Boiling Method || Mona & Felix
TIMING: current. LOCATION: mona's apartment. PARTIES: @recoveringdreamer & @thunderstroked SUMMARY: mona sits with felix and learns what is happening with them. CONTENT: emotional abuse.
Mona sat across from Felix, expression pinched. There was something they weren’t telling her, and while she’d never been the type to pry, Felix was her friend, and she refused to let him go through whatever it was he was going through alone. It had taken a long time to build up that kind of friendship with somebody, and the only other person she could think of that fit into that category had been Inge. Felix, however, was not Inge. Felix was a former version of themself, from what Mona could tell, even if she hadn’t known them for very long. Still, she leaned forward, slapping the table that they sat at with her palms.
“You’re lost in thought again. What is it this time?” Perhaps a more aggressive approach was necessary here. Did he think that she did not mean it when she said she cared? If that were the case, she might wring his neck right there and then. There were only a few times that she had come to care for somebody so deeply, and this was one of those times. “Honesty, Felix. Give it.”

They hadn’t been sleeping well. It was hard to sleep in the boiler room, hard to feel safe enough to settle down and close their eyes. Every time they tried, their heart seemed to flutter in their chest. Every footstep in the hall outside the boiler room sent it flying to their throat, sure that someone would barge in and interrupt the small amount of peace they could find. The dripping of the leak in the ceiling grated on them, the quiet sounds of the boiler felt too loud. That was to say nothing of the dirty mattress with the springs that dug into their back or the sheen of sweat that covered them in the heat of the small space.
It had made it hard to focus, hard to remain present in the moment. He felt guilty about it now, pulled from tireless thoughts by Mona’s gentle prompting. Shifting their weight in their seat, they offered her an apologetic smile. “Sorry,” they said quietly. “I’m just — I’ve been really tired lately. But it isn’t anything you have to worry about! Everything’s fine, I just haven’t been sleeping well.” Didn’t Mona have enough going on without his problems being added to the pile? Didn’t everyone? Felix didn’t think they were very important, in the grand scheme of things.

Mona watched Felix, noticing the subtle twitch of his eye, as if backing up his story on just how exhausted he was. It frustrated Mona to no end that he wasn’t being honest with her. Did he feel as though he couldn’t? Was there something that was holding him back from it? Mona had endured two months stuck in fox form, and to be brushed off like this felt a little disheartening, even if Felix didn’t mean for it to come across that way. She knew she shouldn’t be frustrated with them specifically, because it was clear that whatever had happened was out of their hands.
“You’ve been saying that for weeks. That you’re tired. I know tired, and you look it, but what else is happening?” She gave him a stern look before leaning forward, her own hair hanging in her face as she waved a hand in front of theirs. “I cannot help you if you do not tell me what happened.” Mona wasn’t sure what all she could do, but she would try. As much as she hated this town, she had two people in this town she loved more than the frustration she held for Wicked’s Rest.

Felix brought a hand up, pinching the bridge of their nose between two fingers and trying, desperately, not to cry. It was stupid, wasn’t it? How hard it was to keep yourself together when exhaustion clung to you like this. The tiniest things could feel earth-shattering, the smallest slights could burn through you with ease. Felix swallowed, throat tight and chest aching. Part of them wanted to explode, to tell Mona everything, to take comfort in their best friend and just hope that she could help them make things better. But did they deserve that? Did she? Mona did so much for them already; wouldn’t asking for more just be… taking advantage?
Blinking their eyes open, they looked at her and shook their head slightly. “I don’t want… I shouldn’t add things to your plate, Mona. You’ve — You just spent months dealing with… something awful, and scary, and — and I shouldn’t be piling more on. I’m sorry. You deserve a lot better than that. I want to be here for you. You know? I want to help you… readjust, get back to yourself. That’s what I want to do.”

Felix looked like they were going to fall apart, and something in Mona’s chest stirred. It was clear there was something very wrong, but would Felix trust her enough to tell her? Was this not so much about trust, but about something else? Mona forced the feeling of frustration down, strangling it with her heel. She wouldn’t fall prey to those emotions when it came to Felix, because it was clear that there was something bigger at play, something that Mona could not yet see. That Felix was not allowing her to see.
“Felix, if I did not feel like I couldn’t handle it, I would not be asking you. Stop making decisions for me, or for others.” There was a pointed edge to her words and she sighed, getting up from her seat to circle the table and drop into a kneel next to where they sat. Mona placed a hand on his shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze. “I care about you, and as much as I care about myself, what I went through is done. It was solved. It’s fine. I’m here for you now, and it’s clear you need me. If you don’t want to tell me, that’s fine, but please let me find a way to alleviate whatever it is.”

Would it be easier if telling her everything was an option? If the Grit Pit’s cruel contract didn’t tie their tongue into knots, if it didn’t bar them from saying the truth of their employment plainly and clearly, would this feel any simpler? It seemed odd to complain about something they weren’t even allowed to speak about in detail, seemed silly to invent some game of charades to help her guess how their life was being ruined. Three words. Second word: punch. No. Hit. No. Fight. Yes! The mental image might have been laughable if it didn’t ache the way it did.
Felix swallowed as Mona got up, as she circled the table and put a comforting hand on his shoulder. There were a lot of things he couldn’t tell her, but maybe there were some things he could. “I… One of the people I work for is my — um, my ex-boyfriend. And some things — you know, like I told you, I got — I got in trouble at work. And now, I can’t — I’m not…” They trailed off, unable to find the words they wanted. “I want to get away from him,” they said quietly. “From — From all of it. But I can’t. There are — There are reasons why I can’t. And I can’t change them or fix it. I’m just — I’m stuck. And now I’m more stuck than I was before.” It was vague and it hardly made any sense, but Felix had to be careful. They had to dance around the wording of their contract any way that they could. They’d learned that the hard way.

