I just want to write my story
This is about how I came across MordeTwi and how it became one of my obsessions. It's kinda funny to look back to because I never really cared about Regular Show back then and I was one of those people who avoided MLP like it was the plague.
The first time I encountered a redraw of the Airplanes meme was actually in the year 2020, when I was browsing the Comics & Cartoons board of 4chan.
Tumblr media
It was a "Barney Bait" thread, this was the thread's thumbnail. I had no strong reaction to this image, nor thought to figure out the context for its creation. I wasn't fully aware about the ship yet at this point, I just assumed this image was a commission and not part of a greater cultural phenomenon. Okay, I'll admit: this was also during the time I was in a phase where I irrationally hate Regular Show and what it stands for (I believe the Simp meme was popular at this point too), and when I looked at this image then, I swear I was like "Heh. Mordecai is being partnered up with some random pony." (I didn't know at the time that Twilight is also a main protagonist like he is lol)
Jump forward to more or less a year later, I was binge watching Jabroni Mike's stream VODs. One video in particular has Frederick Knudsen as a guest, and it was about AI generated images (this was back when Dall-E wasn't a thing yet, I think). One of the prompts was the lyrics of Airplanes, and at some point Fred had to bring up MordeTwi because Mike had no idea what's going on. That one fateful second... Fred shared the original Airplanes drawing (Mike showing it to us thru OBS), and that's when it hit me...
"Hey, this image looks familiar. Hmm... A meme. And it involves Mordecai and MLP..."
I had to pause the video but it only took me seconds to remember that 4chan thread. This was also the first time I learned of the pony's name – Twilight Sparkle. "Ah. I know my search term now, thanks Fred!"
Google: mordecai x twilight sparkle
This was when the Airplanes meme was still just about to blow up into mainstream popularity (re: resurge as a trend big time). Searching MordeTwi during this time was better since you got to see more of the older stuff that wasn't to do with the redraw trend or the Airplanes meme in general. At the same time I was deep diving in this search, I was also looking at my browser history trying to rediscover that 4chan thread to make sure I wasn't going crazy (actually, I had to look it up through an archive, e.g. Desu Archive).
I learned a few things that day:
Tumblr media
1, Mordecai x Twilight Sparkle was a thing for a long time
2, the ship itself did not stem from the original meme image – which there's a trend over it – but alot of people don't seem to know that
3, there was a trend back in 2020 to "redraw MordeTwi"
4, there was an ongoing trend to make content related to: A, the ship, or B, the meme based on the ship.
Tumblr media
There's just something about this pairing, it just... stuck to my head. Like, it's some kind of cosmic horror – they're bound together one way or another, their pairing is inevitable, and your mind just won't quiet about it. But there's something else I learned about MordeTwi in those early times: the original shippers of this pairing were kind of the underdogs. This was a full on fanbase too, I must add, with a fan club. Just a few days in for their existence and they were already getting hate sent their way; they were misunderstood – though granted, they didn't have a FAQ section to clear things up, until two years after their club was founded.
Suffice it to say: learning about this ship – how its' fans/creators got treated over time, and how it was perceived overall... that got me rooting for MordeTwi. It's a pity that MordeTwi is mostly seen these as "that fake ship/joke pairing that a nine-year-old made up out of nowhere".

Okay, I was gonna leave this in the tags but I want this to be a bit more out there for a few reasons, and also I want to talk more at length, so here I go!
This is super cool and I LOVE how people are interpreting Genloss. As a bystander, watching it all from afar, it’s really cool. This post is really cool and reminded me of something. Putting a read more cuz this is gonna be VERY long and I’m sorry
If you like streamers exploring themes of their streaming career and how it effects them, I want to introduce you to Red Vox!
Red Vox is Vinesauce Vinny’s band, with fellow streamer Jabroni Mike and their two, non-streamer friends, Joe and Bill. Vinny writes the lyrics and for the most part, he’s the front man and the main guy of the band.
With Vinny’s lyrics, he doesn’t like to talk about what they mean since he likes to leave them up to interpretation and keep it vague since the lyrics could be personal or just plain hard to explain. He also has stated that he likes to not talk about the meaning of his lyrics cuz sometimes songs have more than one meaning and he doesn’t want HIS interpretation to be the definitive version just cuz it’s his version. He wants to see how people interpret his songs and his lyrics and he likes seeing what people think.
That being said, It is my belief, at least, that a very small portion of his songs can be interpreted as being about his streaming career. Allow me to briefly go over why:
Envy (Not actually Red Vox, it’s a solo song from Vinny, but I want to bring attention to this one anyway cuz it’s a good one): This song, to me, is from the perspective of a hater, talking about a streamer, or, more generally, someone famous. The song talks about how this person thinks they could do better and that the famous person got lucky and that they’re untalented and that it should’ve been them.
Of course, with it being open to interpretation, it can be about a teacher, a famous person, a bully, what have you. Hell, it could simply be about a jealous person, but considering Vinny’s background, I do think he was at least semi-inspired by hate comments that he gets. “I see the person you claim to be (You don’t deserve it), if I was lucky as you, so happy that I could be,”
Hungry Ghost: There’s a very good analysis of this song in the comments on the official upload of it by one Brody Welch, but let me summarize. In the interpretation of this song, it can be about the toll that streaming has on someone’s mental health and how having a fan base makes it even worse.
And of course, this doesn’t have to be about Vinny or even streamers, but some lyrics make it seem like so when you consider it in the context of it being about Vinny. I don’t want to do a huge analysis since Brody Welch already did such a good job but as a send off, here’s a lyrical excerpt. “At the top there’s only one way down, there’s one way down, there’s one way down, at the top you’ve got a bigger mouth to feed,”
Reeling from the Rafters: This one is probably a bit more of a stretch but I think it still has weight to the idea of it being about streaming. There isn’t a huge analysis on this one like there is for Hungry Ghost, but if you look at the lyrics while thinking about Vinny’s streaming career, it’s not hard to visualize it.
In short, this song can be interpreted as the struggle to become someone online and be an Internet personality with a following. It’s a lot more vague than the others and of course, I’ll say it again, could be about something else or maybe it’s meant to be about nothing in particular. We’ll probably never know and that’s why these interpretations exist. “They got you reeling from the rafters, until you feel it in your heart, but there’s no pleasing the new masters, outside of living in the dark,”
Now, I’m not trying to say that these are the definitive meanings of these songs or that they were Vinny’s intention when writing the lyrics or anything like that. As I said, he purposely doesn’t talk about the meaning of his songs cuz he likes to let people interpret them and that’s all this is. It’s interpretation. That being said, I hope I’ve made compelling arguments and convinced at least one person to want to check out the Red Vox songs to see these similar themes explored.
Hey, maybe someone will discover Red Vox through this and find that they like their music.
Either way, whatever anyone does with this info, I hope I could at least tell you about more media (even if it’s just three songs) that explores similar themes as Genloss, even if you don’t go seeking it out :)
it’s so bonkers to me that generation loss’s commentary is regarding the toxicity surrounding streaming and the “show must go on” mentality and doing anything for viewers when you have the meta-context that during the first episode ranboo was getting actively injured by a malfunctioning wire, but continued on anyway

Somebody who has video editing skills and enough time should make an extensive compilation of Mike’s little giggle thing he does. It belongs in a museum.
