Curaçao was under Spanish control between the 16th and 17th centuries, after which it became a Dutch possession. France and Great Britain tried to take it on several occasions but failed.

After the economic downturn of the 1980s, the oil industry left the island, which exacerbated unemployment and general discontent and resulted in emigration to the Netherlands.

Two status referendums have taken place. IN the first one, the option of restructuring the Netherlands Antilles won, while the second referendum resulted in Curaçao becoming an autonomous area within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which retains responsibility for its defense and foreign policy.

Curaçaoans

75.4% of the population is made up by Afro-Curaçaoan or multiracial. 9% of the population is Dutch, and the rest includes other Caribbean and South American people.

The official languages are Dutch, English, and Papiamento. Papiamento is the first language of 81.2% of the population, Dutch of 8%, Spanish of 4%, and English of 2.9%. Christianity is practiced by 90% of Curaçaoans, of which 72.8% are Roman Catholic.

Ron: Papiamento Reserve

Hace cosa de unos 4 meses tuve la oportunidad de ser invitado a una cata a ciegas en casa de un profesor de mi diplomado de ron. En la cata éramos 6 personas, entre los cuales se encontraban 4 sommelier, un consumidor y yo. Durante la cata pudimos probar seis rones distintos y de todos, logré adivinar tres, y casi un cuarto. Este Papiamento Reserve estaba en la cata, pero como no lo había probado…

Zwischen La Romana und Aruba, der ersten der drei ABC- Inseln, liegen 364 Seemeilen (673km), Zeit um anzukommen und zu entspannen. Noch erscheint uns alles sehr unwirklich, nicht nur Urlaub zu haben sondern tatsächlich jetzt in der Karibik herumzuschippern aber so stumpf aufs Wasser gucken, hilft ungemein beim Verinnerlichen 😅

Wissenswertes:

Inseln unter dem Wind nennen wir sie, denn der Wind ist hier wesentlich trockener, als bei den weiter östlich gelegenen Inseln der Karibik, die den feuchten Passatwinden aus dem Nordosten mehr ausgesetzt sind und als Inseln über dem Wind benannt werden. Geläufiger ist der Begriff der Kleinen Antillen, für die drei Inseln, die je nach Lage 25 bis 60 Kilometer vor der Küste Venezuelas liegen. Durch diese Nähe zu Venezuela, spricht ein Teil der Bevölkerung, neben englisch auch spanisch, aber die Hauptsprache heißt Papiamento, wobei Papiamento an sich, schon hauptsächlich aus portugiesisch und spanisch besteht; nur 20 Prozent kommen aus dem Englischen.

Alle drei Inseln gehören, wenn auch in unterschiedlichen politischen Verhältnissen, zum Königreich der Niederlande. (aus www.diereiserei@at)

Und los geht’s mit dem Erholen:

Vormittags werden immer die Ausflugsmöglichkeiten für den nächsten Tag vorgestellt. Spontaner Entschluss: Auruba wird morgen mit dem Cross-Bike erkundet 💪🤪

An den Seetagen ist es üblich, dass ein Lektor zu verschiedensten Themen referiert. Haben anscheinend nicht nur Bade- sondern auch Bildungsurlaub gebucht 😅. Heute hörten wir einen interessanten Vortag zur Geschichte, Tradition, Sehenswürdigkeiten, Sprache etc. der ABC-Inseln. Ureinwohner der dominikanischen Republik sind die Arawak-Indianer:

Papiamento = Geplapper, heute noch Hauptsprache (siehe oben) war ursprünglich die Sprache der Sklaven, das die holländische Sprache der gehobenen Bevölkerung vorbehalten war:

Und wieder kleine Lesestunde, diesmal auf dem Balkon 👍

Es gab zwei kurze Unterbrechungen: Zum einen informierte uns der Kapitän, dass wir die Geschwindigkeit drosseln müssen, weil wir ein Rendezvous mit einem Helikopter haben. Ein medizinischer Notfall muss ausgeflogen werden und alle Passagiere müssen Balkone sowie ähnliche Außenbereiche verlassen, damit wir nicht von Bord wehen…🤔 Zum anderen bekamen wir einen Anruf, dass unsere Crossbikes elektrifiziert wurden 🤩. Nicht die schlechteste Idee👍. Ursprünglich waren alle E-Bike Touren ausgebucht, so dass wir uns mutig für die letzten beiden Plätze der analogen Variante entschieden hatten. Der Anruf über eine zusätzliche Tour kam uns bei zu erwartenden Temperaturen von 30 Grad ohne Schatten, dafür mit kräftiger Brise🤣, sehr entgegen und wir haben sofort auf Urlaubsmodus umgebucht.

Auf dem Weg zum Abendessen sahen wir einen kleinen Menschenauflauf an den Fenstern. Gerade wollten wir uns über die Gaffer, die entgegen den Bitten des Kapitäns fleißig fotografierten, aufregen, als wir die Ursache für den Tumult entdeckten. Wir wurden von einigen kleinen Gruppen von Delphinen begleitet, sozusagen Gaffer aus dem Meer 🐬🤩🤩🤩

Nach dem Abendessen, heute zur Abwechslung asiatisch, gabs im Theatrium die erste Bühnenshow mit Tanz, Artistik und Gesang. Die Qualität war wie schon auf unseren vorherigen AIDA Touren einmal mehr total beeindruckend.
