James Allan Mollison was born on April 19th 1905 in Glasgow.
Graeme Obree, Chris Hoy and a certain steam train have all bee called The Flying Scotsman in their time, but the original title goes to a man who actually did fly, Jim Mollison.
Jim would go on to become a pioneering aviator, breaking records for long distance flights. His marriage to fellow aviator Amy Johnson also saw them lauded as the golden couple during their time together.
Born the only child of Hector Alexander Mollison, a consultant engineer, and Thomasina Macnee Addie. He was educated at The Glasgow Academy and Edinburgh Academy and took an early interest in flying and obtaining his Royal Air Force (RAF) Short Service Commission at 18, he was the youngest officer in the service, and upon completion of training was posted to India, flying on active service in Waziristan.
At the age of 22, Mollison became a flying instructor at Central Flying School (CFS), again setting the record for being the youngest in this role. Shortly after, he transferred to the RAF Reserve and devoted his time to civil aviation. In 1928-29, he served as an instructor with the South Australian Aero Club in Adelaide, leaving that position to become a pilot with Eyre Peninsular Airways and Australian National Airways.
In July-August 1931, Mollison set a record time of eight days, 19 hours for a flight from Australia to England, and in March 1932, a record for flying from England to South Africa in 4 days, 17 hours flying a de Havilland Puss Moth.
Mollison eventually served in the ATA Air Transport Auxiliary in the Second World War. In June 1941 Mollison and an ATA crew delivered Cunliffe-Owen OA-1 G-AFMB to Fort Lamy, Chad. The aircraft was fitted out as a personal transport for General De Gaulle.
Mollison was feted in London and New York, and could lead the life he had always wanted. “I am a night bird,” he once said. “Life and enjoyment begin when daylight fades. Cocktail bars and clubs, music, beautiful women— that’s living. Daylight comes to me as an interval for sleeping until an afternoon drink helps to bring on another evening.” His autobiography was called “Playboy of the Air”.
When Mollison and Amy Jonson married in 1932 the press were delighted, they were dubbed The Flying Sweethearts by the press and public. . The match was was perfect for the publicity machine, and the two of them set about devising new aviation records: in 1933 they flew together from Wales to New York and had a ticker-tape reception in Wall Street. But marriage did not last long or end well. It has sometimes been assumed that the match was a simple career move on Mollison's part: certainly he did not halt his relationships with other women. Nor did it limit his drinking. As I said earlier, he got the tag “ the Flying Scotsman” but those close to him called him “Brandy Jim”.
As well as his Playboy lifestyle and heavy drinking Jim Mollison was also quick with his fists, and a manager from the Grosvenor House Hotel was reported as saying ” We've had the most awful night here. Jim Mollison and Amy Johnson had a fearful row and he's beaten her up. The bathroom looks like a slaughterhouse.” The marriage officially ended in 1938.
Mollison kept flying, and – like Johnson – flew in a non-combat role in WWII. Both of them flew in the Air Transport Auxiliary. Johnson died in 1941 after baling out of aircraft. Mollison had at least one close escape, when his plane was shot up, but survived the war.
Mollison later settled in London and ran a public house. He married Maria Clasina E. Kamphuis in 1949 at the Maidenhead Register Office. Mollison continued to abused alcohol and in 1953, the Civil Aviation Authority Medical Board revoked his pilot's licence. The couple separated but Maria bought the Carisbrooke Hotel in Surbiton for him – a temperance hotel.
Suffering from acute alcoholism, he was admitted to The Priory, Roehampton, southwest London, where he died on 30 October 1959, the official cause of death was pneumonia, but unofficially it was thought to be alcoholic epilepsy.

Foxtrot Alpha Alpha - Chapter 16
Tumblr media
Pairing: Hangman x Female OC
Word Count: 1682
Warnings: None
Summary: Hangman learned his lesson a long time ago to never show his true feelings when someone's words or actions hurt him. To do so showed weakness that could be exploited, and Seresin men couldn't show weakness. Of course, there was an exception to every rule, and Jake's always came in the form of women, three in particular: his mom, Juliette Kazansky, and the girl whose name he could no longer bring himself to speak. She was the girl that got away; she was his biggest 'what if' and his biggest regret; she would forever be the ghost that haunted his dreams. Jake believed that's where she'd stay, for he would surely never see her again after what he did.
