Ornette Coleman/Don Cherry/Jimmy Giuffre/Kenny Dorham – The Lenox Jazz School Concert: August 29, 1959
The Lenox School of Jazz was a summer program in Lenox, Massachusetts founded by John Lewis and held from 1957 to 1960. It was one of the first instances where the worlds greatest jazz musicians were enlisted as faculty and where jazz was taught to promising young musicians. This release presents the rare and long unavailable 1959 Lenox Annual Benefit Concert, featuring such stars as Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, Jimmy Giuffre, Kenny Dorham and Gary McFarland, among many others.
As a bonus, an extremely rare quartet set by Kenny Dorham, who was one of the mentors at the Lenox School.

Ornette Coleman - Change of the Century
A recommendation from a Lou Reed best album list I found on Twitter. I love Ornette, not sure why I haven't heard this one before.

After playing a show with my proggy indie-jam band back when I was 18 (~2010), some random guy that was in the audience came up to me and told me he liked the improvising and that we should really check out “The Shape of Jazz to Come” by Ornette Coleman. At the time I had heard some jazz, probably Brubeck & Kind of Blue, but honestly no jazz had really grabbed me yet. The Shape of Jazz to Come changed all that, eternally transforming my conception of music and freedom and jazz in so many ways, and for that I’m forever grateful. About 5 years later while my band was on a west coast tour, I picked up this early-ish reissue of that LP at a shop in Seattle, only to find out that day or the next that he had just passed away. The loss felt huge, more so than any musician I looked up to, maybe the death of Charlie Haden the previous year which hit me hard. Anyways, happy birthday Ornette, you were a gift to the world and music is forever changed because of your innovation and dedication to letting the spirit music guide you. . . . #ornettecoleman #freejazz #theshapeofjazztocome https://www.instagram.com/p/Ca5r_ruPfAc/?utm_medium=tumblr

Start Friday weird, noisy, and intense. #vinyloftheday is from the late, great #OrnetteColeman who thankfully I got to see live before his passing. #jazz #avantgarde (at SoFA District) https://www.instagram.com/p/CaH6Y9KJKgZ/?utm_medium=tumblr

For today’s #superfriendssunday , @karenvinylgirl asked us for a Snow Day pic. It looks very cold indeed in Sweden where Ornette is on this cover… We don’t get much snow in Houston, and you’ll see us all bundled up like this as soon as it hits about 40 degrees. But don’t laugh at us, northerners, because we can withstand highs hotter than the fires of hell itself. Check out the snowed-in Super Friends this week: @funkcroci @audio.phool @biomechalien @whisky_tattoos_vinyl @b.d.lindert @underground_cavement @mrcharlie65 @pangalacticart @yakido @gardenofpearl @honorablementionz @urmsonvinylfan @recordsinmybasement @jldrueke @herr.pojke @magistervinyl @gencynide @rexleetham @scottstessl @shawnspins @teddybvinyl @vinyl_terry @subhuman65 @tomvece @retro_rocker @staffroomrecords @karenvinylgirl #ornettecoleman #jazz #jazzvinyl #vinyl #vinyladay #lp #vinyloftheday #vinyligclub #vinyljunkie #vinylcommunity #vinylcollective #instavinyl #vinylgram #recordcollector #nowspinning https://www.instagram.com/p/CZEpsjdOV4M/?utm_medium=tumblr

"I don't really live like a musician myself. I think music is just something that I do, but I'd like to be doing lots of other things. I like to cure all kinds of illnesses." "I decided, if I'm going to be poor and black and all, the least thing I'm going to do is to try and find out who I am. I created everything about me." "To me, human existence exists on a multiple level, not just on a two-dimensional level, not just having to be identified with what you do and what you say." "I remember once I read a book on mental illness and there was a nurse that had gotten sick. Do you know what she died from? From worrying about the mental patients not being able to get their food. She became a mental patient." - Ornette Coleman (March 9, 1930 - June 11, 2015) Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for “Sound Grammar,” the first jazz work to be bestowed with the honor." #ornettecoleman #jazz (at Lumonics School of Light Art) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMOdrfTlamq/?igshid=13zf6lgnu2yky

Ornette Coleman – The Complete Science Fiction Sessions
The album includes all of the music that was originally issued on Science Fiction (Columbia, 1972) and Broken Shadows (Columbia, 1982), along with previously unreleased material.
In a review for AllMusic, Thom Jurek called the album “a stellar collection of Ornette-ology assembled in one place,” and wrote: “This is some of his very best material, archived and issued the way it should have been in the first place.”
