This gremlin knows what Homestuck is and can’t stand the fact that he understands the references Toga makes to it. Also possibly one of the few who has actually read homestuck on this list, and won’t hesitate to correct Toga or Shigaraki if they fuck up a fact.

He also really is into The Walking Dead. You can’t tell me that Kurogiri doesn’t have a TV set up somewhere in the bar so he and Shigaraki can sit and watch. This does end up with the majority of the league having a once a week get together where Jin gets Pizza, Toga gets several boxes of soda for them, and Shigaraki sets up everything. 

Denki Kaminari

This bitch was into homestuck. Like he wasn’t just into homestuck, he was INTO homestuck. Most likely one of those kids that used to jump on Omegle in a shitty cosplay for those homestuck Omegle cosplay meets the fandom used to do. He also totally has a genderbent Nepeta cosplay, a Dave strider cosplay, and a Jake cosplay SOMEWHERE. Most likely to accidentally wear a homestuck shirt to class.

Never once picked up a Harry Potter book or watched the movie, but you know this kid has a hufflepuff robe in his closet and some hufflepuff merch. He doesn’t know shit about the actual canon since he is just there to vibe

Really into Kpop. BTS, Blackpink, ITZY, EXO, Ikon, BlockB, BigBang minus Seungri cause he is icky, SuperJunior, NCT, WINNER, Got7, Red Velvet, (F)x, and more. Like you can’t tell me this guy doesn’t listen to girl groups and shit like BTS. (His bias has to be J-hope) He also bops with Mina the most. These two also most likely post dance covers of the songs to instagram and TikTok, so they have quite the following. (But their best video was their “Boy In love” cover they did with Kirishima, Deku, Shoto,Jirou, Momo, and Bakugo.)

This kid was also into Five nights at Freddy. He owns all of the games and will still play them with the Bakusquad, but he is pretty quiet about this fandom just because of how BULLIED he was for enjoying it. 

LOVES Danganronpa too. Bakusquad do a weekly game night and they all went through all of the games. Let’s just say Denki cried a LOT at the deaths. Like a lot. (He may have a few cosplays of his own too)

Eijiro Kirishima

Kirishima liked Supernatural just because of how manly Sam and Dean are. Like fuck yeah, he wants a chevy impala too cause it is a beautiful car and wants to know how to protect yourself from shit like demons and angels. He never did much besides watch the show, cry a lot, and try to draw the characters. (Also he had a crush on Dean just cause of how badass and manly he is, but nobody can blame him)

He totally sat and watched Denki play Undertale, so he knows all about it. His favorite character is Undyne and he actually cried when they beat her in Genocide mode cause holy shit dude. That sucked. Oh and Sans. Fuck Sans.

He enjoys Kpop and will listen to it with the Bakusquad. He really admires BTS for how much of an impact they have made not only on his friends, but also the world itself and you can’t tell me that this guy doesn’t think the world of Kim Namjoon. Like he listens to Mono on repeat and is such a big RM fanboy. Also really likes Bigbang (He thinks Daesungs voice is so nice and will sleep to his singing if he could), and Kyungsoo is his favorite in Exo. Cried when Bigbang started coming back from the Military, and cried harder when Kyungsoo had to leave.

Danganronpa is a game he really enjoyed with his friends and will even replay from time to time. He gravitates towards the really manly characters, but some others have spots in his heart. Mondo, Sakura, Gundham, Nekomaru, Kaito, and Gonta were his favorites. Let’s just say the game didn’t treat him well.

Fumikage Tokoyami

He ended up picking up the Harry Potter books and fell in love with the world itself. You can’t tell me this guy doesn't have a limited edition trunk set of the books hidden in plain sight. Like everyone thinks that the trunk holds something like crystals or some bones or knives but nah. It’s just his Harry potter books. Oh and Midnight totally gave him a Ravenclaw scarf around the holidays. You can’t tell me otherwise.

Death note? Death note. Only to episode 25 though. 25 happened and he just hasn’t continued watching cause it isn’t the fucking same.

Hitoshi Shinsou

Shinsou liked Supernatural for a while, but he eventually lost interest. He did his best to also never get involved with much of the fandom since it honestly scared him a bit, but his fear didn’t stop him from posting some theories into discussion boards.

He listens to Kpop a bit since he hangs out with Denki a lot and found out he really enjoys Ikon, BlockB, BTS, 

Bitch was in the Creepypasta Fandom. Like not even the good ones, he was into Jeff the killer and Eyeless jack and all of those ones. Sure, he would listen to the others and read the crappy ones, but he had a phase he is mildly ashamed of now.

