Hapuriainen's animation, comics & games (and other) of 2023
Got the wrap up almost sort of out on time this year!
Anime: Frieren (cour 1), Re:Zero (season 1) Futari wa Precure Splash Star, Yes! Precure 5, Yes! Precure 5 GoGo, Smile Precure!, Mahou Tsukai Precure!, Hirogaru Sky! Precure, Otona Precure, Zettai Bouei Leviathan, Petite Princess Yucie, Tokyo Mew Mew New s2, Magical Destroyers
Did I legit not watch any other non-magical girl anime than Frieren and Re:Zero? I'll have to try harder this year. Overall 2023 was a very Precure year and I'm done with almost all of the seasons, only 3 left. But Frieren has been amazing, it looks so beautiful (and is certainly an improvement from the manga on this front), the music is great and of course I already liked the story. Re:Zero was compelling enough that I might watch the second season even if the isekai aspect really isn't for me. Emilia best girl.
As for Precure, usually I manage to watch one backlog season in addition to the airing one, but this time I surprised myself and did five. Which may not have been smart since it was kind of a chore at some points, but I wanted to prepare for the Otona sequel (which turned out to be a disappointment). The 2023 season Hirogaru was one of the better ones thanks to the excellent heroine.
Manga: Are You Alice, Saint Tail, Stellar Witch LIPS, Zelda manga (Oracle of Ages/Seasons, Ocarina of Time, Four Swords)
On the manga front there wasn't much of note, the ongoing series from previous years (OP, MHA, Undead Unluck, Spy x Family, Frieren, Witch Hat Atelier…) continue and I don't have a lot to say about them, except that my interest in One Piece is still very low even if we finally got out of Wano.
I did manage to finish Are You Alice after it being on hold for years, so that's something at least. It has absolutely lovely art and I like the concept, but it did get kind of complicated at times. And I wish we had seen more Alices.
Movies: Super Mario movie, Puss in Boots 2, The Bad Guys, Strange World, the Boy and the Heron, Barbie, various Precure movies
Barbie enters the scene as one of the few live action anything and it was great. The message didn't really speak to me personally but it has an amazing aesthetic, fun story and something to say. And like everyone else has already said, I agree that Puss in Boots 2 was great on all fronts and The Bad Guys was a lot of fun too.
Comics & novels: W.i.t.c.h. reboot, Null Magical Girl, Smile Precure! novel, Magia Record scene 0
The W.i.t.c.h. reboot came out of nowhere and landed with a thud, I was willing to give it a chance but the story just wasn't that interesting. Not sure how I would rate it if it didn't have the comparison against a childhood favourite.
Games: Zelda 1, Zelda Oracle of Ages & Seasons, Ocarina of Time, Tears of the Kingdom, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond, Pokemon Arceus (or half of it), Usagi Shima
From the anime side 2023 was a very Precure year, but on the game side it was an extremely Zelda year. Or it started as a Pokemon year with Brilliant Diamond, which was not enjoyable, and continued with Arceus, which has been the best Pokemon game I've played. Haven't cleared it yet though since I got this sudden need to play Zelda, and I didn't want to rush it. But I'm looking forward to finishing it.
On the Zelda front Tears of the Kingdom was just as great as I hoped, and it effectively monopolised my summer. But as much as I like botw Link, I'm ready for a new Hyrule. As for the older loz games, the OG game was too retro for me, but I really liked Oracle of Ages. Seasons had fun gameplay but the story was very nothing.
Then there was Usagi Shima which was cute for about 2 weeks but once I completed the bun book there wasn't really anything left to do. But it was fun for what it is.
Best work: Tears of the Kingdom
Best music: Frieren (A Powerful Mage)
Best visuals: Barbie looked amazing, especially for a live-action movie. Frieren on the anime side. As for manga, Are You Alice
Best character design: Cure Sky
Best OP: Hirogaru Sky Precure for the song, Frieren for visuals
Best ED: Frieren also
Biggest WTF: the sequel to a goddamn Shrek spin-off being so much better than it had any business being. Also the entirety of Null Magical Girl.
Best Girl: Frieren
Best Boy: Botw Link again I guess, I spend a lot of time thinking about him
Best Side Girl: I dunno, Ha-chan (Mahou Tsukai Precure)? She is just so cute.
Best Side Boy: Rauru (the goat one not the owl guy), he got a compelling story that lets us see him displaying many different emotions and he has such a pleasant voice. I'm not a furry but…
Worst Girl: Nozomi (Yes! Precure 5 & GoGo, she was ok in Otona though)
Worst Boy: I don't think there's enough works with a notable male main character this year and I don't remember hating any of them. I guess I didn't particularly like Subaru (re:Zero) but he wasn't like, the worst.
Worst Side Girl: Ellee-chan (Hirogaru Sky! Precure), baby characters just really don't work for me
Worst Side Boy: I don't really like the friendly rivals in Pokemon, so Barry.
Best romance: I continue to ship Link and Zelda (botw/totk)
Best non-romantic relationship: The fact that botw Link isn't alone any more and has friends who are happy to see him and fight with him
Worst romance: Main girl x main guy from Stellar Witch Lips, they barely had any scenes together
Worst non-romantic relationship: the group dynamics in the W.i.t.c.h. reboot didn't work nearly as well as in the original.
Plans for 2024:
Tiger & Bunny and Spy x Family part 2
Wonderful Precure!
Starting three backlog Precure I haven't seen yet with Heartcatch
Maybe it'll be Evangelion's year this time?
Ghost Trick is currently downloading on my Switch since it was on sale
More Zelda in general
Case Study of Vanitas started getting published here so I'll probably catch up on that

