Footloose! is an album led by jazz pianist Paul Bley featuring tracks recorded in 1962 & 1963 and released on the Savoy label.

Allmusic described it as “one of Bley’s most enjoyable albums”. Rough Guide author Ian Carr calls the album “classic and highly influential” stating that the “quiet, focused intensity persists throughout.” Fellow pianist Keith Jarrett said he listened to the album “thousands of times.”

<Today’s CD> 돈 엘리스라 하면, 아방가르드나 프리 재즈쪽의 트럼펫터로 흔히 알려졌지만, 모던 빅밴드의 길을 열었던 빅밴드 리더로서의 위상이 엄청나다. 변박자를 구사한 현대 빅밴드의 편곡과 연주는 이후 수많은 빅밴드 편곡자들에게 크나큰 영향을 끼쳤다. 이 앨범은 빅밴드 연주는 아니지만, 진보적 재즈 음악인으로 대가를 이룬 폴 브레이, 스티브 스왈로우와 함께 드럼레스 트리오 연주를 들려준다. 세 사람의 연주라고 해서 아방가르드적 경향이 강할 것으로 예상되는 음반이지만, 전혀 예상을 뒤엎고 스탠더드 발라드를 중심으로 아름다운 연주를 피로한다. 물론 중간중간 인터플레이 가운데 그들의 전위적 연주 색채가 살짝 느껴지긴 하지만, 전반적으로 초심자에게도 듣기 편한 음반이라 생각된다. 이 CD는 1961년 녹음된 음원을 Candid에서 24비트 리매스터링하여 다지털화 시킨 것을 2001년 일본 킹레코드에서 재발매하였다. #music#jazz#trumpet#DonEllis#PaulBley#SteveSwallow#Candid#KingRecords#1961#2001(Edogawa-ku, Tokyo, Japan에서)

You know how there are certain foods - take the avocado, for instance - which have positive health benefits that are so simply powerful they have been known to catalyse the formation of cults? The same should be true about solo piano albums. As there is a growing number of avocado advocates whose life mission is to proselytise every single non-eater out there by exalting the wonders of that particular superfood, so should there be solo piano prophets doing the same about these superalbums. In addition to the improvement of a number of conversations, this would allow more people to understand just how good it is to listen to a piano player and his instrument in their most intimate, most anti-social setting. Being alone and unencumbered by foreign timbral and rhythmic impositions, a truly great pianist can dictate exactly the size of the sonic universe he wants to immerse the listener in. From Cecil Taylor’s thunderous jungles of atonality, to Thelonious Monk’s playgrounds of melody, great solo piano recordings have a deeply meditative aspect to them, demanding the listener to concentrate fully on every detail produced by the instrument whose vast range is at the pianist’s whim. The more you commit, as a listener, the more you’ll hear, and this is especially true of Paul Bley’s solo piano outings - 1973’s “Open ,To Love” being the most famous. Bley is a masterful user of space, bending it to his will among the selection of notes he is almost selfishly spare in presenting to his listener. What does come from his hands operating the piano’s keys (& strings) sounds hard edged, but carefully crafted. Somewhere between sensitivity and senselessness.
