I actually really love how you're writing Peggy in Of Home Near! She's an incredibly straightforward and grounded person, and while that makes her good at plowing through problems right in front of her, she doesn't do abstract very well. At least not yet. So of course she wouldn't buy into time travel as a real thing, to say nothing of her feelings toward Steve

Aww, thank you! I am thinking about Peggy a lot, since she's the character I'm most worried about; I've gone through CATFA and Agent Carter multiple times already this year, on top of my WWII research to make sure that she feels as grounded in canon and historically as possible. (Though AC has a lot of contradictions with CATFA, the main MCU saga, and also history. There was no vice president of the United States in 1946. You can't sight-decrypt a one-time-pad system. There's a reason I went on a long exegesis of how cryptanalysis works in that last chapter.)

From Peggy's point of view the time travel is just an absolutely ridiculous story, which...it is! It really is unless you've been dealing with Avengers-level nonsense for the past six years, and even then I think most of the Avengers would blink at it. (Though given that it's pretty close to the cover story Mysterio gives Peter and Fake Fury in FFH, I think they're just unusually gullible.) From Peggy's POV, Steve was only gone for four weeks (there's a week that passes between Steve and Nat's arrival and Peggy's and Phillips'), which is not that much longer than he was gone between going AWOL and returning from the Hydra factory. Plenty of Allied airmen got shot down and walked out after a lot longer than that, so the fact that he's shown up with this story is just...really, really weird. And that's without counting the wife.

I'm writing a Steve and Peggy interrogation scene now and just...neither of them is having a good time.

Luke, in the three days he's been aboard General Kenobi's and Anakin's ship, has been rather enjoying himself. It's clean, quiet, and he's gotten to fulfill his many, many childhood dreams of hanging out with his father. Of course, his father doesn't know he's his father, and isn't technically a father at all yet, but it counts more than any other experience Luke has had with the man.

He's sure it'll be over soon, though. They haven't really interrogated him yet, and while some of that is because they're clearly entirely overwhelmed with repairs and planning, there's only so long they're going to go without investigating the rogue Jedi they've gotten ahold of.

Which is why when Kenobi stalks down to the cellblock, Anakin in tow, Luke isn't really all that surprised. He stands up, turns to face them with the sort of calm-and-in-control expression Old Ben had always had on.

And then he promptly does a double take, because they're holding. comm with Leia on it, glaring at him.

"Leia?"

“Luke,” Leia says, staring at him very intently, “what the hells are you doing with them?”

Luke blinks. “Hi.”

Leia glares at him. “Answer, now.”

“Bonding?” Luke offers.

“In what way— how is this part of your mission parameter? You were supposed to go in, clean up, and get out. How did you end up here?”

“How did you end up here?”

“You stupid wire-huffing droid pushed me into it!”

Luke perks up. “He’s here?”

“Alderaa’s halo, yes! He’s here!”

“What about Three—”

“I didn’t let him off the ship,” Leia answers before he can finish. “And I shouldn’t have let you get off the ship either. What part of ‘Quick, Outer-Rim checkup’ don’t you understand?”

“Well,” Luke retorts, “what part of ‘dangerous Force temple: do not enter’ do you not understand?”

“Enough to know that you wouldn’t listen!”

“Neither did you!”

“I am perfectly capable of—”

There’s a furious beeping from outside the range of the holo. Luke snorts. “How did he get through with you?”

“He was in the same room. I think it affects anyone who—”

Both Luke and Leia freeze.

“Han.”

“He’s coming after us,” Luke whispers.

“And that idiot is going to end up in the middle of a battlefield.”

“He’ll be fine,” Luke says, completely unconvincingly. “He’s a battle-hardened general.”

“He’s a barely-functional smuggler and you know it,” Leia counters, turning to face someone outside the range of the holo. “R2, can you set a recurring scan for Han’s comm?”

"Okay," Anakin says, and Luke is forcibly reminded that he and Leia are not alone. "What in the genuine fuck are you two talking about?"

Luke opens his mouth to speak before Leia gives him her patented 'shut-up-right-now-or-I'll-make-you' look. Instead, he looks at Kenobi.

A chill goes through him.

He's not— familiar with Ben, neither past nor future, but that is not a look of someone who doesn't know what's going on. Kenobi has them figured out at least halfway, and the scary thing is that he's not bothering to hide it. He thinks he knows what they are, if not who they are, and he hasn't told Anakin.

Luke freezes. Does he know who Anakin ends up as? Is that why he hasn't told him? Is Kenobi waiting to have all the information before he interrogates Luke?

More importantly, what is Luke supposed to say if Kenobi does come to him with the truth? He's a terrible liar!

Luke turns back to Leia, who is doing an excellent job of obfuscating every part of the truth from Anakin, and meets her eyes. She does a little half nod, so quick and tiny that no one else would have noticed. She's getting him out of here; he just has to be ready.

Yo I have been having so much fun reading of Home Near! It's such a fun concept, and you're doing an amazing job with the struggle Steve and Nat and Peggy are dealing with.

Thank you, I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it! I'm having a lot of fun with it and am trying to be honest with where all the characters are emotionally at these points in time, which is not always a very healthy or happy place. (I'm always worried that Peggy comes off badly in this story, which is not my intention, since I'm writing her as a I read her in CATFA and Agent Carter.)

I get why fantasy authors would default to using, like, the same basic arrangement of seasons and weather and gravity that we have here in The Real World because they have to make up so much shit as it is and it IS probably good praxis to give your readers some familiar touchstones in your world so they can just focus on the plot, but. having said that. I think there should be more settings that have seventeen seasons, all of them different lengths, and constellations that don't have fixed patterns because sometimes they'll get pissy and just move to a different part of the sky, and sometimes the sun tells people things telepathically, and there's a type of weather where the air just gets really thick and difficult to walk through that's unpleasant but not any more uncommon than rain. it's called smärklf.

the worst part of my job (standing around at college orientations being Visibly Queer) is when parents nervously alter their entire walking trajectory to stay out of range as if I'm going to bite them and pass on my infectious homosexuality.

this is wildly eclipsed by the best part of my job, parents who are such wildly enthusiastic allies that their children seem a little embarrassed about it. I'm talking parents who eagerly point out my little rainbow-draped table and urge their kids to come over, parents who excitedly pick through my button box offering up the relevant pride flags and pronouns to their kids, parents who have detailed questions about harassment policies and gender affirming care while their kids are trying to wander away, parents who rush over with open arms and obvious glee on their faces knowing there's a space on campus dedicated to keeping their kids safe.

the ferocity with which these parents love and affirm their queer kids is so humbling and wonderful.