Slowly curating a collection of fashion and art books to have as references and reading materials, but trying to figure out where to put it all. Right now it's on the bookshelves in the bedroom, but I kind of want them somewhere closer to my desk where people can see and pick through them when they come over to the house.
Especially the GLB collection once I've finished getting the rest, because that's a bit of a grail right now. I've been kind of haphazardly doing this for years, but decided last year during the sewing room revamp that I want to make a concerted effort to really showcase my interests more openly.
These recent thoughts were prompted by getting more GLBs (I have 36 of the total run of 60, though pre-vol. 40 the order is messy as hell) and Lapin Labyrinthe volumes (I now have 2, 5 and 6; need to find 1 somewhere secondhand and get 3 and 4 next order), but also finding a book of fashion illustrations by @meganhess at Kmart last night for $6 randomly, and buying several more of her works online when I got home to add to said shelf.
I'm gonna ramble a bit here ...
Anyway, goals:
I want to finish my GLB collection, which is getting harder as prices are increasing and finding volumes in good shape gets harder. This will just have to be a slow-and-steady situation, I think
I want to continue my Lapin Labyrinthe collecting because they feel like a good successor to the GLB, with more focus on international community engagement. They're early in their run, so it shouldn't be too hard to keep up
I kind of want to look into the Otona Alice Walk's zines, though a few friends have warned me away due to drama with the organisers (the zines and the group look interesting, though one volume copped a lot of flack from western lolitas online for putting Misako and another model (I cannot remember who, sorry) in heart-shaped sunnies to pose with lollipops and a copy of Nabokov's Lolita)
Possibly start tracking down the back issues of Otome no Sewing. I don't use them as much as I used to, but I do still reference their techniques and patterns sometimes. My one hesitation here is that some of the earlier volumes now sell for ridiculous amounts whether they're in good shape or not
MORE ART BOOKS! I recently got a Louise Bourgeois retrospective that is chockablock of amazing photographs and information about her. I've also picked up several other smaller art books in the last year on several subjects, including ukiyo-e, the art of Catholocism and Paganism, and so on. I'd love to get some more books about the influence of religion and mysticism on art as a whole (there's a gorgeous Tarot collection at my local small bookshop that I want to pick up, for example; also a volume analysing the depictions of Hell in Japanese artwork that I kind of want)
MORE FASHION BOOKS! I have started picking up any neat and well-produced fashion-based illustration and photography collections I come across recently, but I'd like a few more scholarly ones. I need to get my hands on the Fashionpedia from Fashionary to go with my Textilepedia, for example. There's also several very cool books from a publisher I like that documented the Red Carpet for the Oscars throughout its history in a huge, scholarly text. I also need to organise my current collection of pattern drafting and technique/textbooks somehow. They used to live in the sewing room, but that isn't always helpful when I draft digitally