This kid loves everything relating to Stephen King. He will have conversations with Aizawa and Hizashi about the books, and they all agree that Kings writing can rather be extremely amazing, or be the equivalent of a 13 year old attempting to write smut for the first time. It’s so damn funny to him

Hizashi Yamada

He has read all of the harry potter books and actually enjoys them quite a bit, but he tries not to let that show too much. He does have a Slytherin lanyard that holds his keys though that Denki had mentioned. It managed to get Mic off track for the class period when he started discussing the books with the students (Mainly Izuku, Tokoyami, and Denki)

He watches The walking dead with Aizawa 

Actually bops to Kpop after the Bakusquad introduces it to him. Massive RM fanboy so he and Kirishima will occasionally go off about how admirable and badass he is. Like RM taught himself english just from watching Friends??? And Hizashi admires that so much. He also loves diving deeper into their lyrics since they normally have such good meanings.

Izuku Midoriya

Oh he loves Harry potter so damn much. He has the books on his shelf, a Gryffindor robe in his closet, a full uniform, and several wands. He is such a nerd so you can’t tell me he doesn’t have a special notebook that has notes on the spells, character analysis, and a variety of different facts.

Really enjoys listening to BTS! He doesn’t know much about other kpop groups, but he really enjoys dancing with Mina and Denki (even if Izuku has 2 left feet and struggles with dancing)

Had a Dragonball phase. Like this kid loVEs Dragonball. It’s actually one of the reasons why he and Katsuki grew to be friends since they both watched the show. They would talk about how they would beat Frieza or the Ginyu squad all of the time.

Katsuki Bakugo

This bastard finds himself actually enjoying Kpop after Mina and Denki go off about their favorite bands, and he really finds himself enjoying BTS, Day6, and SHINee. 

Danganronpa was a game he experienced with his friends and FUCK was it an adventure for him. He got really invested with the story and for a while, the Bakusquad chat was active as hell because of all of the theories he had. He fucking HATED Byakuya, actually shed some tears for Fuyuhikos’ character development and Gundhams death, and was about to throw hands during the 4th chapter of V3. It was a Rollercoaster of emotions, but he loved every moment of it.

This kid had a Dragonball Z phase. No shit he would wake up, watch an episode of Goku screaming, and then go out to play. Honestly this routine started when he was 5 and he will still occasionally watch it. He still loves Dragonball, and he totally has a collection of dragonballs somewhere.

After Shoto and Momo watch Rupauls Drag race in the Common room, He gets hooked. His dad is a fashion designer, so he finds himself really enjoying the fashion aspect of the show as well as the makeup part of it all. He actually does Minas’ makeup occasionally and once people start finding out, he becomes their makeup artist. The girls makeup, and occasionally he will do drag makeup on the guys if they ask. Sometimes the Drag viewing parties start by Bakugo doing everyones makeup and then ordering Pizza.

Mina Ashido

Mina fucking loves to dance and everybody knows that, so it’s no surprise that she manages to nail every damn Kpop she does. She really loves the variety of dances and she can match every vibe. A dance in heels? Shes got it. Hip hop? Oh hell yeah. Cute? Sure! Badass? Shes got this. She is really just a bop.

Danganronpa was an EXPERIENCE for her. She absolutely adored the cases that needed to be solved, cried at the characters, and adored the game. She totally cosplayed Tsumugi with Cospox once or twice with Denki just for giggles sake.

Totally was heads over heels for Ouran Highschool Host club. She thought the anime was so damn precious (She adores Hikaru) and was so sad that there hasn’t been a 2nd season, so she bought all of the manga.

Momo Yaoyorozu

She is a Kpop fan! She totally could be an idol since she can sing pretty well, has the face for it, can dance pretty well! Her favorite thing is rapping though. You can’t say that Momo wouldn’t be able to write some bad bitch raps and pull them off with ease. With her, Mina, Jirou, and Ochaco, they make one HELL of a Girl Group. They love to do covers of Blackpink, Red Velvet, CherryBullet, ITZY, and Mamamoo covers. Her biases have to be Jennie, Irene and Moonbyul.

Tamaki Amajiki

Flipped through homestuck when it started, really never got into it but admired the work people put into their cosplays. Knows basic character names and that buckets should be feared.

He actually used to really like My little Pony! He would NEVER call himself a brony, but he really enjoyed the show. He only watched a couple of seasons, but the show itself was pretty relaxing and managed to calm him down when he was feeling anxious. If anybody ever knew he had a my little pony phase though (And still actually will watch it from time to time) he might just die from embarrassment.

