There isn't a minimum when it comes to pain and suffering. 

You don't have to hit a certain amount or for for it to feel a certain way to qualify for something.

How you feel is completely valid no matter what anyone else says or some text book definition.

You don't have to keep it to yourself and go through your experience alone.

You don't have to outwardly show signs of distress to seek help.

You don't have to feel bad comparing your experience to another.

You aren't weak for feeling this way and people don't think less of you.

You are a human being.

You're understandably allowed to seek a way to move through it all.

You are loved beautiful soul.

Pain and Glory (2019)

There’s nothing like a small, intimate drama like Pain and Glory to reinvigorate your spirits and remind you why you go see movies. Pedro Almodóvar has written and directed one of the best films of the year.

Salvador Mallo (Antonio Banderas) is a film director and screenwriter crippled by back pain and migraines. To escape the unfulfilled present, he often reminisces of his childhood years spent with his impoverished mother (Penelope Cruz) and father (Raúl Arévalo). He has just gotten word that his film, Sabor, is being re-released to an audience who now considers it a classic. For the Q&A that will accompany the screening, he reaches out to the film’s star, Alberto Crespo (Asier Etxeandia), whom he hasn't spoken to in 30 years.

Told from Salvador’s perspective (so you’ll have to read a lot of Spanish subtitles), the story frequently rewinds back to those simple days, living in his parents' whitewashed cave house and tutoring a local laborer (César Vicente). You eagerly devour these memories. They’re so spot-on you know without having to do any research that what’s portrayed here is pulled from real-life. You're in love when we suddenly return to the present. The wide-eyed and optimistic boy has completely disappeared, transformed into a director who can't direct and a writer who can't write. It’s a sad state but the film is never heavy. Despite where you think things might be headed, this is a joyous journey that celebrates the little things. Treasured memories are vividly described by Salvador in conversation and the words crackle with passion. The usual rule of “show, don’t tell” doesn’t apply because the performance by the cast, and particularly Antonio Banderas are so good. You don't want to leave them but eventually, of course, it does and what do you know? We’re back in that simple cave. You suddenly remember what you forgot you were missing: the nostalgic scenes between the boy and his family. Very few people will have lived the same kind of life as Salvador but the emotions are spot-on. You mentally transplant the location and the people for the ghosts that live in your memories. It’s like Almodóvar snuck into your brain and made this movie for you.

With no obvious crisis to overcome and no easy solution to the ails that pain Salvador, you might find yourself wondering where the story is headed. Don’t worry about it. Enjoy the camerawork, the dialogue, the performances, and the emotions while they last. Like Salvador’s simple days, it’s only a matter of time before they fade away. In the end, everything comes together so perfectly it elevates the picture from “great” to “masterful”. That last brush stroke is perfect in every way. Pedro Almodovar, I think, is the modern-day Francois Truffaut. That is to say, his affection for the art of cinema is immediate regardless of when you start watching his work. His Oscar-nominated “Pain and Glory,” with a career performance by Antonio Banderas, is what led to my recent run of getting in touch with the Spanish wild man’s work. Since then I’ve finally watched “All About My Mother” and “Broken Embraces” (not pictured), and what stands out is his blending of tones, his mixing of genres, and his love of women. His female characters are some of the richest in film, and as with Banderas, he has directed Penelope Cruz to her best work over the years, as well. The Oscar's have divided me ever since I was old enough to have my own opinions on movies, actors, all the things included on making a movie. But this year, boy am I torn.

When it comes to best actor, my heart really aches when I decide to pick one. Adam Driver's performance was raw, completely truthfull and scaringly emotional. Joaquin Phoenix literally BECAME the Joker, in an astounding performance, not only when it comes to physical but also mental aspects of the character. Antonio Banderas was incredibly sensitive, and I believe that he spoke to all of us during Almodóvar's beautiful movie. Jonathan Pryce humanized a man who we, many times, can forget that is still a human being, and his soul touching performance alongside Sir Anthony Hopkins is incredible. As for Leonardo DiCaprio's performance, I believe it's the weakest of the bunch. He is a brilliant actor, as he proved many times before, and to give him well deserved credit, he was the best thing that existed in Tarantino's very awaited and unfortunately quite blasé film.

If I was going to write about every single category, we'd be here for an entire day. But there are two actors I believe were neglected.

The first one is Adam Sandler. His movie was a ground breaking performance in his career, showing sides of him that were obscured by his comedy - somewhat repetitive after so many stories.

The second one is the heartbreaking Roman Griffin Davis, the young Jojo in Taika Waititi's brilliant movie. He makes us laugh, he makes us cry, and most importantly, he makes us realize that growing up is an immensly painful process. The destruction of our heroes, and the strength to say no to our role models come to us through hard, but necessary means.

Chorus Line cuenta con una excelente banda en directo que bajo el foso, sabe elevarse por todo el patio de butacas desbordando su buen hacer. Quince músicos hacen bailar al compás a otros 26 bailarines que con cadencia, equilibrio y acertadamente seducen a un público entregado por el espíritu de Antonio Banderas. Chorus Line, es un musical sin la espectacularidad que quizás muchos esperaban, no cuenta con los destellos y brillos que nos hagan asombrarnos y deslúmbranos, pero si cuenta con un reparto de gente con muchas ganas.