(I wrote a little something after seeing the promo for Otona Precure...)
(The idea of seeing Pretty Cure being allowed to age got me in a writing mood. Please enjoy)
The Tuesday of Our Dreams
[TXT-Dreaming Girl] Can you pick me up from work today? My car is in the shop.
[TXT-Superstar] Gladly. Welcome back, by the way.
[TXT-Dreaming Girl] Thanks. Dinner’s on me.
Yumehara Nozomi smiled as she looked over those texts in the parking lot for the studio. After several months on an international press junket, her good friend Kasugano Urara had returned to her home studio for a few months.
Nozomi checked in with the security guard and walked towards the waiting room behind the stage. The red light was still on, so she brushed a strand of pink hair from her eyes and looked around the room.
An older gentleman practicing lines for his next scene. A young girl and her mother, working through some vocal warmups, Kisaragi Gentaro, a grandmother who…wait, go back one.
The sound that came from Nozomi’s lips was an undignified squeak and Gentaro recognized it immediately.
“I was wondering when you were going to spot me here, Nozomi!” Gentaro stood and gave his friend and fellow teacher his friendship handshake. Nozomi immediately followed this up with a tight hug.
“Sorry, Gen. Sometimes tunnel vision kicks in, especially after a day in the classroom. You know how that is!” Nozomi pulled Gentaro away from the stage door.
“I sure do. But you’re forgiven, Nozomi. Man, what’s it been?” Gentaro laughed.
“About five months. I haven’t seen you since the big event at Alice’s place.” Nozomi recalled how Gentaro had left from a side door and had always wondered what had caused that reaction.
“Yeah, that one was on me.” Gentaro let out a breath that sent a ripple through his hair. “Do you want to know why that happened?”
“I guess, if you’re willing to tell me.” Nozomi rested a hand on his shoulder, though she had to reach up quite a ways to do it.
“One of the wealthy people at Alice’s party made a comment about how teachers would never be on their level…” Gentaro began.
“Well, I mean we know…but hey!” Nozomi interjected.
“Exactly. But it didn’t stop there. Everything he said just made my blood boil and I finally just pulled Sebastian aside and asked for a quick exit. I apologized to Alice the next day, but I just didn’t want to risk running into other rich people with a similar attitude.” Gentaro admits. “I mean, that means I missed out on quite a few parties at the Yotsuba Manor.”
“They were a lot less interesting without you, Gen.” Nozomi tapped him on the shoulder playfully. “So, what are you doing here?”
“One of my students is an extra for a scene today and I’m supposed to bring her home today.” Gentaro took a cup of water from the fountain and offered it to Nozomi, who just shook her head.
“That’s a nice thing to do. But is there anyone else who can bring her home? Why you?” Nozomi questioned.
“My student is the daughter of alien ambassadors, and she’s been targeted by a group of ‘Humans First’ terrorists who style themselves after knights.” Gentaro deadpanned.
Nozomi blinked once, then again. “I don’t know what’s worse. That you can say something like that with a straight face, or that I believe you without hesitation.”
Gentaro shook his head. “It’s not even in the top twenty weirdest things that has ever happened in our lives, and we both know it.”
“Right, Of course. There’s nothing normal in our field of work. There’s only ‘weird’,
really weird’ and ‘Tuesday.’”
“And Tuesdays are just the worst” They said together, sharing a years-long inside joke.
“So, does Urara know you’re here? She’s going to be super excited to see you, Gen.” Nozomi asked, finally taking the offered water.
“No, I figured that would be a surprise for her…” Gentaro looked up as the red light went off. “Lead her around the corner, please?” Gentaro moved about thirty feet down the hall, leaving Nozomi to watch as Urara exited the stage, with a dark-skinned girl following her.
“I didn’t realize it would require that many takes.” Gentaro’s Student Kilena said.
“There were a lot of moving parts, to be sure. Our actress had to hit just the right point on the stage, and stumble in just the right way to throw the cake up in the air. Then the cameras needed to be set up for a shot where it could record everyone’s reaction, especially yours. I have to say, looking at the final shot, your face was the most genuine.” Urara said with a grin as she spotted Nozomi.
“That’s just because I was thinking about the poor craft services baker who had to make seven cakes just to watch them get ruined.” Kilena said as she looked around. Was her teacher here yet? He said he would be.
“Nozomi! Meet Kilena Akralis. She’s one of our extras today and she did a wonderful job.” Urara gently pushed the young girl forward.
“Yumehara-sensei!” Kilena said with a grin. “Sorry, Kasugano-san, but we’ve already met. She’s been a substitute teacher at my school when my Sensei is ill.”
“Hey, kiddo! You’re well on your way. First an extra role, then you’ll be doing commercials for toothpaste. Then, the big time.” Nozomi teased her part-time student. “Ready to go, Urara?”
“Yes, lead the way, Nozomi.” The two ladies turned the corner, and Urara finally saw that all too familiar pompadour. If Nozomi’s reaction had been a squeak, Urara’s was a prolonged “EEEE” altered only by the Doppler Effect as she ran up to give him a humongous hug.
“Good to see you too, Urara.” Gentaro gently disengaged. “I’m here to take my student home, but I’d be happy to spend some time with you after that.”
“Oh absolutely! We have so much to catch up on, Gen-chan! We’ll see you at the…” Urara looked to Nozomi for confirmation.
“Bistro La Salle.” Nozomi answered.
“Great. Let me get Kilena back and I’ll see you there.” They traveled together down the hall a bit longer until they reached the parking lot. However, before Gentaro could even put a helmet on Kilena, all four of them got that sense that something bad was about to happen.
“Is this a bad time?” The “Knight” said as he charged up his laser spear. “Give up the alien and I’ll let the rest of you leave.”
“Nah.” Gentaro, Urara and Nozomi all said at the same time. No words wasted on a single foe.
“Your organization sent one knight to kill me.” Kilena stood tall in the midst of her teachers and heroes. “They should have sent more.”
A belt extended around Gentaro’s waist. A rocket charm was pulled from Kilena’s necklace and a pair of magical cellphones appeared.
“3..2..1..Henshin!”
“Pretty Cure, Blast Off!”
“Pretty Cure Metamorphose!”
The enemy knight was defeated exceedingly quickly, running with his armor in tatters. The two senior Pretty Cure looked at their junior.
“Were you casting around the same cosmic energy as Fourze, Cure Nova?” Cure Lemonade asked.
“As far as I can tell. We’ve never really measured it though.” Cure Nova smiled.
“If it is the same energy, it certainly chose a worthy host.” Cure Dream patted Cure Nova’s head
“Of course, this had to happen on a Tuesday.” Cure Lemonade sighed and all three adult heroes chimed in “Tuesdays are just the worst.”
“Tuesdays, huh? Strange. In my circle, it’s the Thursdays that we just can’t get the hang of.” Cure Nova laughed as she canceled her transformation. “Let’s get me back before my parents start to worry, Kisaragi-Sensei.”
“Sure thing, Kilena. Ladies, I’ll see you at the Bistro La Salle in about thirty minutes.” Gentaro gave his student a helmet and Nozomi and Urara a small salute,
Urara looked at Nozomi as Gentaro left. “I think we can afford to take the long way around to Bistro La Salle, can’t we?”
Nozomi smiled. “Of course. Better we all get a table at the same time. How about we surprise him? I can get Rin down there to meet him at least.”
“That works for me, Nozomi. I’ll contact Karen and Komachi as well.”