Or so he thought.
Notes: This is the sequel to India Lima Yankee; I'm using the same callsign for the Female OC as in Ghost Story because I just really like it, but they are different characters; chapters in italics are flashbacks.
Chapter Songs: Friday Night No Place Like You
****
Ghost
A drunken patron sang along to karaoke with his comrades egging him on. Annalise watched in amusement from the bar while she waited for her drink. Her eyes drifted to Jake, who stood across the room chatting with a striking brunette. The girl appeared to be devouring every flattering and flirty comment he whispered in her ear. How could she not when the words came from an emerald-eyed God showering all his affection and attention on her?
Not for the first time in her life, Annalise wished she could be the girl in front of Jake, to know what it felt like to have his focus on her be something other than platonic. When the romantic feelings for him arose, Annalise could never place. It'd happened without her even noticing, but they never went away once she recognized them.
Still, Jake would never be interested in her as anything but a friend. Annalise may have been relatively fit, a requirement for any aviator, but she still had some stubborn flab on her stomach, thighs, and arms that refused to disappear no matter how hard she trained or how little she ate. Her body remained a far cry from the models Jake always sought.
Forcing herself to look away, she scanned the club for her other friends: Lydia and Javy. She discovered them in a dark corner making out. It'd taken almost their entirety at the Academy for Javy to finally admit his feelings for Lydia, albeit only because of the liquid courage given to him by the ever-reliable tequila. Now, the couple stayed practically inseparable.
Tumblr media
"I hope you're not looking for someone," a guy said, sliding next to Annalise at the bar.
"Oh? And if I am?" she countered, eyeing him up and down to get a feel of the type of person he was. With his slicked-back hair, ice-blue eyes, and too-low V-neck, something about him set her on edge.
"Then consider me heartbroken because you are the most beautiful girl I have ever seen."
Annalise chuckled wryly. "And how many girls have you used that line on before?"
"You don't beat around the bush, do you?" The man stuck out his hand. "I'm Harry."
"Pleasure," she replied, shaking his hand and purposefully failing to give him her name. "You from around here?"
"Yeah, I live just down the road. Have a beautiful view of the harbor. You can see all the ships coming and going. It's a great place to hang out, chat-" the man stepped closer- too close- to Annalise- "and to get to know someone privately. What do you say we leave the noise and head to my place? Get to know one another?"
Annalise jerked away when his hand trailed up her arm. Her eyes frantically flitted over to Jake, praying he'd take his attention off the leggy brunette for a second so she could send him a silent 'SOS.' Whether God or some other higher being was listening to her prayers, Annalise locked eyes with Jake. It only lasted a second, but she got the message across: Help me!
Tumblr media
His gaze shifted back to the girl in front of him, and all Ghost could think was a string of impressive swear words in multiple languages. Returning her attention to the creep in front of her, who again tried to touch her, Annalise said, "Thanks, but I'm going to pass. I need to get back to my-"
"If you say boyfriend-" Harry interrupted, holding up his hand- "then you should look for a new one. No guy should leave a girl as pretty as you alone."
"I can handle myself just fine."
"Yeah, but then-"
"Hey, Annie," Jake greeted, appearing next to her with the most perfect timing. Bearing his hundred-watt grin, he asked, "Who's your friend?"
"Hey, honey," Annalise responded sweetly, wrapping her arm around his waist, which he returned in kind, pulling her flush against his side. "This is Harry. He was chatting while I waited for my drink."
"You still haven't gotten it? I was wondering what was taking so long."
"Yeah, they're pretty busy, but it looks like my luck is changing with you here." Ghost eagerly reached for her drink, which had finally arrived. Taking a large gulp, she sighed happily. "Did you want to go play a round of darts?"
"Yeah, Javy and Lydia are ready, so we were just looking for you," Hangman said, kissing the top of her head. Annalise involuntarily melted into him at the contact, and she hated herself for having such a reaction. Jake was her friend. That was it! They would never be anything more, so why think anything of it? He had come to her rescue and was playing his part to get the creep away from her. Annalise couldn't read anything else into it.