“Men,” Mona hissed bitterly, scrunching her nose. She knew now was probably not the time, so she pursed her lips, nodding as if to encourage Felix to move along in his explanation. “You’re… stuck.” What did that mean? Could it mean something similar to the way she had been stuck, fused to her fox form no matter how many times she had tried to shift out of it? It’d been a flower that had helped her, but she figured that was not the case here. It didn’t seem the same at all.
“Stuck, because…” Had something been said? A contract signed? “Did you write something down? Sign it?” Mona tried to understand, not completely getting why Felix couldn’t tell her outright. It went completely over her head, just why they wouldn’t be able to. “Was it magic?” In this town, that seemed possible. “There has to be some way to break a spell if that’s the case.” After learning that Felix had worked at the Grit Pit, she’d done some research, but hadn’t gotten very far. It was all kept hush hush.

Felix let out a nervous, uncertain half-laugh at her simple statement, looking down at their hands and wringing them together absently. There was no judgment to her tone; he’d known there wouldn’t be, but it was still a relief. They shifted their weight as she asked the inevitable question, shrugging a shoulder and not knowing if they wanted her to drop it or keep pushing. Did it matter, they wondered, if Mona knew the truth if she couldn’t do anything about it? Wouldn’t knowing only serve to make her feel helpless the same way he did? She wouldn’t do what Wyatt and Zane had, wouldn’t go behind their back and make things worse for them because she was trying to make things better. She wouldn’t do what Charlie had, either, wouldn’t get herself into trouble because she wanted to know what Felix wasn’t telling her. He trusted Mona implicitly, but it still felt wrong to drag her into this. The helplessness that came with this situation wasn’t something they’d wish on her.
“It’s… not a spell.” Uncertain frustration tugged at his chest, the contract’s bind wrapping a hand around his throat like a silent warning. “It’s — something else. But it’s not — I can’t break it. The only one who can is…” They trailed off, grimacing. Leo had made it pretty clear that it was up to him whether or not Felix was freed from the Pit, and Felix doubted that he’d ever decide to show mercy. He might have grown bored of being with them, but he never seemed to tire of tormenting them. Felix didn’t know why, didn’t know what they’d done to earn the ire their ex seemed to regard them with. “It’s dangerous to try. Trying is what… got me into trouble.”

Mona watched Felix intently, searching their features as they spoke. “Not a spell,” Mona echoed, finally understanding. It was with the help of their comment afterwards. “A fae bind?” She knew that Felix wouldn’t be able to confirm whether or not she was right, but Mona figured that she was. It all felt so obvious now. Felix’s cut descriptions of their work life, of the way they couldn’t mention too much.
Anger boiled in the pit of Mona’s stomach, an unfamiliar feeling. She flexed her fingers, then leaned up to pull Felix into a hug. “I’m sorry you’ve had to endure this, whether it’s been alone or not.” Surely, if somebody knew, they would have done something to help, right? Or was it not that simple? She recalled the fae bind she had been under and how it had controlled aspects of her life. squared her jaw, getting to her feet. “I understand, but I will try to help you in… other ways.” She offered them a small, encouraging smile. She didn’t know what that looked like yet, but she would brainstorm. She would figure it out. Perhaps she could enlist Inge to help her. “Is there anything you want me to do? That I can do?” She wouldn’t go against their warnings, not because she was self-preserving, but because she knew that by going behind their back, it may result in a harsher sentence.

It was a guessing game, wasn’t it? A quiet back and forth that led to a truth that could only be told in pieces, each new connection bringing as much dread as it did relief. Felix sighed as Mona finally hit the nail on the head, nodding with a small grimace. Was it better to have it out there? There was still so much shame that came with it, like it was a thing he should feel guilty for. Shouldn’t they have known better? Shouldn’t they have been smarter about all of this? How many of their problems would have been solved if they weren’t so stupid?
Mona pulled them into a hug, and Felix wondered how much they actually deserved her sympathy. “It… I mean, it’s my own fault, isn’t it?” Leo was always eager to remind them of this, always quick to point it out. I can’t do anything to you that you didn’t agree to, you know, he’d say, and Felix couldn’t argue with it. Hadn’t they signed that contract with their eyes wide open? Hadn’t they made every promise they’d ever spoken to Leo on purpose? Everything weighing on them was put there by their own clumsy hands. How much of Mona’s understanding did they really deserve? They sighed, looking down at their feet with a shrug. “I… don’t know what can be done,” they admitted. “I know — I know you shouldn’t try to get me out of it. Going to him, trying to talk to him or threaten him or — That’s not what I want.” Mona, they thought, would listen to this plea. They were sure of it.

“No, of course not.” Not all fae were into trickery and word play. Not all of them had dedicated their lives to sending others into a flurry of turmoil and Mona knew that, but it was apparent that whatever fae Felix had run into, that had been their outcome. Mona felt sorry for them, even if she knew they wouldn’t want her to.
“I won’t do that, I would never do that if you ask me not to.” There was a time and place for ignoring what was asked of her, but when it came to fae binds, things became tricky. Things got… convoluted, and the last thing Mona wanted to do was make things worse for Felix. It was clear that things were already terrible, given his new sleeping arrangements. Had that been a part of it, too? Had Felix willingly given another promise? For the sake of themself, or something else? “Do they have something else over you? The fae, I mean. Aside from the promise?” That was perhaps a good place to start– understanding what had happened to get Felix to this point.

