Vulture held a What We Do in the Shadows panel with the writers as part of Vulture Festival, and I went because @phasmama nudged me.
Random things:
Season 6 will film in January, so the air date will be around the summer.
S6 will address the question of what does Guillermo want now, since S5 ended with him getting what he wanted and realizing he didn't want it after all.
S6 will feature a new kind of hypnotism, which will probably be in an episode co-written by Zach Dunn, or he came up with the idea (going by a teasing jab of Paul Simms').
A plot that was tossed around in the writers' room was about Nadja trying to fit in and joining a human book club and realizing that it was an excuse to drink wine and nobody actually read the book.
Jeremy Levick and Rajat Suresh originally scripted a lot of options for the hybrid creatures. One that was nixed was a curly-haired mouse that originated from Guillermo's pubic hair.
They talked about Nandermo. I've transcribed that specific part here.

S5E8 "The Roast" thoughts:
Tumblr media
Ok, I watched this episode three times and I'm still smiling. I love when you think and episode is gonna be about something because of its title and then surprise you when its all a misdirection (see also: Succession's "Connor's Wedding").
At first Laszlo's err… state intrigued me, love everyone projecting and imposing their own insecurities (Guillermo's secret, Nadja's hex) as a reason on why he is behaving like that. And of course it's a stupid reason 😭.
"And a flat pepsi for Guillermo". Oh Nandor, that's the worst thing you ever done to Guillermo, that's the worst thing you could do to anyone. And yes, I remember a certain S4 episode.
I screeched like a bird when Colin mentioned dreaming about being a baby under Laszlo's care, not only because I wanted this shit to happen since the past finale, but also I really thought the episode was going on that direction (and also bc its another W for my predictions).
Having said that, LOVED the nonchalance of Nadja and the others when they were like 'no, it wasn't a dream, that totally happened'.
I mentioned it in a separate post: they really had a Sweet Dee in IASIP moment when The Guide gave the roast idea, only to be ignored and then the same idea being stolen by a dude who is celebrated.
Seanie's poor brain it should be soup at this point, we don't know if he can hazily remember the event like it happened before.
What can I remember is his line after Nadja's roast because it was one of the biggest laughs for me: "Women CAN be funny!" I fucking loved it so much, it's the perfect condescending shit straight men say all the time, even when they're trying to be complementary to you they can't stop being garbage. It was a simple line but Anthony nailed the delivery and timing. Seriously, rewatch that part.
At first I was confused why all the jokes were so mid, but shortly I realized this episode wasn't about the roast at all, lol.
Just by watching screenshots of other users I noticed that in the scene of Nandor resting his head on Guillermo's shoulder there's a BIG flame between them. LMAO. There's no way that is unintentional.
Good for The Guide being the catalyst of Baron Afanas learning the truth. I was demanding more screen time for her lately, so having some incidence in the main plot goes on the plus column.
The other guests present at the roast being shocked at the knowledge of Guillermo killing vampires surprised me; I always assumed Guillermo being a familiar/slayer was a known fact in the vampire community after his very public massacre at the Théâtre des Vampires.
Fuck yeah when I realized this is a Doug Jones spotlight episode, I just fuckin ahgdjkaksdf, love him, perfect, no notes.
The Baron being terrifying!! Guillermo was seriously scared for the others and he barely tried to show off his Van Helsing abilities.
Nandor and Nadja begging the Baron to not hurt Guillermo!! 😭 Them being dragged while grabbing the cape!! 😭 They're spiritual siblings to me!! 😭😭
They really reminded me a little bro and sis begging their mom to not hit their beloved older brother with the chancla for talking back or something.
I fell for the two fake-outs with the sack lol I'm so gullible when it comes to vampires I guess.
NANDOR PAINFUL SOUNDS (MOANS???) WHEN HE BELIEVED HE WAS IN FRONT OF GUILLERMO'S INERT BODY. IT WAS SAD BUT ALSO A LITTLE HORNY!!!
"At least he died doing what he loved: beating off in the toolshed."
A wonderful small detail: After Laszlo opened fake Guillermo with the knife he cleaned his hands on The Guide's dress.
Idc if you think its dark, the whole 'Nandor will kill you and then kill himself' bit becoming a recurring joke it's peak writing.
I wish I can say something more serious about Baron Afanas' sadness over how boring his life is now. But I just keep thinking that the way he talks about his homelife with The Sire and the Hellhound sounds exactly when a dude has a middle life crisis and suddenly he doesn't enjoy his marriage anymore. They're husbands!! And I loved how cunty he looked at the end all half-charred (see posted gif) Queen!
Now, the Nandermo of it all: What more can I say than incoherent screaming and foaming from the mouth? Episodes 8 are all about them again!! Nandor on the window looking all cliched melancholic heroine of a romance novel?? How relieved he was when he found him in the coffin??? Him still remembering Guillermo's card word for word???!! Knowing that this toxic dark sided devotion goes both ways???!!! Borrowing the words of Fleabag: THIS IS A LOVE STORY.
Seriously, I know all these soft Nandor moments are here so the heartbreak when he learns about Guillermo being turned it's even bigger. But still denying that there is a romantic undertone between these two it's just being purposely adamant at this point (i'm looking at you wwdits reddit). Even if nothing explicitly romantic happens on screen, just by watching these moments, I know, we know.
Now, go listen to the ending song again. You will not regret it.