Tumblr media
"Keep an eye on her, man," Harry warned, sipping his beer. "She shouldn't be left on her own. She was considering going home with me."
Jake chuckled wryly. "I've known Annie for over six years, and it took five of those for her to say yes to a date with me, so I can assure you it's going to take a lot more than a charming smile and smooth-talking to get her to go home with an arrogant prick like yourself."
Clapping Harry violently on the shoulder, Jake escorted Annalise away from the bar, not letting her go even when they stopped near the dart board. He looked her up and down and asked, "You okay? Did he hurt you?"
"No, just gave me the creeps and wouldn't leave me alone. You came in the nick of time, although I'm sorry I tore you away from that girl you were talking with."
"Don't ever apologize for that. You're more important than any girl I'm trying to hook up with. They're a dime a dozen. You-" Jake sat on a stool and pulled Annalise by her hips between his legs. They were at eye-level with each other, their faces a mere couple of inches apart. "You are irreplaceable."
She clasped her hands behind his neck, grinning. "You sure know how to make a girl feel special. The gig is up, though. You don't need to keep pretending you're my boyfriend now that we're not near him."
"On the contrary, he is still watching us, specifically you. If you let me go, there is a very good chance that I'm going to go teach the guy some manners." Jake's gaze drifted briefly over her shoulder, then to her face, lips, and back to her eyes. "Do you trust me?"
"With my life. Why?"
"I don't think Henry-"
"Harry," Annalise corrected.
"I have another name for him, but I'll keep it to myself. Point is, I don't think he's fully bought our story. We need to do a little more convincing."
Tumblr media
"Really? What do you have in mind?"
"This." Jake leaned in and planted his lips on Annalise's, gently but firmly. His hand cupped her cheek before sliding to the back of her head and weaving his fingers through her hair. Annalise stiffened momentarily at the contact, having believed he didn't have the gall to do such a thing, but she swiftly relaxed and melted into the kiss, tightening her arms around his neck.
Annalise swore nothing could top the adrenaline rush of hearing the roar and power of fighter jets caused in her, but in that moment with Jake, she realized there was one thing. She also realized she was monumentally screwed. Annalise had been able to ignore her feelings for Jake for a long time, had even almost convinced herself that they didn't exist at all, but this kiss cemented two things: the romantic feelings she possessed for him were very much indeed real, and they would not disappear any time soon.
"What is going on here?" Lydia's entertained voice queried. Jake and Annalise broke apart sheepishly, staring like deer in headlights at their friend. Javy stood behind her, biting back a smirk.
Annalise gathered her wits about her first. "Some creep was hitting on me, and Jake rescued me by pretending to be my boyfriend."
Lydia wagged a finger at them as she prodded, "And that also required you two to be in a lip-lock?"
"We had to sell it," Jake insisted, standing up and briefly glancing at the other side of the bar. "Especially because he won't take his eyes off of her. He's still watching us."
Lydia frowned in concern. "Should we leave?"
"No, I'm not letting some dick ruin our night. We're here to have fun and celebrate your birthday!" Annalise insisted, grabbing the darts and handing them to Jake. "And if he tries to ruin our fun, then we'll turn him into the dart board."
Jake nodded. "All right, but if you start feeling uncomfortable-"
"I won't. How can I when my boyfriend is here to protect me?" Annalise winked playfully at him, and he cracked a grin. Without another word about Harry the Creep, the friends turned their attention to the game and enjoyed the rest of the night without incident. Still, Annalise couldn't stop thinking about the kiss she and Jake shared. It's not that it meant anything significant to either of them, but God, she understood now why all the girls wanted to sleep with him. Annalise might've thrown her morals out the window to have a one-night stand with him if not for their friendship. She would do nothing to risk it, knowing that Jake felt nothing romantically for her. It hurt, but that was life. After all, not everyone was meant to end up together, no matter how well they got along. Her mom and Maverick were a reminder of that. They pushed each other to be the best they could be and helped each other through difficult times, but they weren't meant to end up together, and now, they didn't even speak.
Annalise couldn't risk that happening with Jake. He was the best thing to ever happen to her, and God forbid if something ever happened to him...