Mona didn’t think it was his fault. She wasn’t the first to assure Felix of this, though it never quite seemed true. Wasn’t Felix the one who had made that promise? Hadn’t they done so with their eyes wide open? Maybe they’d had the wrong idea about what it meant, and maybe they wouldn’t have done it if they hadn’t been so sure that they were helping someone they loved, but hadn’t they still signed that contract of their own free will? They shrugged in response to Mona’s reassurances, unable to believe them fully even if they’d never insult their friend by accusing her of dishonesty.
“Thank you.” This assurance did bring relief with it. The last thing Felix wanted was for Mona to get into trouble. They didn’t want to get into any more trouble, either, but that was a far more selfish desire. If they got into trouble, they could handle it. If Mona got tied up in all this? Felix didn’t think they’d be able to forgive themself. He shrugged at her question, throat feeling tight. “He… knows me very well. Knows what to… use against me, I guess. He got me to, um, thank him so he could keep me in the boiler room. Because he — My friends went to him. They were trying to help me, but they just… pissed him off. And he didn’t hurt them, and he said I should thank him for that. I didn’t want him to… change his mind, you know? So I — I gave him what he wanted. He’s good at getting what he wants.” The confession made them feel small, but they found they didn’t fear judgment for it. Not from Mona.

Mona refused to become agitated with Felix. His delicate nature and reluctance to believe in himself had been a point of contention before, but at this time, it was impossible to lay in on him about those things. She wanted to believe in him in the way he needed, and perhaps that was to say nothing at all, and instead offer him support in the now instead of speaking to a future that neither of them could clearly see.
As she listened to Felix explain what had gotten him to the boiler room, she let out an annoyed breath. “Of course. He’s prolonging it, cutting you off.” That had happened to her, in a way. Only, there’d been no promise. It was simply the decaying relationship with her mother and all of the things that were never said, head in a guillotine. “That isn’t your fault. He did something to you to hurt you, and you did something to keep your friends safe. You weren’t wrong for doing that. You do know that, don’t you?” She offered them a small smile, somewhat less encouraging than the last. The situation Felix was in was… far worse than what she had anticipated. “Are you able to tell me the conditions of the promise at all? Is there anything that will fulfill it?”

The thing about Mona, the thing that made her Felix’s best friend in the world, was that no matter the situation, she’d always at least try to understand. The two of them operated differently, there was no doubt about that. They viewed the world through different lenses, understood different parts of it to different extents. But that had never once stopped Mona from at least trying to understand Felix’s point of view. And, once she’d done that, she’d help them find solutions. Mona was proactive, a planner. Sometimes, Felix needed someone like that in their life.
They smiled as that understanding washed over them now, feeling a little lighter in spite of everything. “Yeah,” they confirmed with a small nod. They’d wished, a thousand times over the years, that Leo had just let the break be clean. Why keep Felix around just to torment them? Had they been that bad during the course of their relationship? Had they been so insufferable that Leo genuinely believed they deserved some retribution for it? “I don’t regret it,” they admitted. “Keeping my friends safe, I don’t — I don’t regret that. I’d do it again.” Zane and Wyatt might have messed up, might have gone against what Felix had asked them to do, but they didn’t deserve to be hurt for trying to help him. Sighing, they shrugged. “I just… I’m stuck until he says I’m not. He gets to decide.” Wasn’t that always how it went?

Mona knew that Felix would have saved their friends a million times over and ended up in the same spot without much complaint, but it made her upset to know that they blamed themselves for it instead of the person whose fault it actually was. She watched them for a moment longer, a sad smile pulling at the corners of her lips.
“I wouldn’t figure you would. Regret it, I mean.” But it was awful what had happened to them because they cared so deeply. Mona got to her feet, moving to the opposite side of the kitchen to grab Felix a glass of water. “Well, maybe something can help him decide.” She tossed a glance over her shoulder, “maybe there’s something that can push him forward.” It was a dangerous game to play, and she wouldn’t do anything without their permission, but to see them in this state was infuriating. “We’ll figure it out, Felix.” After the glass was filled, she returned to Felix’s side and placed it in front of him. “I won’t do anything unless you tell me to do it, but I’ll think of ways to help regardless.”

The last thing they wanted was to piss Leo off any more, but they knew there was little risk of Mona running off on her own without their say now that she knew how things had gone for Zane and Wyatt. And, regardless of how things might have gone between them, Felix did like to think of themself as something of an expert on what pissed Leo off. It was the kind of thing they’d learned by necessity throughout their relationship, the sort of lesson that became a survival tactic sooner instead of later. With Felix offering input, maybe they could find a way to… convince Leo without angering him further. It was kind of the only shot they had.
“Thanks, Mona,” they breathed a sigh of relief at her promise, secure in the idea that she wouldn’t act without them. “We’ll figure something out.” Mona was one of the smartest people he knew. With her at their side, Felix was pretty sure they could do anything.

