"I love The Blue Nile. Have you ever heard that band? No? Everyone says that to me. Everyone says they've never heard of them. Band from the late '80s called The Blue Nile. The leader singer, the frontman, was a guy... is a guy called Paul Buchanan and it was actually funny how I heard of them a couple years ago. Jessie Ware came over to me. I went to see her live and she came over to me and said, 'I love your band. You love The Blue Nile, don't you?' And I was like, 'No, I don't know what you're talking about'. And she was referencing the fact that what she believed was all of my melodic influences came from that band and I thought that was very strange, and I listened to it. Anyway, two years later, I'm obsessed with The Blue Nile. There's an album called 'Hats' by The Blue Nile. And I think it's... it's one of the best albums of all time. Just in the way that it works and how theatrical it is, and how beautiful it is, and... you can hear so much of The 1975 on that album. So, I'd say that album, at the moment, is a very... is a massive influence on us. Massive."

Episode 14 made me incredibly sad that my judging ot3 is no more, booooo, but it also cemented how much this whole thing is rigged, so I’m here for it. I mean, it’s pretty obvious both from the edit itself and from the connections behind the contestants getting through to the live shows, but that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy the primo Louis content and the general garbage I’m here for! This recap is dedicated to @newleafover and @justlarried in particular and to anyone else who finds it all as entertaining as I do, too. I promise, they’ll be shorter after this!
Louis’s been told who to put through (Brendan), and he’ll do it (of course he will, he’s a pro), but I’d bet solid $$ he’s also doing whatever he can to help the ones he had to boot (J SOL) on the DL.
We pick up where we left off last night, with rosy-cheeked Brendan. "I'm excited about this," whispers Liam before Brendan starts. ORLY? Not me, I’m increasingly annoyed by him, lmao. Nile’s face as this performance goes on gives me life because it more or less telegraphs, “This kid? This one's the one Simon wants to win this bullshit? Alrighty then.”
Me as Liam midway through this performance (his commentary at the end of it = “Really great, really great”):
Tumblr media
Everything about this show is heavily, ham-fistedly edited, and I have to believe some of these facial expressions are copied/pasted from other performances because you literally cannot bop your head to the slowest version ever of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” Liam.
Anyway, when it’s over, Nile announces, “That song was written by a dear friend,” and god, it only reminds me of just how many people he’s worked with, the career he’s had. I can only pray that all three of them had incredibly deep conversations throughout the rest of the night, sigh.
Will I ever tire of Dermot looking vaguely hot and telling us super obvious shit, like, “Now comes the hard part, where Louis, Nile, and Liam have to decide which four go through to the live shows.” (spoiler: no):
Tumblr media
Will I ever tire of Louis and Liam low-key bickering and talking over each other about trivial things? (spoiler: hellz no):
Tumblr media
Nile says, “I'll have to be honest with you, man, I wouldn't want to be in your shoes,” and I laff and laff because I read it on at least three levels.
CAN I DIE NOW because Louis is seemingly the only judge who hangs out with Dermot (related: someone buy these blue-eyed British boys some shades, and Dermot some sunscreen):
Tumblr media
This is a farce, but Louis is ethereal, holy shit, he’s so emotional, so connected to all of these boys and what this ultimately means to them. Dalton is in (yay!), Thomas is out (boo, and boy, is he beet-red from both the sun and emotions), Armstrong is in, J Sol is out (BOO), Anthony is in (meh), and Brendan is in (MEH).
The best part of the chat with Brendan was Louis fairly emotionlessly saying, “I thought long and hard about this decision,” lmaooooooo. The other best part is that Brendan is the only one we see talking to his family about this shockingly great news, thanks, editors--got it!
Shitty editing means that the feedback overlaps among the boys, so you can't tell who Louis’s talking to or about, but on the plus side, lots of coodles with thumbs planted firmly in shoulders, no matter if the person is in or out. I also love hearing his “hahahahahaha,” and the occasional "loads of love" complete with Harry Styles-style bow.
After Mark Wahlberg’s British cousin Anthony is in, we get a lot of tears (and WOW, does Louis look like his mum in this whole segment :-\ ), a spot-on Anthony impression, Anthony kissing his neck, and something you won’t see on various other blogs, ahem:
Tumblr media
Godspeed, Liam, sobbbbb, I miss you and your eyebrows and your gold watch so goddamned much:
Tumblr media
We head back to Ayda/Robbie’s house for the overs, and I’ll keep this short because I really, REALLY do not care. Except to say I bet Ayda wishes Liam’s album had been released in time for this fancy pool party (in which nobody swims because it’s literally designed for children):
Tumblr media
Ayda’s group does yoga outside because of course they do, and it’s meant to be wacky, loony fun based on the shitty music/edit, but it’s more pointless than anything else. I soothe myself during all of this by thinking about that pool, sigh:
Tumblr media
The guest judges are Leona Lewis and Adam Lambert, who are both beautiful (Adam especially) and about ten thousand times more helpful than David Walliams, I mean, these two at least have lived it. And speaking of David, I’m still not over the entire leather daddy thing last night at Robbie’s house, and how it seemed to be played off as a joke? Was that a fever dream? Who else saw that and wants to explain it to me??
Anyway, back to Ayda, and I’m bored thinking about the overs, so here’s a real brief rundown: Janice and Ola were both outstanding; Ricky and Louise were both boring; Gio is ~not my fave, he looks like carrot top cosplaying Harry Styles, and I keep hearing Louis from the auditions describing his act as more musical theater than actual rock, and I’ve never felt more connected to him, sigh. Danny is very sunburned and sweaty, but he does all right...feels Bradford wedding singer to me, which is what I think he is? Very on brand, lol.
Thank Christ the actual singing is over, so we can get to the good stuff, i.e., Dermot in a tight v-neck sweater whispering in Ayda's backyard, and all the contestants pensively wandering the estate in the dark (I don’t know why it’s so hilarious, but it really, REALLY is):
Tumblr media
I low-key want Ayda’s (knock-off) Versace...maybe it's real? Who cares, I love it, and here she is, instantly regretting putting Gio through:
Tumblr media
Anyway, Janice, Ola, Danny, and fucking GIO are in, and  Ricky and Louise are out (this is so noncontroversial as to seem obvious).
In lots of ways, the overs are channeling Harry’s fashion from years gone by, so it seems kind of fitting to hear “Sign of the Times” in the background (I’m glad Harry gets some $$). “Gotta get away from here…” LMAOOOOOOOOO.
Next week are the live shows, and I can’t wait to see what happens! Nothing really will, but Louis’s promising fun times, so I’m there. Except I’m not because I have a house guest in town, and he’s a massive Harry fan, but I doubt I can make him watch this garbage show, so my recap will come on Tuesday.