Want to play Legend of Zelda? Well Tamaki is your guy to talk to about it. He might start rambling and will completely forget about his anxiety for a moment before realizing how nerdy he sounds. He has a gamecube in his dorm to play Twilight princess and Ocarina of time, He has a Wii for Skyward sword, and god did this kid lock himself in his room when breath of the wild came out. He can speedrun it like none other (Seriously, if he let’s you watch him, you will be fucking surprised by how amazing he is.)

Gotta throw in Teen Titans. Seeing Beast boy use his power in so many badass ways gave him some pretty cool ideas for his own quirk.

Oh and Rupauls Drag race. Nobody would expect him to be a fan of drag race, but he actually does enjoy watching the goofy drama. If you’re dating, you better expect weekly Drag race with him. It’s pretty funny to watch him enjoy the show. Sometimes he gasps, laughs or bites his lip, eyes hooked to the screen.

Shoto Todoroki

Another motherfucker who could EASILY be an Idol if he wanted to be. He actually really enjoys Kpop after Momo introduced it to him. They both often bop to it together when they study or hang out. He is also most likely to be the one recording the dancing videos or editing them too since he really enjoys helping out the girls. 

Want to watch him nerd out? Watch the classic Godzilla movies with him. Like HOLY SHIT does this man love the 50s-70s Godzilla movies. Bring him a box set and he will rather hug you really tight or run to grab blankets from his room cause this dude ADORES these movies. (Especially the mothra one. Like he will cling to you, thank you over and over again, and watch them with almost childlike glee.)

This bitch bops with Rupauls Drag race. He really enjoys makeup and has debated on trying drag himself (Not that anybody would know that) but it’s kind of shocking to see that he is the one that started the Weekly Rupauls Drag Race viewing in the UA Dorms. 

Yugi Aoyama

His mother used to read Harry Potter to him to help him sleep when he was a child so he naturally knows a lot about it. He knows he is a Slytherin and when Izuku thought about it, it made sense. He is pretty arrogant and wants to impress with his upbringing and french lineage. He also makes it pretty hard to get to know him personally, so Izuku makes a note that he is a Slytherin.

Likes Kpop, but isn’t SUPER into it like Denki or Mina. He likes listening to BTS and Exo and his Biases are Seokjin and Chanyeol.

Unpopular Kpop Opinions

Yeah, I know, this trend is so dead it’s not even funny anymore, but I still wanted to say my piece, so here we go (obv I have more than like 12 opinions but)

Y’all know the drill. I’m not trying to offend anyone, these are just my personal opinions, if you’re offended, either move on or debate like a civilized person, don’t waste anybody’s time with nasty hate :)

1. Blackpink is the most processed group out there Rn. Don’t get me wrong, I love the girls and I’m not saying that they have horrible personalities or are actually ugly or anything like that, it’s just that it’s so obvious that nothing they show is real, way more than other groups, where it’s just a general feel. It’s like every little detail with Blackpink has been micromanaged. All of their aegyo is scripted, everything they say is scripted, all of their outfits are done by a stylist (even the airport fashion everyone goes crazy for). I definitely have a feeling that their personal instagrams are highly manufactured as well. I feel like YG truly treats them like Barbie dolls. It just seems to be on a whole different level from the norm

2. I get bad vibes from Chanyeol. Honestly at this point he’s my least fav EXO member. I really feel like he was made an idol because of his looks )which is difficult for me cause he’s not even that attractive to me?) He’s pretty good at rapping the lines he’s given, but he’s not a rapper. I’ve never cringed more in my life than when I watched his Unpretty Rap Star performance with subtitles. WTF??? Rapping aside, he comes off as so extremely arrogant, and honestly really fake. Ik almost idols put up a front for the fans and I totally get that, and most of them are great people beneath that persona, but that’s just not the vibe I get from Chanyeol. And then there’s the continued racism/sexism...

3. I don’t like Gfriend. Sunny Summer is a bop, don’t get me wrong, but I just haven’t been able to get into the group. I think my problem was that the first thing I ever saw was a clip of Yerin on a variety show, and literally all she did was brag about how her fans say she looks like an anime character and how small her face is and how terribly difficult their choreography is, and it really just gave me a bad taste in my mouth. Since then, I’ve seen ugh things from other members, like bad attitudes and stuff. The only member I can like is Umji, I feel so protective of the girl because she gets such a hard time (even from her members like wtf)

4. I don’t get why people are shocked at Baam being the same as Boom Boom. Obviously Momoland’s company is going to try and recreate the group’s success with a similar song, and in the interest of honesty, I wasn’t crazy about Boom Boom, and think Baam is way catchier. So in my opinion, it’s like they upgraded, though I do hope they try something different for their next comeback so they don’t totally flop.