you asked for a shitty poem istg this is the only poem ive ever written HEY COME BACK *grabs you and pulls you back* NOW YOU HAVE TO TELL ME ABOUT ALL YOUR NEW STUFF AND SHARE SOME OF YOURS >:(
Tumblr media
also literally you don't have to feel pressured to answer this take your time like honestly you don't even have to reply I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR NEW WIP SACRIFICE!1?1?11??1
AAAAAAAAAAAAA! HI!
*offers you tea*
I sent you an ask a few days ago but my tumblr is acting funny so I don't think you got it. Anyways.....
The poem omigod. It's wow! Is it the complexities of human emotion that we hide with beauty. Or is it about romanticizing the dangerous and falling in love with it. The juxtaposition. The rhythm. The contrast. Holy fucking wow. ITS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. ITS SO GOOD. *frothing mouth*
Also you new pfp is so cooot. eeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
Okay now to answer your questions. New stuff, nothing much there. I have been writing Rebel and Havenpoint (I should really post the next chapter) really slowly. Writing more chem notes than stories.
Rebel is a part of a series. I still haven't decided if it is going to be a duology or a trilogy. But there will be another book if I have the energy and will to write it.
And I have been concentrating on making two comic strips for my college scholarship. I finished the first one, one more to go.
Long rant below. Like really fucking long. Not joking.
Sacrifice is a placeholder name for my WIP. I haven't decided what its actual name will be. I am really hoping I don't abandon this WIP.
Like I did with Masque, Woven Worlds, Orphic Academy, Timekeepers, Card Thief, Games of the Astute, Mortal Bound, The Playground, After the afterlife (dumb name), Stolen by Silence, etc.
So Sacrifice is an Indian Dark Academia novel.
25 of the best magic users from all over India will be invited to attend a prestigious and mythical academy after they finish 12th grade. So they take this mysterious train ride to another fucking realm where the school is (nobody knows its exact location cause they all faint in the train). Also the academy's architecture will be based off on Indian architecture throughout the ages, so I am currently researching on that when I get time.
The students have a year to conduct a study in the academy. They will have access to all sorts of ancient scriptures and previous alumni's studies. At the end of the year the Dean will see what they worked on. If the dean is impressed by you project they will tell you the secret of life and death magic. The Dean is never impressed. If they fail to impress the Dean they go home with absolutely nothing and they would forget the place.
However, the people who went back home with nothing went mad after a while and killed themselves. Their minds are not able to process the magical place they had just been to. Being at the academy also manages to mess with the minds of a person. It drives them a bit crazy. Some people have suicided there or have killed somebody else. The students don't know this.
Spoilers after this point.
So a group of six students join together and decide to help each other with their projects so they can get the secret. One of the group finds out about the whole madness thing and tells the others about it.
Now each of the six students has a hamartia (tragic flaw). From jealousy to manipulative. This is actually a small experiment from my side because the main characters are not good people, so I am gonna try and make them likable. Its going to be so hard.
Anyways desperate and power hungry the group decides to find the secret themselves and steal the academy's resources and escape before the end of the year.
The others fearful of dying/going mad start to push the limits of their magic. They experiment with things that they are not supposed to experiment with.
With every experiment their hamartia takes over. They start going mad. They become a fucking cult. They start to sacrifice the other students to ancient gods (in true ancient fashion) and become more powerful. Once all the students are gone they start killing each other and the last one left ends up destroying the academy along with themself trying to become the most powerful being.
*sobbing* I talk too much.

Spiritual Progress — part III
“Many persons seem to think that adeptship is not so much the results of radical development as of additional construction; they seem to imagine that an Adept is a man, who, by going through a certain plainly defined course of training, consisting of minute attention to a set of arbitrary rules, acquires first one power and then another; and when he has attained a certain number of these powers is forthwith dubbed an adept. Acting on this mistaken idea they fancy that the first thing to be done towards attaining adeptship is to acquire ‘powers’—clairvoyance and the power of leaving the physical body and travelling to a distance, are among those which fascinate the most.