Hello! Do you know any Kemetic crystal correspondences? Or specific crystals used in heka?
So I used to have a post that people could go to that talks about this, but alas it has been removed. So this is an attempt to briefly recreate what was in the post that i haven’t read in 3+ years.
Egypt didn’t have crystal correspondences in the same sense of what we usually see in witchcraft books, but they did have some associations that went with different materials and colors.
Some things did ultimately become linked or associated with specific deities (such as turquoise with Hathor), but usually this was borne out of a specific aspect of a deity’s relationship with that material. As such, not every deity has a list of specific corresponding materials (in the same way that not every NTR has a specifically listed birthday in the same way that the Epag Day Kids do.)
Wood:
Sycamore (nehet) was tied to Nut, Isis and Hathor, though sometimes it could represent Ra-Horakhty. Two turquoise sycamore trees are said to stand at the eastern gate of heaven where Re emerges daily. Sycamore had heavy funerary ties and seemed to give sustenance to the dead (so did Hathor). Sycamores were buried near tombs, and their leaves could be funerary amulets.
Persea (ished) also had funerary ties as well as solar connotations. Persea also seems to be tied to the horizon, which is another solar place. They grew these bitches in Heliopolis from the OK onwards, and then Memphis and Edfu caught on to the coolness and grew their own Persea trees, too. There seems to be little to no mention of Persea before the NK.
Willow (tcheret) is sacred to Osiris, and there is a noted holiday called the “raising of the willow” for Osiris, which assured that the fields and trees of the land would flourish. Considered a symbol of life, fecundity, and rebirth. Any tomb that was said to house a part of Osiris seemed to have willow groves outside.
Multiple deities are said to have come forth from trees. Some other deity-tree associations:
Horus and Acacia
Wpwt and Tamarisk (iser)
Herybakef and Moringa
Often times the type of wood used in the creation of a statue or other item was taken into consideration for its magical/heka properties. Egyptians sometimes would also inlay stones or metals for additional symbolism.
Metal:
Usually only more rare metals had a symbolism or significant meaning. In some exceptions, bronze was substituted for gold.
Gold was regarded as a divine and imperishable substance and evoked thoughts of eternity and brightness. As such, its been associated with Ra and other solar deities. The flesh of the gods is said to be gold. Hathor was considered to be the personification of gold. There are also specific ties for Aset and Nebhet in regards to them sitting/standing on the symbol for gold. The sah or afterlife body was also thought to be a divine being with shining golden skin. Gold was often added to things to make them seem more important.
Silver was about as important as gold. The bones of the gods are said to be made of silver. Silver is considered to be tied to the moon and therefore any lunar deities. It’s also got ties to Hathor. Silver was imported during the first half of AE history, and was only more prominent in NK periods onward. As more access was made to silver, you find that more and more people were replacing gold with silver, because silver was seen as more rare.
Iron was known as “bep-en-pet” or “metal of heaven” because most of the earliest sources of iron were in the form of meteors. This gives it ties to eternity and the Duat, since that’s where the imperishable stars (ancestors, etc.) were. This metal has associations to both Set and Anup.
Lead was used for a lot of magical objects such as plaques used to cover and protect the embalming incision on a mummy or love charms. There has been a trend noted of lead being used in protective, destructive and defensive magic.
Stones:
Alabaster/Calcite was mainly used for small objects like vases, bowls and lamps.
Basalt has an association with the Duat and with the concept of revivification. Has ties to Osiris due to its color.
Quartzite has solar connotations.
Serpentine was often used for amulets made to ward off the attack of snakes and scorpions.
Colors:
Red (desher) is associated with blood and fire and could symbolize life and regeneration, but could also symbolize dangerous forces beyond the realm of total control (see Set, Sekhmet). Associated with the desert, and therefore Set. Associated with wrath and anger as well (desher ieb: furious; desheru: wrath). Scribes used red ink rather than black to write the hieroglyph for evil, unlucky days, as well as names of hostile monsters and a/pep. Often used for Eye of Ra amulets.
Blue (irtiu and khesbedj) represented the heavens and primeval flood/water. Associated with the Nile, fecundity, the phoenix, heron, and baboon. And by extension, Thoth. It could have solar connotations in certain situations. Also associated with Amun-Ra.
Yellow (khenet and kenit) basically has all of the same associations as the material gold above. Solar, sun, Re, eternity, etc.
Green ( wadj) is associated with growth and growing things, along with life itself. Tied to resurrection, and by extension, Osiris. Early texts refer to the afterlife as the field of malachite. Amulets depicting the Eye of Horus were often green because of ties to healing and well-being. The color is also associated with Hathor.
White (hedj and shesep) was used to depict sacredness and ritual purity. Heavy ties to priesthood. Many sacred animals were depicted in white – baboon, oxen, cows and hippos. Could be swapped out with the material silver. Associations with Nefertem, likely due to the white lotus flower. Became the heraldic color of southern Egypt.
Black (kem) is the color of night, death and the underworld, resurrection and fecundity. By extension, Osiris. Heavy overlap in symbolism with green, and many amulets tied with one color often appear in both colors. Common to find magical healing statues made in black materials as well.

For the writing meme! 8, 22, 24, and 47
(For this ask)
8. What time are you most productive?
Evenings!!! I write the best after supper and cutting into my bed time. Hence why 99% of the time I’m posting fics just before I head off to sleep!
22. Favourite story you’ve ever written
Picking a story is super difficult!
Excluding Waking Up in Pieces (because I usually claim that’s my favourite story), I really am happy with A Dance (Just for You). The terror and fear Inigo and the rest of the Awakening kids were facing in that story was a lot of fun to explore. I hope to continue it, perhaps in a different perspective.
24. Favourite scene you’ve ever written
Again, tough to say because I write so much. I’ll go with something a bit more recent though. Scene is from one of my FE Fates fics, Possessive Lightning.
“Odin saw red. Then blue. Then the air crackled around him. Odin shifted, feeling his mind split before he surged inside. All he could think and see was Leo in danger and Niles desperately trying to help. Electricity crackled and rolled and Odin felt Aegle merge with him, not quite a full take over, but enough for an electric bolt to rip through the undead soldier. The corpse fell onto Leo and then disappeared in a thin trail of purple smoke. Odin hissed, feeling Aegle’s emotions merge and split and merge again within him.
“How dare you.” Odin’s voice was slowly overlapping with Aegle’s. It sounded like an echo on top of emptiness. “How dare you hurt them!”
Odin sprung, anger, rage, desperation seeping and swirling and curling within him. He wasn’t sure if it was entirely his emotions and he didn’t care. His lovers. His Leo. His Niles. The enemy would pay.”
47. How many unfinished ideas/stories are you working on at the same time?
Right now? Right now I have seven stories. One of them is on-going and already has three chapters posted (my FE Fates fic), three of them have something written/ started, and three of them are merely memos on my phone’s memo pad.

…And he says he has a mission for you and your valiant pioneer friends. In less than two wags of their tails, you are all ready to follow the cryptic map the stranger has given you, and off for adventure!
That could be how a session of Fetch Quest starts. Story-wise.
Part of the fun, and part of what we’ll be exploring, with Fetch Quest is how the card game connects with the TTRPG. You can play it as a straight-up card game, you can add in your own characters as the pioneers going on the quests, you can role-play the challenges as well as solve them mechanically with the card game rules, and we’re looking at how a card set of missions could be transformed into a TTRPG adventure.
What I’m saying is, if the Kickstarter goes well, we have some ideas to explore.
In any case, the Kickstarter starts at 2pm Eastern US time Tuesday the 22nd – which is tomorrow as I write this. Here’s one of the videos we created to give more details about Fetch Quest:
As always, I have no idea if this one will do well, or even fund. You’d think after thirty of them I’d get blase, but I’m not. It’s still exciting and I always can’t tell if what we’re doing will be interesting enough and exciting enough to get folks pledging. We’ve all worked to make this one fun to follow, and Jaunty James Bell has proven to be an engaging “Kickstarter Concierge” as he titles himself, so it should be pretty cool. See ya there, good dogs!

Meanwhile, we posted a short Onyx Pathcast last Friday announcing that the team feel so confident and excited about the response to the first three episodes that they will now be doing it weekly! So make sure to subscribe to PodBean or whatever podcast service you use, and get ready for your weekly dose of insider info about Onyx Path and our projects, game design, gaming in general, professional wrestling, and general good-natured repartee.
And here is the link and their third visual treatment by our old friend and first edition Trinity developer Charlie Bates:
https://onyxpathcast.podbean.com/e/special-episode-one-youre-doing-great-kid/
We had a lot of fun doing this shorter special edition Onyx Pathcast, and yes, I said we as I joined Dixie and Matthew and basically pretended to weasel them into going weekly. Now, what you hear there is not what happened in real life as they all came to me with the weekly idea, but we thought we’d go broad and I’d be sort of a cross between an evil Stan Lee and P.T. Barnum. Hope it’s as much fun to listen to as it was to perform!
This week’s episode will be their interview with Impish Ian Watson, and these are some of the things they cover:
Ian talks about his history with the Trinity Continuum pitch, through the CCP merger, and into the creation of Onyx Path – Ian’s love for the Trinity line goes back to 1997.
We talk about rabbit holes and why we love what we love.
The dynamics of the Trinity Continuum design team, and how awesome Danielle Lauzon is.
How the Storypath System came to be and how we reframe Storypath between TrinityStorypath and They Came From.
Reexamining how we do the development process, and how we are trying new things for Aberrant.
Ian talks about his Community Manager role.
What’s exciting about this new version of Trinity – Aegis! Anima! (Maybe) – Trinity as a pop culture toolbox.
We answer some forum questions (did yours get answered? Listen to find out!)
We talk about fonts! Fonts are cool!
Aberrant‘s diversity.
Ian’s contributions to Vampire: Bloodlines.
So, just chock full of great conversation, and going live on Friday.