5. Jennie is the obvious favorite (of YG) in Blackpink. This has been clear to me ever since I first came across Blackpink, and tbh, the more I see from them, the more it pisses me off. I’m not hating on Jennie it’s not her fault. I just really hope that it doesn’t tear the group apart. Anybody would be affected by that sort of thing after awhile and if YG doesn’t get his shit together his most popular group Rn is going to wither.

• Ex.: Why is Jennie the one getting preferential treatment w fashion?? Everyone says Jennie is the one who gets all this stuff because she’s the most “fashion adjacent” in the group, but she’s that way because YG made her that way. It’s the company putting her forward the most. She got a Chanel contract way before any of the other members got to do anything on their own w fashion. Now she’s doing solo sponsorships and solo magazine shoots. Jisoo is the one who deserves this. She’s the group’s visual, and she gets screwed over all the time with line distribution. If she got the fashion stuff, I could see it as fair, but no, she doesn’t get lines or solo promotions

6. I get really cold vibes from Taeyong. This one’s pretty short, all I have to say is that I feel like he’s not very genuine.

7. I hate it when people blame Taeyeon or Jessica for what happened with SNSD. I don’t think the guilt should fall totally on one girl. I think they’re both guilty. Everything I’ve ever seen with SNSD has made me feel that something happened between them that caused a lot of issues. It could be a battle for popularity, it could be jealousy. I just think when people point out that there was obv tension between them, the fault shouldn’t go to one girl. In my opinion, they’re both divas, so shit was bound to happen.

8. I don’t like Krystal’s attitude. So a lot of people defend Krystal by saying that she only gets shit for her attitude because she’s female, which is true. But where I disagree is when people say it’s okay. It’s not okay for Krystal to do it (and tbh I get cold vibes from her sister too) nor is it okay for male idols to do it. Like you know exactly what you signed up for, you’re so privileged to be where you are, and you’re just going to pout the whole time?? I just don’t have sympathy

9. I feel like BTS are fake woke. I’m not commenting on actual political views within the group, I just feel like they’re putting on a display (like making a big show of it) and stretching this to appeal to westerners. Like I applaud what they’ve done for mental health, but they don’t speak up about the Wild bulllying going on within their own fandom, and there are so many issues they could stand up for in Korea, but instead they’re going to bring up MLK? It just doesn’t quite feel okay to me, idk

10. I don’t think Ikon should’ve been a seven member group. I’m an ikon fan and I love all of the members, I really do, but I feel like seven is so unnesscary, and I have this feeling that like YG threw in extra members just to follow the trend of the really big groups. Having a bigger group like that really breaks from YG’s usual pattern, and I feel like it fits with his newer trend of being a follower, not a setter, which is just a whole other topic to discuss. But no, I definitely feel that Hanbin, Bobby, Junhoe, and Jinhwan are the ones who truly add to the group. I love my other three boys to bits and believe all seven should be idols, but there should’ve been some other arrangement.

11. EXO needs to stop fucking with Suho. I’ve seen so many videos of them making fun of him and ignoring him and honestly it pisses me the fuck off, especially since Suho never does this in return. I’m sure there are plenty of videos and photos of them loving him too, and I’ve seen them, but in general, I feel like there’s a lack of respect towards their leader.

12. Xiumin is underrated. I don’t think it’s as bad now, because he has been promoting for EXO-CBX and that gave him some really good opportunities to shine and everything, but still, Minseok is talented, good looking, and doesn’t keep saying shitty racist things to Kai like some other people who I won’t mention.

THE ALBUM YES. so ive been looking forward to it for literally months, this is actually my first skz album release as a stay (since the last on was 9 months ago) i was sitting there hitting refresh on my spotify the second 6pm kst came around. (speaking of which, how did you do the release? i couldnt decide whether to watch or listen first but i ended up on listening cos there would be more material) okay: so cheese was super cool, very skz ya know? tho i almost wish theyd made domino the title track, tho obv it was a more experimental track and would have been a bit controversial (much like whistle for bp) i looooved domino and thunderous was absolutely impeccable. all the songs were amazing but standouts were- secrets, secrets which lowkey made me tear up idk why, red lights which almost killed me (it did not have to go that hard, but it did) and OT8 WOLFGANG omgggg i wasnt sure if hyunjin was going to be included in it but i was hoping and, ya know people had said hed be in there, but the further i got in, the less i was sure and then BAM hyunjin started what had been jisung's part and i just sat there grinning for about 5 minutes. surfin was absolutely adorable and gone away almost made me cry AGAIN. star lost was so touching, almost a nod to hyunjins little star? silent cry was relatable beyond anything. SSICK was funny? for some reason I was laughing while it was playing, idk the combination of added cheering and minhos aggressiveness and the totall seriousness they sung it. but i rlly enjoyed it. sorry i love you showcased their vocals like nothing else. the view is THE BOP of 2021, absolutely going to be stuck in my head for the next decade, that hook is genius. what did you think?

