I have always been fascinated by outsider artists and had a friend in school who made some incredible music that was very bedroomy and DIY. They started dating someone who seemed cool at first but clearly had some deep insecurities that they projected on this guy. Slowly they together alienated everyone in their circle, coming up with flimsy excuses to call out and put others on blast.

We had a falling out that was quite bitter and since then it seems like this person fell off the face of the earth. Their last release is now 9 years old.

The song is about that experience, and missing both the person and their music and resenting that they abandoned such a promising career.

Musically, this track has a more progressive rock influenced structure, as well as being influenced by Klo Pelgag and her more proggy tunes. The guitar solo is influenced by Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew in particular Fripp's solos on Brian Eno's St. Elmos Fire.

It's one of my favourite solos I have recorded even though I have a bit of a complicated relationship with guitar and am not nearly on the level of those kings (Fripp and Belew).

Iajhi Hampden provided drums and did an outstanding job, not only perfectly matching the intensity but also playing in such a way that the rhythmic imperfections in my guitar playing become part of the push and pull of the groove. It's really amazing to hear one's music come to life with a killer drummer and Iajhi is really one of the greats.

I'd like to share something with you, Tumblr.

When I first played D&D 3.5, many years ago now, I played a bard named Wren, using a homebrew race that you could find on the official Wizards forums around that time called the Kassuri. He was a goofy little manlet with the ears and tail of a fox who knew no fear. He got to ride on the back of a luck dragon.

He tamed a shocker lizard and named it Tazer. He once drank a whole bucket of dwarven ale without getting drunk, and then shouted, "I said a large glass!" and another time bluffed a group of elven soldiers that the Half-orc paladin was his pet. When a demon killed his mentor, he avenged them and made a coat out of the demon's wings.

He fought his former friend turned enemy, almost died, and won. He got knighted by his king after starting the campaign exiled from his homeland, and then prayed so hard to be a better person that his alignment shifted right before going to face the final boss. When he realized the BBEG was sensitive to sounds and played a heavy metal lute solo so sick that it literally caused their Fortress of Evil to collapse.

It was a silly game, played fast and loose by a group that only half understood the rules, but it was a blast to play. After having some not-so-good experiences with AD&D (may I never forget The Exploding Cleric), it was the first game I ever played to the end of a campaign. I loved the game, and I love my group from back then...Hothgoth, Lios, Pixie, Elena, Leif, and even the others who came in later and didn't stick around as long. I've held onto those memories, and my beloved "first successful character", ever since.

Until the tail end of last year, I never had any decent art of him.

This is Wren, almost perfectly as I envisioned him all those years ago.

The sad truth is, unless you're an artist yourself, it can be hard to get character art for TTRPGs. Most people I know in the hobby don't have a lot of money, and even if they do you never know how long a character may last before getting killed by bad rolls. Back in the day, for the game Wren is from, we just used a text description and imagined the character. These days, most people I know use a virtual table top. Characters need tokens (and usually profile pictures for when other players check the sheet), and for hardcore players like me that are in several games a week, that's a lot of art that could need swapped out on a moment's notice.

The sad truth is, people just steal it. Even the people I know who are artists steal art, only really drawing characters they get attached to. We discuss what images would be good for characters, show one-another what we've found, and it's not uncommon to decide details about a character based on what kind of a picture you can find for them. So...when AI art started becoming a thing, I got excited.

Artist Tumblr probably noticed right away that the picture up there is AI generated. It's a pretty good output, but there's still telltale signs. Yes I notice them, and no they don't bother me. It's better than any of the attempts I ever made at doing a picture myself, and even if I could afford a picture of that level of quality, who knows if the artist I found would be able to fully understand my description the way I see it in my head, or if they would be willing to put in the time and effort to revise it to my satisfaction. It was going to be imperfect either way, but I was able to take time (a frankly ridiculous amount) to tweak things and start over and try different approaches until it was to my satisfaction.

...and like I said, I make a lot of characters. Now, instead of just finding some picture I like and stealing it wholesale, I end up generating a lot of character art. It's just for my personal use either way, and thanks to AI, I get to express my own ideas.

I know some people out there are abusing the technology to make a quick buck, but please remember that's a fault of those people. There are people abusing just about every technology out there. For other people, who are only trying to use it to express themselves or to do things without needing an additional skillset they don't have, AI art is a godsend.