Looker actually uses a lot of katakana even for Japanese words, and I don't know if it's to make things easier for kids to read, but he even uses the english word TROUBLE instead
Hell, in Japanese he really does just says a WHOLE lot of english words in his japanese text? Buddy, Heart, Hard-Boiled, Trouble, Girl, Champion (kinda normal), Method, Training, Hint, Notebook, Team, Member, Shining, Goal, Restaurant--
Example (using spanish instead of Japanese):
"Me puedes dar el Notebook? Necesito escribir el Looker Method para tu Training."
or basically:
"Can you give me the Libreta? I need to write down the Looker Método for your Entrenamiento."
And his JP voice lines in Masters he replaces Japanese words with english ones like Present, Event, Mission Start, Gotcha-- you get the point
idk it's really interesting that he talks like that. Perhaps that is why he is written to be multi-langual in English? But he just seems to use a lot of english in place of what should be easy but difficult to remember Japanese words

Lion's Den // AU para
"That dagger of a gaze you are throwing my way is unnecessary, pet." Envy's tone was laced by slight irritation, his gaze lifting from his plate to land on the brunette girl sitting several spots down from him at the banquet table as if that wasn't even far enough. Only a few days passed since the public execution sent the foundation of the palace quaking, the staff barely glanced in their King's direction anymore out of fear, and then there is the slight problem of his children. Ulric chose a seclusion in his bed chambers and apart from a delivery of meals or the constant visits by his twin, his son avoided him altogether. And then there is Estella, his darling girl, boiling with a rage that rivaled even her Uncle Wrath's or Kai's for that matter, as detestable as it was wasting a thought on that futile traitor. At least Envy caught glimpses of her every so often. It isn't simple raising his children alone and ruling over Hell, his twins carried precedence above all, despite mere fantasies they would show initiative ruling at his side. No...Ulric proved he was every bit of Gianna, but there is still hope for Estella yet.
"Unnecessary?" Estella ground out through clenched teeth. Her father really possessed the gull when a demand was made that she join him for dinner, forced into her royal regalia complete with her tiara since the man continued a taste of the dramatic flare, before he had the guards literally drag her to the dining hall. Fine, Envy could lock them both away in the castle as his prisoners, restrict the already rarity of visiting outside the gates, or pretend he did not merely ruin her twin's life by brushing over the brutal fact he murdered his son's lover, regardless if he knew the truth. The one action she will never tolerate? Further emotional distress befalling upon Ulric. Taking the hits landed on her shoulders now. "You wish to talk about unnecessary? Executing an innocent not only in front of the entire kingdom, but in front of your children by the only method you seem to know how, was unnecessary." She always came in swinging and nothing prevented her from swinging hard against the monster who couldn't punish her.
"Here we go." The King of Hell waved a hand carelessly, expecting the conversation land on this topic sooner rather than later. The death's inconsequential effect upon the inner workings of his kingdom meant no one would miss the fallen who did not watch their tongue against his child. "What choice did I have? What King would ever tolerate any member of his staff, of his subjects, speak in such a manner to the Prince? Here is a lesson you must learn quickly, Estella," Envy plucked his wine goblet from the table and swirled the red liquid before his eyes directed at his daughter once again, "Your people cannot respect you unless you give them reasons to fear you. Anyone who believes a refrain from mincing words at my son isn't needed and never face the fury of their ruler deserve to perish by my hand."
"Then where will it end, Father?" Estella reached for her fork and jabbed the potatoes on her plate through the prongs aggressively, but she didn't bother lifting it to her lips. If anything, the action prevented the young woman from ramming her knife through her father's skull. "If you slaughter every person Ulric and I come into contact with, there will be no subjects for you to rule over as a tyrant who makes believe he is a benevolent king." Her gaze flickered, watching Envy's fist tighten around his cup at the insult yet making no protest combating it. The words bothered him, good. Let the bastard squirm...at least he taught her something that stuck. "You leapt to a conclusion without hearing the facts just like always. And someone died, but why should that come as a shock when you spend every day leaving bodies in your wake?"
"Watch your tone with me, Sugarplum." Envy warned with a low growl, the statement itself causing Estella to tense in a merciless stab of anger. She detested when her father called her the name as if she were this pet he could command. It was also the name bestowed upon her mother long ago when her parents were happily married. No longer a term of endearment, simply a condescending way to rile and a reminder of Gianna's fate. The King could forgive the jabs of a daughter enraged by her parent, being pegged a tyrant by anyone other than his twins would guarantee a rampaged slaughter and a sliced out tongue, but Estella tested his patience far too much. "And what are the facts, pray tell? It appears I need an enlightening from someone who thought she could hide secrets. Go on," He set down the goblet and leaned back in his cushioned oak chair, gesturing in the girl's direction, "Tell me what your brother remained tight-lipped about in his absence. It seems you have this habit speaking for him anyway."
Estella released a hold on her utensil and placed her hands in her lap, distractedly tugging at the sleeves of her dress. The shade of green adorned every article of clothing she owned, representative of her status in House Envy as well as her lineage as the king's daughter. In the past, she pushed the limits with small rebellions like wearing the colors symbolized by the other Princes. A hint of blue or orange here and there left the young girl satisfied when the expression on her father's face spoke volumes. That summarized his signature sin, growing jealous his brothers were in her favor and not him. These were his children, his daughter, and never theirs. Obsessive, possessive, overprotectiveness.
"They were in love." She finally replied. A star-crossed relationship she helped conceal from prying eyes. While Ulric's small scrap of happiness meant the world for her, Estella warned her brother what can happen if their father caught wind that somebody traveled behind the king's back and seduced his son without approval. No one courted his children and no one ever dared asking for their hands as a marriage tactic in an alliance move. "The crime you so speak of that deserved a public execution for all to see was nothing short of a quarrel between two people who cared for each other. It wasn't a servant going above their station engaging in a screaming match with Ulric, it was an argument."
Envy silently rubbed the fingertips on his right hand together while he absorbed the information, the monster of jealousy slowly creeping from the cage and rearing its ugly head at the thought of another staking a claim on Ulric. Perhaps, he may have spared his son's lover if they came to him in solidarity and spoke the truth, but they chose a path rather reminiscent of his brother and the First Daughter. Then again, who is Envy jesting? He would've released the hungry beast and ordered the execution anyway. "That makes no difference. All in the palace understand a raised voice doesn't go unpunished and the example needed to be made. If Ulric pries himself from his room and apologizes, then perhaps...I will consider future relationships he pursues. For the time being," The demon hummed in thought, head bobbing from side to side. "Love isn't it."
The nerve, the sheer nerve. Estella could have arisen from her chair and walked away, even heard the voice of her twin whispering in her ear to leave this alone and refrain from agitating her father's temper, but never one sitting in silence and accepting his vileness as gospel was she. Accepting of the written law ruling over their lives. "You say love isn't it," She began with a surprising amount of calmness masking the bitterness Estella's grown comfortable with all these years, "But how would we know if we've never felt it yet? I keep giving myself false hope searching for something I will never find in your eyes." As the last word was uttered, Estella shoved away her plate as hard as she could to the side, hearing the clatter as it collided with the ground and ignoring it. Envy barely flinched. "You don't care to see what your protection is costing us, Father. I spent years picking up the pieces and now you expect Ulric to apologize for fostering a deep connection you have denied him his entire life while you ripped it from his hands brutally. Do you have any idea what it was like, having to hold my brother back as he begged you to show some mercy? I knew the truth, though, just as she did." Her mother stood to protect her children by any means possible and she paid the price. Imprisonment. "Monsters don't possess mercy."
"Enough." Envy slammed his hands against the table, sending every cup and plate rattling, as he pushed himself from his seat and stared the girl who couldn't help the knee-jerk reaction at the sudden outburst down hard. If anybody in Hell or the mortal plane triggered the man quicker, it's any mention of his wife. "Go ahead, Estella, you can point the finger of blame and call me the monster all you like, but the apple doesn't fall far from the family tree." Estella watched him steal the moment collecting himself, the small quiet before the storm she knew well. He was an unpredictable force hanging over Hell who kills at whim, any ally no one should ever trust completely.
Envy moved from his spot and traveled the length of the table until he stopped where his daughter sat. She followed the journey of his hand as he reached out toward a large plate covered by a cloche she previously hadn't noticed set a small distance from her purview before removing the cover without warning. There, resting in the center of the plate, was the severed head of Ulric's lover. Estella immediately rose to her feet in horror, but she felt her father's hand land on her shoulder and push her back down into her chair. Giving her no choice but to remain seated and stare into the eyes of someone her brother cherished most. "I think it's time you begin behaving like a Princess of Hell." Envy placed the cloche aside and leaned against the table's edge, "No more outbursts, no more temper tantrums, and spitting the venom in my face. You are my children and I'll be damned if I allow anyone take my family from me. I may grant you and your brother privileges should we understand each other from here on out. Estella," She turned her head to look up at him, the hatred in her gaze softening him a little, "Or the next head on that platter will be your mother's." The cold statement sent a shudder through the girl's body.
Estella did not bother caring if he kept her locked in place, she couldn't stay here in his presence another second. She knew Ulric's fear could prevent him from providing his aid, but she would do it for him too. Neither of them could survive like this much longer gripped in Envy's fist. He can exclaim everything he has done was for their benefit, that he truly loved his children with a passion. What happened when nothing prevented him from throwing his twins in a dark cell and tossing the key just as he did with their mother?

