Me?? Starting a new exploratory comic ahead of the final season when I already have two others I'm actively working on and one I've had to temporarily shelve because they were getting mixed up in my head??? Egads.

Anyway this is just a short silly fanfic-in-comic-form that I'm playing with dfkjhk. 3 more pages already on Patreon!

ID: 1. Wide blue-toned panel with a close up of a city sidewalk at night, showing Nandor and Guillermo's legs from mid-calf down as they walk along it. Guillermo is in front, wearing tight chinos and pointed shoes, jauntily swinging his legs as he hums to himself. Nandor, in his usual boots and long cape, trails closely behind. He says, as if continuing an earlier conversation, 'Then what are we now, if not master and familiar?' 2. Shoulders up of Guillermo from the front, Nandor a few steps behind. The city behind them is awash with blue and streaked with streetlights. Guillermo, wearing a dark peacoat over a dress shirt, is clearly drunk, flushed and grinning as he watches his feet dance along the sidewalk, shoulders swaying. He responds happily, 'Well, you're my best friend!' Nandor frowns slightly, unsure. 3. Repeat. Guillermo rolls his head to aim a teasing grin over his shoulder, pointing at Nandor as he sings, 'And I'm yoursss~' Nandor pulls himself forward to hover right behind Guillermo's shoulder and attempts an imperious expression, flustered. He retorts, 'If only for lack of a better term!' Guillermo immediately shoots back, 'I am!' 4. Repeat. Guillermo continues walking unsteadily forward, closer to the viewer, his flushed and grinning face taking up the left side of the frame from nose to chest. He adds, giggling, 'At least for the next 50-ish years!' Behind him, Nandor has stopped, blinking in surprise as he takes this in, his hands twiddling together at his chest. 5. The panel grows smaller, darker, crowding in on Nandor, the only one left in it, as he furrows his brow and stares uncertainly at the ground, shoulders slumped. Offscreen, Guillermo drunkenly shouts, 'Mas-' he interrupts himself with a burp - 'Nandor, the ferry is goooone!' A few more empty blue panels follow, getting thinner and smaller as they go and the night ends. 6. Some time later: Knees up of Nandor sitting on one side of the loveseat in the fancy room, doing a talking head. He is now wearing a studded leather tunic and fur vest and is staring with a deep sadness at the camera, hands folded in his lap. He says, '...I had of course considered that, by remaining human, my new best friend Guillermo would not be around as long as the rest of us. But 50 years?? That is no time at all! I took 22 just mastering the game of pinball! Time is so fleeting...before I know it, he will be gone.' 7. Repeat. Nandor takes a moment of silence and looks down sadly at the empty cushion beside him on the loveseat, hands twisting together in his lap. 8. Repeat, zoom in to chest up, background fading to red as white intensity lines halo around Nandor's head. He sits straight up and faces the viewer, chin up, a new confidence in his furrowed brow and straight shoulders. He announces, 'I have to turn him.' /end ID

I've realised that the thing I love most about the new popular queer media (and for this I'll use as an example wwdits, good omens and ofmd), is the fact that the difficulties these characters are dealing with aren't connected to their sexuality. The problems don't stem from their queer sexuality. They are not being punished for being queer.

Crowley and Aziraphale's relationship isn't forbidden because they aren't a cishet couple. It's forbidden because they are both victims of an opressive and unjust system (heaven) who's afraid of their combined power which is a direct result of their love for one another.

Guillermo and Nandor's relationship is so nuanced and complicated. There's lots of things to unpack that have been piled up for more than a decade, but again their queer sexualities aren't the problem. Same goes for the rest of the vampires, who are also queer.

Sure, in Stede's case he has to deal with queer trauma, toxic masculinity and the realisation that he's gay, and therefore doesn't conform to the ideal archetype of the straight, masculine man with the heterosexual family. But after realising that and coming out to Mary, the show isn't really about ‘oh, look how difficult it is to be queer, poor guys'. Like Con O'Neil said in a panel, the obstacle here isn't that we have two men who are in love. The difficult thing is to let yourself be in love and become vulnerable.

Both Stede and Ed are dealing with their own trauma, which has affected how they see themselves and by extension their relationships with other people. They are dealing with self doubt, even self loathing, and the belief that they aren't good enough or that they don't deserve love. However, none of that is because they are queer. Being queer sure isn't easy (especially then) but it's not the source of their pain and I fucking love that.

I'm all about the exploration of sexuality, dealing with internalised homophobia and transphobia, coming out etc, and that's why we have series like Heartstopper. But it's still so fucking refreshing to see queerness not being depicted as a ‘big deal’, but rather one of the many aspects of one's self.