To those who wish to acquire such powers for their own private advantage, we have nothing to say; they fall under the condemnation of all who act for purely selfish ends. But there are others, who, mistaking effect for cause, honestly think that the acquirement of abnormal powers is the only road to spiritual advancement. These look upon our [Theosophical] Society as merely the readiest means to enable them to gain knowledge in this direction, considering it as a sort of occult academy, an institution established to afford facilities for the instruction of would-be miracle-workers. In spite of repeated protests and warnings, there are some minds in whom this notion seems ineradicably fixed, and they are loud in their expressions of disappointment when they find that what had been previously told them is perfectly true; that the Society was founded to teach no new and easy paths to the acquisition of ‘powers’; and that its only mission is to re-kindle the torch of truth, so long extinguished for all but the very few, and to keep that truth alive by the formation of a fraternal union of mankind, the only soil in which the good seed can grow. The Theosophical Society does indeed desire to promote the spiritual growth of every individual who comes within its influence, but its methods are those of the ancient Rishis, its tenets those of the oldest Esotericism; it is no dispenser of patent nostrums composed of violent remedies which no honest healer would dare to use.
In this connection we would warn all our members, and others who are seeking spiritual knowledge, to beware of persons offering to teach them easy methods of acquiring psychic gifts; such gifts (laukika) are indeed comparatively easy of acquirement by artificial means, but fade out as soon as the nerve-stimulus exhausts itself. The real seership and adeptship which is accompanied by true psychic development (lokothra), once reached, is never lost.
It appears that various societies have sprung into existence since the foundation of the Theosophical Society, profiting by the interest the latter has awakened in matters of psychic research, and endeavouring to gain members by promising them easy acquirement of psychic powers. In India we have long been familiar with the existence of hosts of sham ascetics of all descriptions, and we fear that there is fresh danger in this direction, here [in India], as well as in Europe and America. We only hope that none of our members, dazzled by brilliant promises, will allow themselves to be taken in by self-deluded dreamers, or, it may be, wilful deceivers.”
— H.P. Blavatsky, Collected Writings

March 14th 1900 saw the birth of Scottish lawyer, Dame Margaret Kidd in Bo’ness.
Today, there are around 130 practising female advocates in Scotland. Before 1923 there had been none; then along came Margaret Henderson Kidd.
Margaret was brought up in Carriden, and that over the decade the Kidd family grew.; Margaret lived with her parents and now had five brothers and three sisters.
She educated at Linlithgow Academy, Kidd later studied law at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with an MA and LLB in 1922. Her early training was conducted with Mitchell and Baxter, writers to the signet, in Edinburgh. Although her first choice of career was the Foreign Office, the then Permanent Secretary, Mr Eyre Crowe, ‘was opposed to women’, so instead Kidd decided to follow her father and go into law.
In 1923, Kidd was called to the Faculty of Advocates and became the first female with the right to plead in the Court of Session, the highest civil court in Scotland. The event attracted great interest from members of the faculty and the legal profession, as well as the media. The Scotsman newspaper, as was typical of press coverage of women in the news, took special interest in Margaret’s outfit, reporting that she wore a ‘coat frock of black crepe morocain, a soft white collar with a narrow white bow tie, and a straw hat trimmed with velvet.’ Later in the day she donned the wig and gown as she formally entered her new role.
Between 1923 and 1948 she remained the only lady advocate. Kidd was the first lady advocate to appear before the House of Lords and before a parliamentary select committee. Kidd also had the distinction of becoming the first woman KC in Britain, preceding Helena Normanton and Rose Helibron who were appointed KC in England and Wales in 1949.
While Kidd appears to have downplayed the significance of her role and career in interviews – “I don’t know what they made all the fuss about” - it is clear that others, including her alma mater, were aware of and followed her progress. In the University of Edinburgh’s records of graduations, Kidd’s entry includes several newspaper clippings tracking parts of her career and life.
In 1930 Margaret married Donald Somerled MacDonald in Carriden Parish Church. Donald was a Writer to the Signet and member of the firm Scott and Glover, Hill Street, Edinburgh. . The couple went on to have one daughter, Anne.
During the Second World War, Margaret played a prominent part in organising Christmas treats and functions for the wives and dependants of men serving with the 14th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, and particularly the 39th Battery, of which her brother Col. J. T. Kidd was then in command.
Margaret’s professional life also led her to sit on the committee of Representatives of Poor Persons in Scotland as a referee under the Widows and Orphans and Old Age Contributions Pensions Act, and to undertake the Assistantship in the class of Public Law at Edinburgh University.