Bhairava (Mahakala Bhairava) (Sanskrit: भैरव, lit. frightful) is a Hindu Tantrik deity worshiped by Hindus. In Shaivism, he is a fierce manifestation of Shiva associated with annihilation.[1][2][3][4] In Trika system Bhairava represents Supreme Reality, synonymous to Para Brahman.[5][6] In Hinduism Bhairava is also called Dandapani (as he holds a rod or Danda to punish sinners) and Swaswa meaning "whose horse is a dog".[7] In Vajrayana Buddhism, he is considered a fierce emanation of Mañjuśrī and also called Heruka, Vajrabhairava and Yamantaka. Aakash Bhairab in Kathmandu. Bhairava originates from the word bhīru, which means "fearful". Bhairava means "terribly fearful form". It is also known as one who destroys fear or one who is beyond fear. The right interpretation is that he protects his devotees from dreadful enemies, greed, lust and anger. Bhairava protects his devotees from these enemies. These enemies are dangerous as they never allow humans to seek God within. There is also another interpretation: Bha means creation, ra means sustenance and va means destruction. Therefore, Bhairava is the one who creates, sustains and dissolves the three stages of life. Therefore, he becomes the ultimate or the supreme.
The origin of Bhairava can be traced to a conversation between Brahma and Vishnu which is recounted in the Shiva Mahapuranam. In it, Vishnu inquired of Brahma, "Who is the supreme creator of the Universe?" Arrogantly, Brahma told Vishnu to worship him as Supreme Creator. One day, Brahma thought "I have five heads. Shiva also has five heads. I can do everything that Shiva does and therefore I am Shiva." Brahma became a little egotistical as a result of this. Additionally, he began to forge the work of Shiva and also started interfering in what Shiva was supposed to be doing. Consequently, Mahadeva (Shiva) threw a small nail from his finger which assumed the form of Kala Bhairava and casually went to cut off one of Brahma's heads. The skull (Kapala) of Brahma is held in the hands of Kala Bhairava, Brahma’s ego was destroyed and he became enlightened. From then on, he became useful to himself and to the world, and deeply grateful to Shiva. In the form of the Kala Bhairava, Shiva is said to be guarding each of these Shaktipeeth (Shakti temples). Each Shaktipeeth is accompanied by a temple dedicated to Bhairava.
There is another school of thought which says that Shiva himself created Bhairava. There was one demon by name Dahurāsuraṇ who got a boon that he could be killed only by a woman. Kali was invoked by Parvati to kill him. The wrath of Kali killed the demon. After killing the demon, her wrath metamorphosed as a child. Kali fed the child with her milk. Shiva made both Kali and the child to merge with him. From this merged form of Shiva, Bhairava appeared in his eight forms (Aṣṭāṅga Bhairavas). Since Bhairava was thus created by Shiva, he is said to be one of the sons of Shiva.
Puranas too give different versions of Bhairava. In this version there was a war between gods and demons. To eradicate the demons, Shiva created Kala Bhairava from whom Aṣṭāṅga Bhairavas were created. These Ashta Bhairavas got married to Ashta Matrikas. These Ashta Bhairavas and Ashta Matrikas have dreadful forms. From these Ashta Bhairavas and Ashta Matrikas, 64 Bhairavas and 64 Yoginis were created.
Normally in Shiva temples, idols of Bhairava are situated in the north facing, southern facing direction. He is also called Kṣhetrapāla. He appears in a standing position with four hands. His weapons are drum, pāśa (noose), trident and skull. In some forms of Bhairava, there are more than four hands. He appears without dress and with a dog. His weapons, the dog, protruding teeth, terrifying looks, a garland with red flowers all give him a frightening appearance.
In all Shiva temples, regular puja rituals begin with Surya and end with Bhairava. Bhairava likes ghee bath (abhiṣeka), red flowers, ghee lamp, unbroken coconut, honey, boiled food, fibrous fruits etc. If a Bhairava idol is facing west, it is good; facing south is moderate; facing east is not good. The right time to pray to Bhairavi is midnight. During midnight it is said that Bhairava and his consort Bhairavi will give darśana (appearance) to their devotees. The most appropriate time is a Friday midnight. There are eight types of flowers and leaves used in archana (अर्चन) to Bhairava.
Bhairava is the ultimate form of manifestation or pure "I" consciousness. This form is called Svarṇākarṣṇa Bhairava. He has red or blue complexion and is clothed in golden dress. He has the moon over his head. He has four hands, one of which he holds a golden vessel. He gives wealth and prosperity. Performing pūja on Tuesdays gives quick results. In some of the ancient texts he is said to have thirty two hands, the shape of a bird, golden complexion, terrible teeth, and a human form above the hip. Worshiping him destroys enemies.
Some forms of Bhairava are guardians of the eight cardinal points. There are 64 Bhairavas. These 64 Bhairavas are grouped under 8 categories and each category is headed by one major Bhairava. The major eight Bhairavas are called Aṣṭāṅga Bhairavas. The Ashta Bhairavas control the 8 directions of this universe. Each Bhairava has seven sub Bhairavas under him, totaling 64 Bhairavas. All of the Bhairavas are ruled and controlled by Maha Swarna Kala Bhairava otherwise known as Kala Bhairava, who is the supreme ruler of time of this universe as per some Śaiva tantric scriptures (āgamas). Bhairavi is the consort of Kala Bhairava.[24] The eight Bhairavas are said to represent five elements viz. ākāś, air, fire, water and earth and the other three being sun, moon and ātman. Each of the eight Bhairavas are different in appearance, have different weapons, different vāhanas (vehicles) and they bless their devotees with eight types of wealth representing Ashta Lakshmis. Continuous worship of Bhairava leads the worshiper to a true Guru. There are separate mantras to all the eight Bhairavas.
Bhairava is also called upon as protector, as he guards the eight directions of the universe. In Shiva temples, when the temple is closed, the keys are placed before Bhairava. Bhairava is also described as the protector of women. He is described as the protector of the timid and in general women who are timid in nature.
It is generally believed that worshiping Bhairava gives prosperity, success and good progeny, prevents premature death and solution to debts and liabilities. Different forms of Bhairava evolve only from Śiva, who is called the Mahā Bhairava.
Trika System
Trika and Kashmiri Shaivism names the Absolute Reality(Para Brahman) as Bhairava. The Vijñāna Bhairava Tantra is a key Tantra text of the Trika System. Cast as a discourse between the god Bhairava and his consort Bhairavi it briefly presents 112 Tantric meditation methods or centering techniques (Dharana). The text is a chapter from the Rudrayamala Tantra,a Bhairava Agama. Bhairavi, the goddess, asks Bhairava to reveal the essence of the way to realization of the highest reality. In his answer Bhairava describes 112 ways to enter into the universal and transcendental state of consciousness. References to it appear throughout the literature of Trika, Kashmir Shaivism, indicating that it was considered to be an important text in the schools of Kashmir Shaiva philosophy and Trika.
In Buddhism
Thangka Depicting Vajrabhairava, ca. 1740s. Buddhism also adopted Bhairava (Tibetan: 'Jigs byed; Chinese: Buwei) as a deity and a dharmapala or dharma protector. The various buddhist forms of Bhairava (variously called Herukas, Vajrabhairava, Mahākāla and Yamantaka) are considered fierce deities and yidams (tantric meditational deity) in Tibetan Buddhism. They also have their own set of buddhist tantras, the Vajrabhairava tantras.[34] According to Tibetan tradition, these tantras were revealed to Lalitavajra in Oddiyana in the 10th century. These texts play a particularly important role in the Sarma (new translation) traditions of Tibetan Buddhism, especially among the Gelug school where Vajrabhairava is one of the three central highest yoga tantra practices of the lineage. Because of this, it is also popular in Mongolia as a protector deity and was also popular among the Manchus. The deity is also central to Newar Buddhism. The tantric practices associated with Bhairava focus on the transformation of anger and hatred into understanding.