oh yeah, abt quarantine having an effect. my friend and i talked about this earlier actually. i didn't realize the world was moving so fast until the pandemic happened. being in quarantine gave me time to think and i got to know myself more. it's just the sole good thing i got out of the isolation lmao. and abt my strict parents, ironically i got to go out today so i got to hang out with a few of my bestfriends. i had fun but my legs are a bit sore from walking. but they're a different set of friends. i'll get to hang out with the others when my getaway driver comes home in december.

hmm music recommendations for writing? depends on the plot you're writing. care to share what story you're working on and i'll try to rake my brain for a song that might match the vibe. i listen to classical / lo-fi if i don't have song inspo for a fic because lyrics sometimes distract me.

Discussion Time!

So, I’m talking to my friend on the phone about YG Entertainment and I decided to stir the pot because I’m messy. I’m sure you guys have heard that YG is planning on releasing a boy group and a girl group. So I wanted to kinda discuss/rant about YG Entertainment. Feel free to join in—comment, send me a message or ask with responses and opinions. I’m not here to fight with you guys. This is just to generate discussion.

The question I have is this:

Why are we still including YG as one of the top 3 labels when the only groups to have [more] consistent promotions is 2NE1 and BigBang? 

2NE1 and BigBang were pretty much the money-makers for YG. He ignored 2NE1 for two years. They put out the Crush album in 2014 and we didn’t really hear from them. They did a bit of solo activities but nothing major aside from CL’s “Hello Bitches.” I had gotten into 2NE1 shortly after that album came out and awaited another comeback. Unfortunately, I never got it. All blackjacks got was false hope and the girls’ disbandment. 2NE1 definitely deserved better, especially since a lot of girl groups look at them as a model. It kinda upsets me that YG still makes money off of them, even after disbandment. BigBang, fortunately, hasn’t been disbanded but all of the members will have to enlist at some point and might not be able to all be in one place at one time for a while. Taeyang and GD have both had releases this year as well as tours in the U.S. They are pretty much the only two that I know have been a little busy this year. On top of that, with T.O.P’s marijuana scandal, the harsh reality is that things with BigBang can’t be the same again even after he’s done with his military service.

As of right now, all YG has is Winner, iKON, and Blackpink. And he’s fucking up with them by not paying these groups enough attention to make it in the industry. K-pop is a harsh industry. If you don’t constantly promote, you won’t stay relevant. The reason groups like Twice and BTS stay relevant is because they have promotions more than once a year. Seventeen came out with two abums this year and released several projects. Pentagon is coming back for the 3rd or 4th time this year. Like, damn. Not saying groups have to promote all the time, but I do think they need to come back at least twice a year when they’re new. Once they gain a fanbase, they don’t have to come back as often. With new groups, it’s important because fans are still deciding whether they like the group and whether they will keep following the group.

Winner has one full length album and one mini album. Everything else that they’ve put out since Taehyun’s departure has been title tracks. I’m sure they lost some fans after Taehyun left too because 2NE1 left around the same time and people were probably fed up with YG’s shit. I know I was...because I was waiting for Winner to come back...with Taehyun. But unfortunately that never happened. Hell, the members would probably get more done if they leave the company and work on their solo careers. I mean, look at Taehyun. He’s doing well, writing and performing the kind of music he wants, and he seems happy. Are his former members even happy?

It’s the same with iKON. They have one full album and then title tracks. Mind you, there was about a two year hiatus in between. I’m sure they lost fans during this time because people got bored and/or impatient. This was upsetting just because they came in so strong only to disappear on a Japanese tour for like a year. There’s nothing wrong with that in itself but, at the same time, I think they should’ve built up momentum before leaving for an extended period of time. The only member that’s doing big things is Bobby. He had the #MOBB collab with Mino; we probably won’t hear from them again but that’s none of my business. He also released a full-length solo album this year. I can understand this. I mean, the boy won Show Me The Money 3 as an idol rapper. Being that these boys had to go through not one but two survival shows just to make it [and some of them almost didn’t make it], I’d think that YG would be promoting them better after spending money on the production of a show just to form the group. But I’m wrong.

Blackpink is the girl group that we were promised for like 4 or 5 years from YG. We finally got them. But guess what? They’re still ignored and only have a total of 5 songs even though it’s been a little over a year since they debuted. I thought that they would at least have a mini-album by now. How can YG debut another girl group when he neglected 2NE1, didn’t try to help Bom when that stupid “scandal” came to light, and is currently not giving much of a shit about Blackpink? Also, I heard that “As If It’s Your Last” is a song that was written for 2NE1. Upon listening to it, I felt hurt because I could almost hear CL, Minzy, Bom, and Dara singing it. I kinda thought it was unfair and disrespectful to both 2NE1 and Blackjacks. I know it’s not BP’s fault but YG is a snake.