Just thinking about how like, when I was a teenager, the gayest show we had was Merlin, which was somehow super gay and also incredibly homophobic.
But now y’all teens have your pick of queer characters. Soft gay teenagers? Check. Gay royalty? Check. Gay pirates? Check. Gay vampires? Check. Gay angels and demons? Check.
It’s a damn LGBT smorgasbord out there.

just in case anyone who can't read Farsi is wondering, it's written in here that his height is 193 cm and he weighs 90 kg. as for his name, it's "Nader" here (which honestly makes more sense because it's an actual name). so basically it says "Nader the relentless". and this passport (I'm assuming it's a passport?) was issued on 17th of Dec 1920.

nandor immediately knowing it was his van helsing blood fighting the vampire blood. nandor knowing guillermo drinking human blood would be what fully turned him. nandor knowing that guillermo wasn’t ready to kill people and refusing to turn him because of it. nandor inventing a ceremony so guillermo could renounce his vampirism. nandor killing derek when he knew guillermo couldn’t. nandor keeping guillermo’s glasses. nandor putting his hand on guillermo’s shoulder to comfort him.

hypnotized guillermo in 6x03: I've always fantasized about being one. A vampire, that is. When I was little, I begged my mom for a cape. She didn't have the money for it, but somehow, she found a way of making one. And I put that cape on, and I just fantasized about what it would be like to fly all over the world, no one picking on you, live forever … I was a pretty shy kid, so I didn't have a lot of friends. But I'm sure you can understand that? nandor: Not really. I was rich and a jock … but I can imagine. Must have been very, um … hard.
nandor in 6x10: [proposes an unbreakable alliance of hunting bullies together and says that's the reason they were brought together, not vampirism]
nandor at the end of 6x10 inviting guillermo back into the house: first on the agenda, let's talk capes.
nandor in 6x11: *buys guillermo a cape*
or: it was in this most recent rewatch of 6x03 that i realized that nandor's superhero proposal, while very random on the surface, is actually about him trying to give guillermo his lifelong dream of what it would feel like to be a vampire, since actually being a vampire didn't fulfill it.