So, wrapping this up, I also took to heart your comments about pruning the Blurbs! section of this blog, and while I still want to consolidate the Amazon epub section, I think you’ll already find it a lot less bloated. We are also looking into the suggestion that we set up tabs featuring our various sales partners as a fixed place to locate them, and I’ll be able to only “blurb” new stuff.
Thanks for all your help. With all that we are doing, it can sometimes be an important task to find the best way to communicate all the great things that are happening with our…

5 Reasons Why Frasier Is Better (& 5 Why Cheers Is Superior)
Cheers has long been considered one of the greatest sit-coms of all time. With its clever writing, large ensemble cast, and relatable characters, it brought warmth and camaraderie into American living rooms. Audiences forgot their woes watching the misadventures of baseball player-turned-bar owner Sam Malone and the workers and patrons of the bar.
When it ended in 1993, one of its most unlikely characters received a spin-off; Dr. Frasier Krane. He had left his life in Boston to become a radio psychiatrist in Seattle. In Frasier, he juggled his work life and romantic life with a rowdy home life, often crowded with his roommates, an ex-cop father and his caregiver, as well as his pretentious younger brother. Where Cheers was working class, Frasier was upper class, but both had their distinct appeal. Both lasted eleven seasons and are considered masterworks. Below you'll find five reasons why each is the superior program.
10 FRASIER: IT WAS RIDICULOUSLY CLEVER
Tumblr media
Frasier is known and respected for its complex storylines and farcical tone.  Because of its deft amalgamation of intellectual jokes with slapstick gags, it can expand on the physical comedy of Cheers and take it to a new height of hilarity.
RELATED: Frasier: 10 Season 1 Jokes Everyone Completely Missed
While it helped to have an understanding of opera, theater, wine, and 18th-century Dutch antiques to appreciate the humorous banter between Frasier and Niles, a non-insignificant amount of clever humor could be derived from their father making fun of them for it.
9 CHEERS: IT DIDN'T TAKE ITSELF TOO SERIOUSLY
Tumblr media
One of the reasons why Cheers saw an uptick in audience numbers after a less-than-stellar first season was because viewers realized the show didn't take itself too seriously. There was one stuff-shirt in the cast (Frasier) but the rest of them were blue-collar stiffs.
It was the plight of the working man and woman that Cheers focused on, not the malaise of the upper class. The sort of humor thrown around the bar was smart, but bawdy, and could appeal to a much wider audience than Frasier's nuanced pattern of jocularity.
8 FRASIER: CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
Tumblr media
An area where Frasier really excelled was character development. Throughout the series, all the main cast went through real changes, with each of their choices significantly impacting their trajectory on the series. Niles went from being meek and timid with his abominable wife to having the courage to divorce her and pursue his true love, Daphne.
Roz, long-considered the office tart, ended up deciding to have a baby on her own as a single mother. Frasier's father Martin Crane remarried and found a new lease on life when it was thought his hip would prevent it. The cast of Cheers essentially remained the same in their attitudes from the first season to the last.
7 CHEERS: THEME SONG
Tumblr media
One of the most instantly recognizable theme songs in television history, the Cheers song (and title credits) is one of the most well-known of any other sit-coms. Like the theme song to Happy Days, it put audiences in a good mood. It was written by a pair of musical theater composers who gained notoriety for the song "People Like Us" from Preppies.
The theme song to Frasier oddly plays at the end of every episode, and rather than be written and sung by a composer of musical theater (which would be far more logical), it features Kelsey Grammar singing "Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs" like a bluesy musician who belongs at Cheers.
6 FRASIER: HOLDS UP TODAY
Tumblr media
One of the biggest differences between the series is the time periods in which they're set. Cheers takes place mostly in the 80s, and by the time it ended in '93, it didn't make use of technological advancements like cellphones or email. Even the film quality, color palette, and lighting of the series make it seem dated now.
RELATED: 10 Things From Cheers That Have Not Aged Well
Frasier on the other hand, marched steadily towards the new millennium, embracing the rapidly changing technology, and even witnessed a change in fashion that made the wardrobes of the main characters seem almost trendy today. It's emphasis on mental health also seems pertinent in today's more conscientious world.
5 CHEERS: NORM
Tumblr media
Though Cheers featured a lot of great personalities, none of them were as terrific as Norm Peterson. From the moment Norm walks in the door to the accustomed, "Norm" everyone unanimously greets him with, he dishes out one-liners throughout every episode that have become "Normisms" in pop culture.
For instance, Coach once asked if he could draw Norm a beer. Norm responded with, "No thanks, I already know what they look like. Just pour me a beer." Carla's sarcasm was amusing, Woody's ditziness was endearing, Cliff's know-it-all charm was good for laughs, but Norm was by far the best representation of a classic barfly.
4 FRASIER: NILES
Tumblr media
Who could have ever thought that the younger brother no one knew Frasier had would outshine him? It couldn't be helped, because Niles was every neurosis Frasier had turned up to eleven. He was the 1812 Overture to Frasier's Jazz Suite Waltz No. 2.
RELATED: Frasier: 10 Best Niles Crane Quotes
From his obsession with wiping off furniture, to his endless collection of Hugo Boss ties, and excitement about themed charity functions, he got all of the best eccentricities and much of the best dialogue. When Frasier told him he would shave his head for him, Niles coolly responded, "A gesture which becomes less significant with each passing year."
3 CHEERS: SOLID THE ENTIRE SERIES
Tumblr media
Aside from a slightly rough first season (though few first seasons are perfect), Cheers had a solid run for all eleven of its seasons. Even through Sam's on-again-off-again relationship with Diane, and then his on-again-off-again relationship with Rebecca, the show swirled about the love story at the heart of it without impediment.
Frasier had a strong first season and had a winning streak until about it's seventh when it hit the skids and didn't seem to know what to do in season 8, when it was approaching a decade on the air. It finally rallied in its final eleventh season, finishing strong.
2 FRASIER: MORE SETS
Tumblr media
Though the two main sets in Frasier consisted of the interior of his apartment and the KACL station, it incorporated other settings to keep the series seem like it was part of a bustling metropolis. One of the other main sets used was Cafe Nervosa, a frequent coffee shop for the characters, as well as a litany of restaurants, theaters, and the like.
Cheers mainly consisted of the bar set. The series was named after a bar, so no one left it. There was little need to take it anywhere else considering the characters came to the bar to escape the trials and tribulations of their work lives, home lives, and romantic lives (although those sometimes followed them in).
1 CHEERS: LARGE ENSEMBLE CAST
Tumblr media
One of the things that endeared audiences to Cheers from the beginning was its large ensemble cast. It included bar staff and bar patrons, with every character presenting a distinct personality, backstory, and sense of humor. Even the two barflies Norm and Cliff were completely different from one another in their humor and personal perspective.
On Frasier, the cast was smaller and more close-knit, with certain characters overlapping. The strongest difference in character archetypes was between Frasier and his father, with variations of their personalities found in Niles and Roz.

