Eurovision Fact #467:

Lithuania's representives for 2021, The Roop, garnered popularity in their country by participating in Lithuania's national final for Eurovision Pabandom iš naujo! in 2018.

That year, the band earned a respectable 3rd place. But, upon their return to the contest in 2020, they placed first, and managed to do so again in 2021 after the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest was cancelled.

At Eurovision, the group finished 4th in their semi-final and 8th overall.

National final season always means that we lose some fantastic songs that won’t ever get to grace to the big ESC stage, but I can memorialize all the other tracks I love here. This list contains the songs that got away, as well as some of the guilty pleasures, and songs I simply enjoy listening to, from the NF season of 2023.

Note that this is my personal taste, so I might be missing something you jive with. Songs are arranged by flow, not in a ranking. Some videos I likely will have to replace with another upload at some point. I went with studio recordings to be consistent (barring the bonus track).

This playlist is in no way meant to put down the actual winners.

Eurovision 2022: Final Thoughts

Okay I grabbed some dinner and took some time away to recollect my thoughts about this season:

- I’m delighted to see Ukraine win. Stefania was my favourite out of the Vidbir selection and it immediately became my number one when it was selected to go to Turin. Very curious now to see where we’re going next year.

- All of the jokes aside, I’m very happy that Sam brought a redemption arc for the UK to give them a second place finish. Space Man is a great track so I hope the UK is proud of him.

- Also very proud for Spain for the same reasons. SloMo was one of my favourite songs this year and was my number three.

- Thank you televote for giving Moldova the points it rightfully deserved. You guys said “fuck ballads” and I love you for it.

- I’m glad to see Serbia was well-received by both the juries and the public. They were a fandom favourite going in but was worried that the message of the song would get lost on the casual viewers but thankfully that didn’t happen tonight.

- I wish Estonia and Lithuania were higher but 13th and 14th place are not bad spots to be in. I hope people won’t be discouraged in sending more Lithuanian songs to Pabandom iš Naujo due to Monika’s results. Lithuanian is a lovely language that we need to hear more of in Eurovision!

- Really shocked that France got so few points considering how well it was received online. I guess it just didn’t clicked with the people at home.

- I checked out the semi results and was shocked to find out that Latvia had more points from the juries (39 points) than the televote (19 points). I figured it was going to be the other way around. I wonder if people thought were a safe qualifier so they voted for other countries instead. Or maybe it could be that most of their fanbase couldn’t vote in their semi. Either way, I think that was the most surprising part of the results so far for me. Still robbed though. I hope they’ll come back in a few years and bring in a big result like Sunstroke Project did when they returned in 2017.

Meet the Liverpool 2023 Eurovision Artiats

Monika Linkytė from Lithuania 🇱🇹

It could be second time lucky for Monika Linkytė, as she had previously competed at Eurovision in 2015 alongside Vaidas Baumila with the song 'This Time'.

This year the singer earned herself another opportunity through Lithuania’s national selection show, Pabandom Iš Naujo!, and brings soaring melodies to the Contest with her new entry Stay.

The song is grounded in local folklore, with the lyrics ‘Čiūto Tūto’ often used in Lithuanian folk dances as magical incantations.

Music has been a part of Monika’s life since childhood, and from the moment she first laid her fingers on the piano keys, it became clear to her that music would be a constant companion in her life.

Croatia: Dora 2023

The winner is excellent. It's a great show and catchy song. And literally everything - every word, the costumes, and so on - seems to have one or more deeper meanings. It's protest art.

The rest were utterly overshadowed by the winner. Might check out Harmonija Disonance because I enjoy folk music.

Lithuania: Pabandom iš naujo 2023

Winner is kinda boring imo.

Agree with Justė Kraujelytė we need more fun and her song was fun. Antikvariniai Kašpirovskio dantys was also fun but a lot more obnoxious. Beatrich also was ok. And I also kinda enjoyed Joseph June's song.

Italy: Sanremo 2023

Winner is a bit meh. Good voice though.

Mr Rain with his choir of lil kids gets an automatic mention because cute kids! Rosa Chemical was alright and caused some chaos at the show apparently.

The rest didn't really grab me tbh. Some others had good voices but overall meh.
