I had no idea you created Packwars! It’s one of my favorite formats because it’s a quick way to play without building decks and it’s fun to see that weird uncommon turn into an MVP because there’s nothing else overpowering the game.

Here’s the slightly larger story. I used to play Magic at the Costa Mesa Women’s Center. Back in the day, it was the hub of serious Magic play in Southern California.

One of the formats that got played was called Grandmasters. You were given a starter deck (Magic originally was sold in 60-card deck boxes in addition to 15-card packs. The Starters came with land, so you could play out of the box.) you then built a 40-card deck and played a match.

The winner got the loser’s cards and then built a new deck out of all the cards, now a minimum 60-card deck. That kept happening until there was one winner. Grandmasters were normally eight players, but we had events with larger groups. (I think 32 was the biggest I ever played.)

Henry Stern and I both loved Grandmaster. The problem was it was often hard to get eight people to play. You only got the cards if you won, so if you weren’t particularly good at the format, it wasn’t the greatest deal (versus other limited formats where you always got to keep the cards).

So Henry and I came up with a cheaper way to play. Instead of starting with a starter deck, you started with a booster. Because there wasn’t enough lands in booster packs (there wasn’t even a guaranteed slot yet), we shuffled in three of each basic land.

I ended up enjoying Minimasters even more than Grandmasters as it forced you to play with cards you’d never normally play. (Because you only played a 40-card deck in the first round of Grandmasters, you tended to cut the worst cards.)

I enjoyed it so much, I asked Kathryn Haines, the then editor of The Duelist, if I could write an article about it. She said sure. It caught on and has been a popular format ever since.

I haven’t really been talking about MTG because I haven’t played much of it. But today, after preordering them my box of jumpstart arrived. And, honestly, it has been the most fun I’ve ever had opening standard cards in a long time. It feels like Draft without the chance to just whiff, or being fucked by playing against people who might be bad players but good drafters. I really hope Jumpstart keeps going with each new set because I would 100% keep buying it.

And I think that sort of sums up my experience with MTG atm. While I love the game, most of the ways to play the game centre on a lot of experience which itself requires money to acquire. Like, EDH, Limited, Standard and other constructed formats either require a lot of money to buy cards, requires money to gain the experience to effectively build decks, or both. While Jumpstart feels like constructed packwars and that is awesome. And each deck is slightly different and even if you do open a bunch of jump commons and uncommons, they feel important for that game. I would actually die if Jumpstart became the premier way to open packs because I would be so much more excited for each new standard set and Jumpstart experience.