Margaret Kidd spent much of her life in India Street, Edinburgh. Donald had died in 1957, leaving Margaret a widow for over 30 years until her death on 22 March 1989 in Cambridge. A funeral service was held at the Canongate Kirk, Edinburgh. A eulogy by Lord Hope of Craighead echoed what had been printed about her 41 years earlier by the Scotsman:
‘Her success was won by strength of character, courage and integrity and is a mark of her true qualities that, despite what might seem to be the revolutionary nature of her achievements, she always held the affection and respect of others.’

Ghost Story - Chapter 1
Tumblr media
Pairing: Rooster x Female OC
Word Count: 2331
Warnings: Mild swearing
Summary: No one will miss a ghost. It'd been a running joke for as long as anyone could remember, something Ghost herself started, and she always said it with a smile on her face or with mirth in her voice. The untouchable stealth pilot in every sense of the word, no one could've predicted the depth of her turmoil over recent events, nor the extremes she would go to in order to protect the man she loved, not even those closest to her. Now, all that was left of the young aviator for Maverick, Hangman, and Rooster were the memories of the past, which would slowly fade with time. She'd come into their lives and made an unforgettable impression, and then, like a ghost, she was gone... Then again, ghosts can't die a second time.
Notes: The chapters/parts in italics are flashbacks. Also, I know I used Melissa Benoist as Juliette in India Lima Yankee but I really love her as an actress okay...
Chapter Songs: Willow Sympathy
***
Rooster
The wind howled outside, bending the black pine trees and blowing the snow sideways with such force and creating such an impressive whiteout that one wouldn't be able to see their hand in front of their face. Branches scratched the side of the Breckenridge mansion, and the home creaked and groaned, creating an eerie atmosphere that could lead someone to believe the place might be haunted. However, the only thing haunting Bradley Bradshaw at two in the morning was the knowledge it was around this time of year that he'd cut off his last remaining family member from his life. It'd sent him into a spiral of quiet annoyance and rage, and the more he thought about Maverick's betrayal, the worse it became.
Bradley thought accepting his friend's invitation to her family's Breckenridge estate for a week during Christmas break and having fun on the slopes would distract him- and maybe even prevent him- from his annual downward spiral. At first, it worked, but then he stayed up past everyone else, and alone with his thoughts, the memories and emotions returned with a vengeance. Maybe it wouldn't have happened if Annalise Winchester hadn't gotten under his skin earlier. It's not like she intended to; she just had this incredible habit of pushing his buttons. Annalise, although in the year below him, had proved herself to be one of the best fighter pilots in the Academy, although she seemingly had no regard for her own personal safety, taking risks to win competitions and training sessions that made even the most seasoned aviators anxious. Annalise was also the only one in the group to have a callsign already: Ghost. He never understood how she received it so early on, but he also didn't prod. It's not like they were close. Far from it, truth be told.
Bradley and Annalise had gotten into a few arguments before, the most recent being their first morning in Breck. Thankfully they'd been alone when it happened to avoid any awkwardness amongst their friends. Bradley had said something snarky- he couldn't even remember what it was- and she snapped at him, finally demanding what his problem with her was. Bradley responded with the fact that, up in the air, she was reckless and dangerous. What he didn't say, although she swiftly pointed it out in her rebuttal, was that her style got results. He snapped back that at least he didn't have to have his dad pull any strings to get him into the Academy. Annalise rolled her eyes but said nothing further, stalking off. She'd ignored him the entire trip, managing to stay as far away from him as possible, which turned out to be easy. Her closest friend- Jake Seresin- commandeered most of her time. It was easy for everyone to see that he was head over heels for her and that Annalise remained utterly oblivious to it.
"What's the long face for, Bradshaw?" Annalise asked quietly from the other side of the room. Bradley whipped his head around. She wore black leggings and a matching oversized hoodie, her hands shoved into its pockets. Annalise's blonde hair tumbled down her shoulders, and her brow furrowed slightly in apparent concern for his wellbeing.
Still, his current fury, along with their existing enmity, caused him to retort, "None of your business."
Annalise held up her hands. "Fine. I came for a snack anyway, not you."