Kala Bhairava attended by devotees at Kathmandu Durbar Square Temples or shrines to Bhairava are present within or near most Jyotirlinga temples. There are also the sacred twelve shrines dedicated to Shiva which can be found all across India including the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Varanasi and the Kal Bhairav temple, Ujjain. The Patal Bhairav and Vikrant Bhairav shrines are located in Ujjain as well.
One of the ancient temples of Kaal Bhairava is situated in Dhuri city (District Sangrur), Punjab. The idol of Kaal Bhairava in the temple was found hundreds of years ago. The temple has been managed by "Baba Shri Pritam Muni Ji" for many years. It is believed that Kaal Bhairava Ji resides here.
Gorat Kashmiris are known to worship Bhairava during Shivratri. The renowned Hindu reformer, Adi Sankara composed a hymn on Kala Bhairava called "Sri Kalabhairava Ashtakam" in the city of Kashi.
Observances
Bhairava Ashtami commemorating the day Kala Bhairava appeared on earth, is celebrated on Krishna paksha Ashtami of the Margashirsha month of the Hindu calendar. It is a day filled with special prayers and rituals.
Iconography
Rakta Bhairava Bhairava is depicted as being ornamented with a range of twisted serpents, which serve as earrings, bracelets, anklets, and sacred thread (yajnopavita). He wears a tiger skin and a ritual apron composed of human bones.[44] Bhairava has a dog (Shvan) as his divine vahana (vehicle). Bhairavi is a fierce and terrifying aspect of the Devi who is virtually indistinguishable from Kali, with the exception of her particular identification as the consort of Bhairava.
Bhairava himself has eight manifestations i.e. Ashta Bhairava:
Asithaanga Bhairava Ruru Bhairava Chanda Bhairava Krodha Bhairava Unmattha Bhairava Kapaala Bhairava Bheeshana Bhairava Samhaara Bhairava Kala Bhairava is conceptualized as the Guru of the planetary deity, Shani (Saturn). Bhairava is known as Bhairavar or Vairavar in Tamil, where he is often presented as a Grama devata or village guardian who safeguards the devotee in eight directions (ettu tikku). Known in Sinhalese as Bahirawa, he is said to protect treasures. Lord Bhairava is the main deity worshiped by the Aghora sect.