Autumn 2018 Anime Season
Well. Season’s already started in some ways with some pre-eps already out. But first….
Summer was overall blah it seems - I had 7 shows score an average of 8 or above in spring, this season was poor by comparison.
Season Ranking
1. Harukana Receive (8.42)
2. Shingeki no Kyojin S3 (8.20)
3, Major 2nd (8.04)
4. Hataraku Saibou (7.77)
5. Banana Fish (7.75)
6. Yama no Susume S3 (7.54)

8. Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi (7.27)
9. Chio-chan no Tsugakuro (7.25)
10. Kyoto Teramachi Sanjo no Holmes (6.92)
Kyojin ranks higher than expected cos it only managed to air 10 episodes after the typhoon put paid to this week’s airing (along with Tsukumogami)
Total shows completed: 17
To finish: 2 (Muhyo & Roji, Tsukumogami Kashimasu)
Shows still ongoing: 3
As for autumn:

Eh, not really interested: Bakutsuri Bar Hunter, SSS.Gridman, Kishuku Gakko no Juliet, Radiant, Ulysses, Hinomaru Zumo, Anima Yell!, Merc Storia, Himote House, Hashiri Tsuzukete Yokattatte [10]
Sequel/genre hell: Soten no Ken S2, Quan Yuan Sword (Chinese), Kitsune no Koe (China), Hora Mimi ga Mieteru yo (China), Tokyo Ghoul;re S2, Index III, Fairy Tail Finale, Jojo, Gyakuten Saiban 2, Senran Kagura Shinovi, Gurazeni S2, Inazuma Eleven Orion no Kokuin, Imas SideM Wakeatte Mini
Over my dead body: Ore no Suki blah Imoto blah, Dakaretai Otoko, Devidol
Leftovers: Kyojin S3, Banana Fish, Emiya-san [3]
Looks like a pleasingly sedate season than the normal autumn, great for me ‘cos I’ve got a couple of trips coming up plus it’s Christmas (but something always gets in the way every season, doesn’t it?)

