Wedding Dress Wednesday 👰
This ca.1834 wedding dress from the V&A Collection has that quintessential 1830s silhouette. The shoulders are sloped, the skirt is voluminous and the sleeves are massive.
Description from the V&A website:
"Wedding dress consisting of a pelisse robe with large sleeves and bell shaped skirt. It is made of white muslin with self coloured cotton embroidery in a formal floral pattern. There is a bow of satin at ankle height, in the front of the skirt. The dress is lined with silk and fastens at the neck and waist with black metal hooks and eyes. There is an additional silk tying ribbon inside the waist."

La Mode nationale, no. 1, 1 janvier 1886, Paris. No. 9. — Manteaux. Redingote. Sortie de bal. Pelisse scolaire. Modèles des grands magasins du Printemps. Bibliothèque nationale de France
(1). Redingote en grosse serge cheviot vert myrte. Posée sur un jupon plissé assorti, elle tient lieu de costume. Ajustée par derrière et boutonnée par devant de haut en bas, un côté bordé de grelots de laine, simule une veste de toréador, allongée jusqu'à la hanche. Le col est droit, et le revers arrondi et grelotté, forme double manche, comme si la veste était continuée. Le chapeau amazone qui va avec ce costume est en velours, buissonné de rubans.
(1). Myrtle green heavy cheviot serge frock coat. Placed on a matching pleated petticoat, it serves as a suit. Adjusted at the back and buttoned at the front from top to bottom, one side lined with wool bells, simulates a toreador's jacket, extended to the hip. The collar is straight, and the rounded and bell-shaped lapel, double sleeve shape, as if the jacket were continued. The Amazon hat that goes with this suit is made of velvet, with bunched ribbons.

(2). Sortie de bal en lampas blanc ramagé d'or, ourlée d'un gros marabout blanc et or. La forme est une visite-peplum, pointue devant; les manches sont indiquées par un gros pli, aplati dans le dos, avec lequel elles forment une seule pointe. Le costume qui s'harmonise à cette sortie de bal est une polonaise demi-montante en crêpe de Chine ivoire, brodée jardinière et posée sur une jupe de satin merveilleux toute floconnée de dentelle.
(2). Ball mantle in white lampas decorated with gold, hemmed with a large white and gold marabou. The shape is a visit-peplum, pointed in front; the sleeves are indicated by a large fold, flattened in the back, with which they form a single point. The costume that harmonizes with this ball mantle is a half-rise polonaise in ivory crepe de Chine, embroidered jardiniere and placed on a skirt of marvelous satin all flaked with lace.

(3). Pelisse scolaire, en lampas mordoré. Elle est ajustée derrière par de gros plis à la taille. Devant elle est toute droite et s'ouvre sur un gilet de velours châtaigne. Le même velours forme col droit et large biais-entonnoir à la manche, large et froncée à l'écolière, au poignet. Ce manteau comporte un costume en faille mordorée et un chapeau amazone en velours marron garni de plumes assorties.
(3). School pelisse, in bronze lampas. It is adjusted behind with large pleats at the waist. In front it is straight and opens onto a chestnut velvet vest. The same velvet has a straight collar and wide bias-funnel at the sleeve, wide and gathered at the schoolgirl, at the wrist. This coat features a golden-brown faille suit and a brown velvet amazon hat trimmed with matching feathers.

Blonde hats (bobbin lace) decorated with 'pattes' of satin and flowers from Saldun. Further accessories: gloves, bracelets on both wrists, fan, flat shoes. The print is part of the fashion magazine Journal des Dames et des Modes, published by Pierre de la Mésangère, Paris, 1797-1839.