All the traditional settlements of Newars have at least one temple of Bhairava. Most of the temples of Bhairava in Nepal are maintained by Newar priests. There are several Bhairava temples in the Kathmandu valley. In south Karnataka, Lord Sri Kalabhairaveshwara is present as Kshetra Palaka in Sri Adichunchanagiri Hills.
Haatha: Shwet Bhairav Kala Bhairava temples can also be found around Shaktipeeths. It is said that Shiva allocated the job of guarding each of the 52 Shaktipeeths to one Bhairava. There are said to be 52 forms of Bhairava, which are considered a manifestation of Shiva himself. Traditionally, Kala Bhairava is the Grama devata in the rural villages of Maharashtra, where he is referred to as "Bhairava/Bhairavnath" and "Bairavar". In Karnataka, Lord Bhairava is the supreme God for the community commonly referred to as Vokkaligas (Gowdas). Especially in the Jogi Vokkaliga, he is considered the caretaker and punisher.[49] Shri Kala Bhairava Nath Swami Temple of Madhya Pradesh is also popular.

Method of preparation
Strain the flour. Heat 3 cups (tea) of water until it starts to boil. Pour over the flour and wait for it to hydrate a little. Add 3 pinches of salt and add the butter. Stir with the spoon so as not to stick to the pan, until done.

