The Common Misperceptions of the Travelling Musician

Hey everybody, played my first couple shows of 2018 at Terra Firma in Brooklyn, NY and The Monkey Palace in Boston, MA this past weekend.  Here is a list of some upcoming shows for the next couple months.

Everybody has their own perception of what a travelling musician is.  Obviously that perception varies from person to person but there are common traits that are perceived when people paint the picture of a musicians life and personality.  Being that I am a travelling musician I have become very accustom to the different perceptions that people have, and most of the time when they apply those perceptions to me they are pretty far off.  

I notice that people who talk to me at shows are frequently taken aback when I mention that I own my own business. That’s not something that people typically coincide with being a travelling musician, and I guess many musicians don’t think about it too much as an option, but to me it makes sense.  In theory I can take time off whenever I want, although it’s much more complicated than that, but very true that I don’t have any immediate authority to answer to. I just have to maintain a certain amount of responsibility to keep things afloat.  Other musicians that tour tend to have jobs like bar tender, server or barista, where they can have co-workers cover shifts for the duration of time that they are away.  I think it’s fair to say that many musicians that are touring on their own budgets live in group houses, or cheap apartments where they have several roommates, making rent cheap, and they tend to be living in less desirable parts of town.  Although I had done this at one point in my life, I currently live in an apartment with my wife and our dog.  That’s another group of shockers, that I’m married, that I’m a man deep into his thirties and also I own a dog.  Not the typical profile of the rough and ragged touring guy, young and void of responsibilities.  Truth be told any musician that is touring in any capacity is working hard, spending hours of their day booking tours and organizing information, on top of writing songs and recording albums.  This work actually takes a great deal of responsibility and commitment.

I’ve had people come to me and claim that they too are gypsies, love to travel and have made solemn pledges to the road, living day to day, the romantic life of a vagabond.  I have this person inside of me, I get itchy feet, and become restless when I have laid dormant for too long.  But I also have other desires and personalities puling at me, and in the end I compromise.  It’s hard for me to react to some of these folks, other than just to tell them that I am not the person that they perceive.  

I love the fact that there is a huge culture of touring folks, and the ones who grind it out on the road are inspirational.  They’ve chosen a different way to interact with the world, not bound to the step by step cycle that many of us are locked into, but have gave way to their inner desires and figured out that there are different ways to live and be happy.  I have a lot of touring friends, some more dedicated than others, but all are different in the way they live their lives and accomplish what they do.  Even if being a travelling musician isn’t what you want to do I think you can take notes from them, learning to challenge  perceptions of life.   You don’t have to change who you are, but you can change how you live and interact with the world.  Why should you deny yourself opportunities just because what you want to do doesn’t mesh with the view of popular opinion?