God the current TV landscape has completely destroyed audiences ability to wait for developments and to accept suspense.
"Why hasn't this couple gotten together yet??" -> it's a slow burn, it takes time
"Why is nothing resolved by the end of the season??" -> sometimes, things have to get worse before they can get better, it takes time.
The best stories take their time because instant satisfaction is not good for storytelling. Rushing things is how you end up with the finale of game of thrones, and no one wants to end up like the finale of game of thrones

jsyk, there was an actual sincere closing line that condensed the thesis statement for the whole show and tied up the emotional arcs of the characters for the finale.
it was said in season 5's episode, The Roast:

S5E5 "Local News" thoughts
Vampires being scared of the dumbest shit and making a situation worse than actually is ("Brain Scramblies", "The Curse") its one my favorites recurring plots.
This one doesn't top "The Curse", but it's not a fair comparison considering S2E4 is probably one of the best episodes this show have ever made.
LOVE LOVE LOVE that Guillermo is so caught up in his own drama that he forgets his mother's literal birthday!! I also love when the show remind us that he can be selfish and scummy and not the poor innocent angel some of yall wanted him to be for whatever reason.
I repeat my love for Colin making all these traps to defend their lives. It's so refreshing seeing him being part of the group and not the typical "the vampires are crazy and Colin rolls his eyes at their stupidity".
🚨🚨🚨GUILLERMO SINGING THE FEMALE PART OF "MI CUCU" THIS IS A LATINOS ONLY EVENT, GRINGOS GO HOME!!!🚨🚨🚨
Guillermo's mom with her best intentions placing the crucifix necklace on him who cant tell her how much it hurts: something something catholic son who was afraid of coming out for 30 years and now he has another (worse) secret that he's afraid to share something something.
I miss when Laszlo and Nadja were always on the same page. Saying that I NEED to see better pics of Laszlo's plans he had scattered all over the room.
Biggest laugh of the night: The dolly suddenly having blonde hair too (i have the stupidest sense of humor).
One-sided Guidja real.
So Nandor IS upset at Guillermo not being there to prevent him of doing stupid shit. The smallest nandermo crumb so I can't die of hunger.
I love that the Guide had tv lady as a snack, one win for my lesbian loser.
Here's the thing: I don't feel that bad for Guillermo. Honey, you wanted this. You chose to become a vampire. You actively seek it. Even your "friend" with +500 years of vampiric experience told you it isn't that great of an existence but you ignored it and continued to wanting this and rushed behind the back of your friends and family to become one. So… reap, sow, etc, etc.
I miss his cool vampire slayer era, this season his role has been mostly "being anxious".
I know its tv budget, but those CGI traps and balls of fire looked so bad 😭
Anyway, where's the Djinn??

wait. hold it. what if... hear me out, think of this concept. what if all those times guillermo was trying to get a hug from nandor was simply because he was so used to getting that kind of affection when the cameras were off? so all those times guillermo attempted to hug nandor, nandor would have hug him in return if the cameras hadn't been present... and this is one of those "other things"

This is probably an unpopular opinion but I actually didn't hate the wwdits finale. Maybe it's because I've never really engaged with the fandom or Nandermo beyond passing interest, but with the way the finale laid out the thesis of the show, I'm not really upset that we never saw any explicit romance between Nador and Guillermo.
To me, the finale made a strong statement that this show was never supposed to be about character growth and development (an admittedly unusual take on storytelling). Instead, it makes a statement about immortality and the inherent cycles that form when you live beyond a human lifespan. You can try to break the cycles, and maybe some things change, but at the end of the day the vampires wear out of date clothes and speak with accents that harken back to their human lives. 6 years is nothing in the lives of the vampires.
Yet, the show also emphasizes that just because these cycles exist, that doesn't negate the value of relationships both new and old. Guillermo is a part of the crew, and is valued even if most of them won't admit it. His impact may not have been able to enact character growth on the hundreds-of-years-old immortals, but he was still able to become a part of the family.
Maybe I'm giving them too much credit, but I actually found it refreshing to be able to compare the pilot and the finale and see that the real changes were in Guillermo's confidence and in his more natural inclusion in the group.
I absolutely understand why many people were pissed at the ending, and I will admit my first thought with the laying-in-bed Nandermo ending was that it was about as respectful as the Sherlock/Moriarty kiss (though I'm not totally sure I still feel that way). But idk, something about this finale just really hit for me.