8:8 Stargate - Sirius Rising 2019
8:8 Stargate – Sirius Rising 2019
By Gillian Macbeth-Louthan
As the energies of the summer light heighten and grow like an un-mowed weed, we are escorted to a new conjunction of time and im-possibilities. We are asked to expand our horizons and expectations and our ability to receive. We are asked to become more, to do more, to see more, and to be more. Our gifts that come on the winds of change escort us into new understandings of how we are to boost our innate abilities. You are commander and chief of your cellular content; you are a directional for human consciousness. Your body seeks your direction and wisdom. Place this newly freed power/energy/light/ into any section of your life that needs and extra boost. It is pure energy, spend it well.
As we round the corner into the den of the Lioness in the month of Leo, we find ourselves face to face with our ancient future and our past.  Reflections in our world mirror our inner needs on all levels bringing to the surface all that has been buried alive. Emanations from the light behind the sun rearrange our brain waves, readjusting the thinking patterns that have kept us hostage in an elliptical orbit. The blue light from the star Sirius shines down onto all of our choices.  Stellar gateways open conduits are created.  Everything we do or do not do will be felt in all sections of the universe.
It is time for the solar lion to rise from her enigmatic posture of guardian and unleash what has been subjugated to human restriction.  A full positioning of this event transpires within the secret chamber of the left hemisphere of the brain for females and the right hemisphere of the brain for males.  Like an unexpected tsunami the ocean floor parts to release a surge and clear the mental shorelines of self.  Emanations from the stars reach down to work there healing magic upon all of us.  The light behind our Sun lifts her skirt exposing her stellar body for all to see. The dance of the seven veils of eternal time cleverly keeps most concealed.
On August 8, a living power will once again move into material form.  Like a cool breeze on a hot day just allow the solar emanations to encircle you without trying to corral them and tie them down.  The 8:8 is symbolic of the human DNA.  The star Sirius rises every midsummer this rising is associated with new thought, new light, and new beginnings.  It rises before the sun purposefully after being in stellar hiding for about 70 days.  Sirius houses the Great White Brotherhood, the Lemurian Elders and the Christ Consciousness. As the sun sends forth her rays of clarity a personal and planetary sonic boom is heard throughout the land.
Explosions of the old are atomic as they are cast off the old paradigm like dust in a dirt devil.  Truth unfolds itself to be seen in the long and short of it, Narrating a new bedtime story that can only be learned by heart.  Sleep beckons but the energy shouts so loud and is so demanding that sleep is short and not so sweet.
As the vibrations of the 8:8 Stargate is birthed the human body bucks at the thought of housing more light, downloading more encodings, or receiving any more truths. What was once hidden is seen, what was once seen is changed.  The eyes of the soul see with a new clarity redefining what was once considered dark.  The overlapping of the two suns creates a portal  for all to enter or exit depending upon choice. The tiredness comes to slow down the body and the ancient angers that stir in the emotional layer. The gravitational pull has increased as earth begins a new evolutionary spin.  Centrifugal force fails as all that was within the spinning bucket falls changing scientific truths to a point beyond confusion.
Sirius Rising 2019
The heliacal rising of a star occurs when it first becomes visible above the eastern horizon, for a single moment just before sunrise.  Each day after the heliacal rising, the star will rise slightly earlier and remain visible for longer before the light from the rising sun makes it disappear. The same star will reappear in the eastern sky at dawn approximately one year after its previous heliacal rising. Because the heliacal rising depends on the observation of the object, its exact timing can be dependent on weather conditions.
Sirius rising is different for every latitude, for the Smokey mts of Tennessee, it is on 8:8 this year. this date is a powerful doorway of unequaled opportunity to swim forward into a place of understanding your divine light skills.
Sirius has been honored since ancient times. In Atlantis, the mysteries were created on information received from the Sirian Star Masters. After the third fall of Atlantis, the Sirian mysteries spread into ancient Egypt. As early as 3000 BC the Egyptians started celebrating the helical rising of the star Sirius declaring this the New Year as the Nile flooded its banks in the time of the great lion, in the month of Leo.
Sirius is the home of Cosmic Christ for this entire Galaxy. It has ‘always’ been a spiritual prototype for Earth.  As the rays from Sirius arc onto earth via the sun, we have another opportunity to activate the Cosmic Christ seed within. The little solar jewels that are dormant DNA encodings, wait for stellar emanations to open sealed cellular files. When Sirius rises in your part of the world go out before dawn and look to the east. Whether cloudy or dark seen or unseen, the star Sirius will rise to meet you energetically. It is in the quiet times in-between words and thoughts that you will find the key that unlocks what has been sealed until now. Go outside, face east, and allow the pre-dawn energies to enter you. Ask to be released of all that no longer serves you and be filled in completion with that which serves your highest soul path and spiritual evolution.
Visualize the emanations and radiance of Sirius coming forth into your earth Heart from your star heart. Sirius gives you the gift of the ‘cycles of Time’, reconnectingall sacred spaces through time and space, on and off planet. The tone of creation sounds in every cell of your body on earth and cycles through all 144 levels of your light body. Without humans, the light from deep space, far off galaxies and event horizons would just continue to travel endlessly without ever stopping to gather and share the teachings and truths from other places of time and space. Light needs you as much as you need light; you are a receiving vessel.
This August 8, 2019 before the star Sirius rises, the winged messenger planet Mercury will make a morning appearance, escorting brilliant Sirius just before sunrise.  For Dandridge Tennessee latitude this would be August 8, 2019.  For locations farther south, this occurs days earlier and later for latitudes farther north. Go to this link for your actual date of Sirius rising per your latitude.
Start looking for Mercury and Sirius about 30 minutes before sunrise.  A binocular may help in viewing them.  Mercury is low in the east-northeast, about 10 degrees up.  Sirius is very low, in the east-southeast about 3 degrees up when first visible.  Sirius may twinkle wildly this low in the sky.Sirius, the Dog Star, is sometimes called the Nile Star because of its heliacal rising coincided with the flooding of the Nile River.  The first sighting of Sirius and its association with the rebirth of the Nile was so important that its heliacal rising marked the start of the Egyptian calendar year. Heliacal relates to the star’s proximity to the Sun. in the ancient past, Sirius made its first appearance in early July as seen from the ancient capital of Memphis, but due to the precession of the equinoxes, the star now rises in early August.

