Pay it forward

“Never bring a knife to a gun fight.”

Good advice, to be sure. But it’s not nearly as satisfying as bringing a gun to a knife fight.

Because something in us absolutely loves making sure that anyone who goes after us – gets worse from us than they gave.

And leaves with something to make them think twice about treating us like that in the future. Like regrets. And maybe a nasty scar.

Which is why today’s Gospel makes no sense to us. With stuff like,

“Offer no resistance to one who is evil.”

“When someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other one to him as well.”

It’s so out of line with our natural inclinations, that it might as well be in a foreign language. Because when we hear this stuff, it rolls right off us. Like water off a duck’s back. 

And yet, it’s what we are called to do.

Because it’s exactly how God treats us.

Every time we demand something of God that we have no right to. Every time we take God for granted. Every time we treat God like a thing to be used. Every time we abuse God’s love, patience, and mercy.

God doesn’t make sure that we get worse from Him than we gave.

God doesn’t make sure that we leave with something to make us think twice about treating Him like that in the future.

God doesn’t treat us like we would treat us.

Thankfully. The way we show our gratitude for God not treating us like we would treat us?

By paying it forward. By treating others like God treats us.

This is what today’s Gospel is all about. This is what God is calling us to do.

It’s something that you and I can never do on our own.

Thankfully, we don’t have to.

I think one of the kindest things you can do for people with various mental health struggles is just... let people back into your life after they've been absent for a while.

Making friends as an adult is so fucking hard already and isolating yourself from other people is a very common symptom of depression, anxiety, burnout, ocd, trauma, grief, etc. Which means that someone will do the hard work of recovery/healing and resurface back into a world where their previous friends have written them off because they stopped showing up.

So if you know someone where you're like "yeah we could have been better friends but they fell off the map a bit" and that person suddenly reaches out, or starts showing up to events even though you kind of forgot they were still in the group chat... well they may have been Going Through It and you don't actually have to punish them for their absence you can just be glad that they're back.
