Still can’t get over Tommy as a mid forty-something year old gangster, international businessman, killer, sometimes assassin sometimes spy, multi millionaire from nothing, minister of parliament elected twice, innovation sponsor, patron of the arts, etc, actually canonically writing a list of ‘My Top Regrets’ and putting his wife’s name at the top of the list.

The room was a haze of smoke, perfume, and sin---- an indulgent party descending fast into hedonistic spectacle. Tommy Shelby observed it all with the detached composure of a man who had seen worse and done worse. His brothers, no doubt, were already deep into their usual cocktail of cocaine and questionable women----lovers they would later stash away like secrets before facing their wives. Tommy, however, operated on a different frequency. He dabbled in vices but never let them define him. A calculated man, he rarely lost himself to drink, and while opium held a certain allure, it was merely a tool, a nightly ritual to chase away the dark visions that haunted his sleep. Substances dulled the edge for others, but they offered him little beyond fleeting utility.

Now, sex? That was a pursuit he could respect. But even in pleasure, Tommy remained unshaken, his indulgences tempered by an inexorable self-control. Reclining on the plush sofa, cigarette in hand, his cutting blue eyes scanned the room. They settled momentarily on a mostly naked couple entwined on a nearby sofa, the scene eliciting no more than a flicker of disinterest. He exhaled a plume of smoke and glimpsed to the young man beside him, his voice a low murmur, steady amidst the chaos. "Nervous, are you?"

My absolute favourite Tommy and Lizzie moment is in S5 after the pantry sex and before his protective murder threat, when they’re putting themselves back together having a moment, and in that moment Lizzie asks: ‘so is that why you pulled me in here, to stake your claim?’

And the number of expressions that go across his face and that little cocky headshake before he settles on fuck it, ‘yeah’

And then the number of expressions that go across her face before she settles on, idek, strange softening and hurt but also some sort of gleeful delight, oh god, somewhat helplessly, ‘well, it’s a start’

S2 E4

"Not to win the derby, Curly."

Throughout all of Peaky, Tommy speaks to Curly in such a gentle way (Arthur does, too). It's not belittling way or like a child, but definitely with a softness. Even when he's surrounded by others like Charlie (who's little harsher with Curly) and May in this episode, he still has a gentle approach to Curly. It's lovely, it's kind, and a sign of his 'true' character, perhaps. But I want to understand why he is unabashed in displaying that gentleness even around people that he's displayed the harder side of himself to in other ways.

Is it a human nature kind of thing - that he's only 'ugly' in times when he feels ugliness is warranted? In 'The Ballad of Tommy Shelby', we learn that he's aggressive when it's deserved, that he'd stand up for those who needed it (a horse in the ballad). So, he has a sense of justice, a sense of moral objection providing him with reason for his actions.

Does he see himself as having a deep moral need, even when he could be seen as weak to reveal his softer nature, to show that those who are of lesser intellect and kinder in nature/disabled/low IQ still deserve a level of respect and affection that other around him in his line of work mightn't offer? Or is it just because it's Curly?

Of course, it's also in this episode that he walks in on Arthur dogging the girl in the pub, and his tone is pretty much the same - so....