Thursday
It was a Thursday. That part of the week that seemed to drag - when everyone was done with being anyway productive. Afternoons built on talks about plans for the weekend - discussions Manchester’s best pubs, clubs favouring over the team assignment you were supposed to be working on. Uni.
It’s when there’s a sudden buzz, a flashing screen - your phone. A break in the haze of boredom and stagnant conversation.
Outside. Red vines & vodka ready.
That is i’m outside if you’re in uni.. which i assume you are cos you’re a good girl ;)
But i was thinking you could come be a little bit bad for a couple hours..
A knowing smile - the series of texts. Familiar. But someone you hadn’t heard from in a while.
George Daniel, back to corrupt me more?
An almost instantaneous bounce back of;
We both know that ship has long sailed, love.
Biting down harder - the cap of your pen, faint buzz of ongoing conversation fading, replaced by his voice when you read the next message.
So.. seeing as you’ve really nothing to lose.. meet me outside? Might even be some flying saucers in it for you..
And despite his constant disappearing acts - he knew you well. Well enough to know your favourite drinks and sweets. And you’re already shoving books, notebooks into your bag. No one notices, looks up when you hurry out of the room - trying for dignified and not at all like you were rushing. Trying to shrug on a jacket whilst text, pen still hanging from your lips. Eagerness.
Any chance of some chocolate? ;)
George’s flat - a shared one with his best friend - stinks of weed. An unmistakable smell - exacerbating in his room. George never really invited girls into his room, and when he did it was in the early hours of the morning, when there was echos of gin between mouths and hazy thoughts ran parallel in heads, and names that would be long forgotten come the morning.
This was a first.
George was cool - very tall and very attractive in a nonconventional way. He used to have long hair - that made it messy when you kissed. Only a handful of times - heavy touches in bathrooms of houses where the thundering of your heart whenever he touched you, was hidden by a heavier bass flooding, reverberating through the floorboards.
Conversations were soundtracked by intricate rap that you could never keep up with and deep bass that made your veins buzz and head spin. George mumbled a lot when he spoke - unintentional but his sentences kept the same mantra as the house music, words kept the same beat as the rap.
So George’s room was a surprise. From the colour of the walls to the posters scattered around them. Some were films, some were music, and a lot less naked girls than you had expected. A stack of books - Aldous Huxley, Carl Nielsen, a few of the names that stand out, again not what you had expected. Maybe the biggest surprise - was the record player in the corner, and shelves packed with an extensive collection of vinyls.
Not a rap, dubstep CD in sight.
“They’re organised by year,” he tells you. Watching - fingers spanning over names. He hadn’t spoken since - gauging your reaction, a new dimension of him. One he didn’t have to worry about in the dark when the main concern was getting clothes off, figuring where mouths should go. Too sober - handing you the glass, lemon fanta and vodka and a half eaten red vine as an afterthought.
“Top shelf is 60′s, 70′s, 80′s, more 80′s, 90′s..” - trailing off, watching his gestures moving down a shelf with each year. He points out a few from each decade - landmarks, favourites.
The 60′s hold Rolling Stones, Velvet Underground, Beach Boys, Hendrix, Ray Charles, Jackson 5. A lot of jazz.
70′s - Fleetwood Mac, Sex Pistols, Zepplin, Pink Floyd, The Stooges, Bowie, Queen, Joy Divison, Deep Purple, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Eagles, The Clash. There’s a twitch then - a wave of relaxation when you ask about names you haven’t heard, and he explains the whole jazz fusion experiments in the 70′s, a universe aways from the age of punk rock vs new romantics you were familiar with. And it’s nice to hear his voice without the bass, the rap. It’s nice to hear his voice near combusting with passion.
He’s making eye contact by the 80′s - the glass being passed. The Cure, Peter Gabriel, INXS, Bowie, Depeche Mode, Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson, Prince, The Blue Nile, Sonic Youth, The Replacements, The Cramps, Fleetwood Mac, Ramones, New Order, The Smiths, The Jam, Talking Heads, Morrissey, Yazoo, The Stone Roses, The Flying Pickets, Tears For Fears, Psychedelic Furs, Pixies, Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine.
The 80′s went on - clearly his favourite, a playful debate over the best record of the decade. Him - Everywhere, Fleetwood Mac. You - Hats, The Blue Nile.
It’s Hats that ends up on the record player. Background noise, you can still hear him, without the music pumping in your veins. He has a shoebox under his bed - Matty thinks there are actual shoes inside, not weed. A practical hiding place. Rolling spliffs while you get more drinks. You know his kitchen better than his bedroom.
He tells you stories from the floor - about the band, Matty, fills you in on what you’ve missed while smoke clouds. Obscuring features and thoughts.
The band are close to getting signed, they’re writing better stuff, he’s not with Alexa anymore, Matty’s dating some seventeen year old and has started writing a book, his sister got a new puppy called Lola - yes after the song. He talks most about Matty and dogs. More of the latter when the weed begins to kick in. His two greatest loves, you tease. He doesn’t deny it. Quintessential - typical George.
He’s teaching, attempting to teach you, how to blow smoke rings, sat opposite you on the bed. Downed drinks and melting ice - forgotten on the floor. Giggles filtering through smoke. He tells you - you should come over more often, like old times, to play Mortal Kombat. Matty was getting way too cocky, and you were the only one that could ever manage to top him.
Then it’s back to bands - he remembers how much you adore punk rock, Sex Pistols. He thinks Matty still has a tshirt you left here once before a night out. He does - you seen him wearing it at a gig a few weeks back. George pontificates - about genres for a while, about how their new sound defies that. Defies the genre boundaries of the charts, society’s perceptions. Why they couldn’t manage to get signed. He tells you he’ll play you a few songs later if you stick around for supper. Matty’s bringing back Chinese.
He has new tattoo’s - ones your fingertips trace with ease, splatters of colour spiraling down his arm. There’s a snail on the inside of his wrist - one he tells you he wishes he could remember the story behind when you ask. Smoke curls - thick in the air, when you tell him you want to get one. He grins, insisting he’ll take you to his mate.
“He’s gotten well good now - me and Matty don’t just let him practice on our legs anymore,” he tells you through an exhale. When you still sound doubtful - having seen the practice scrawls on both their legs - he chuckles, a lopsided smirk, setting his blunt down before leaning closer and naturally your eyes flicker from his to his lips. “Don’t worry, love - wouldn’t let any less than the best touch you.”
For a second - you’re certain he’s going to kiss you, and you’re ready for that. It’s been way too long. His lips land on the tip of your nose - enticing further giggles, and you don’t ask him to kiss you. Despite every bone in your body, every thought - screaming, burning.
When spliffs near half finished - record replaying, George sprawled on the bed, smoke clouding - watching your every move. Not quite sure why he hasn’t done this before - with you. You’ve found the wall that held clutters of polaroids - some recognisable as ones you had taken, shared mates, gig nights, festivals, birthdays, pubs, family - a lot of memories, a lot you knew the stories behind, a lot you wish you knew the stories behind.
Surprisingly there’s a lot of you and George - scattered dates and smiles and funny faces. The only real giveaway that time had passed between poses - George’s hair went from short to long, your’s changed style and colours, tattoo’s made appearances and your braces disappeared.
“You always looked well cute with them,” quiet, in time with the record. Realising he’s moved closer, edge of his bed, a clear view of the wall you were currently entranced with.
A giggle, shaking your head - “they were hideous, Christ.”
It’s quiet then, a comfortable silence. Through The Downtown Lights, smoke, and evanesce of evening sunlight filtered through half shut blinds.
"C'mere," - low, setting the spliff down, fingers reaching for your hand, pulling you back over to him, the bed. You edge inbetween his legs, lip catching between your teeth when he takes your blunt, inhaling before setting it alongside his.
Fingers - his hair, and you mumble something about how you liked it when it was longer.
Fingers - spanning down the back of your neck. bringing your lips to his. Smoke curling, intertwining around tongues. Hesitantly - lowering yourself to his lap, knees at his hips, arms - his neck, your fingers hover around his hair.
George - not so hesitant, fingers gripping at thighs, bringing bodies closer. Evoking - soft sounds, when tongues overlap. Lips - slow, lazy against yours, but there’s still a lack of air, lungs beginning to burn. And you’ve missed this - the feeling of him, the taste of him. The familiar ache for more, the welcome electricty of every touch. He tastes like how he smells - with an underlay of something sweeter.
