"Can you give me one more night?" Eddie looks up at him, his brown eyes shining with unshed tears. "Please?"

He knows he shouldn't. He needs to be strong and say tell him, "I'm sorry, but no."

But Steve has never been a strong man when it comes to Eddie Munson.

So he drops his coat on the bedside chair that was occupied by Wayne fifteen minutes ago until he wandered down to the cafeteria for another cup of coffee (Steve could've gotten him one from the machine in the nurse's station—it would've been free, at least) and plops down in the other one with a bone deep sigh.

"Someone's gotta go home and check on Ozzy," he tells him softly, reaching forward to brush Eddie's hair out of his eyes.

Those gorgeous brown eyes that are more alive and bright tonight, though a little unfocused from the pain meds they've got him on, than they were when the ambulance brought him in ten days ago, barely conscious on the gurney but still pleading for his husband.

Steve had never been so terrified in his life.

"Wayne can stop by on his way to work," Eddie says, taking Steve's hand and lacing their fingers together. "Please, Stevie."

Eddie's quiet voice and his pleading eyes have Steve's heart breaking all over again. Eddie's begged him to stay every single night since waking up after his surgery, scared to be alone even for a second.

Steve knows about Eddie's childhood fear of hospitals, but Eddie confided in him on the third night of recovery, still high and loopy on morphine–

"It's not hospitals themselves," he'd muttered. His eyes were closed and his heart monitor was so steady Steve thought he'd fallen asleep.

"Yeah?"

Any free time Steve had, whether he was on his breaks or clocked out, he spent it at Eddie's bedside.

Eddie's eyes briefly opened and his gaze slid over to Steve. "s'the dying alone part that I'm afraid of."

Steve had choked on a sob, already fragile from the very real fact that Eddie had almost died, and made the promise that that was never going to happen.

"You're being discharged tomorrow," Steve says, pressing a kiss to their hands. "This is the last night you have to spend in this place, I promise. You get to sleep in our bed with me beside you and Ozzy tucked behind your knees, and you're never going to look at another motorcycle ever again."

But he doesn't tell him no.

Instead, he makes sure Eddie is as comfortable as he can be without being in pain and carefully climbs into the bed beside him. Wayne comes back and finds them curled around each other and sharing soft kisses between equally soft words.

It be so funny if they took Joan to soccer game and put her either in the team colour or a cheerleading outfit.

Great minds think alike because I was just thinking that we having checked in with Joan in a while so this problem is perfect.

Every Saturday for over a month now, Joan has watched the humans and Ozzy leave the house in the morning and come back hours later loud, smelly, and energized. She does not have a problem with this per se but if she had eyebrows, she’d raise one of them. She would raise the other when they’re all too tired to play with her for too long after they come back.

So, Joan makes a decision.

When the next Saturday rolls around and Steve is digging around in the drier for his jersey, she makes her case known. She whines. She meows. She gets in the way of every step. She commits a drive-by biting. She even gets in the storage closet in the hallway and knocks over the dreaded cat stroller so it falls into the hallway.

She makes it very clear. She wants to go.

Eddie coos at her, “Awe, baby, she feels left out. Let’s take her.”

“Ed, it’s hot outside,” Steve replies, gesturing to Joan. She rubs her head against his leg. “She’s gray.”

“Steve, don’t be racist.”

“I’m not being – how is that –“ Steve sputters and then rambles on about tiny bodies, and fur, and overheating in the sun, but Joan already knows she got her way. Steve can’t say no to Eddie and he can’t say no to her either. Plus, she always gets her way.

Her way is the right way.

Steve sighs and gives in, “But if she gets too hot, you have to take her home.”

As a reward for Steve and Eddie’s good decision-making, Joan helps them get ready to leave. She wiggles her way into the cabinet with the first-aid kit and pulls out bandaids. She leaves them inside Steve’s cleats. He says thank you when he finds them.

Ozzy huffs from where he’s laying in his dog bed.

Joan purrs when Steve pets her head.

Since Eddie disappeared down into his studio the moment Steve agreed to let her come, Joan continues ‘helping Steve.’ Mainly, she cleans up (eats) all the scraps of lunchmeat he drops when making sandwiches for him, Eddie, Robin, and Nancy.

