My rainy day painting system. I sit down underneath the hatchback door with all my paint gear and am protected from the rain unless it’s really windy. This is a Toyota matrix, but other hatchbacks and SUVs will work as well. But when I tried it in a rented SUV, my feet were not able to touch the ground. Here you can see I have an old floormat, which I keep in my car. Usually I use it if I’m standing on concrete to make it a little bit softer, but here it worked so I didn’t have to leave my feet in the mud. #pleinairpainting #paintingintherain #raindaypainting #allweatherpainters #sheepscotbay #maineartgallerywiscasset

Bucket list- paint Sinawava when the falls are running. I didn’t care that it was raining - had to try. That is as far is I could get paint to work and my palette was a swimming pool. Many, many years ago I took a group painting along the causeway in Chatham that goes to Morris Island. Rain was predicted but we thought we’d beat it. We did not. The first was being painted as it began to rain and you can see the raindrops in the painting. Check out the close up. We ran for our cars where we painted the rest. Lightening was flashing everywhere but especially over the lighthouse. We painted like crazy people and got the dark clouds as the front moved away, etc. I’ve told students this story but had not seen these sketches in years. That was a day to remember!