Fingers - end up entangled in hair, using it to guide his mouth back to yours when swollen lips wandered astray. When the burning in chests and spinning in heads became unbearable, and oxygen became more of a vital need than a want - lips left yours in favour of planting messy kisses along your jaw, all pants of hot air and heaving chests and frantic touches through hazy vision.
George is the focal point - the only centre of gravity keeping you down. His name echoing through your thoughts, his taste rushing through your veins, and his touch drums out your heartbeats.
Warmth - fingers grip your hips, so tight you know there’ll be ghosts of imprints later on, not something you were adverse to. Just like the marks he took the initiative to litter down the right side of your neck. Drawing out his own beat of soft sounds in forms of breathless sighs and whimpers. All while frantic fingers struggled with the zip on your hoodie, yours on the hem of his tshirt. Heat radiating, lust surging.
A harsh carnality - a growling hunger for more skin, a new ground for lips and teeth.
Your back - cool sheets, a catalyst to the heat. It was cold in the flat, his room before this had started. Bodies - fitting together in an almost flawless manner, fire running in your veins, filling your lungs.
A hellish heat enunciated with each touch of his lips when they travel over untouched skin, exploring new reactions, marks. They stop - the waistband of your shorts, palms against your thighs.
“Is it - I mean is it alright if.. Can I.. Fuck it, is this alright?” dilated pupils, kiss swollen lips, stumbling over words with an evident frustration. Eagerness.
You can only nod, teeth latching onto your lip to suppress giggles. Heat - reigniting when lips skim over skin, inside of your thighs. Enticing new sounds - hinting towards carnality. Hips - twitch, upwards, chasing his mouth when kisses are felt through thin material. Where you crave him. His name - spilling from your lips, a desperate kind of sound, not one you have any control over.
Friction - calloused fingertips coming to rest, play with the hem of your underwear. Clouded pupils meeting yours - and you’ve grown far too impatient. Fingers - his hooking into green cotton, yours reaching guiding his down.
This was something you and George did - together. This was new - but it had always been there. An over looming tension, a threatening thunderstorm.
So when your breath sort of stops at the sudden realisation of it all, and George’s catches in his throat, an almost inaudible sound - somewhere between a groan and a chuckle of ‘nice.’ Albeit - it’s an almost to himself comment, one you can’t prevent a bout of giggles to, echoed by him when he glances up again. And they sink into your veins when his lips, your thigh.
His name mixed with jumbled expletives - ricochet around your throat when his mouth is finally on you. Where it counts, where you crave him, where the source of the fire is.
Your eyes snap shut - the intensity of the pleasure, heat. His glance up - gauging reactions of certain spots. Fingers - one hand entangled through his hair, the other gripping at bedsheets. Fingers - your thighs, hips, cool imprints.
There’s gravel in his throat when he gets a taste of you. Better than what he had ever expected - sweet, a hint of tangy. His low sounds against you enticing louder ones to travel through your body.
Teeth - sinking into your lower lip, hips arching towards him when he tongue ficks over hyper sensitive flesh. An action he repeats just to feel your thighs shudder, tremble around him for a second time. Just to hear the harshness of the carnal sounds spilling from your lips.
And after seconds, minutes of him setting a tormentalous dance, you begged for him to do it again. Begged in form of unhinged sounds resembling desperate pleas, breathless pants of his name. Something he’s be lying if he says he’s never thought about, fantasised about. Hearing her beg for him. Hearing how needy she was for him. How much she needed him.
Once it sufficed enough for him, smirk curving against skin - he gave in. Fire - brought your thighs to tremble around his head, your back to arch when nerve endings sparked off in your lower stomach. Frantic mewls - desperate renditions of his name, along with, ‘please’s’ and ‘fuck’s’ all disarranged into one word.
Gentle coaxes, encouragements - reberverting against sensitive skin, your hips twitching towards him, breathless sounds. His hand catching yours - fingers lacing, your nails grazing the back of his hand.
Building - blood rushing, and your sounds grow louder, his name echoes, thighs tremble. Nearing the edge - you fingers, his hair, all but forcing his face further against you. A state of overbearing ecstasy.
George - low groans, throaty sounds, giving another sensation. The one that tips you over the edge, knocking any sort of balance you had left. Spiraling undone, shattering around him.
Messy hair and equally messy bedsheets. Sheets - wrapped around your lower waist, bare legs draped over George’s. George - Calvin’s, heated skin cooling, harsh marks darkening. The shared spliff between his lips - fingers tracing freckles along your leg. Comfortable, silence. George put on a different record. Beach Boys.
Gaze - lingering, when he passes you the spliff. You focus on the smoke instead, teasing out shapes, smirk curving your lips when his hand, fingers inch higher, tracing over a mark he left.
“You’re proper cool, y’know - really fit,” and it obvious by how much his words lag just how high he is. Not that you’re much better. A soft sound - a laugh, head resting against the wall, lolling towards him. “All that from a bit of head? Wow, G.”
“Oi,” - an uneven smile, elbow to your ribs. “Always thought you were cool - even with the braces and very edgy fringe.”
A louder laugh when you tell him to shut up. But - he tells her he’s serious when she passes him back the blunt, smoke curling - obscuring features. It’s darker now, the last bit of sunlight fading, casting shadows across his bedroom. Pink skies.
Your name leaves his lips - full of sincerity and earnestness. Different. “You know, I really like you. And I know neither of us have been around much but that’s what got me thinking...”
Trailing off, receding back into thoughts for a moment or two, until you make a snide comment.  “George Daniel, thinking - imagine that.”
Chuckles - and he tells you to shush, holding the spliff out of your reach, telling you to be nice and he’ll think about giving you a drag.
“But seriously, when we leave on the first tour - eventually, I know I’d want you to be there.” He says without really looking at you, and your eyes go wide, the last thing you’d expected him to say, expected him to be thinking about. The confines of his room held more surprises than what you had bargained for and the bass of all those house parties and late walks home was building up in your veins again.
“I mean - I know you’ve uni and probably a proper job by then, but y’know you could still come out to a few, yeah?” Clouded pupils catching yours, his voice lowers further. “It - It would mean a lot to me, I want you there for the start. You’ve always been here, and yeah we don’t talk as much as we’d like to at the moment, but - you’ve never doubted the band, me. Alexa did, you heard how many times she told me I was wasting my time. C’mon, it would be mint - especially with a really cool, really fit bird who doesn’t mind exchanging head every now and then.”  A smile, one that reaches his eyes while you roll yours and tell him he’s gone mad.
But - George has never been one to give up easily, you know that by now. Just as stubborn as he is placid. Shifting to sit up against the wall. “Look, babe - think about it, anywhere in the world you want to go,” and he lists off names and places you’ve mentioned before, you’re surprised he remembers. “all that with paid hotels. And new merch,” fingers tugging at the faded Nirvana tshirt you had put back on, “Okay, it’ll be our merch, but the best. We get to meet new bands, work with new people - and all those gigs we wanted to go to but could never afford, Matty won’t be able to blow that much on fucking drugs anymore.”
Smoke clouds, and time passes. George blurts out more selling points, and by the end of it - watching how happy, ecstatic the whole topic makes him. Whether  it’s got to do with the possibility of you being there or not. You’ve made up your mind. You want to see more. More of him being this happy.
Winding down - George’s voice fizzling out, for a second you think he’s fallen asleep. Your name - a different tone, more serious, a hint of uncertainty, vulnerability. A pause. Dilated pupils - focused on a mark on your thigh. Watching - his brow furrow.
“You’re one of my best friends. It sounds soppy as shit but - I really, I need you there, babe.”
Deep brown - flickering up, and it’s a rush of breath resembling, “Come with me?”
You stare, gauging for a few seconds. Bringing a near burnt out spliff to your lips, eyes holding his. On an exhale you nod with a shrug. “Alright, mate. I’m in.”
Warmth floods - when a smile that almost splits his face breaks out. Voice wavering, excitement, disbelievement. “Yeah? You’ll do it? You’ll come with me? With the band?”
An amused sound - nodding telling him yes again. Almost pouncing on you at that, a bone shattering hug, one arm tight around your waist. Built on giggles and messy short sloppy kisses that begin to get more heated.
It’s sudden - a charring heat at your ribs, enticing rasped squeals, screams in shock more than pain, George pulling back in mild confusion. Until - you let out a shout of, “you just bloody burned me with the fucking spliff, you fucking twat.”
Albeit it trails off into a laugh, one he joins in on. Lips - messy kisses, teeth clashing. Mumbled endearments and false promises. A lot like old times, a lot like something new.