That being said, I love being queer and fucking love my insane little queer characters.

Ok strap in for a stupid long Guillermo meta that made way more sense on discord. We're so fucking back (spoilers for the WWCITS zine [digital/print, sales end on 8/5!] and the sdcc panel)

I've been struggling to pin down exactly what Guillermo's arc will entail in season 6 from what we've gotten so far, but leave it to my iwtv-brainrotted brain to suddenly connect the dots while wondering what happened to Guillermo's Armand obsession.

In the WWCITS zine, Paul Simms mentions that this season Guillermo is heavily involved in a fandom for a procedural cable drama meant for dads. I figured this was a strange departure from his iwtv obsession, until I realized: he's romanticizing humanity the same way he did with vampirism, as a coping mechanism for the events of season 5. He's doing his usual response of running away and doing the exact opposite of what failed. Him working in an office, moving out, neglecting his vampire family the same way he did his human one, all in the name of so-called "self discovery." I'm willing to bet he'll say that all of it "needed to be done" for his "mental health" without being able to actually articulate why or what he actually wants out of it.

Which leads me to my next conclusion: Guillermo's arc isn't actually about self actualization, it's about balance. He's such a clean-cut, all-or-nothing character; only vampirism or only humanity, only good or only evil, only servitude or only independence. But the narrative keeps putting him in situations that require a sense of grayness. Him being a dhampir and a bodyguard (caught between humanity and vampirism), the gray morality of being a familiar, and his push-and-pull dynamic with Nandor. What he really needs isn't to pick a side, but to embrace being in both worlds at the same time.

And I think this season we'll especially see this with the vampires invading his workplace and trying to help him be more human. They want to be a part of that side of his life, just as I think if his human family warmed up to the vampires they would want to be a part of that (side note I really hope we get an episode that brings his family fully into the vampire world and finishes that arc on a good note). He'll try to push them away, try to quit them entirely, only to fail because it's impossible to just abandon that side of him. He needs the vampires just as much as he needs to reconnect with his humanity. There's a balance.

I really do hope they wrap this up satisfyingly in just one season, because it's such a fascinating direction to take his character, but he can be just as stubborn as Nandor in terms of character development. Just don't drag it out too long pleaseeeeeee

Vulture held a What We Do in the Shadows panel with the writers as part of Vulture Festival, and I went because @phasmama nudged me.

Random things:

Season 6 will film in January, so the air date will be around the summer.

S6 will address the question of what does Guillermo want now, since S5 ended with him getting what he wanted and realizing he didn't want it after all.

S6 will feature a new kind of hypnotism, which will probably be in an episode co-written by Zach Dunn, or he came up with the idea (going by a teasing jab of Paul Simms').

A plot that was tossed around in the writers' room was about Nadja trying to fit in and joining a human book club and realizing that it was an excuse to drink wine and nobody actually read the book.

Jeremy Levick and Rajat Suresh originally scripted a lot of options for the hybrid creatures. One that was nixed was a curly-haired mouse that originated from Guillermo's pubic hair.

They talked about Nandermo. I've transcribed that specific part here.

Okay this is amazing. I’m so excited I’m buzzing.

I’m placing the spoiler tag with my thought below

I have so many theories and comments.

1. I’m so glad to have the Guide on this poster. I love her and it’s incredible to see her character journey.

2. I don’t really see a huge change in Colin, but it pretty obvious that everyone here is hypnotized in some way.

3. I know some spoilers, so idk if I can say that. But I have a pretty good guess who is hypnotizing them.

4. The bats. Three bats in the moon and two bats outside of the moon.

I believe the three always stood for “Nandor, Nadja, and Laszlo.” But I think here it represents “Nadja, The Guide, and Laszlo” as I believe they will be more connected to the house this season.

5. While the other bats represent Nandor and Guillermo (yeah, I do believe they mean him here). Since Guillermo will be away from the house and I suspect Nandor will be following him.

6. The house is central in the photo. Will they be abandoning it in the finale? Will they finally discover vampires are real and be chased out of Staten Island?

7. Nandor and Guillermo being framed as a set here, even though supposedly they are not master/familiar anymore….?

8. October 21! That means we get WWDITS for Halloween! Yay!!

If we get a double premiere and a double finale, that takes us to December 16th.

My theory that the finale would be around Election Day is over. 😞 But we will get an episode on election week (possibly episode 4?)

9. The lighting alludes to a spoiler I’m not sure I can speak about.

10. I really want to see bts of this photoshoot.

11. I’ll need to see the trailer before I can say much else.
