides of the creek near the town of Orland.
The Orland Project comprises two main dams to store water, East Park and Stony Gorge, two diversion dams, almost 17 miles of canals, and 139 miles of laterals. Orland has some of the best conditions for agriculture. The growing season lingers over 262 days from March to November. The project’s soil is considered some of the richest and most productive in the nation. Orland, and the Sacramento Valley, is warmed by a thermal belt, with very few frosts. Average rainfall is 17.99 inches, most of which is measured between the first of November and the first of April. With hardly any snow, winter runoff occurs almost immediately after precipitation. The project has an average annual runoff of 410,000 acre feet.