I don't usually include massive spoilers in my reviews so while this one doesn't contain spoilers for the climactic twists of the book, there is a spoiler to a significant plot point that happens halfway through the book. Please continue with care.

There is a lot I liked about this book that I didn't expect to.

1. James is an actual villain that lives with real consequences of his actions. Specifically that he can't treat people like shit and still get complete loyalty out of them. He thinks he can, but that's part of his downfall and I seriously enjoyed that. Absolutely, completely, so happy that it happened in that way because it made it so real. I'm very aware of how real-world mafia bosses keep their safety by taking care of their people and the civilians around them and this book is an excellent view of what happens when that person doesn't.

2. Peter is imperfect. I adored the nuance between the two, that Wendy wasn't choosing between an evil man she loves and a perfect father that wants the best. It made total sense. Every one of Wendy's motivations fit her based on her life and I could understand why she defended James, even when he absolutely didn't deserve it. It was fascinating to read.

3. In terms of modernizing old stories, this is by far one of my favorites. I adore the solid reality take, that there's no fantasy element at all and everything is real life. The little quirks here and there of how the author manipulated and remained true to the story without including the fantasy, it was absolutely perfect. I loved every single instance of figuring out how it all connected. The crocodile, the clock ticking, pixie dust, the hook, all of it. Absolutely wonderful. It all fit in so perfectly, nothing felt out of place or forced.

4. I love that when James put on his Hook mask for Wendy, he hated that she treated him like Hook. And then her standing her ground, keeping the distance, for as long as she did? It made this the kind of dark romance I enjoy -- that the FMC isn't unaware of who the MMC is. It was very well done and just. I loved watching that with her.

So all those things I love, why is it only four stars? There was no grovel. James never explains on screen why he did what he did to Wendy. He never apologizes for the days she spent locked in the basement. Yes, there's a sentence where he voices his regret to her, but there isn't a grovel. I don't expect a villain to get on his knees and wax poetically about how he wronged her, but I do expect him to tell her why he kidnapped her, chained her to the wall in the basement, and left her in the dark for days.

Obviously, this wasn't enough to have me hating the book. I still loved it. How I hated James in the beginning and how I loved watching him fall. The ending was perfect, the twists were amazing and one of them, I didn't see coming, and I so much appreciate how both Wendy' and James's story with Peter comes to a close. This will definitely be a reread, but only during times I can stomach the violence again. I can only handle a detailed depiction of cutting/ripping someone's tongue out on certain days.

The Train Rockers's “Munich” Captures the magic of Human Moments

Munich (long pitch) tells the story of the “birth” of our band. It was kind of unintended and “happened” in the ugly part of town. One Friday night in 2015 my friends and I took heart, grabbed our acoustic instruments, and started to play some songs we knew at the “Munich Liberty”, a famous bar district.

There are a lot of hip places for musicians in Munich, but somehow, we were more attracted by those dirty streets and its people, we all knew too well. It’s a crazy part of town: even rivalling football supporters are having a good time here together, at least on Friday nights. So, this was the perfect place for one Turk, one Englishman and three Bavarians playing music together.

Although the start was not perfectly smooth, we soon tasted the magic of the “Liberty”. People began to enjoy our music, sometimes even football hooligans and rappers joined us. But what touched us the most were encounters with burdened souls.

One evening a tall man just stood there, listening for a long time. Weeks later he told us, that he had been on his way to take his life by jumping in front of a train. Somehow the music had stopped him.

Another Friday night we realized two homeless people standing on “our” spot. First, we were not amused – (I know that’s cold, and we know, we are no heroes), but then we listened to their stories and were moved to tears. We started playing for them, to whom life hadn’t been good. It was a beautiful, joyful night.

Our song “Munich” tries to capture the magic of this place, ugly at first glance but beautiful in its imperfection. And the rare moments of love between “fellow humans” who come here to forget their hatred, their loss, and to numb their pain.

These encounters inspired us to write our own songs. And right there in the streets of Munich, our musical and cultural differences were melting together, trying to bring a little tune, a little light, a little love, maybe a little faith to the ugly part of our town. Later we played in subway wagons, (that’s how we got our name) pubs and even in jails, but that is another story.