Eddie immerges from the studio ten minutes before they’re supposed to leave with a hastily sewed shirt made for a cat. It’s made out of the soft material of the cheer squad t-shirts he made for the other team members’ partners. He presents it first to Steve and then holds it out to Joan like, “Ta-dah.”

Joan sniffs the fabric – it smells like Eddie – and Steve is just like, “Why did you make that?”

“Because Joan’s got to represent, Stevie. We’re a jock family now and jocks wear their team colors,” Eddie insists, grin getting bigger when Steve rolls his eyes at him. “Everybody else is wearing team colors. Even Ozzy. See.”

He gestures to the pin attached to his yellow service dog vest that says ‘#1 Steve Harrington Defender.’ It’s right next to a patch that says ‘If You Pet Me, You Are A Part Of The Problem’ which is… “That’s new.”

“Yeah, I’m solving all the world’s problems today, baby,” He grins. “Isn’t that right, Joan?”

She hisses at the shirt.

Steve doesn't really have any issues with his neighbors. None of them are that loud at night or like to throw parties, so everything else he can kind of deal with. He's met a few of them and they seem great, but he wouldn't consider any of them friends.

There's one neighbor though he's never met, but that doesn't mean he doesn't know him. It's the one who lives across from him. From what Steve can hear from the hall, the guy works nights and sleeps most of the day. After sometimes lighting a joint that can make the hallway smell like weed for a little while, but Steve could care less about that.

He sometimes hears music pouring out of the apartment and singing when he's out in the hallway. Hard not to when the walls are so thin, but it's never when he's asleep, and honestly it's kind of nice. He thinks the guy's pretty good honestly and wonders if he's in a band or just keeps it all in his apartment.

The one thing he definitely knows about this guy who lives across from him though, is that he has a cat. A very vocal one. Every morning when he comes home from work, Steve will hear the door open and the cat will meow, loud. Only to be followed by "Well hello to you too, Ozzy," or something of the sort.

It's funny really, a little routine. It's every time, every single morning, sometimes even at night too. And when Steve's in the hall, sometimes the cat will be meowing for a while and then he hears a very grumpy voice tell Ozzy that he will be fed soon.

Today is the same. The guy comes home, says hello to his cat, and the door shuts. Only this time, Steve keeps hearing the meowing. It takes a few minutes, but then he hears the guy frantically calling out for his cat, and the cat calling back to him hopelessly. It has to have gotten into the hall.

Steve opens his door to find the cat, Ozzy, pacing in front of the door, meowing its head off while the guy is rooting around in his house. He walks over and knocks on the door, planning on leaving after doing so. But then the cat starts to purr and rub against his legs, so he just stands there and lets it happen.

The door opens and Steve's greeted by a guy he guesses is around his age with curly hair that meets his shoulders.

"Can I help you?" he asks while the cat meows at Steve's feet. "Holy shit, Ozzy. You little fucker, get inside."

Steve laughs as Ozzy struts back into the apartment while meowing loudly and giving Eddie the stink eye.

"Thank you so much, I didn't see him get out. He didn't, like, scratch you or anything?"

"No, not at all. Does he do that?"

Eddie sighs. "Yeah, to new people especially so I'm surprised he didn't do it to you. Guess you won him over. I'm Eddie, by the way." Eddie sticks his hand out and Steve gives it a shake.

"Steve, I live across from you."

"Oh, you just moved in last month. Sorry if I'm loud sometimes, I play guitar in a band so it can get a little loud sometimes."

He shrugs. "I don't mind. I've heard you though, you're good."

"Think so?" Ozzy meows from inside the apartment again. "Jesus Christ you're needy. I will feed you in a second. You should be happy, I'm socializing."

Steve laughs again while the cat responds. "He really seems like he needs food."

"He acts like I've never fed him a day in his life. You can come in if you want, not to be presumptuous or anything. It just might be nice to get to know one of my neighbors, and Ozzy already likes you so there's that."

"Yeah, sure. Why not."

Ozzy Woodchuck - Ozzy Woodchuck is fozzie bear's whatnot counterpart, he is the comedic Woodchuck of the Show And his jokes often suck and he often uses honks for entertainment of other whatnots. His headcanon voice actor is Doug Giorgis, And his voice claim is Bobby zilch from psychonauts.