YG prides himself in being in the top 3 K-pop entertainment companies but does he even have a right to feel that way when he can’t even manage the groups he has? When he’s becoming more and more known for tearing groups apart and crushing people’s hopes and dreams? I thought SM Entertainment was bad with the way they treat some of their artists but at least the CEO of SM is paying attention to their newest group, NCT, and giving them regular comebacks. At least JYP is consistent with popular groups like Got7, Day6, and Twice. I know that every company has groups that get less attention but YG literally doesn’t pay attention to anyone...

I honestly feel bad for YG trainees and even the members that already debuted. They come into the company hoping to debut. They’re people with hopes and dreams. I wonder how people in these groups really feel. Are they feeling bored? Sad? Angry that they’re in this situation? Do they feel like they’ve wasted their time? I mean, I know that all Jennie is doing is binge-watching shows on Netflix and Jisoo gets out like once a week to host Inkigayo. Other than that, who knows?

Honestly, if YG debuts two new groups next year what will become of iKON? Will we have to wait another two years for a comeback? Will Blackpink ever get at least a mini-album? Will Winner ever get an actual album with Taehyun gone?

Side-note: I honestly think YG could be replaced as top 3. There are plenty of other groups and companies that are doing pretty well right now. Honestly I could see CJ, Pledis, Cube, or even Starship taking the title soon. Monsta X, Seventeen and Pentagon have done REALLY well this year and I’m not saying that just because I stan them. Anyway, YG is working hard but he’s not working smart. Serial debuting is not the way to go...

Update [12:59pm] I spoke to my other friend who brought up a good point about YG doing what he does in order to make money. I can’t help but agree with this. But at the same time, is making money as important as giving groups attention and staying relevant? Because he can easily make money by having groups come back more often or giving them some sort of reality show, etc.

“House on a Rock”:  Reflecting on how our personal philosophies are rooted in basic ideas, and how it is possible to change that foundation for God

“How does your positionality bias your epistemology?”

That was the title of the first essay I had to read for class, which I would need to write a response paper to. I probably read this title four times over before thinking “ok. I’m not ready for grad school. Fuck me.”

Thankfully the author of the essay explained what that question meant in English: how does “who you are”, your background and experiences, affect how you view the world?

Basically it was a call for the reader to examine their own biases, and why they hold the assumptions that they do. Ended up making for an easier response essay.

Around this time I was being more active on the sub again and had run into a homophobe. By that I mean someone who thinks “homophobia” isn’t real, and who spends most of his time on Reddit throwing slurs around on the_Donald. Whose entire account seemed to be based around how much he hated queer people.

Scrolling through his account on my phone I felt my entire being tense up. This wasn’t anything new, these people exist all over online and I’d run into a lot of them growing up. Thankfully I’m older now and at a point where these things don’t affect me like they used to.

Even so, he was just another bigot. Another dick online. I hate people like him, I thought, god I fucking hate people like you.

In our back and fourth of him showing off the levels of horrible opinions he held, and me trying to come off as condescending and dismissive, he started opening up about another issue and for some reason I invited him to PM me about it.

In private messages, he was a completely different person. He told me about how his parents hadn’t raised him well, how he’s always angry, how he hates himself for looking at porn, how he’s stressed about college, isn’t sure if he likes his classes, and hasn’t made friends because the environment isn’t very social. He feels that there’s nothing that gives him joy except porn and he hated that his life has become so empty.

And I was scared because this person sounds a lot like myself.

When I was in high school I wasn’t really...popular. I guess. I wasn’t attractive, I wasn’t in shape, and I was gay but kept that hidden (some people could tell it in my voice and all kinds of rumors spread about me). I’d heard people behind my back saying I was annoying, and gay, and that they wanted me to shut up. I tried being funny to get people to like me. If I made them laugh they’d like me. Sometimes I’d joke about other people’s looks and mannerisms.

On the I side I was filled with a lot of hate. I hated the “popular” people and how they were always going on about drinking and drugs and sex. Part of me was jealous that I was “missing out” on all three. But it felt better to judge them for it. I hated girls. I’d never say that outright but I grabbed onto sexist ideas of women from seeing other guys online say horrible things. I kind of resented them because they were a reminder that I’d never live a “normal” life. I thought a lot of people at my school were vapid and that I was smarter than most. I felt like I didn’t have any friends so I thought that most people had “fake” friends.

