Iggy Pop - Real Wild Child (Wild One) 1986
Johnny O'Keefe's song "Wild One" or "Real Wild Child" is an Australian rock and roll song written by Johnny Greenan, Johnny O'Keefe, and Dave Owens. The release date of the single, 5 July 1958, is considered the birth of Australian rock and roll. It was the first Australian rock recording to reach the national charts, peaking at number 20.
Iggy Pop covered the song on his seventh studio album, Blah-Blah-Blah (1986). The song was co-produced by David Bowie as well as having him on backing vocals. Titled "Real Wild Child (Wild One)", this became a number 10 hit on the UK Singles Chart in January 1987. In Canada it charted for 20 weeks despite never peaking higher than number 65 on the RPM Top Singles chart. It peaked at number 27 on the US Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart. In New Zealand the song reached number 1 in June 1987, becoming Pop's biggest hit there. The Iggy Pop version was featured in the film Problem Child and Problem Child 2, Crocodile Dundee II, and Five Nights at Freddy's, as well as the 2022 series Pam & Tommy. The song was recorded again in 2008 by Iggy Pop who teamed up with Aussie rockers Jet, titled "The Wild One". It was released as a tribute to Johnny O'Keefe and peaked at number 56 on the ARIA Singles Chart.
Other covers include Jerry Allison with Buddy Holly backing him on guitar, Jerry Lee Lewis, Status Quo, Everlife, The Runaways, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Brian Setzer, Lee Rocker, Teenage Head, Sarah Harding, and Wakefield. Christopher Otcasek's version appeared on the soundtrack to the film Pretty Woman. It was also covered by the fictional band Josie and the Pussycats in the 2001 film of the same name.
"Real Wild Child (Wild One)" received a total of 68,4% yes votes! Previous Iggy Pop polls: #199 "Lust for Life".

Richard Theodore Otcasek (born March 23, 1944), known as Ric Ocasek, was a singer, songwriter, musician, and producer. He is best known as the vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and songwriter for the band The Cars that he formed with his friend Benjamin Orr. The band had several hits from 1978-1988; Ocasek played guitar and sang lead vocals on most of them, and Orr played bass for the Cars. Ocasek released a solo album in 1982 that was a little more experimental than the Cars’ “new wave sound” he even played all the instruments on some of the tracks. The Cars disbanded in 1988. Ocasek made no public music until he released another solo album in 1990. He has also been a successful producer and has produced music for various artists over the past 20 years. The Cars reunited and recently released an album in 2011 and were inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2018. In April 2018, The Cars were inducted into The Rock and Roll of fame. Ocasek has also appeared in films and is a talented songwriter. Ocasek is one of the critical members of Power Pop and New Wave. His peers and fans admire Ocasek.

Breaking: Ric Ocasek of The Cars Has Passed Away (1944-2019)
Breaking: Ric Ocasek of The Cars Has Passed Away (1944-2019)

It was only a couple of days ago that we shared the news about the passing of Rock singer Eddie Money, and now we must add to the sadness and share the news about the passing of the great Ric Ocasek of the legendary New Wave Rock band The Cars. Reports cite that the NYPD was called to investigate an “unresponsive male” in his apartment by Paulina Poritzkova (his estranged wife). It would end up…

Classic rock rarity alert! Folk trio Milkwood was The Cars before they became The Cars. The songs on the band’s lone 1972 album, “How’s The Weather,” were written and sung by Richard Otcasek (AKA Ric Ocasek) and Benjamin Orzechowski (AKA Ben Orr), and there’s even some guest musician work by Greg Hawkes—on saxophones, not keyboards. The cover is beat up (and written on; thanks for that, Cheryl, wherever you are) and was subjected to one of the worst shipping packaging jobs I’ve ever seen (saran-wrapped, then taped to some flimsy cardboard folded over a few times), but it made it here in one piece.

The Cars “Shake It Up” 1981. I’m spinning The Cars’ fourth LP in honor of Ric Ocasek who died yesterday at age 75 (b. Richard Otcasek 1944, d. September 15th, 2019). Ocasek wrote almost all of the tracks on Shake It Up (he shares writing credits with Cars’ keyboardist Greg Hawkes on “This Could Be Love”) and was the lead vocalist on six of the nine tracks on the album. Those tracks include all of the US-released singles (Benjamin Orr sings lead on the UK-only single “Think It Over”): “Shake It Up” was the first single and became their first US Top 10 hit (#4 on Billboard’s Hot 100, also charting at #2 on the Top Tracks chart and #14 on the Disco Top 80 chart) and its B-side, “Cruiser” (sung by Orr) also charted, going to #37 on the Top Tracks chart. Other singles from Shake It Up included “Since You’re Gone” (#41 US, #37 UK) and “Victim of Love” (#39 on the US Mainstream Rock chart). Those singles are my favorite songs from Shake It Up - it’s a pretty decent album overall: I also like the non-single, Tubeway Army-ish track “A Dream Away” and the swirling, almost Cure-like post-punkish (never thought I’d compare The Cars and The Cure) “Maybe Baby,” but I’m not crazy about the ballad “I’m Not the One,” which is a somewhat sappy simplistic synth light pop track.