[Kanji/Romaji/English Lyrics] Tsukiuta. 3th Season Vol.4 Momosaki Hina - Freesia
Singer: Momosaki Hina (CV. Ookubo Rumi)
Lyricist & composer: Yuuyu
[Kanji]

[English]
A dawn that I could say “Good morning” again, has naturally become so dearly
Little bird and cat send a signal of departure to where you are
A bud’s breath goes beyond rain and wind
To become an adult
Looking for the track of Freesia
I am always myself, I want to show it
Even the time when I wake up from the dream of Alice
But then you are by beside me, our eyes meet
I hope that we could laugh it off
Good night to today. I have worked real hard for the whole day.
Everything is changing. I search for a thing that doesn’t change in it.
Even if it’s different from the ideal, even if it becomes vitural
You will remember it, right?
Tracing Freesia’s flower petals
You are always yourself, just decorate them up
Even Alice is just a mischief dream
Such a trivial thing is
Changing my little world
Let’s repaint the dark future
We hold hands as we make a firm vow
Right now, there is nothing to be scared about
I’m surrounded by my dear friends
Let’s continue to bloom proudly even in the future
Under the moon
Looking for the track of Freesia
I am always myself, I want to show it
Even the time when I wake up from the dream of Alice
But then you are by beside me, our eyes meet
I hope that we could laugh it off

DLsite said his name alias is read as Koutei
R18 drama cd wiki said it is read as Sumeragi Mikado
(technically both is the same, just different in how you read them)
...who the fuck am I suppose to trust now????
I haven’t found any of his one-shot cds with him ending with saying his name to conclude this. not in Madoromi no Alice. not in Novelist no Hakuai itan.
(I’m scared to listen to Otona Kareshi bc it was tagged under yandere)
other unrelated topic;
I really want to get his 1 WEEK LOVER bc it was on sale but I’m not sure if I’m ready to hear the girl’s voice too (I might be too distracted lol)

English translation:
Floating aimlessly and about to be consumed inside a dream,
I want to doze off; I'm prepared and ready at any time
Relax yourself
Kiss Kiss Dreamin'night.
Looks like it'll overflow
If I couldn't melt with you even more
Kiss Kiss Dreamin'night.
Looks like it's spilling out
For sure, the finishing touch is warm milk
In my slumber, I'm swimming in Milk tea.
This sweet, sweet, just a bit adult-like Feeling
Now, if you close your eyes
Kiss Kiss Dreamin'night.
Looks like it'll overflow
If I couldn't melt with you even more
Kiss Kiss Dreamin'night.
Looks like it's spilling out
For sure, the finishing touch is warm milk

Intro to Ouji
Ouji is a Japanese fashion style that is typically thought of as the masculine counterpart of lolita fashion. Ouji is not a sub-style of lolita, but a fully-fledged fashion in its own right. It would be more accurate to think of ouji as the brother-style of lolita fashion, or the “prince” to lolita’s “princess,” since “ouji” is the Japanese word for “prince.”
The elements of a typical ouji outfit are: pants, a blouse, a jacket/vest, socks, shoes, and optionally a hat. When putting together an ouji coordinate, these pieces should be combined to create a look that is boyish yet elegant. Despite being a “masculine” fashion, this style can be worn by anyone, regardless of gender.
Ouji can be worn in a variety of substyles and themes. It’s three main substyles are the same as lolita’s: sweet, classic, and gothic. However, the substyles in this fashion are not nearly as well-defined, and there is significantly more overlap between styles. Additionally, color is much less important when determining which sub-style an ouji coordinate falls into, since black is quite common across them all. Instead the cut/shape of each garment, and the overall styling of the coordinate typically determine which category it falls into. Sweet ouji has a cute, frilly look, classic is more refined and elegant, and gothic has an overall darker look, usually featuring sharp, crisp lines. A number of other sub-styles, such as punk, exist but are much less common. When trying to determine which substyle a coordinate falls into, keep in mind that black is not automatically gothic, and sweet does not have to be pastel.
Sweet Ouji:
Classic Ouji:
Gothic Ouji:
Common themes include pirate, military, school, and royalty.
Many well-known lolita brands also carry ouji items. Alice and the Pirates, Atelier Boz, and Metamorphose temps de fille are among the most popular. Even Angelic Pretty has been known to carry ouji items in the past. Many Taobao brands, and several western indie brands create ouji pieces as well.
Finally, while you may occasionally hear ouji fashion referred to as “kodonna,” please note that this term is not correct. “Kodonna” is a combination of the Japanese words for “child” (kodomo) and “adult” (otona), and was once used by a member of the visual kei band, The Plastic Trees, to describe his personal style in an interview with a Japanese magazine. When this interview made its way to the west, a number of people were confused by his comments and believed he was referring to ouji. The fashion style has never been referred to as “kodonna” in Japan, and these days, the term is disliked by most who participate in the fashion.