5 Vacation Outfits Featuring My Favorite Brazilian Designers

5 Vacation Outfits Featuring My Favorite Brazilian Designers
Cashews. Who knew it would take travelling to Brazil to learn that the fibrous fruit from which the nut is borne, which tastes like a subtle pineapple, is native to my home country of Ghana? Or that the fruit would spin a harmonious thread through food, fashion and overlapping cultures for me?
There are several prisms through which the culture of a people and the pulse of a place can be refracted. When South America’s largest airline, LATAM, launched its inaugural nonstop flight from Miami to Salvador, Bahia, last month, I thought I might use it as an invitation to learn about Brazil’s fashion scene. I immediately contacted my friend Thiara Collorec, a London-via-Paris-based former lawyer and current fashion editor for Elle.fr, or simply put, the most stylish Brazilian I know. She also happens to be a Baiana.
According to her, “Brazilian style is difficult to explain but easy to recognize. Brazilians dress to feel sexy and empowered, whatever the body type.” Of Baiana style, she told me, “You can still feel the influence of African heritage there, especially in that Bahia style is more colorful and vibrant than that of southern Brazil.”
Given Thiara’s words, I was ready for headwraps and shocks of color, but I was not ready for how much Bahia would feel like one of the places I call home. To attempt to enumerate all the ways Bahia reminds me of Ghana — from all the forms of cassava consumed throughout the region to the eyes, lips and noses that seemed spun from the DNA of my own — might be a task as feckless as attempting to drink the Nile. Suffice it to say that Ghana and Bahia are certainly tributaries that flow into the same river of whatever constitutes “Afro-ness.”
Once, during an interview about the concept of home on the podcast On She Goes, host Aminatou Sow asked me whether I adapt to the places I travel to or make them adapt to me. My answer then and now is that I must find a symbiosis of the two extremes: Who I am will not relent because of a change in terrain, but who I am is also allowing my being to be transfigured by the air of a place. Which brings me back to fashion and my exploration of it in the Brazilian context. Certain garments did not always speak to my inclinations, and yet I found a welcome challenge in molding those I wouldn’t otherwise gravitate towards into my own aesthetic model. Above all, it was a joy to learn about and meet some of the minds and hands driving the Brazilian fashion train.
Of Orixás and Caipirinhas
Location: Pelourinho, Salvador
Alessandra Affonso Ferreira, the design brain behind São Paulo-based label Sissa, spent her formative years in Salvador, where she and her husband-turned-business partner, Julian, also got married. Alessandra loves the “rustic chic” of the Pelourinho, Salvador’s historic district, known for variegated colonial buildings and the “air of African mysticism” of Bahia, and this is evident in her earthy design ethos.
Here I’m wearing her Claudia dress, which is your typical shirt dress with a touch more volume, as if an homage to traditional Baiana regalia and the festivals of Lavagem and Yemanjá, when the faithful of Bahia are clad in alabaster in homage to the Orixás (Yoruba gods) Oxalá and Yemanjá respectively. For a look to carry me from day exploration to a night of sipping caipirinhas, I layered it with a matching beaded and embroidered bra and jacket set by PatBO, the brand founded by Brazil’s goddess of embellishment, Patricia Bonaldi. Nothing’s ever black and white — neither Brazil’s African ancestry nor this outfit — so I chose midnight-blue knotted heels by perhaps Brazil’s most recognizable fashion name, Alexandre Birman. Streamlined yet whimsical, the trio of knots on the shoes are redolent of the ritual of tying garlands into three knots on the fences surrounding Salvador’s Bonfim church — each knot representing a wish — which culminates in fences festooned with a rainbow of possibilities: the dreams and prayers of a multitude rendered in living color and tickled by the passing wind.
Opposites Attract
Location: Feira de São Joaquim
Paula Raia is perhaps the Brazilian clothing brand with which I found the most consonance. With sharp lines and weighty fabric, her designs are often monochromatic but textured for nuance, like this ribbed cream ensemble. For a pop of color, I chose shoes by Brazilian fashion’s darling du jour, Lane Marinho. The bouffant-haired Salvador native, responsible for the made-to-order sandals that all of Brazil covets, started out at another well-known shoe brand before she began crafting her own shoes, at first making each pair entirely by hand. She now takes orders at her São Paulo atelier with a 45-day wait time for delivery.
Rise though her star has, Salvador and its rustic São Joaquim market (where I’m pictured) remain fondly ensconced in her heart. I found myself caught up in São Joaquim’s similarities to the markets of my youth, like Accra’s Santana market. White yams, sexy green okra and towers of sugarcane: A sea might separate us, but certainly food links the western coast of Africa and northern Brazil. “Linkage” is also the word that comes to mind to describe the pair of earrings I chose from Bia Daidone and its interacting orbitals. The earrings seem to be a study in concavity versus convexity and the interaction of opposites that results in seamless circularity. I finished the look with a clutch from Serpui, a brand known for its small handbags that range from amoebic toucan shapes to classic beveled boxes like the brushed brass one I am carrying.
Fringe Benefit
Location: Praia do Forte town center
Praia do Forte is a archetypal beach town about a 90-minute drive from Salvador where the sea breeze is relentless and the evening light sublime. There, in this sleepy enclave, among the coast-seeking masses and on its quiet village streets, this floral jacket from PatBO found meaning for me. The flow of the beaded fringe dripping from the sleeve hem found its way in the wind, just as a vendor of shell necklaces found me and offered to tie a green one of the ubiquitous Baiana garlands on my wrist in three knots for three wishes.
This much jacket meant the rest of the look had to be toned down, but not so much as to be drowned out. Enter Studio Chofakian shoes. The label founded by Sarah Chofakian is known for its minimalist, architectural form, and if any Brazilian shoe brand could withstand this much jacket with dulcet fierceness, this is it.
Orange Is the Warmest Color
Location: Tivoli Eco Resort, Praia do Forte
By morning light at the Tivoli Eco Resort in Praia do Forte, I slipped on a three-part citrus symphony by beachwear designer Adriana Degreas. Degreas is known for her vibrant swimwear and breezy kaftans with surprising details and is a mainstay in the Miami market with shops at Aventura and Merrick Park malls. Encircling my neck is a choker I found at the aforementioned Bia Diadone atelier in São Paulo. Bia, though slight in appearance, is a tower of effervescence with graceful fortitude of spirit. Creating each 18k-gold-plated brass piece by hand, her process begins with feeling the metal in delicate yet calloused hands, bending and beating brass into geometric submission and allowing the process itself to reveal the form. The choker presents a powerful interplay of strength and sensuality: a whisper and the crescendo of an operatic aria all at once.
And who can resist the work of sea breeze against volumes of silk? I cheated a little on Brazilian designers — but fittingly, given Bahia’s African heritage — and pulled in this black silk and batik kimono from Ghanaian-American label Studio One Eighty Nine. It’s easy to feel like a formidable Orixà arising from the morning mist when wearing a bright orange turban and arabesques of obsidian silk, and isn’t that the feeling we all require from a holiday?
Silks and Stones
Location: Garcia D’Avila Fortress
The Garcia d’Ávila fortress in Mata de São João, Bahia, is one of designer Juju Afonso Ferreira of Isolda’s favorite places. Yet another Bahia native in Brazil’s constellation of design stars, her brand is renowned for its ultra-feminine aesthetic. Against the decaying aubergine and brown walls of the skeleton of the castle overlooking the Atlantic, her sanguine silk skirt sings in harmony with this pink off-shoulder shirt. Another iteration of Alexandre Birman’s sandals, rendered in red and pink velvet, mirrors the gradient of rouges, but a middle tie in moss green cuts the color-coded look.
Paula Cadematori’s “Twi Twi” bag in tan, with its subtle yet defining pink edging, is also a nod to a red color story. The Milan-based Brazilian designer’s bags are often as boldly colorful as Brazilian culture itself. Not visible, unfortunately, is how the orbital pair of Daidone earrings I chose pair with the petite, gold, cashew-shaped buttons that fasten the shirt cuffs. The cashew closures are, of course, a quiet reference to the oft-overlooked slice of historic and cultural paradise that is Afonso’s hometown: Bahia.
Bahia itself is probably better suited to “spending the whole day in shorts, shoeless,” as is my friend Thiara’s definition of happiness, and São Paulo is undoubtedly the epicenter of Brazil’s fashion universe. And yet Bahia has borne some of the highest-hanging fruit on the tree of Brazilian fashion, perhaps because of the soul espoused by the place. Everyone told me I’d be intoxicated by the light in Bahia and, while I could drink its evening light to the lees, for me, Bahia represents finding a culture an ocean away that in so many ways resembles my own. Fashion was the icing on the cake (or in this case, the shrimp on the acarajé).