Rolling her eyes, she shuffled off to the kitchen, leaving Bradley alone and with a strange amount of guilt. For once, Annalise had voluntarily been civil to him, and he'd been nothing but rude. As much as he wanted to be left alone, she hadn't deserved that, so when Annalise- ice cream carton in hand- strolled into the living room to head back upstairs, Bradley said, "Hey, Winchester, I'm sorry for snapping at you. That was uncalled for."
Tumblr media
Annalise halted her trip up the steps, raising an eyebrow at him. "You're apologizing to me? Now I know something is really wrong," she said, eliciting a small chuckle from Bradley. The corners of her lips tugged upward, pleased by his reaction. She hesitated, then cautiously approached him. "Seriously, though, everything okay? If looks could kill, that fireplace would be dead a thousand times over."
"It's... it's family issues," Bradley replied, not wanting to go into detail about the turmoil in his mind, fearing voicing it would upset him further. Besides, it's not like anyone would understand what he was going through.
"I know a thing or two about that." Ghost sat on the coffee table across from him, shoveling a spoonful of ice cream into her mouth. The reflection of the flames flickered in her sapphire eyes. "Talk to me, Bradshaw."
Bradley shook his head. "Nah. There's nothing you can do about it."
"Maybe not, but I know venting about it can help. You don't have to give me all the nitty gritty details, but this is obviously eating at you. I know we're one of the farthest things from 'close,' but you're on vacation, and you shouldn't let this drag you down."
Bradley twisted his dad's Academy ring, debating his options. Ghost made good points, but it was also Ghost, the girl he distrusted to his core. Yet, here she was, being kind when he'd never given her reason to be. And something about the gentleness in her tone and the understanding in her eyes made him cave. "It was right around this time, a couple of years before I joined the Academy and back when I was at UVA. I learned my dad had been the one to have my papers pulled from the Academy, setting me back in my career four years. Our relationship crashed and burned after that. I told him never to contact me again, although he has tried."
Ghost tilted her head. "Your dad? But I thought- I thought your dad was-"
"Dead? Yeah, my biological one is. He died when I was five in a freak training accident. I'm talking about my adoptive dad."
"I see. I'm sorry to hear about your dad, both of them. I can't imagine how hard that must be. How does your mom feel about it?"
Bradley shrugged. "Don't know. She's dead too."
The spoonful of ice cream on its way into Annalise's mouth froze in midair. She carefully set it back down in the carton and shifted from the coffee table to a position next to him on the couch. "What about siblings? Do you-"
"Nope. No siblings. Only child."
"So your adoptive dad, he was your last family member?"
"Yep. And now I've lost him too."
"That's... I can't even imagine," Annalise said, shaking her head. "Did he give a reason for it? For pulling your papers, I mean."
"Said I wasn't ready, whatever the hell that means," Bradley responded bitterly, slumping into the couch, his head resting on the back of it. He stared at the white ceiling with the rustic wooden beams and antler chandelier. "You know, I could move past the anger if it wasn't someone I'd been so close to."
"It's the betrayal that hurts the most." Annalise's on-point remark, accompanied by the all-too-understanding tone, made Bradley roll his head to look at her. She must've seen the question in his expression because she added, "Like I said, I understand family troubles. Actually, I understand what you're going through more than you know."
"What do you mean?"
Annalise hesitated, shoveling a spoonful of ice cream into her mouth as she stared at the contents of the carton. "I'm well aware that most of my peers, including you, think my dad helped me get into the Academy. In a way, he did, but only by stopping my mom from having my papers pulled."
"What?!" Bradley exclaimed, lifting his head from surprise.
"I found out and confronted her about it, told my dad, and they got into a nasty fight about it. Similar to you, my mom claimed I wasn't ready, but I think she was just scared because my sister had nearly died in a plane crash during a training exercise at the Academy. But we know the risks when we sign up, and I was and still am ready to take that risk. We're better now, but that betrayal lingered for a good year, and I do find myself still thinking about it on occasion. I find myself hesitating to tell my mom things in case she uses that knowledge against me somehow."
"Why don't you tell people that when they accuse you of having your dad get you in here? Why didn't you tell me that when I accused you of it?"
