Super volunteer @cnnewton21 wanted to make sure we didn’t forget that of course this weekend is Percival’s rescueversary too! Percival Pigglebottom or “Uncle Percy” as he’s affectionately known by his pig pals, arrived in April of 2016 with Po and two female pigs, Angie and Rebecca, who found permanent sanctuary @_animalplace in Grass Valley. They came to us after a long road trip with Auntie Jan from Washington state after being confiscated from terribly abusive humans by Animal Control and sheltered by Whatcom Humane Society. Percival’s life was unimaginable hell as he was used for breeding and forced to watch his children and friends be slaughtered in front of him on a “backyard farm.” He was malnourished, physically abused and locked in a windowless barn with so much mud and manure on the floor that piglets continually downed in it. Percy is also permanently deaf, though we do not know if he was born deaf or lost his hearing. We are so grateful for our donors and volunteers who make it possible for us to give pigs like Percival the life they deserve. Percival has been under the weather for the last week or so. A visit from Dr. Natalie confirmed he is lame in one of his back feet. No infection, likely just a strain. For a gentleman who she estimates at over 800lbs a foot/ankle/leg issue is no joke, and for these human-engineered breeds, their unnatural weight and size typically lead to their demise. He has been on stall rest all week, taking copious amounts of meds to both keep him comfy and take down the inflammation, and getting lots of love and treats. Ah yes, the elusive pigodile, peering at us from behind a log where he camouflages himself to prepare a sneak attack from the water on the defenseless watermelon.