We loved New Orleans, so I brought a little home.
Hi, my name is Alan. Some people know me as Spooky, while, hopefully some of you know me from various food columns and recipes published in the Cadiz Record, the Kentucky New Era and the Paducah Sun.
I love to cook, especially for my friends and family. For the longest time, my sidekick was my colleague and buddy Hawkins Teague. We’ve both moved away and met and married beautiful wives, but that’t not what this is all about.
My wife Holly and I live in Paducah, where I’ve been working for myself as a freelance writer for the past six years. My specialty is role-playing games, though an old college friend from Tampa, Fla., Kali Robinson requested I should blog with my recipes again. That’s what iSabroso! is all about. Food, fun and friends!
Why iSabroso!? I grew up in both Texas and Florida surrounded by some of the best Latino cooks in the world. When something is really good we said iSabroso! I used that my name for my column in Hopkinsville.
So what’s for dinner? I am glad you asked. Holly and I vacationed in New Orleans last year and loved every moment. Some of the best meals I ate there consisted of shrimp and grits. The natives even eat it for breakfast, and it’s great in the morning with a Bloody Mary, just in case the party ran too long the day before. Our first night there, we tried it in a fine dining restaurant called Luke, while on another occasion, I got a bowl at the famous Ruby Slipper Cafe.
Ruby Slipper was especially fun, with a helpful and friendly bartender/server we nicknamed “Sarah Silverman,” who kept our boozy iced coffees full. Another waitress told us about grits when she brought out our food. Her boyfriend worked at another restaurant, and she shared some of the grits he made earlier. New Orleans is one of those places with no shortage of great places to eat.
To get to the point, both types of spicy, cheesy and creamy grits tasted amazing, and the barbecue shrimp I had with it was amazing. Luke’s grits and shrimp were great too, with some extra crabmeat. And when I came home, Holly and I talked all about how to cook it for ourselves.
I went selected the barbecue shrimp, because I could not get enough of it, and it contained one of my very favorite ingredients, beer! And if you have a little leftover after you cook, it’s quite refreshing on a hot summer day.
The Method to the Madness:
So this is also a fairly simple, two part recipe. Shrimp and grits, which around here, I refer to simply as “Shrimpandgrits” all one word. You have to say the whole thing, like “A Tribe Called Quest.”
Entonces.. (So?) we start with the grits. And do NOT used instant grits. That’s a hard no because they just don’t work for this recipe. We’re not discussing just some mush with a bit of cheese tossed on top. Other grits work, though I could only find quick grits, which work for the recipe. That just means they’re milled a little finer.
For the Grits:
Take two tablespoons of butter and saute about two roasted red peppers, a quarter cup of onions and about a third cup of diced jalapenos, just until the onions soften a bit.
Add three cups of water and one cup of milk, then bring it to a boil. Add a cup of dry grits, return to a boil, reduce the heat and cover, cooking for about 5 minutes at a low simmer. After this, remove the lid and add a cup of grated sharp Cheddar cheese, and another cup of Monterrey Jack? Why two kinds of cheese? The Cheddar gives it a full flavor, but is a bit dry, so the Jack adds just a bit of moisture and creaminess. Season with about a teaspoon of pepper and a like amount of salt. Stir it all up and keep it on low heat on the back burner while we go to work on the shrimp.
Para los Moriscos... (Guess what that means?):
We’re not starting with shrimp here just yet, but instead some bacon. I prefer a brand cured right here in west Kentucky. Chop up about two slices of bacon and put it in the skillet while cold, turning the heat to medium to render some fat.
When the bacon is done to your preferred level of crispness, add it to the grits, and stir them into the grits, while reserving the fat.
Into the bacon grease, fry about a pound of sliced green onion sausage to doneness. Green onion sausage is a popular New Orleans product adding a bit of spice and a lot of flavor. If you can’t find it, you can use Andouille, Kielbassa or other smoked sausages.
Then, add a good half-bag (16 oz). of frozen “Trinity” seasoning blend vegetables. What’s Trinity you ask? Brilliant question. The “Holy Trinity” of Cajun cuisine is onion, bell pepper and celery. Season with just a bit of salt (a pinch really) and a fair amount of pepper and cook til the onions soften, then add about three tablespoons of garlic cooking just a minute longer. Burnt garlic can be bitter.
I’m not quite sure why it’s called barbecue shrimp. It’s neither grilled nor smoked, but it sure comes with a sauce. For the sauce, add about a quarter cup Worcestershire sauce. We’ll season it up with 1/2 teaspoon of Cayenne, and about a tablespoon of Cajun seasoning. With the encouragement of Holly’s friend Michelle Divito, a longtime New Orleans transplant and a fellow Heathen with my wife, I tried some Slap Yo Mama. It adds both salt and spice, and tasted great. I added more black pepper to taste and a teaspoon of dried rosemary. A couple of bay leaves would have been good, but I ran out. I added the juice of one lemon, though my favorite is two limes.
Now take a half cup of the beer, I prefer Abita, but could not find any yesterday. Yuengling (with a satellite brewery in Tampa!) came to my rescue. Add it into the vegetables, sausage and sauce for about 10 minutes to reduce. Then in goes a pound of shrimp!
A note on shrimp: Get the freshest you can find. A little seafood shop here in town had it and the sausage. They take a truck down to the Gulf of Mexico, buy fresh seafood straight off the dock, and throw it on ice, driving it back to Paducah. Wild caught, and not farmed, frozen and shipped from abroad, it tastes great. They’ll even peel and de-vein for a modest charge.
So shrimp in the sauce, cook for only 2-4 minutes until your shrimp turns pink. Any longer than that, and your shrimp can get tough, rubbery and not a lot of fun to eat.
But Wait, Alan! There’s No Veggies:
Well, we have to make it a balanced meal. Chop and fry about three strips of bacon, rendering as above in another skillet, then toss in about 3/4 a head of chopped green cabbage. You can season it with about a half teaspoon of salt and pepper, though again, I replaced the salt with Slap Yo Mama. Stir fry until the cabbage is wilted.
When it all comes out, get a bowl of the grits, top it off with shrimp, sausage and sauce, with a generous side of fried cabbage. Hint: When you get the beer, get a six pack, and enjoy a few with dinner. ;) We didn’t have a bread, with plenty of starch with the grits. If you prefer, the shrimp works with French bread, steamed white rice, buttermilk biscuits or hush puppies. Be sure to get some sauce, though and garnish with sliced green onions.
We love hot sauce. Any Louisiana brand works great, though I went with Zaterain’s while Holly selected Chrystal’s. And yes, we have multiple types of hot sauce for different types of food. Tabasco, Louisiana, Slap Yo Mama and others are perfect for Cajun food.
Evening’s Entertainment:
So as I cooked, I put on Silence of the Lambs on TV, followed by the series Hannibal, teasing My Better Half, “This might not be appropriate with supper!” And true to form, when I sat down, she asked me to change the channel without my Jame Gumb impersonation that Holly despises.
As we ate, I switched to the Hulu series, “A Handmaid’s Tale.’ It’s one of Holly’s favorites, though, as they’ve now moved beyond the source material, I am looking for direction in the story. This week’s episode seemed t provide it, and it provided good viewing as we scuzzled generous plates of shrimpandgrits.
Well, I’m back to work, cooking for all the friends and family I love, and last night, a good time was had by all, with authentic New Orleans food, and an entertaining show. Good eating.