"Would you have believed me?" Annalise countered. Bradley hesitated, giving them both his answer. "Exactly."
"Is that why you fly the way you do, then? You're trying to prove you belong at the Academy?"
"Yeah. If people are going to accuse me of what they do, then I'm going to show them that I still belong there by kicking their asses at everything, whether that be in the air or academically. There are no points for second place when it comes to this for me."
"That's a lot of pressure to put on yourself."
"Yeah, but if it pays off in the long run, then I'm willing to do what's necessary. This trip is actually the first time I've let myself have a full break from school without any studying. I only came because Jake convinced me. Otherwise, I'd be home in Texas studying for next semester's material."
"I get it. I'm the same way. I'm the odd one out, being older than everyone else in my year because I got held back from joining for four years, and they teased me about it until I started beating them at everything."
"Is that why you're always up at the ass crack of dawn?"
Bradley snorted. "Yeah. I get my workout in and some studying, sometimes both if I'm on the treadmill. I guess it's also to show Mav that I am ready for it."
"Mav?"
Bradley grimaced at his unintentional use of his dad's name. "Short for Maverick."
"Did his mother not like him or something?" Annalise asked jokingly before she swiftly sobered up, an epiphany flashing across her face. "Wait, Maverick... as in Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell?"
Tumblr media
"Yeah, how'd you know?" Bradley responded, curious as to how she recognized him. Most students didn't, considering his dad went on black op missions more than anything. Bradley would never admit it aloud, but he worried when he hadn't heard from or of Maverick in a while. Despite his deep-seated anger, the idea of losing his last family member made his heart ache with grief. It was almost enough for him to pick up his phone and call the man. Almost.
Annalise dropped her gaze from his, swirling the ice cream slowly around. "You probably won't like me saying this, but Maverick is my idol. He's the reason I became an aviator. I was still in the single digits age-wise, but I remember sitting outside my dad's office and listening to his phone conversation about some mission. He was going over Maverick's accomplishments and achievements, and even at my age, I knew he was one hell of an aviator, and I wanted to be just like him."
"I'd maybe be annoyed if I didn't understand where you're coming from, but I do. I wanted to be like him too," Bradley confessed, vaguely wondering why he was baring his soul to this girl he mistrusted and one who could easily divulge all this to her friends. Still, the words kept coming, and Annalise kept him feeling comfortable enough to continue.
"Wanted? Have those feelings changed?"
Bradley mulled over the question. He'd never really thought about it. His mind had switched from wanting to be like Maverick to wanting to prove him wrong. He never thought they could go hand-in-hand, and part of him didn't want them to. Bradley wanted to show Maverick he was ready to be a pilot in his own way. "I don't know. I never thought about it. Come to think of it, you kind of remind me of him with the way you fly."
Annalise chuckled humorlessly. "Is that why you hate me?"
"Just because we fight doesn't mean I hate you," Bradley said sincerely. "I don't trust your flying. It's dangerous. It's-"
"- how Maverick flies."
"Is that really a good thing?"
"Yeah. Mav's come out alive from missions when others didn't, missions he shouldn't have made it out alive of either. It's not that he didn't try and protect his wingmen either. They didn't make it because they didn't fly like him."
"How do you know that?"
"Ghosts hear things they shouldn't," she said with a slight, sly smirk. Annalise stood up, and Bradley followed suit, a twinge of disappointment that the conversation appeared to be coming to an end. "Speaking of which, everything you told me tonight is safe with me. I won't breathe a word about it to anyone."
"I appreciate it. You heading to bed?"
"Yeah. Figured I'd end the conversation while we're getting along rather than pushing my luck and us into an argument."
"I'll walk you back to your room. I should probably go to bed too."
Annalise nodded, tossing the empty ice cream container and the plastic spoon in a nearby trash bin. As they headed up the stairs, he asked, "Hey, how'd you get your callsign so early? I know a handful of people get them during their time at the Academy, but you had yours since your first day."
"Conversation for another time."
Bradley quirked an eyebrow. "You planning for us to talk again?"
Tumblr media
"More like hoping for it. Good night, Bradshaw." With a shy smile, Annalise slipped into her room and shut the door, leaving Bradley standing alone in the dark hallway, thinking: I'm hoping for it too.