I was filled with so much hate for myself, the only way I could cope with it was to throw it into others and assume the worst in everyone I knew. Because I was always talking bad about people behind their back, I assumed they were doing the same for me.

One time I was walking in the cafeteria and my eyes met a guy who was laughing devilishly with his friend. They both looked at me and went back to laughing. There was nothing to suggest they were laughing at me. They were most likely not aware of me at all. But my first thought was that they had heard something about me and were laughing at me. I went to the bathroom and cried.

I didn’t realize it until college, but one major factor to my constant depression was the assumption no one liked me, and that everyone was horrible. This foundational idea was the source of a lot of other ideas and assumptions about the world that would eventually trickle down into maintaining a negative outlook and personality.

And I could see something similar going on in this online “bully”. I noticed that whenever he talked about any individual or group of people, he would always pair them with a negative adjective. He couldn’t even say anything positive about our President...he supported the President but he would show his support by degrading others around him in news stories. He could only describe people in negative terms.

Of course he wasn’t doing that on purpose or with intention, instead I think this is revealing something deeper. In talking about him and his life he’d pointed out that he is Reformed Christian, and I can’t help think that combining “Total Depravity” with the cruel ways his parents raised him [he didn’t share any details of course] could have lead him to create “everyone is evi no matter what” as the foundation of his outlook. And it would explain why he has so much self hatred for looking at porn, and why he describes any sinner as “degenerate” or “barbaric” or “depraved”. I think that he is so caught up in hate that he hasn’t internalized the loving forgiveness of God.

How can I pretend to be better? Sure I don’t throw around slurs, but my first reaction to him was “I hate you, I hate people like you”. How am I better if I reflect hate? Had I not invited him to reach out to me [on a whim], I wouldn’t be thinking about this stuff now. I’d go on praying and chatting with Christian friends and stuff and wouldn’t have thought I needed to change. How can I pretend to be better when I felt the same way about the world, and I had thrown out hate at others as well?

In thinking about where our biases come from, how we grow up to view the world, I think about how easy it is to use experiences as the bases for our assumptions, and how we keep building assumptions based off of them.

Months ago I tried out a meditation place, and there the woman explained the process to me and the idea behind it. That there is one reality, objective reality, and then there are people, and because of our limited experiences we can’t observe objective reality without the filter of subjectivity, and our reaction to the world is rooted in our experiences. We look back at our memories of events and it’s normal for our memories to be distortions of what actually happened. So when thinking about ourselves, it is easy to make the mistake of thinking of our memories through a lens of negativity. If I assume “no one loves me”, and I look back at my memories through that lens, I’m going to “create” new impressions of memories and assume they all point to the “fact” that “no one loves me”.

And I think that’s why low self esteem makes it harder to break out of addiction. Any addiction you want; drinking, drugs, food, porn, internet...if you have the presupposition of “I’m a piece of shit who’s going to fail at life anyway”, then well you may as well reach for the bottle.

I came back to Christianity from a negative outlook on life, and realized that if I am going to serve God in a meaningful way then I would need to change the foundation of my personal philosophy to one that was more positive in ways that Jesus was “positive”. What I mean is, we are all sinners, so it is pointless for me look at others with cynical eyes as if I were any better than them. Instead, I need to look at others with forgiveness and compassion. I needed to love others as God loves me.

“Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.” - Matthew 18:21-22

A favorite idea that I learned from Orthodox theology is that everything Jesus did was an act of sanctification. For example, Jesus got Baptized, not because He had sins that needed washing away or anything, but because He is setting an example for us to live, and He is sanctifying the act of Baptism so it becomes a Sacrament.

Like how He sanctifies water, God sanctifies being human. Humans aren’t just humans. Because of Christ, we are now reflections of God, windows to the Divine.

We are Ikons of the Living Christ.

And so, for the purpose of having something direct, brief, but also concrete, the foundation of my philosophic outlook as a Christian is,

“I am an ikon of the living Christ”.

That has so many implications. That means I must work to reflect Christ in everything I say and do. That means that I must treat others with love as God loves us, and that means that everyone is sacred at their foundations, in spite of their flaws. That means limitless forgiveness. And more.

Not going to pretend like any of this is easy. It’s super easy to type and say. But it’s hard to internalize. It’s hard to actually forgive others, to look at someone who has wronged you or insulted you or has thrown so much hate at you and to reply “I forgive you”. Being loving to everyone is so difficult. But in making this the new foundation of my outlook, it has made it easier to deal with problems.

Of course when talking about stress and depression, changing your outlook isn’t going to solve all of your problems. It would be silly to say that all you need is an outlook change in order to overcome a mental disorder. But it does make it easier to cope. If I fall into a depressive state, I’m less inclined to think the worst about myself. I don’t even believe the thoughts I have in my head. “Nobody loves you”, I don’t even take that seriously anymore. My family loves me. My friends love me. God loves me. And I have to love them back.

