These exotic figures from 18th century Neapolitan nativity scenes represent the aristocracy and the world beyond Naples in contrast to the local people. In the context of Christian mythology about the birth of Jesus, they represent gentiles (non-Jews) and convey the message that Jesus would be the savior not only of the Jews (or Christians), but of the entire world.

Achilles pursues Troilus and Polyxena. Exterior of an Attic black-figure kylix (drinking cup) in the shape of a Siana cup, attributed to the C* Painter; ca. 575 BCE. Now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
*Short for "Corinthianizing," due to the influence of Corinthian art on his style.

In this carefully-planned entrance hall, interesting contrasts of texture all link up. The closely woven coir matting blends in with the terracotta painted walls, the silky, skin-covered upholstered stools tone with the dark, chunky, wooden bannisters, and the thick weave of the sofa looks good against the smooth cotton of the Roman shade.

I was inspired by @asklepiad-apollon's post about Greek alphabet divination and decided to make myself some runes. The originals were usually written on ostraka so I went for a pottery-inspired design.

The Neapolitan presepe (nativity scene) of the 18th century depicted the everyday life of the people with the birth Jesus in the background, unlike the Christmas mangers popular in Germany and Austria that put the nativity front and center. The figures shown here depict merchants, shoppers, innkeepers, patrons, and all types of food that would be seen in a marketplace or tavern. These high-quality figures have expressive faces that hint at their personalities.