The word alchemy comes from the Arabian al-kimia, referring to the preparation of 'Elixir' or the 'Stone' by the Egyptians. The Arabic kimia, in turn, comes from the Coptic khem, which referred to the fertile black Nile delta soil and also to the dark mystery of the primordial First Matter (the Khem). This is the origin of the word 'chemistry'. There were often many symbols for an element. For a time, the astronomical symbols of the planets were used to denote the elements. However, as alchemists were persecuted, particularly in medieval times, secret symbols were invented. This led to a great deal of confusion, so you will find some overlap of symbols. The symbols were in common use through the 17th century; some are still in use today. The alchemy symbols for earth, wind, fire, and water were fairly consistent (unlike those of the chemical elements). These symbols were used for "elements" into the 18th century, when alchemy gave way to chemistry and scientists learned more about the nature of matter.Earth was indicated by a downward-pointing triangle with a horizontal bar running through it. The alchemy symbol for air or wind is an upright triangle with a horizontal bar. Plato also connected the qualities of wet and hot to the Air symbol. The symbol was associated with the colors blue or white or sometimes gray. The alchemy symbol for fire looks like a flame or campfire. It's a simple triangle. According to Plato, the symbol also stands for hot and dry. It's associated with the colors red and orange. Fire was considered male or masculine. The symbol for water is the opposite of the one for fire. It's an inverted triangle, which also resembles a cup or glass. Plato associated the symbol with the qualities wet and cold. The symbol was often drawn in blue or could refer to that color. Water was considered female or feminine. In addition to Earth, Air, Fire, and Water, many cultures also had a fifth element. This varied from one place to another, so there was no standard symbol. The fifth element could be aether, metal, wood, or something different.

They say that in life, you have to play the hand you’re dealt, which is true. However, you can also stack the deck in your favour with some tactical tailoring. A good suit enhances (read: hides) Mother Nature’s gifts: it’s like wearing an Instagram filter, or walking around with flattering lighting constantly overhead. Slip it on, and suddenly you’re a new, better-looking man, as if God Himself has retouched you. Although, not all suits are good for everybody, or indeed every body. Whether you’re short, tall, skinny, large or stacked, a bespoke solution is required – even if you’re only buying off the peg. Finding the right suit needn’t be a gamble. This is the FashionBeans guide to the type of suit that, well, suits your type.
Short Men
So what if you drew the vertically challenged genetic straw, it needn’t suck all that much, or even appear to be the case once you learn a few tricks of the trade. “Think linear,” says Tim Ardron, head of private tailoring at Savile Row’s Gieves & Hawkes, which has over 200 years’ experience dressing everyone from Michael Jackson to the Duke of Cambridge. In other words, the aim is to create the appearance of one long line from head to toe. “A neat, tapered trouser worn slightly higher on the hip adds inches to the legs,” continues Ardron. By contrast, a big break (the amount of trouser that falls onto the shoe) or drop crotch will shorten them, and you. “Balance this with a more contemporary length on the jacket.” Many brands and retailers offer ‘short’ cut versions of their suits; this elongates your pins, while the deep V-shape created by a two-button jacket ensures your torso isn’t too diminutive.

Avoid belts and wearing a suit as separates, which will saw you in half like a bad magician and stop the eyes flow from top to bottom. Pinstripes, on the other hand, do the opposite by directing the eye up and down, as long as they’re not too thick or widely spaced. Similarly, micro-checks are better than large windowpanes. Extra shirt cuff peeking out from under the arm of the jacket can also help your suit look proportionally smaller and not like an adult size being worn by a child, as will slimmer lapels. At the same time, you want enough structure in the shoulders to balance out your head, which can appear disproportionately large. A diagonal peak lapel simultaneously provides a vertical line and a bit of horizontal heft.
Tall Men
Those in this category have the opposite problem to short men and therefore – surprise, surprise – the opposite solution. More specifically, the aim is to break up the vast space between your head and toes all the way down there in the distance, beneath the clouds. Your trousers should break (cleanly, though) on your shoes: any hint of mankle will make it look like your suit has shrunk, as will overly short sleeves. “There’s a lot of you, so try not show this off too much,” says Campbell Carey, creative director of Huntsman, another Savile Row stalwart, founded in 1849. Your jacket should also be on the longer side to cut your leg line. “Don’t fall into the trap of showing a load of trouser fly and, worse still, shirt sticking out below the jacket button,” says Carey.

Speaking of jacket buttons, there are conflicting opinions over whether a third one breaks up a lanky torso or highlights it. The simple answer is that it depends on the placement: a high three-button is creating a long line in one direction; a low two-button is doing the same but in the other direction. Neither is particularly helpful. An extra ticket pocket (a small flapped opening usually above the right hip pocket) will help clutter you up, as will wearing a pocket square. Ditto patterns that send the eye sideways like big checks. Wearing separates is one of your greatest weapons when it comes to looking less lofty. Mixing and matching trousers and blazers not only gets you more wear out of your sartorial wardrobe, it also breaks up a tall frame. You can even further this by adding a belt (your shorter friends should have a few going spare if they have read the above).
Skinny Men
Skinny men share some of the same problems as the short and tall guy, but predominantly the latter. “Gentlemen with a skinnier build should follow the same advice as a taller client,” says Gieves’ Ardron. “There’s no need to go overly tapered or skinny fit. The purpose of tailoring is to flatter and disguise any quirks or figurations, not to accentuate them.” Your goal is to add some weight to your barbell-like physique. Busy patterns, pleated trousers with cuffs and even heavier fabrics like tweed and wool will all pile it on from an onlooker’s perspective. “Checks and textured weaves can add presence,” says Ardron.

A double-breasted jacket, with its overlapping material at the front and buttons that encourage lateral thinking, will give you visual gains quicker than a tub of Freakbeast 5000. While you might want standard rather than slim lapels to counteract your rakishness, and maybe a bit of extra shoulder padding like the short guy, always keep everything broadly in proportion to your body and head. Too wide and you’ll look like Frasier’s brother Niles.
Larger Men
The style world has got increasingly better at catering for guys with larger builds, and therefore you shouldn’t be deterred from tailoring, especially as this is your opportunity to contour. You’ve got more things in common with the vertically challenged guy, in that you want to create a long – and, crucially, lean – line. “I would advise a similar formula to the short body type,” says Huntsman’s Carey. “Stay well away from large checks as they will shorten your silhouette. A narrow pinstripe on a slimming darker base gives a longer look.”

As with the Napoleonic chap, a two-button jacket and high-waisted trousers are your friends in the right places, elongating and narrowing accordingly. Again, a peak lapel can contribute to your verticality, while its width is more proportional to, well, yours. Meanwhile, the reverse of the skinny guy applies to you: lighter fabrics like hopsack or cotton can take a few optical pounds off. And don’t make the common mistake of going baggy to try to hide your girth, as you’ll only exaggerate it: the jacket should skim your shoulders. You can nip it in to give the illusion of a narrow waist (slanted hip pockets can also perform the same trick), providing it’s not bursting at the seams.
Athletic Men
Have you been working out? Congratulations: chances are you’ve got the ideal build for a suit. Just don’t mess it up. “It’s a question of proportion: striking the right balance between a tapered waist and the correct fit across broad shoulders,” says Gieves’ Ardron. “I see too many younger chaps walking around with their jackets hacked in to the point where the waist button is about to pop off.” Tailoring is designed to emphasise your form in the same way that the gym does. So if you’ve already put the hard work in at your local iron paradise, you don’t need your suit to do any heavy lifting: “Cuts with soft, natural shoulders tend to work best,” adds Ardron. In a similar vein, aggressively tapered trousers – a very modern affliction – will make you look like Johnny Bravo: balance is always more elegant. (Ditto dramatic peak lapels – a proportionally wide notch is less showy.) Besides, you don’t want to think you skip leg day.

If anything, you want to add bulk to your bottom half with details such as pleats, which will also make room for your squatter’s glutes, quads and hams (as will a larger rise – the gap between the waistband and crotch seam). A slightly longer jacket will give your chicken legs some stuffing to even out your heaving pecs. The only real problem men of this body type have is their ability to buy off the peg. “Ready-to-wear is always difficult as the industry tends to expect a big chest to come with a big gut to match,” says Huntsman’s Campbell. If you can’t spring for bespoke or made-to-measure, find retailers that sell suit jackets and trousers separately. When it comes to pattern and colour, you can pretty much do what you like according to Campbell. For example, he recently made bright blue and aubergine suits for NFL players Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson, AKA the Jacksonville Jaguars’ wide receivers: “Quite a statement, but with their musculature, they looked fantastic – and I wasn’t in a rush to tell them otherwise…”