This ended up much longer than I hoped, but this has been bugging me for a couple days. If you have been going through a rough time, or if you’ve “always” been in a rough time, then maybe self reflection is something you can do to work on coping with negative assumptions. Maybe you will realize that you’ve taken these assumptions for granted for so long that you have ignored other options. Maybe it will help you find more comfort and trust in Jesus.

No matter what, I hope this encourages more people to plant a new seed and let something beautiful grow.

IKON - LOVE SCENARIO

Saying goodbye: the ultimate love scenario?

Anjy Ou: Well, that was unexpected. The song starts out with this ragtime piano, then throws in a metronome and some coconuts to give you this "smiley face" atmosphere. But then the drums kick in, and the first thing Bobby says is "actually I'm not okay." This bitter and sweet contrast continues as the pre-chorus gets emotional, and the chorus is delivered in a matter-of-fact sort of way, but then midway there's a drop into a solid trap beat that feels kind of dramatic? This song is the forced smile you give while you say "it's okay, no hard feelings" after a break-up. If it feels a little on the nose, I bet it's intentional. At the time B.I. would have been writing this song, iKON was going through it. They'd finally returned to Korea after a 2-year sojourn in Japan, only for their comeback single to flop due to a dwindling fanbase. Considering how easy it is for idol groups to implode, he probably thought this would be his last release as a member of iKON. So he pens a happy goodbye - to the fans that loved him as well as the fans that left him. Aside from the impossible catchiness of the song and the [ugly crying] factor, I also love that this song feels contemporary and nostalgic at the same time. The piano reminds me of early Bruno Mars, while the trap beat roots it in 2017/18. It feels very "of the moment" and yet nothing sounds like it. It's the kind of song I imagine people hearing years down the line and going, "oh yeah, I remember that group!" with a smile. The skill that it takes to achieve that balance shows that iKON are underrated as songwriters, and they deserve more attention than they've gotten. (Bobby's 2017 album is a lovestruck millennial pop-hip-hop-R&B dream and absolutely worth a listen.) Any comparisons to Big Bang only highlight this fact, as Big Bang themselves are at their best when showing off their pop prowess. All this to say, it's the sweetest kind of irony that a song meant as a farewell is what's bringing iKON a new round of fame. They absolutely deserve it, and I'm excited to see what they do next. I just hope YG doesn't keep fucking them over. [8]

Ryo Miyauchi: That piano riff says it all: "Hey, we fucked up, but we had quite a ride, didn't we?" Though I'm happy for the peace iKON find, I also wish for some tension to disrupt this sound of mutual agreement. Or at least some flashbacks to the supposedly frustrating melodrama would've done fine. [5]

Will Rivitz: The happy-go-lucky Aminé vibes here are pleasant, but the Portland rapper is as alluring as he is because of his nearly unparalleled charisma, turning songs with about as much harmonic complexity as "Love Scenario" into living and breathing creations, the rapper as the electricity invigorating Frankenstein's monster's cadaver. iKON, unable to capture the same spirit, sounds flat and lifeless. Katherine St Asaph: "Lush Life" plus "Same Old Love," plus synth claps and cowbell for some reason. You'd think that combination would be good, or at least dynamic; instead it's pleasant and static like hold music. [3]

Alfred Soto: Have these kids been listening to Fountains of Wayne or something? That piano melody and the lilt of their voices suggest a nugget buried on the back half of Welcome Interstate Managers. But FOW wouldn't have attempted the alternation of programmed cowbell and keyboard lick. [7]

Maxwell Cavaseno: It's hard to say exactly when the thread began (in some respects you can go to the under-regarded cornmeal of "Yesterday" by Block B, or even as far back to the supreme 1D derivative cheese of "We Like 2 Party" by BIGBANG), but a strangely inviting group of K-Pop boy band material is not looking to the cool nostalgia of definitive pop styles such as New Jack Swing or even current day rap tropes, but instead end up somewhere closer to Plain White T's or All-American Rejects "the big hit was over a year ago and we're so fucked on our debts we need another one NOW" pop rock. "Love Scenario" with its absurdly trite piano melody has one foot in that camp and another in the sadsack pop raps of Beenzino, but thankfully avoids being too wistful for a strange mix of stoic glumness and acceptance. iKON's failed romance isn't so much full of regret or disdain, but a reluctant desire to treat the past with a scrutiny not to find out what went wrong but instead to try and preserve its integrity. Maybe a bit chauvinistically noble in some regards, but in others a bit more mature than it should manage to achieve. [7]
